Free league pass preview tonight for comcast michael.

The usual suspects don’t have a link for this game. Apparantly, Detroit vs. Indiana doesn’t rate. There are audio links at NBA.com usually, though I had problems last time.
Good luck. Go Stones!

So I’m still living in DC for the next couple weeks. I call my girlfriend back at home and tell her to order League Pass and then email me the account number so I can activate the complimentary League Pass Broadband that comes with the TV subscription. Turns out you have to wait 5 business days to active the online component. Needless to say I’m now pissed and following the box score with Phoenix-San Antonio on as background noise. ARGH.

If anyone knows a good audio or vid link that would be cool.
On a side note, its weird seeing the Suns not light up the scoreboard.

If you go through NBA.com, you can sign up for the free trial preview of League Pass Broadband. I’m not going to bother because for some reason I NEVER sign up for these free preview things. You stop paying attention and BAM they charge your credit card. Yeah, I’m kinda paranoid.

Things looking smoother than a fresh shave but I mean what else is new. This is the most apathetic Ive been to a start of a season. Maybe’s its the opponent or the fact that concerns for this team dont begin till May or maybe its because I feel the window is shut and Im just watching the young guys develop. Whatever the reason, Im not as pumped for this. Im a terrible fan :(

Liking Herrmann’s scoring and Amir’s one foul.
by Paul M on Oct 29, 2008 10:11 PM EDT reply actions
Ford and Granger are decent, but Indy is definitely not a playoff team. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to be one of those, “hey, they’re playing a weaker team, they should always win by 20” guys. In fact it’s fine to start out the new rotation against some of the less-than-elite teams.
by Toledo Joe on Oct 29, 2008 10:14 PM EDT reply actions
Granger’s very good…and he’s torching us. 26 points on 13 shots is really efficient. I wouldn’t be shocked to see these guys sneak into the eighth seed. Not predicting it, but they’re decent. They were a 44% winning team last year, they don’t completely suck…

The Pistons continue to stink it up.
9th game and they haven’t played good yet even though most of the games including tonight have been at home
The Pacers are are probably in the bottom 10 of all teams in the league.
Bottom 10
Pistons shoot 40%
Until the foul athon in the last minutes the Pacers had over 3X as many free throws.
Simply an awful performance.
The next 4 games there is only one good team and that is Toronto. It is a road game.
Then we play Boston.
We are going to have to play a heck of a lot better than tonight against a terrible team if we are going even be able to stay on the court in Toronto or against Boston.
Simplyh Awful
Giving up 30 points in the 4th quarter at home against a lousy team like Indiana. You have to be kidding.

I will personally apologize to Danny Granger next time I see him.
Good to see lots of contributions. Weird that Chauncey and Rip both shot 5-13, and I don’t love ’Sheed’s 4-11, but it’s amazing how many more shots Detroit had than Indy. And solid game by Hermann. If he is a consistently good backup SF, I will be SO HAPPY. . . !!!
by Toledo Joe on Oct 29, 2008 10:45 PM EDT reply actions
I guess I’ll have a go at it:
1) It’s the first game of the season.
2) The Pacers aren’t very good, and sometimes teams play down to their competition.
3) They have a new coach and are learning a lot of new plays.
4) They are working a few new players into the lineup.
Have patience because this will probably be another fun season!

Mike, you can’t be for Amir and also be a part of the negative pansy crowd. So either you’re with the Amir people or you’re getting lumped in with HB, Brad, P_P, and FRED W CAPEL. Your call. We all got what we wanted, Amir starting, an 11 man rotation, Herrmann at the 3, Afflalo in crunch time. This game literally had something that should please all of us internet lunatics.
by Other Matt on Oct 29, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply actions
Pistons win, Pacers lose. Everyone’s happy except HB.
I wonder if Curry will stick with his minutes distribution with the Amir McMax PF monster (roughly equal time for all three). They collectively got 21 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks. I’m sure that one of them will begin to grab more minutes as the season goes along, but it’ll be interesting to see how that tandem plays out.

@QD:
My main take-away about Curry— he KNOWS how to use this roster. He managed it brilliantly tonight. He showed confidence in the full squad, starting the second quarter with Maxiell, Herrmann, Afflalo, Dyess and Stuckey. That’s a lineup we wouldn’t have seen from Flip unless we were way up or way down in the 4th.
Amir played most of the first, until Indiana brought in Roy Hibbert— how is 7’2 280lbs. After one play, Curry subbed Amir for Brown. Unfortunately, Brown failed offensively and defensively, so he was exchanged for Maxiell in a few minutes of play.
From one game, I am truly pumped to see what Curry does with this team this season. Tonight wasn’t perfect, our players were playing at about 75% of their full speed (save for Amir, who played brilliantly). Once they get in the rhythm of the game, they’re going to be NASTY.
My two biggest take-aways after Curry’s style:
1. Amir has a deadly 20’ jumper. He looked even more automatic than McDyess inside the 3 point line, hitting three of his own shots in a row from around 18-20 feet. It was beautiful.
2. Herrmann. I talked him up a lot last season, he didn’t dissappoint tonight. The best play— he shot a three, realized he was short and beat the crowd of Indiana defenders to his own rebound, then made the layup. It was fabio-tastic.
by Mike Payne on Oct 29, 2008 10:53 PM EDT reply actions
Paul M.: I love “Amir McMax PF monster” too. Technically, though, three people can’t be a “tandem.”
Mike, thanks for being a good example of what I meant in an earlier post by the guy that thinks Detroit should always beat lesser teams by 20. Even in the first game of the season with a new rotation.
by Toledo Joe on Oct 29, 2008 10:56 PM EDT reply actions
Mike is right on with that “Curry KNOWS how to use this roster.”
Did anybody mention Sheed on the post? Because that was nice to see.
by Restructer_It on Oct 29, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions
We didn’t play our best ball, but overall I liked what I saw tonight. We had more rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, and less turnovers. We know teams aren’t going to shoot 50% against us most of the time and our offensive execution should get better as we learn Curry’s system and integrate it with our old stuff.
We have a very deep and versitale team…if everyone is willing to accept their roles we have a very high ceiling this year.
by Jim on Oct 29, 2008 11:05 PM EDT reply actions
Bah, technicalities. Knew I shouldn’t have asked Sheed about that one.
“Amir has a deadly 20′ jumper.”
This just makes me grin.
by Paul M on Oct 29, 2008 11:06 PM EDT reply actions
Don’t get caught up in Amir’s jump shot. He made them today, but it’s still an ugly shot, so don’t expect it every game.
by Restructer_It on Oct 29, 2008 11:08 PM EDT reply actions
To further show Amir’s range:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/shotchart?gameId=281029008
Select Amir from the Pistons pull down bar. The 20’ spot— he made two in a row there, with his other basket at 18’.
Beyond that, I’ve always hated this phrase: “he does stuff that doesn’t show up in the box score”. However, when Amir was on the floor, he was involved in every single play— on both ends of the floor. I’m floored.
by Mike Payne on Oct 29, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

I think “ugly” is a misnomer. There’s more evidence FOR Amir’s outside shot than there is against it, both in the d-league and in the regular season, a la here:

Um…with all the negativity going around, I hate to add to it but I don’t like “Amir McMax”.
I like Amir and all, but it feels like this nickname kind of makes Mcdyess and definately, Maxiell inferior to him.
-Um, I still feel like Maxiell should be starting. But I’m not mad at Amir getting the gig, I just wish Maxiell would of got more of a chance.

MP, that’s the Milwuakee game from his rookie year. The one where he went for like 18-20 points, perfect from the floor, line, and 2-2 from 3 point range? I don’t even need to click the link to know what game it was. I remember watching it at school with my roomates and everybody going, “who the hell is this guy and why hasn’t he been playing?” That was the moment I became an Amir believer.

April 17, 2006? You’ve been holding that one in for a while. I’m not tryin to rip on him. I think he’s great for the starting line up. I actually think he has the possibility to even get a lot better with his intangibles by the end of the season… But… He shoots with his elbow out and he pushes it.

Side note, something all of us DBBers should be pretty damn proud of. The Pistons opened the 2007-08 season with a game against the Miami Heat last November. On that game thread, there were 32 comments.
At time of posting this comment, there were 158 comments. Here’s to a much bigger, stronger and active community this season. Three cheers for Detroit Motherfucking Bad Boys Dot Com.

Yes! I’m one of those 32 comments!
Still waiting on the hazing about the negative Amir comments

Maybe, but so does this guy.

Seriously, the name “Amir McMax” diminishes McDyess and Maxiell? I don’t mean to be inflammatory, but that’s some weak ass bullshit. What freaking city are we from? Detroit is not a soft place, I’m sorry we hurt McDyess and Maxiell’s feelings. Good grief.

Diablo: Me too! Although I’m not proud of my observation:
“Bullet-head looked really good out there. He LOOKS like an athlete, the way he’s all up on people on D, and he has long limbs or something. He looks like he’ll be a dangerous athletic guy once he gets going and the minutes/rotation become consistent.”
Moral of the story: don’t listen to me.
by Garrett on Oct 29, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions
I thought the Amir McMax name actually made sense in a chronological way. Amir starts, Dyess comes off the bench next, and Max is third. Although it could be Max before Dyess, but whatever.

Mike,
Take that noise to BlogABull if you want to be negative after a loss. We’re true blind homers who think that every win means this team played their best!
Weaknesses after 1 game:
- Still kinda soft in the middle, although Amir did his best to try and be Ben for a night.
- Still a jump shooting team although watching Herrmann stroke a few wasn’t too bad.
- The nursery is safe, hopefully on Saturday it will not be.
- Stuckey appeared to force the plays instead of playing with what the defense gave him.
Strengths after 1 game:
- If Prince can fill it up with 18 a night and over 50%? Like I said in an earlier post, he’s an All Star.
- Amir showed what we’ve all been raving about. I joked about him coming into that Boston series last year and giving us 7 points and 7 boards in 15-20 minutes, well he hauled in 6 and 6 in 20 minutes tonight. I think 10 and 8 is easily attainable for this young man. Just think if he had a mean streak in him, jesus…

@Mike Payne
I knew that was gonna be Tay before I clicked on it. He has a little more rotation though… Speaking of Tay. I would rather talk about how Tay is stepping up to Curry’s challenge to become an all-star. They got the ball in his hands a lot more often early in the shot clock and he made good of it. I think 19 points will be routine for him.
Gotta say, I don’t like the Amir McMax either.

Garrett: I also predicted Tayshaun to be an All-star in that post, (and I did it again this year). Shows you what I know. :-P

Wow, wasn’t expecting someone to get that butt-hurt over the comment.

If we use Amir Maxdyess, we get the name all three are referred to as most commonly, so everybody’s happy.

Mm, Prince had a huge game in the opening last year against Miami, and I remember thinking that he was primed for an All-Star season. After that, he had a pretty normal Prince season.
But if Curry is serious about running more plays for Prince (and it seems like he is so far), we could easily see more nights like tonight, where he leads the team in shots and points.

2 things:
1) I was only partially serious.
2) I just saw the highlights of Pop giving Shaq the thumbs up after the intentional foul. Brilliant. Pop for President.

I think Pop is outta control with the intentional fouling. Don’t like it at all.

Feels good to be back guys! Hey, did anyone happen to see at the end of one of the quarters where one of the Pacers threw the ball into the Palace crowd almost up into the upper level way after the horn!? Whats up with that? I thought for sure we’d get a tech free throw for that…

When I read things like “we looked awful, we stink, blow it up” I’m left wondering what the expectations are for a team one supports. I don’t think anyone thinks we’ll win fewer than 50 games…or miss the playoffs…or lose before the second round. That puts us worst case as one of the 8 best teams in the league. We’ve been to six consecutive Eastern Conference Finals. We had the second best record and scoring differential in the league last year. I hardly think that’s awful or worth incessantly complaining about. I wish we’d win the title every year. But it doesn’t mean that when we don’t, or even when I don’t think we’re one of the two or three most likely teams to do so that I act like we’re improperly managed or not worth cheering for. That’s just silly.
The Pistons front office has done a great job. We have a consistently excellent team, and our players are generally good guys. All I ask for is a little perspective – if this team is horrendous and worthy of immediate dissolution, I think there are a few other organizations in need of some serious soul-searching (read: every franchise other than the Spurs in the last 10 years).

Amir can shoot those shots underhanded, if he makes ‘em.
oh, what the hell…
TRADE HIM!!!! TRADE HIM NOW BEFORE HE’S A CANCER!!!!
Nice team effort, and a fun game to watch. This is gonna be a bumpy-ass, fun season to watch.

I’d add that our organization has been so successful that it’s been poached by other teams. We’ve had two assistant coaches recently get promoted to head coach (Woodson and Porter). And our former assistant GM is now running Milwaukee.

Another stellar Clips season getting underway. I got the pleasure of watching that at the bar after the Pistons game.
Be grateful for what we have. VERY grateful.

Amir MaxDyess was awesome tonight. Pistons look good. I’m happy to have games again.

nice thread…
amir looked a little nervous on those first few balls clanking off his hands, but then with the block, steal and a couple o-rebounds, he settled. i’ve been waiting for that jump shot since his d-league days where he aced 3s on a regular basis. he’s taking the next step.
and based on one game, i’d say so is spellcheck and tay. loved arron’s game tonight. and i’m with boney that prince makes the allstar game. i think being on the olympic team was the best thing that could have happened to tay. you have to think the “i belong” switch finally clicked.
i think this pacers team isn’t that bad. granger’s legit. they’ve got good depth. i think o’brien’s a smart coach. they were only a game out of the playoffs last year without jermaine o’neal.
gotta love the minute distribution. it’ll be interesting to see if it remains this consistent.

I am in LA on business so I havent gotten to watch the game yet, but my roommate recorded it for me so I will be watching it on friday for sheezy. Nice to see all the comments and am really looking forward to seeing the game.
Did hermann have any of his signature ballmanship on the way to the lane?
by james b. on Oct 30, 2008 3:23 AM EDT reply actions
james: Indeed he did. He had a slick fast break where he kind of had to twist around at the last second — only someone with his gangly long arms could have made the play. (Sadly, I can’t remember when in the game this was, just sometime in the second half …)
Everyone: um, wow. Nice turn out with the comments, everyone!

Re the number of comments, and this community, I’ll just say I’ve rooting for the Pistons since the Kelly T. era; I just discovered this site in the middle of last season; and it’s great. Thanks to the folks that created and maintain it!
