Forget what you heard, Maxiell signed his deal
Remember all that "Maxiell will test the waters" bluster? Forget about it. From Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press:
Pistons power forward Jason Maxiell accepted a contract offer today and will not become a restricted free agent following the season. The deal is for $20 million over four years.
The deadline for him to reach an agreement was today.
There's still no word if all four years are guaranteed, but either way it's win-win. There's a decent number of big men hitting the market next summer, and as a restricted free agent Maxiell probably wasn't going to find a much better deal than this. Kudos to DBB reader Mike for the head's up.
Update: McCosky has more details:
The contract extension that Jason Maxiell will sign Friday is a four-year, $20 million deal, like I said before. But the fourth year is Max's option. It is fully guaranteed if he wants it.
I wouldn't be surprised if switching that last year from a team option to a player option was a concession the Pistons made to get the deal done. Either way, it's still a good deal for everyone involved.

If all it took was an extra year and no extra cash, I’m liking it. I’ll be an absolute bargain 3 years from now.

Its great to lock-up an above average player for signifigantly below the MLE. Looks like the baby curfew is going to be in effect until 2012

Good for Maxi and good for the Pistons. I wonder if he finally realized he wouldn’t get the necessary minutes this year to put up the type of stats that would warrant a contract bigger then this?

That’s a bargain for Max now and it will especially be in the future. We’re paying Kwame Brown $4 mil per year. Yeah, I’ll happily pay Max $5 mil.

Nice. That’s below his actual value, and the team has retained his baby-eating abilities for a long time at a real bargain.
In different circumstances, like if he were starting and given around 25-30 minutes of playing time, he could probably bring in much bigger offers. I do think that if he had waited, he could command the MLE or a little more, but I’m very glad he took this offer.

OT: watching the Rockets/Mavs… can anyone tell me why Yao Ming is so highly regarded? He just looks like a plodding oaf. I don’t get it.

From today’s detnews article:
“It will be done (today),” said Richard Katz, Maxiell’s Cincinnati-based agent. “This is good news for Jason. He loves the city and he loves the people. Could he have maybe made more money somewhere else? Yes. But this wasn’t about money for Jason. He wanted to remain a Piston.”
Maxey is great for doing this.

Rob, that’s some tough love for a dude who got 30 and 13 while going 8/8 from the line. He looks like he gets it done. This site would be bananas if any piston put up 30/13, Yao (when healthy) does it on the regular.
