Antonio McDyess will return to Detroit
Ordinarily I'd be a little dejected after watching a lottery team wipe the floor with the Pistons on the Palace floor, but not today. From ESPN's Chris Sheridan:
McDyess will re-sign with the Pistons on Dec. 3, after a league-mandated 30-day waiting period expires. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2008-09 season.
"It was a very difficult decision for him. He was weighing good offers financially, along with other variables he thought were important," agent Andy Miller told ESPN.com. "But going into the year he had a team goal set, and to not finish up with it, he didn't want to do that. He wants to finish the year, finish what he started in Detroit, then reevaluate after the season is over."
At least 17 other teams contacted McDyess, including several that could offer more than $5 million. Instead, he's going to take Detroit's bi-annual exception of $1.9 million.
"He gave up a lot of money," Miller said. "He felt a strong sense of responsibility to finishing out the goal."
(Thanks to about six different people from last night's game thread for the head's up)

It’s a good thing he made that decision before tonight’s game.

Now, more than ever, the other guys on this team owe Dice. Big time. He’s a bit like the girl or guy you let go, thinking “I’ll be alright; there’s lots of fish in the sea.” And then you go out to the bars, and you spend lots of money on Canadian Club, and you meet a lot of scummy people, and then you realize, “She/He was all I ever wanted.”

Especially the part about Canadian Club. :D
The fact that Dyess is returning makes me think this was a setup all along. I think Joe D brought Dyess into his office and said, “Here’s the plan…..” and then they finished their meeting by jumping in the air to high five.

I don’t know Rob G., Dyess just got an extra million and a half for essentially getting a one month vacation. If anything, dinner is on Dyess.

QD: It doesn’t matter who’s buying dinner. The question is: is that person sitting across that table your soul-mate or not? Dice is the Pistons’ soul-mate. Maybe he and Joe worked all this out; I don’t know. But this is a crazy world, and if you let something go, and it comes back to you despite temptation, despite others tryin’ to snatch it away, then you know this is real, man. It’s real.
Get that ’ship for Dice.

Gettin blown out at home by the Timberwolves????We suck!!!!!!We suck really bad right now and got some major frontcourt issues to deal with even when McDysse come back………..And a rookie coach……Just keepin it real Alwayz!!!!!!!

I hope that Joe and the staff would respect ,what Mcdyess is willing to sacrifice . In my opinion Pistons now have too many average frontcourt players. And also I think MC is too much in the statistic mode and his calculated syste that he like to implement. Too many substitutions, too many experiments … We need some defense and hard work. Two things that i can not stand are 1.When Rasheed starts firing threes 2. When Pistons are becoming lazy jumpshooting team. This combination is fatal and it becomes habit in the last games.. The loss w/ timberwolves is not an issue ,my problem is that Pistons do not have identity .Matt any opinion?
P.S. How Joe and McD have played the whole situations,is just a lesson for Mark Cuban and Jerry Stackhouse how they should act when there is trade and contract buyout( I am poiniting on the last year first failed tremade for Jason Kidd ,when Stackhouse started talking that even if he would be traded to Nets he will never play for th ,which made some talks around the league).

I was afraid that when I got here, after getting out of work on the West Coast, that there would be 500 negative comments about the terrible game. But nope, I’m not gonna read that thread, because what I’d been hoping for is here. Christmas a little early, and a lift to my potentially deflated emotions. Welcome Home, Dice. We missed you, man.
Regardless of what Joe D and Dice worked out with Andy Miller, I think it hurt Antonio a lot to be traded, even knowing he could come back. I think some of those offers must have looked pretty good, to be valued at over 5 million, not because of the money but because it means other teams appreciate what you bring to the table. Here’s hoping that Detroit appreciates it, too.
On with the season, it’s still November, right?

McDyess is the man with honor. I will forever respects him for this.

We either got very lucky, that this man has more honor and solidarity (not to mention an ability to forgive) than greed.
Either that or we back up the “it was all planned in advance” rumor and this makes JoeD just more or a good manager.

Dyess must have some really good friends on the team. Let’s face it, he could have been the guy who put CLeveland over the top, perhaps. Though I don’t know their salary structure for next year.
I really like our second unit with Stuck, Max, Amir, Dyess and Affalo or Bynum. Add Hermann and I can us running up and down the court and when that’s not available running th sets thru Dyess.
Really, really disappointed with last nite’s game. We just didn’t come out strong and that’s coaching. On the flip side I can see the last couple of days and perhaps the next few where we work on some sets and defensive calls. Not much time since AI arrived as we played a coule of games and then did a west coast 4 game tour and then got back and faced Clev & Boston.
Finally, I still think Joe D has one more trade up his sleeve. I don’t know what we can get for Sheed but Curry has to get him in the blocks. It should come within the offense, but with Stuck and Bynum and AI driving to the bucket almost at will, Sheed is starting to get too comfortable hanging out around the 3 point line.

Hey, he has to beat out Kwame Brown for the starting job first… (crickets chirping, light snickering)
Can someone gussy up a “Win it for Dyess” t-shirt design?
by kevin s. on Nov 24, 2008 11:20 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
kevin s: Yeah, excluding the Lakers, I would think Denver would have been a top 1 or 2 choice to come out of the West. The Cavs pick up Dyess, make a small trade to get rid of Wally’s expiring contract and suddenly you’ve got core of Bron, Z, Dyess, Williams with Varejo, Gibson & B. Wallace plus whoever they pick up dealing Wally. Scary thing is if the Cavs deal Wally to Charolotte and pick up G. Wallace for the 4 or perhaps move Bron to the 2 and Wallace to the 3. That becomes a very athletic team with Williams running down court with Bron & Wallace on the wings.

kevin: I imagine he won’t be starting, but he’s still going to check into the game at some point. He’ll get a standing O then.

So, Dice got 1.9M per year plus a 6M buyout on what was a 2 year 15M contract? Sounds like Mr. Davidson should write him a personal check for any difference after he figures out what he will make next year.
After the last two games, I can see Dice giving another “I came back for this shit???!!!” speech very soon.
On another note, does Canadian Club pay for the de facto sponsorship of DBB?

There is a significant downside to McDyess coming back, the current (sans McDyess) team is having adjustment issues with the timing and passing AI has brought. We can’t seem to keep our starting 5 on the same page offensively and now we are going to attempt to incorporate McDyess into the fray.
I am as gald as anyone that he is coming back to the Pistons, I just don’t agree that what he brings back will benefit us for many many weeks. If McDyess is used to spot Wallace and Brown, that puts McDyess on the floor with AI for about 12-15 minutes a night, thats 12-15 minutes of growing pains each night until McDyess figures AI out and vice-versa. The only way this can work in the near term is to sub at all five positions until there is enough practice sessions to get everyone on the same page at the same time.
The AI and Billups-less Pistons that won games 3 and 4 should be our starting unit with AI off the bench until we get enough practice in to allow our core 3 and Kwame to adjust to AI, then move AI to starting PG. This also allows the ball control offense to start and control the tempo, then our second unit which can run as it is now, has AI, Bynum, Afflalo, Johnson and Maxiell to run run run, completly change style and tempo of the game. Then when the TEAM is accustomed to AI and vice-versa, we can mix and match with anybody…just a thought…
by DJ on Nov 24, 2008 12:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Here’s the upside, though: We’ve got 3/4 of a season to figure this out and we’re in the East, so there’s not much of a chance of missing the playoffs while we do so. I think wins over LA and Cleveland gave us a false sense that AI was somehow fitting in already. He’s night and day from Billups, who was a very solid on-ball defender, controlled tempo, and ran tight offensive sets. Give it time.

“We can’t seem to keep our starting 5 on the same page offensively and now we are going to attempt to incorporate McDyess into the fray. "
If it will help Iverson continue to get acclimated, we could ask McDyess to bat the ball out of bounds and foul the opposing team’s off guard in the backcourt every four minutes.
I mean, seriously, how much is it going to throw off this team to have a guy rebound and hit 15 ft. jumpers? I’ll take talent (not to mention hustle and competence) over chemistry any day of the week.
by kevin s. on Nov 24, 2008 12:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
DJ,
Did you suggest that Allen Iverson come off the bench? Countless bricks on open shots is not AI’s fault, Rip couldnt hit a shot if his life depended on it(Dont tell me that since his passes are a centemeter to the left his entire game is thrown off. If he is so dependent on a single player than his game is entirely over rated). Sheed is content on playing like a 3 point specialist rather than the 6’11" player that he is. Rodney Stuckey is awful and Bynum should be getting every one of his minutes. Not once has stuckey impressed me this season, all he does is drive to the bucket and either pick up a charge, or not finish on lay ups. He doesnt ever dish it out to the open man. This team has some problems that have absolutely nothing to do with Allen.

“I’ll take talent (not to mention hustle and competence) over chemistry any day of the week.”
We have talent, hustle and competence now, what we don’t have is chemistry and confidence, McDyess will not show up and bring either of those attributes, this team needs TIME to meld thats all, my argument is adding McDyess will more than likely increase the time needed for us to regain our confidence and chemistry.

good, now put that worthless amir johnson back at the end of the bench and give mickdice and maxiell most of the playing time at power foward. maxiell could be the next charles barkley with time but we will never know unless he gets playing time.

This guy is fucking amazing. He could’ve went to 17 other places and turned down better money, and playing time on a number of teams with better odds to win a championship in 2009.
He CHOSE Detroit. How many people are choosing to come to Detroit for a team other than the Red Wings right now? Wow.
‘Dyess Raw is my new favorite player and I’m going to go get his jersey.

“Did you suggest that Allen Iverson come off the bench?
Yes, yess I did, until the team has enough time to practice and get use to each other, the games we played w/o Billups or AI showed that the Pistons can still play Detroit slow paced, half court basketball, AI will make this team better, but it will take time. Stuckey played very well as our PG during the short span where he was “it”, until this team gets used to the dynamic AI brings, we would be better off with AI TEMPORARILY in with the second unit, I am well aware that that is a highly unlikely probability, but I beleive it helps us in the long run.

AI coming off the bench will defenitly cause chemistry problems.

How about we trade the Canadian Club mascot we’ve seemed to inherit for this gentleman I know named Jack? Anyone?
I really hope Dyess coming back will help the rest of the bench adjust to the Iverson trade better. Anytime you lose a veteran, especially a veteran like Dyess that defines the word, your younger players will suffer.
I’m tired of stocking my fridge with crows, so I’m going to try to stay optimistic about this whole thing for as long as I can…
And no DJ, Iverson off the bench is not the answer (Jesus! I didn’t even intend to have a play on words there!). It’s still very early and this team has the whole season to replace the glue they lost when they traded Chauncey…
by WLM1 on Nov 24, 2008 2:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think Rip’s problem is in his head. Before AI, virtually every play had him as the #1 option. In a heartbeat he’s gone from #1 option to “get out of the way and let AI do his thing” and he can’t get into a rythum (sp).
I’m hoping with a few days off between Bos/Minn and a few more, we can get back to playing Det defensive basketball. And it sounds that way according to Curry. I saw twice, and I think on consecutive possessions, Stuck went under the pick and didn’t fight over the top. Each time the Celts got a bucket, a 3-pointer once I believe.
As someone said above, we’ve got 3/4 of the season remaining. Good thing this trade didn’t come at the deadline.
Also, I think Joe D has to sit with AI and say we believe you can fit into the Det system, not vice-versa. And our system starts and stops with defense. I think getting the team to play tough, hard-nosed defense will solve alot of chemistry problems. I think last nite we reverted to the non-chalant we’ll turn the switch on when we need to type of effort and that starts with Curry. We seem to either come out like gang-busters or gang-sissies at the start of the game. We need more consistency.
I also think we need to explain to everyone on the team that not everyone can shoot their way out of a slump. Play some D. Get in a guy’s grill. Rebound. Run the court. Box out for Pete Freakin’ sakes!!
Due to work related items, I haven’t been able to see very much action. However, it seems to me that the only person playing with a purpose for every second he’s out there has been Affalo so far. But as I said, this is based on a very small sample.
