The Pistons are in Toronto
Maybe it's me, but the Raptors have flown under the radar this summer. While everyone was busy talking about Elton Brand, Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley and Josh Childress, the Raptors what might turn out to be the most significant move in the East by picking up Jermaine O'Neal from the Pacers, giving Chris Bosh a DPOY-caliber running-mate. Seriously, that front-line has the potential to be downright scary.
Bosh has responded so far by average 26 points and 10 boards in the first three games. My, my ... he'd look awfully good in a Pistons uniform someday, huh? Not surprisingly, in the wake of the Allen Iverson trade that leaves Detroit with uber-cap-space the next two summers, Bosh has already been asked about Detroit. Not surprisingly, he's not taking the bait:
"I'd go crazy, man (thinking two summers ahead). I'd go crazy," said Bosh. "Trying to think of every option when you don't know what's going to happen? The ifs and what-ifs? If they're good. Are they going to have cap space? If they're winning. It's too much, man.
In all seriousness, I don't know what people expect him to say --two summers from now is an eternity in the NBA. That said, I won't hold it against you if you watch him tonight and ponder the what-ifs ...
Okay, back here in reality, Allen Iverson is out, thanks to a pokey Billups and Samb taking their time getting their physicals done with the Nuggets. Rodney Stuckey will get the start, and this will be a good barometer for how much he needs to improve his point guard skills considering he'll be going up against Jose Calderon, one of the top "pure" point guards the league has to offer.
The ball tips at 7pm on Fox Sports Detroit, and if your attention starts to wander, you could do worse than check out what the other side is thinking: RaptorBlog is one of the best in the business, and Raptor Republic has an interesting interview with Freep beat writer Vince Ellis. When you're done, of course, come back here and leave your thoughts in the comments.

My vote says that Bosh should only be referred to as Future Piston Chris Bosh. If for no other reason than to drive Raptors’ fans crazy.

I don’t think I can watch them anymore. They’re like every other team in the league. Whatever that means. But it’s my justification.

Wasn’t the best run in this franchise’s history when we had one of the three best PGs of all time? I.e. when we had a superstar?

Don’t get too high on Toronto yet — Bosh and O’Neal are impressive, but they have no bench. You know things are bad when they’re pining for the halcyon days of Carlos Delfino coming off the bench.

Umm didn’t Bosh just clearly go over Amir’s back?

Future Piston Chris Bosh is really sick too.

You know, Amir reminds me alot of Denis Rodman.

Much as it was fun watching him drive the lane with success against Charlotte, if either AI or Stuckey misses a game in the playoffs and we need to give Bynum minutes I’m not going to be happy.

Also, I loved that quote by Michael Curry. “You can’t make a young player earn everything. If you don’t give them a few things, they may keep it. But you can take it away.” That is exactly the way I want my coach to view player development. Young players can’t play well when they think they’ll get the hook the second they miss a shot or get a turnover. You can simultaneously give them a fair amount of rope and hold them accountable.

by Keegan on Nov 5, 2008 9:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
From the Toronto Star. The rest of the article talks about Iverson and the game.
But the Pistons still have the defensive tenacity that’s made them an Eastern Conference finalist for six consecutive seasons. They held Toronto to 44 per cent shooting in the first half in building a 54-48 advantage.
Offensively, Detroit probably won’t make substantial changes whenever Iverson arrives because what they do works so well.
"Mike is smart enough to know that he’s tweaked some things but he hasn’t totally changed things because those guys are comfortable doing what they do and they’ve been pretty successful," said Toronto coach Sam Mitchell.
"Mike is not a fool. He’s not going to go in there and overhaul everything. He’s still playing to those guys’ strengths. He was there as an assistant coach last year, he’s played in the organization, he’s played with some of those guys so he understands the things that they do."
What the Pistons have done is gently remake a roster instead of blowing it up and starting all over.
General manager Joe Dumars and Curry have eased in the likes of Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Stuckey, not giving any of them too much responsibility too quickly. But they have given Detroit a jolt.
"They’re young and athletic," said Mitchell. "I think Joe’s done a great job of, with the veteran players, bringing in young players who fit their style. Those guys know their role. They get up and down the court, they crash the boards, they play good, tough, aggressive defence. They fit in well and they know their roles. Those guys aren’t going to do anything they’re not supposed to do."

Anyone for AI coming off of the bench. He would sure add a lot of scoring to the second unit.
Stuckey is looking more and more like he is ready to start.

i was at the game tonight… exciting, great crowd… everyone was into it even tho some were disappointed AI didnt show up…. but wow, raps rallied to keep it from being a blowout (which made for a more exciting game anyways)
also bumped into quite a few detroitians (is that a word) down here… all of them nice ppl… i was wearing my prince jersey (wonder if that helped him!) so maybe that’s why they gave me love :)

Yeah Sam, we suck, it was mostly just a few small, correctable things on your end. And I wouldn’t worry about that Iverson guy not playing, he won’t make much difference. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even get us in the first round!
"We just didn’t play well," Mitchell said. "I don’t think they did anything necessarily, we just couldn’t guard their twos and threes."
by Forty on Nov 5, 2008 10:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Flip Murray and Mo Evans combined for 22, and still, I’m glad they’re gone and never coming back.
Hey, I only watched the second half because the bar I was at couldn’t turn the game on for some reason. But early on, it’s evident we’re ridiculously deep. We’ve won the last 2 games without Chauncey, and we appear to be adjusting to a new coach very well. This might just get really fun when we add AI. I’m thinking about going on Friday.

that was a pretty good game…
it is so refreshing to see a coach so unafraid to use his bench after 3 years of the twitchy coach who shall not be named. i mean, alex acker in the 4th quarter was a bit much, but nonetheless, it is as welcome as a cool summer breeze.
i was impressed that the pistons marketing people came up with that “five-rson” game plan deal so quick. that would’ve have at least taken me… 10 minutes.
i can’t believe how quickly chris bosh, a big mofo, drives to the basket. he’s like a guard. fpcb indeed.

I thought Kwame’s D was solid. That’s where he can stay on the floor. There were three or four times when Bosh or O’Neal posted Kwame up pretty deep in the post, but they ended up jacking up pretty bad shots which he rebounded. Solid D.

Like I said in another thread, I think this team, WITHOUT Chauncey or AI, wins around 55 games in the East. They’re that deep; they defend that well; and I truly believe Curry has these guys believing they can beat anyone, anywhere (and they can).
Now add Allen Iverson to that team.
Side note: Tayshaun makes his first All-star team this year. GUARANTEED.

That was a solid win, too bad I didn’t get to watch most of the game. I did add league pass yesterday and I’m sure to be hosting the Portland contingent of Pistons Nation throughout the winter/spring. I have some high hopes for the team this year!!

Someone help me here. Let me make sure I got this right. Once again we score 100 pts, shoot 46%, 23 Assts vs 5 TO, without our old All-Star PG or his future HOF replacement. Is that right? We have 13 TO’s total in 2 games without Chauncey or AI. Damn, I’m starting to see the beginnng of something good here Lady (PG4L) and Gentlemen. We do need Dice back though. I need Sheed to stop shooting 4-12. But I liked his rebounds. Lets go Pistons!!!!!!!!!

Some people just have to play devil’s advocate. Like if we don’t have an opinion that differs in the face of majority, it makes us self-concious of our individuality streak? It’s a personality trait like any other. I for one think this team is better than it was with Chauncey RIGHT NOW, and can only get better once we add AI and get Dice back. Give it a month. We’re going to be like 12-1 and either at the top of the power rankings or only behind the Lakers (the only team even remotely close to how deep we are).

Nice comment thread – some good laughs in there. The man-love for Walter Hermmann and MC’s suits are going to be go-to jokes all year. Hilarious: “looks like something paula poundstone would wear.”

The way most of our guys are playing makes Curry’s job seem easy. All he has to do is pick 5 guys off the bench and let them play. Yes, I know its more involved than that but I’m pumped for this season.

“So you are saying we go undefeated, and then get dropped 4-1 by the 8 seed?”
haha, I hope not. :-|

Bors,
Was at the game last night – no better feeling than making fun of the guy sitting beside you when he has a raptor jersey on in his own den.
A few comments;
1. The Air Canada Centre has nothing on the palace. It’s a rat’s den compared to 6 championship drive.
2. Some dude tried to tell me cheering for the Pistons is like cheering for the bank. Steady, boreing, and never wins big. My response was you cheer for a team that plays Soloman 20 minutes a game. Does it ever get boring cheering for the underdog?
3. I was sitting courtside…..yes…..Hammer’s suits were horrible. And yeah – Walter is hot as shit.
know that.

Agreed that Kwame’s post-defense was solid in that game, however, he needs to get better at pick ‘n roll defense. When his man stepped out to set a screen, he wasn’t doing a good enough job of squaring up to force the ballhandler away from the basket.
He’s also not stepping out fast enough on the screen which allows the ballhandler the opportunity to split the defenders.
Angling the ballhandler back towards the mid-line cuts down on the angle of the entry pass to the big man rolling and gets him further away from the basket making it easier for Kwame to recover on his man rolling, and easier for the other defender to recover and get in front of the ballhandler.
Ballhandler. LOLz
