Pistons still a bargain

Michigan's economy may be going downhill, but fortunately going to a Pistons game is still a (relative) bargain: According to the Team Marketing Report's Fan Cost Index, the average ticket price for a Pistons game is $47.50, almost $2 below the cost of an average NBA ticket, which rose 2.8% from last year to $49.47.

Is this article correct?

Did the Pistons actually jack up ticket prices by 60% since last year?

Doesn’t really seem like a smart move considering the local economy. But I haven’t heard anything about a massive ticket price increase, so this article sort of caught me by surprise.

Matt: the prices mentioned in that CNBC article are “secondary market” prices — in other words, what a scalper would charge you. I’m not sure why it’s so expensive — my best guess is because season ticket holders are only selling the good seats to scalpers right now (because fans who bought the cheap seats are real fans who still want to go all the games). Also, I’d imagine that price fluctuates greatly, especially this early in the season.

But as far as what the Pistons themselves charge, I don’t think the prices went up much, if at all.

All those numbers don’t add up. What’s the methodology? What counts as a “ticket price”? Do the two different averages account for sales and promotions?

Here’s the metric I would like to see. Take the median discretionary income of an area (so like median household income – cost of living). Then take team success and ticket prices. Throw this all in a blender and you would get something that would measure which team charges you the best rate per win.

Taco, are you an economist? I think there’s a need for you in Washington right now!
