Pistons get back to business
We're sitting here, and this is supposed to be a Pistons blog, and we're talking about weekend open threads? I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about weekend open threads, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about weekend open threads? Not the game that we go out there and watch and talk about like it's our last but we're talking about weekend open threads, man. How silly is that?
As promised, the weekend open thread has been zapped. Let's get back to positivity, good karma and watching the good guys win.
I think we'll beat Minny tonight.
I like slam dunk shots.

Lost in the wailing, there was actually some interesting comments in the open thread — I almost felt bad about zapping it. Almost.

The biggest thing we need to focus on right now is controlling turnovers over front court scoring i.e. replacing Dice.

i think if the pistons really focus they might be able to squeak out a win tonight.

Irrelevant to the game thread, but I was poking around on the internet and found this:

It appears to be kind of old, but there’s some good stuff there.

All-world PF Ryan Gomes in da house! At least that’s what the Pistons are making him look like.

I am looking forward to getting Dice back. I like having one big who can hit the j from the outside on the floor at all times.

How did the T-wolves manage to get Kevin Ollie, Mark Madsen, and Brian Cardinal all on one roster? It’s the Bizarro Big Three.

teams around the league fear us now!
i mean we shouldnt panick… we all know minni is a great defensive team, we’re trying our best
plus, adding a new pg to the system is a growing process, just look at denver and billups…

I also think that when we put Stuckey on the floor with only one other offensive player, it is setting him up for failure

Guys just stand there in the interior…
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 23, 2008 5:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Good, get aggressive in the interior, if the’re not gonna gaurd the interior make em pay too
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 23, 2008 6:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
We got the one of the greatest driving scorers in the league’s history, a forward with a great offensive skill set and one of the league’s best mid range shooters all against a lotto team not playing interior D and all we could manage was 34 first half points?
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 23, 2008 6:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I was just going to say — 34 points at the half vs. the T-Wolves? But P_P beat me to it.
by Toledo Joe on Nov 23, 2008 6:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
PP – the unit with Stuckey, Rip, Afflalo, Maxiell, and Amir couldn’t score…shockingly. The non-Rip starters all kept it pretty close (not that hanging with a lottery team is the goal, but the problem was clearly not with them).
That second unit misses McDyess…and Herrmann’s shooting.
by Forty on Nov 23, 2008 6:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
So I missed most of the first half. Is this a “the Pistons are missing wide open shots” game or a “the Timberwolves have actually played pretty good defense” game?
Also, are the Pistons showing any effort on defense?

Did you know the Pistons payroll is only $2.3M more than Minnesota? I learned that just now on ESPN Trade Machine trying to trade anyone and everyone on our team for some of the key pieces on the Minnesota juggernaut.

I’d say the Wolves aren’t playing transcendent D; the Pistons just cannot hit a lot of very good looks.

Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes probably both had their best halves of the year. I kind of follow Foye because I dropped him from my fantasy team and Gomes has always been a favorite as he was one of the only Celtics not to quit like a dog when they were a bad team at the start of the Danny Ainge/GM era.
by joejoejoe on Nov 23, 2008 6:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I remember during his rookie Randy Foye had a great game against us as well. In the Palace no less, kids got potential.

rip needs therapy. he is in mourning. uh oh. mourning supposedly takes a year
by andyfrombrooklyn on Nov 23, 2008 6:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Foye’s never going to be a great shooter but an 8-to-1 assist/TO ratio in the first half is as good as you can ask from your PG. For the year it’s 2.5-to-1 for Foye.
by joejoejoe on Nov 23, 2008 6:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Alonzo Mourning takes a year? To do what — ditch a current team and become a ring chaser?

This is like a classic case of Detroit complacency. Passing around, passing around, settle for jump shot.
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 23, 2008 6:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Detroit has no inside game on offense. I mean, they barely had an inside game when they were really good. Now the “points in the paint” come from slashing guards, but when the guards ain’t slashing and the jump shots ain’t fallin’, it’s ugly. Which it is now.
Having said that, Detroit is perfectly capable of coming back and winning this game. They just need to figure out what they want to do on offense.
by Toledo Joe on Nov 23, 2008 6:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
they are going to lose this game. and i won’t enjoy the crow if i am wrong because i almost don’t care if they lose trhe way they asre playing. it is just depressing.

by Forty on Nov 23, 2008 6:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by wolf blitzer on Nov 23, 2008 6:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by LawyerBoy on Nov 23, 2008 6:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Oy. How about Rip & Amir for Andrei Kirilenko? Then maybe Rip can turn that frown (and FG%) upside down by playing with a true PG again and the Pistons solve their “our PFs are green bananas” problems.

so i would think that his inability to screen correctly is one of the things amir can’t do that you can coach. while his ability to goaltend is one of the things amir can do that you can’t coach.

It’s obviously unfair to single out players when you’re down 25, but I’m going to do it anyway. How many good games has Rodney Stuckey had this year? I think Toronto might be the only one…he has been (for me) the biggest disappointment of the season. 8 points per on 38% shooting with a 29:22 a/to is not going to cut it.

Detroit right now has a bunch of good guards (Will Bynum’s play being the one happy surprise of the season so far), one good SF and one good big guy. That’s not enough. At least two of these three — Maxiell, Brown, and Johnson — have to play significantly better, or Detroit ain’t going anywhere in the playoffs. I don’t want to be negative — I’ve been a Pistons fan since the Kelly T. era. But that’s what I see.

God this is fucking embarassing… really, as a pistons fan they embarass me… cuz everyone knows me as a pistons fan and im from toronto… they’re representing me, and they’re stinking… and BAD
wtf is this? this used to happen maybe once in a while to us… but within the last week, week and a half the celtics did this to us twice, the suns did this to us, cavs almost did this to us (but some ill advised shots on our part actually went in to save the day)… and now the t-wolves did this to us
yikes
well dumars said he was disgusted when we took the celtics to 6 games and had one really bad loss (that game 4 blowout) in an otherwise competitive series (more competitive than the finals)… i wonder how he feels now… disgusted would be an understatement i assume
well no matter what, at least it gave detroit cap space in the future… but NY has a bunch of cap space now, and it would probably be a more attractive place… the one thing detroit could offer is a winning atmoshphere, and if thing don’t change fast they won’t have even that to sell to the star they wanna sign

For the record, the legend of the Cup, which is in the shape of a gatorade bottle, was started when Brian Scalabrine went crazy in triple overtime in that game 5 against NJ in 2004. When the Pistons asked for it back, he said Corliss Williamson would have to play him for it. Corliss promptly beat him 15-0 in one on one, reclaimed the cup, and banished him to the Boston bench. But after Corliss left the team, it’s become popular to steal it from the Pistons’ locker room.
We’ll give Cuttino a shot, JJJ, but just know that no one gives you something as steeped in history as the Cup. You have to take it.

I didn’t watch the game but read the comments. It’s funny because before the game started I think someone left a comment (PG4L?) saying Al Fefferson was going to light us up. I was going to reply and say, “He might light us up, but you’ll be surprised when a random scrub like Craig Smith lights us up.” Sure enough, Smith came close to getting the Cup, but a solid performance by so-impossible-to-stop-you-can-only-contain-him Randy Foye gave him the edge. Watching what he has Amir do is totally painful.
Amir’s 20 minutes tonight was a mirror of what his whole season has been under Curry.

This is great news. This will send Amir to the end of the bench and hopefully his agent will demand a trade and Joe D. will accomodate him.

The news about McDyess is the proverbial silver lining. He’s not The Complete Solution To Everything, but the Pistons have gotten very little, or very little consistency, out of bigs not named Rasheed, so another solid big will help.

This team sucks! Trade everybody! Look, Boston wins games, lets go support them!
Bah. Use some perspective people. Early in the season. New players. New coach. Shit happens. Love thy team!

I’m watching SNF and San Diego just kicked a FG to tie it with 90 seconds left. The camera immediately panned to Norv Turner who had a look on his face like “son of a bitch, we’re going to lose because we left too much time on the clock”. Say what you will about Curry, but he’d never be caught on camera with that look on his face.

As Iverson goes, we go. If you get a player with the idea of “raising the ceiling”, you have to deal with a leaky basement.

Mike, your last name wouldn’t be Johnson by any chance, would it?

Boy am I glad to miss this game. 26 point loss to the wolves?! Well let’s hope better times are ahead.
Just read an interesting note on yahoo sports:
“The Pistons are 0-3 on Sundays this season, having lost the games by an average of 18.7 points. They are 8-2 on the other six days of the week.”

Look, I’m all for patience because lets be real now that we’ve resigned Rip for the next 3 years NOBODY is going to give us fair value of him (percieved weakness = real weakness in the NBA trading market)…
But we did just lose by 26, at home, to the Fing Timberwolves…. POST KG era…
You can say “have some faith” but busting on “Haters” and saying “Love Thy Team” is a bit much, that was ugly…

The hating on the “haters” is to the extreme. It’s like the political equivalent of the people who say that if you don’t support everything the President does your unpatriotic.
Sometimes the best way to support your team isn’t to just have unadulterated faith in them but to question them and challenge the decisions that their making.
Granted, all teams have bad shooting nights, all teams lose games they shouldn’t. But mostly everyone on here that defends the Pistons sing the same refrain:
1.It’s early in the season.
2.We have new players.
3.Antonio McDyess.
4.Antonio McDyess.
Well,it’s early for everyone. Every team has new players. The new players and earliness of the season didn’t stop us from beating Cleveland or LA. It must be a surprise thing. One night were use to Iverson and the next he’s a complete stranger. And, oh my gosh, seriously get over the Antonio McDyess. We had him last year and we didn’t get as far as all fans thought we should have.
It could be that we can beat teams that aren’t physical, but teams that rebound, play the pick and roll game effectively, and play physical defense we can’t beat. The Pistons can’t play that game anymore and we get abused by any team that does. Minnesota and NJ aren’t good, but they play hard and they have guys crash the boards. We don’t. We lose to teams like that. We use to be a team like that. We were a team that could beat more talented teams because we played harder, smarter and tougher. Perhaps everyone forgot about that. I can’t imagine it because during 03-04 that was all the national media would say. Remember we didn’t have super stars like Shaq and Kobe but we beat them, not out of talent, but out of a team concept, defense and energy. After we won this team has played, hence the swagger and sense of complacency, as if they are the most talented. They forgot how they got to be a winning team in the first place. And instead of actually fully changing philosophies they’ve kind of half done so. I miss the old Pistons and when you have guys like Maxiel and Affalo, who fit the old mold, I’m frustrated because they’d be better suited trying to be who they were. As opposed to trying to out talent the Celtics and the rest of the league with Iverson.
With blogs relevance in today’s media the rants of fans are directly ripped off by press journalist and press journalist directly influence fans and the general opinion of a team. There is a point to the sharing of ideas beyond just being a “bad Piston fan.” If you think it’s pointless to complain about the Pistons how can you possibly think it’s worthwhile to defend them. Notice the lack of a question mark.
