Pistons look for perfection in Phoenix

The Pistons have a chance to go 4-0 on their western road trip, which is pretty amazing considering how rough around the edges they looked before leaving. Things haven't completely come together (Rip Hamilton won't shot 37% on the season ... right?) but there have still been long stretches lately that they've played as well as any time of the last several years.

Here's to hoping they finish strong and take care of business against all the familiar faces (Terry Porter, Grant Hill) in Phoenix. The ball tips in just a few minutes on FSN as well as NBA TV -- leave your thoughts in the comments.

I like Kwame’s defence on Shaq so far. I hope he bodies him up hard the whole game.

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If someone told me a year ago that I’d be cheering for an AI to Kwame Brown alley-oop, I would have looked at them funny.

That A.I. lob to Kwame was pretty.

by Boney on Nov 16, 2008 7:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The last time these two teams played, Amir blocked Shaq twice and then Shaq threw Amir to the ground with a hard foul. Let’s hope the young fella gets under the big fella’s skin once again.

by Mike Payne on Nov 16, 2008 7:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I like the Suns commentators… they’ve given Detroit several compliments. At first I didn’t even know they were Suns commentators. Just because you’re a homer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give respect to the other team. Blaha has always excelled at that. It’s nice to see another crew with the same outlook.

by Brad on Nov 16, 2008 7:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of homers it’s almost unbearable to listen to the home crew commentators during a Cavs game. I’ve been forced to watch on mute a few times.

Boney: That Amare dunk was for you.

Good for Amare for actually developing a jumper.

by Garrett on Nov 16, 2008 7:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Looks like Hamilton is off to a good start.

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No Kwame = No defense in the paint. Strange to say that.

by Sean W. on Nov 16, 2008 7:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know why most of you think Amir can just throw it down on anyone.

I like Amir but he needs to gets stronger, you just can’t dunk on anyone just because you have the athletic abiltiy, you need to have the strength in your upper and lower body also. Amir doesn’t have it…yet. Get him in the weight room doing squats, some plyometrics, and some hang-clean and he will be dunking on people at will.

by Diablo on Nov 16, 2008 7:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Sean, I wasn’t exactly sad to see Fred McLeod go away.

I’ve been on vacation for a week, somebody mind summing up the 400 post Lakers thread for me? I watched the game from a bar with friends and didn’t have the greatest view of the TV. I thought we were fantastic from what I did see. Thanks, I’ll hang up and listen.

Ah, Grant Hill. solitary tear rolls down my cheek

by Garrett on Nov 16, 2008 7:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, that was not what I was expecting.

by Laughton on Nov 16, 2008 7:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately, Amir’s lack of weight is painfully apparent against Stoudemire. Pushes him around like a rag doll.

by Brad on Nov 16, 2008 7:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Memories of the ’97 Pistons start to come to mind. Someone please stop Grant Hill.

Hey check it! They have their own Herrmann…

by Sean W. on Nov 16, 2008 7:41 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

You guys know that quick bunny jumping ability by Amir you all loved… I think that’s the root of his fouls. We need to keep our feet on the ground on defense.

by Restructer_It on Nov 16, 2008 7:41 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Amir can’t dunk on everyone, you’re right

but he can go straight up to the rack rather than double clutching because a hand contests his shot… draw the foul, go to the line

by Boney on Nov 16, 2008 7:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Mcdyess would be nice in these types of situations.

by Diablo on Nov 16, 2008 7:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’d rather see Amir get blocked trying to kill it than trying to double-clutch and lay it in. Especially since everyone says his athletic ability is off the charts.

by Garrett on Nov 16, 2008 7:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

We look atrocious.

by Other Matt on Nov 16, 2008 7:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What is this, 1995? Grant Hill and Shaq on fire!

We’ll see if Shaq’s still doing this in April.

by kevin s. on Nov 16, 2008 7:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

They are shooting 80%…

by Jim on Nov 16, 2008 7:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Wow… I just saw a Clippers commercial. “If you want us to play loud, you have to be loud!” Reminds me of being a Lions fan.

by Brad on Nov 16, 2008 7:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to think they can’t shoot 82% forever, but if we keep letting them shoot from 5 feet away I can’t like our chances.

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Even though Shaq just got that baby hook against Kwame, I like it. Kwame is HUGE.

by Garrett on Nov 16, 2008 7:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Boney: His body might not be able to take that type of beating, you never know, he’s probably already taking a beating just double-clutching and trying to finesse everything.

But power moves and dunks are not what I’m worried about with Amir, it’s the fact that he hasn’t showed any type of post moves to free up for easy lay-ups or turn-around jumpers.

by Diablo on Nov 16, 2008 7:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Kwame makes Shaq get the ball 2 feet farther out than everyone else. I like his physicality(?)

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

we need to punish Edmondson… how dare he think he can check Sheed

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Stoudemire rivals only Carmelo Anthony in the stupidest accessories and hairstyle category

by Boney on Nov 16, 2008 7:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Shaq’s trying to throw his body into Kwame, I’m glad the officials are noticing that.

by Diablo on Nov 16, 2008 7:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It seems that instead of driving and kicking out or driving and dishing, we’re just playing one on one and settling for jumpers. And a part of our game is getting out on the break, and we haven’t been able to do that with the suns shooting so well. Hopefully things will start going our way after the half.

by Big Mike on Nov 16, 2008 7:58 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

There should absolutely be a suspension, and a lengthy one, for that foul. Shaq is lucky that he didn’t break Stuckey’s neck. It was an absolute, ridiculous cheap shot.

That said, I love the way Stuckey has responded. We’re watching him grow up a little bit more tonight.

Rob G, I hear ya. I was just home for the week and I’m definitely home sick, but there’s nothing jobs wise for me to go back to. Detroit is on its way to becoming like Pittsburgh. My Dad is from there and when the steel mills closed down, all those jobs and workers left the city and went all over the country. I’m a Steelers fan, and there are ALWAYS tens of thousands of Steelers fans at away games because so many people from the ‘burgh moved. I was at a Tigers game in Baltimore this summer and was absolutely floored by the number of Tiger fans in attendance. I’d say that we were a good 35% of a pretty large crowd for a mid-summer game.

Well this game is out of reach, but I guess it does highlight the frontcourt issue thats been prevelant this year early. Really, not that I check the minutes but why does it feel like Kwame friggin Brown has been getting more PT than Amir and Maxiell this season? I mean its probably not true but it feels like it.

Rip Hamilton should never talk again after letting Nash stuff him like that.

Boney, Jesus Christ your like a scorned schoolgirl Cheeleader LOL!.
So what I was wrong? Most people thought the same way during that series felt the same way given the teams history folding in winnable series. At the end of the day, its not like them proving us wrong was anything to marvel at because we still didnt win the title and we’re currently rebuilding.

So whoop-de-doo they proved me wrong and beat Philly. Brag to me when we get a title. I’ll be there with ya then. But until have a coke and a smile and let it go when we as fans criticise the team. The reactions are normal of any sportsfan. Hopping on other fans instead of the players aint.

Is your life that uneventful that you sit there and make a diary of when people are wrong ?Course you do, like I said your a schoolgirl. You even post like one like with that “your explination=fail” quip. LOL!

Why dont you take that energy an apply for a Ball Boy position at the Palace or something lol.

The Suns are kicking our ass… of course the announcers are gonna gush.

The way they excused Shaq’s foul was criminal though. That’d be like me going to a 5th grade playground and knocking some kid to the ground because he was being aggressive… and somehow justifying it by saying I don’t know my own strength. It’s one thing to block a shot, its another thing to follow through when you’re A) huge and B) knowing you have your opponent in a compromised position.

by Brad on Nov 16, 2008 9:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I find the Suns announcers more tolerable than of course Bostons.

But in terms of straight humor, you guys gotta check out the LA Clippers local announce team. The lead commentator just doesnt care. lol. He ad-libs the most random shit ever. I remember watching them against San Antonio last season and he said something along the lines off
“And the Clippers are in a scoring drought with 3:45 gone by in this quarter. They’re just not having any luck……..although that guy in the 10th row seemed to have some with that young lady” without any cut to a camera shot of it or anything whatsoever and he just keeps going with that kinda stuff. He’s like a drunk pimp, Im pretty sure hes related to Phil Jackson

by prophecy_projectz on Nov 16, 2008 9:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Look, I haven’t come around on the trade at all to be honest, I’m still sure this team is out in the second round as constructed now (though that might change if we get Dyees back… not sure)…… but:

1) The Lakers game was pretty damn good by the end of it. Apparently we CAN win with Rip Sulking if Sheed wakes up and realizes how much easier AI makes his Job AND Kwame Brown focuses 100% on defense and tries to stay the F out of the way otherwise… that worked. Hate the deal or not, it worked, it looked great and if the Pistons keep doing that all year they will win a PILE of games.

2) Nobody wins every night

3) Four game West Coast road trips aren’t easy, they’re physically taxing and the team was due for a letdown after the LA game…

I take absolutely NOTHING from this loss and I honestly think anyone ACTUALLY watching this game can tell the Pistons are tired and half of them are already on board the plane home…

It happens… it just better not happen in May… knowhatumsayin?

P_P, it’s not that you were wrong. It’s not even really horribly, flamingly, ridiculously wrong. It’s that I don’t think I’ve ever seen you say anything positive ever. I mean, if you define success as titles, then I feel kind of sorry for you. It’s possible for a season or a game to be a success without a title or a victory. We’ll be really lucky if the Pistons win 1 more title in the next 20 years. It just doesn’t happen that often, there’s a reason they throw a parade when you win one, man.

by Sean W. on Nov 16, 2008 9:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@PG4L:

Like I said after the Celts game on Sunday: Get back to me in 10 games. I wasnt worried then, nor was I estatic after the Laker game. Better to have these difficult games early now and see what happens. But Curry needs to utilize the team more like how he did at the start of the season. I dont know but it just feels like Maxiell doesnt get used enough. Maybe Im not paying attention but I think he and even Hermann could benefit with a little bit more PT.

by prophecy_projectz on Nov 16, 2008 9:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Also, hearing the Suns color guy saying that the league will change the Flagrant 2 on Shaq because of the way Stuckey has played since the foul (something along the lines of how much he loves contact and created the situation where he almost got killed) is the most alarmingly stupid thing I’ve ever heard. And this is an election year where a lot of really stupid things were said and are still fresh in my mind.

by Other Matt on Nov 16, 2008 9:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No, they’re tired. They’re not closing out on shots. Their screens suck. They aren’t rebounding. The best player on our team tonight? Kwame. Hands down. Great D. And if Kwame Browns your player of the game, you’ve done something wrong.

Consider me a Knight of Kwame.

oddly enough hearing Grant Hill saying he thinks the Pistons mailed it in on the last game of a road trip like commentators and the guys in the studio said, makes me feel a bit better about this loss. Cause I know they can do better.

Looks like Rip found his shot. AI shot horribly. We won’t win if he shoots horribly and takes 17 shots. Nobody’s perfect. I glean no other news from this game, really.

If you live in LA and had to deal w/“Lakers will win 70 or maybe even 73” and “potential best start ever” up until Friday, you come to realize how eager one is to put the cart before the horse for their squad. 3-1 is a very good west coast swing, as JD noted. After Thursday, the Pistons’ schedule gets very manageable for the rest of 2008.

Shaq ejected following flagrant foul on Stuckey<<

Shaq also committed a flagrant last year in Phoenix but it was on Amir.

I think he is still upset over the beating the Pistons gave him and the Lakers in the 2004 Finals.

by Mike on Nov 17, 2008 1:15 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Considering that the Pistons have for all intents and purposes been on the road now for about 3 straight weeks they were due for a bad game. No way the Suns shoot that well if the Pistons have fresh legs.

Over the last three weeks the Pistons haven’t played 2 consecutive games in Detroit so while techinically the couple of one game stands are considered home games in reality because of the travel and time in teh city it is just like a road game.

The only difference is that they players got to spend a night or before the games in the Palace sleeping at home rather than a hotel.

One more week to go of the is awful schdule, then on the 29th the Pistons will finally get to play 2 consecutive games at home for the first time in about 4 weeks.

The schedule makers really love the Pistons.

Also, ran into some dbag celtics fans (I live in boston) while wearing my pistons shirt. In thick, retard bostonian accent: “nice trade, give up your best player for a cancer! Great job dumars.”

My response: “so this time last year u guys were what, 9-0? So I’m guessing you’ve been a celtics fan for…almost a year now? Happy anniversary!”

They looked puzzled.

by Forty on Nov 17, 2008 1:36 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

My prediction (Pistons win!) and information (Nash still out) were not good. Oh well. Fatigue is a real (but no excuse) and it’s hard to sweep a West Coast trip unless you are a 70 win team. If Detroit repeats 3-1 stretches until playoff time it leaves you something like 60-22 which is probably the #2 seed. That doesn’t suck.

I called it a night at about 10 pm last night and didn’t even bother to watch the rest of the game. sigh

by Garrett on Nov 17, 2008 8:18 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I was at the game last night. Seats were not that great, but in all honesty, there really isn’t a “bad” seat in the house.

The flagrant 2 on Shaq may very well be overturned, I am no expert, by after watching it over and over and over on my DVR, it appears that Shaq was trying to block a potential layup and Stuckey was quicker than Shaq realized, just my opinion.

Detroit seemed to have forgotten to pack up there defense when they left LA, 52 points in the paint, I don’t think any “defensive” team wins by allowing about 50% of an opponents points to come from the painted area.

There were a lot of Pistons fans in attendance as was mentioned. Most were “good” fans, several were extremely drunk and rather obnoxious. There was at least one other DBB fan there as he kept screaming “Free Amir”, the only Pistons fans I know that use that phrase have frequented this site, although most tell me they don’t like to post (why is beyond me).

Stuckey. This young man is a lot quicker in person than he appears on TV.

Bynum. Makes Stuckey look slow.

Rip. Looks like he finally found his shot, this is a good thing. A backcourt with Rip and AI running around is going to be difficult for any team to contend with

AI. The answer looked bored, perhaps all the moving, relocating and everything that goes along with a trade finally got to him, although 7 dimes isn’t a bad number.

Brown. Played excellent against Shaq, not so excellent against Lopez. Slow fat guys (read Perkins) should get owned by Kwame.

Wallace. I thought Rasheed would have been better off in the low post, when he did go down there, he looked like he could get whatever he wanted all night. However, with the game he had from outside against LA, I figured he would camp out and that hurt us. Several Piston fans around me made very similar comments. Everytime he had the ball, SHEEEED was screamed throughout the center.

Prince. If he plays the remainder of the year at 60% of this level, he will be an All-star and probably first team all defense, even the Suns faithful were giving Tay props, it was nice to hear.

As my wife and I were heading to the game, a Suns fan asked me if I thought Detroit could beat Phoenix, I naturally told him yes, but we were hear to get a look at our 2011 staring PF, this drew a small crowd, and shockingly, most felt that Amare would fit in well with Detroits offense, but that his defense would hurt us, after watching the game, I think Coach Porter has figured out how to unlock Amare’s defense, he wasn’t half bad.

All in all, had Detroit played defense this game could have been won. Hell, take away a quarter of the points in the paint, and this was a close game. AI didn’t seem like a liability defensively, even on the ball. Our man defense was ok, but our help defense was really lacking.

Mark Cuban started the website www.bailoutsleuth.com, which is a site that reports about the $700 Billion Bailout. I think the Wall Street big wigs, the Federal Reserve, and the SEC got annoyed that “one of their own” was trying to expose them.

I really hope Mark Cuban comes out of this innocent. He’s just being used as a scapegoat, just like Martha Stewart.
