DBB Fantasy League: 2008-09 Opinion Poll

detroit-bad-boys_msp1.jpg

With the 2008-09 NBA season just weeks away, fantasy drafts are in full swing. So what about the DetroitBadBoys Fantasy Basketball League? Its about time we give that some thought here on DBB. Here is the goal: to develop a robust league of active, interested DBB readers who wish to compete in a private league of fantasy NBA basketball. To achieve that goal, DetroitBadBoys needs your thoughts, your opinions and your ideas on where we should take our fantasy NBA league for the 2008-09 season. Continue reading after the break if you're interested in taking part in the forthcoming fantasy basketball league for DBB readers only...

Star-divide

Let me restate the goal: "to develop a robust league of active, interested DBB readers who wish to compete in a private league of fantasy NBA basketball". To do so, we as a group have some big questions to answer. Here is a list of those questions that all of us who are interested should take into account:

  • Am I interested in playing Fantasy Basketball with the DBB community? If so, I should comment.
  • Do I have a preferred fantasy basketball format that I'd enjoy most, roto or head-to-head? If so, I should comment.
  • Do I have a preferred fantasy sports provider that I would like to use, be it nba.com, espn or yahoo? If so, I should comment.
  • I've never played fantasy basketball before, but I love DBB and want to try it out. Can I give it a shot? (short answer: ABSOLUTELY!!)

DBB has a fun season of fantasy basketball ahead of us. After we've worked out the dirty details above, we as a group will democratically determine a path to proceed further. Prior to the start of the season on October 28th, we'll build a fun fantasy basketball group that will bring a new level of fun competition to DetroitBadBoys. This guest writer is pumped -- pumped to get to know the expertise of my fellow DBB readers on a smart, fun, competitive scale. Share your thoughts below, they're the only way we can get this fantasy sports party started right!

I’m interested (and clueless when it comes to fantasy sports), but I am concerned the impact the fantasy angle will have on the blog and the postings that show up on it. If it’s added postings, great. If it’s going to take away from the posts that we’ve all grown to love, then I’m highly tentative.

That said, I’m in.

by Aaron on Oct 8, 2008 2:52 PM CDT reply actions

Since I kept my opinions about how we should do this out of the post above, I thought I’d share ‘em here. As a few others suggested in previous posts, I’d prefer that we do head-to-head play in a Yahoo league…

by Mike Payne on Oct 8, 2008 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

@Aaron:
It’d be totally independent of DBB, managed on a different website (yahoo, nba.com, etc), and from my understanding it wouldn’t effect any of the content on this blog.

by Mike Payne on Oct 8, 2008 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

It’s a great idea. Unfortunately I’m already in a couple leagues and if I want to still have my job by the end of the season I need to avoid joining another one. Next year I’ll be in though.

by Jim on Oct 8, 2008 3:20 PM CDT reply actions

in. head-to-head, don’t care what site.

last year, we had a dbb league and it was not at all commented upon on dbb itself. it will not detract from the “is kwame a bum” or “is amir the second coming of kevin garnett” arguments. guaranteed.

we’re going to do a live draft right?

by JackDutch on Oct 8, 2008 3:24 PM CDT reply actions

@JD: I’d like to try to coordinate a live draft, but it’ll be tough guaranteeing everyone can show up at the same time. We’ll see after we’ve gathered a general consensus here on this thread.

by Mike Payne on Oct 8, 2008 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

I’d be interested. I prefer yahoo and roto, but neither are dealbreakers.

Thank God McGrady isn’t a Piston.

by Something More Productive Like Roscoe on Oct 8, 2008 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

In again, but would prefer espn/yahoo to nba.com.

by Craig on Oct 8, 2008 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

I played in the NBA.com league last year (which was kind of whacked and I’m not saying that just because my team sucked), I’d play this year, I like Yahoo roto style (head-to-head is too intense I think). Yahoo is very easy to use, especially with free private leagues.

I’m in the Need4Sheed league too and that is TOTALLY WHACKED. There are like a million settings. I’m the GM of the Celtics in that league. I’ve pretty much traded everybody but Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. But it’s kind of cool. Definitely unique with the GM & agent angles.

by joejoejoe on Oct 8, 2008 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

Would love to be in, don’t normally comment but I do own a ginobili shirt.

Will say that if you use a roto league, I think a position cap would be nice so that there wouldn’t be too much streaming.

by Jason on Oct 8, 2008 3:50 PM CDT reply actions

I’d be down & would like to give ESPN’s fantasy league a try. I’m currently a Yahoo guy but have heard good things about ESPN’s fantasy settings. One in particular is that ESPN gives free stat tracker, which basically gives a live update of player stats. Yahoo does not.

User Preference: 1.ESPN 2.Yahoo
Format preference: Roto

@Craig: I’m joining every league your in this year for the sake besting every fantasy team you pretend to manage.

by DaveJ-AA on Oct 8, 2008 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

I’m in, and I’m down with head to head and Yahoo. And unlike last year, I promise to stay active all year long.

by Matt Watson on Oct 8, 2008 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

I would play, but suggest something other than Yahoo to organize. They don’t do live updates without charging, which I think is wack!

PS: I went to the first Blazers pre-season game last night. Two R.O.Y. candidates!

by QDog on Oct 8, 2008 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

definately I am a fan of fantasy sports it keeps an active interest in sports when your teams suck (i.e. The lions). My vote would be ESPN.

by TreyJ on Oct 8, 2008 4:05 PM CDT reply actions

By “pretend”, i assume that you’re referring to my dbb team last year, where i drafted agent 0, then puked in my mouth when he went down for the season? Or is it the yahoo roto that i took last year? hmmmm.

by Craig on Oct 8, 2008 4:14 PM CDT reply actions

I’m in. I usually play yahoo but have never played roto. Usually its just points but I’m fine with head to head or roto.

And I guess I cant pick Amir late in this league. He’ll be gone by the 3rd round :P

by Matt Gibson on Oct 8, 2008 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

Last year was fun but the style of the league was something I’ve never played before, (I think it was roto). And I really didn’t like the service NBA.com provided either and if I’m not mistaken, their draft was really funky.

If I had to choose a service provider, it would have to be yahoo.com, in a head-to-head league.

And if you haven’t notice, I am interested.

by Diablo on Oct 8, 2008 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

i’d be in. yahoo would be preferred.

by tedwick on Oct 8, 2008 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

I’m in, prefer yahoo and roto. Yahoo is less strong a preference, roto is a stronger preference…

Also, can we include that Celtics fan who got into flame wars with LB?

I don’t ever remember anyone talking about the Fantasy League last year, through the course of the entire season. It might of been mentioned once or twice (beginning and end) and that’s it.

by Diablo on Oct 8, 2008 4:42 PM CDT reply actions

I’m in.

H2H

Prefer ESPN. Yahoo charges for live-stat updates, and Sportsline can be glitchy. I can’t imagine anyone wants to relive the nba.com fiasco.

Just a note. If you want to be the commish, you should find a draft time very soon. Otherwise we’ll be drafting at 4a EST, or sometime in the 4th week of the season.

by kevin s. on Oct 8, 2008 5:05 PM CDT reply actions

Hey Kevin,
re: draft time— noted. I offered to take as much of the burden off of Matt as possible, so I’ll likely be setting up the league as commissioner. As soon as tomorrow, once we’ve been able to find a common consensus here and get an idea of interest, I’ll set up a league. Then we’ll work out a draft time. Hopefully we’ll find something that works for everybody, even our international pals.

by Mike Payne on Oct 8, 2008 5:11 PM CDT reply actions

I’d like to play but it sounds like there’s already a lot interested. What’s the max on participants? I’m in a Yahoo H2H league already and that would be my preference. I call dibs on Stuckey.

by Garrett on Oct 8, 2008 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

Hey Garrett,
Once we get a list of people interested in playing, then we’ll decide a final number. Who knows, maybe we’ll have to split this up into two separate leagues. I prefer playing H2H in groups of 10 with two guards, two forwards one center, one util and three bench (for a total of 9 players per team). But since we have a big group, that number is out of the question, unless we split it up. Who knows, we’ll see what happens…

by Mike Payne on Oct 8, 2008 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

(to clarify I didn’t mean playing in my other league is my preference, I just meant Yahoo H2H is my preference)

I’d love to get in on it too. Yahoo, head-to-head, and live draft are all what I prefer as well.

by Shinons on Oct 8, 2008 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

I’d love to try and get into a fantasy basketball league. Did one last year and did ok, but it wasn’t really meaningful enough to keep me all that interested, because I didn’t know anyone in the league with me. I’d say ESPN just because its free scoring and h2h or roto doesn’t make much of a difference to me.

by Tricks574 on Oct 8, 2008 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

I’d like to throw my hat into the ring. I vote for Yahoo, prefer H2H, and demand that everybody have a laugh-out-loud funny team name.

THE CHAMP IS HERE.
Last year’s returning champion humbly requests the opportunity to defend his crown.
I don’t care that much, but I’d prefer yahoo head to head as well. The NBA’s league kinda blows.

I haven’t posted much but I am a regular everyday reader of this site. Put my name down for the fantasy league if there’s still room please. I’ll play any type of league, but I do prefer the head-to-head match-ups.

by Tronk on Oct 9, 2008 10:40 AM CDT reply actions

wait, tiny is buddha’s fade away? i still have no understanding of how i lost to you. and yes, i’m still bitter.

seems like you’ve got a lot of names, mp. might have to split into 3 leagues. or even 4. it should be like divisions. we could even base it on geographic location! tight!

and then, hear me out, top 4 teams reseed and REDRAFT for nba playoffs to determine UBERDBBCHAMP.

by JackDutch on Oct 9, 2008 11:03 AM CDT reply actions

Last year was my first taste of fantasy and I really liked it. It really keeps you interested in even the crappy teams (last year I had Marbury & Randolph). I wasn’t that impressed with NBA.com’s site but anything will work for me. “Sheed’s Baldspot v2.0”

by JesseC on Oct 9, 2008 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

I’d like to give it a shot. I think I’d be up for any of the options, but I guess I’d like it on espn rather than yahoo (boo for fees).

by julie on Oct 9, 2008 12:03 PM CDT reply actions

Yes Mr. Dutch,
I was team ‘Fade Buddha Fade’. I can see why you would want to forget. BURN! (Considering how many of these I play and how infrequently I win, I have to really milk it when I do.)
As for people who are worried about fees, you only have to pay fees to yahoo if you want to see live scoring. I’m cool with anything except for the NBA service. That weekly lineup crap is lame.
I say the more teams the better. Let’s have a mega-league with 30 teams. No wait, that’s too many. If we do that, a lot of the teams will be unwatchable. Maybe if we somehow regulate the dress code…

by Tiny on Oct 9, 2008 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

“THE CHAMP IS HERE.

O so you are one of the those guys who came out of no where and stole my number 1 spot? X-( I should of won last year, seriously. I had the lead for more than 3/4s of the season and then all of sudden, you and one or two more guys stole my spot.

If we have to split our DBB group into 2 or 3 leagues, I demand that I’m in the same league with last year’s guys. I want my redemption. :D

I read DBB every day but I have never posted anything. I’d love to be in the fantasy league. Add me to the list if you can.
