Iverson’s home debut against the NBA champs
The Allen Iverson Era started off well enough on Friday... but then halftime happened.
Expect tonight's game to go at least a little bit smoother now that AI has had a chance to get another practice in and become at least a little more familiar with his new teammates. As if Iverson needed any more pressure making his Palace debut, the world champion NBA champion Boston Celtics are in town for the first time since that fateful Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
In hindsight, it's kind of fitting -- the fact that the Pistons lost that series is the biggest reason Joe Dumars felt a need to pull the trigger on a blockbuster in the first place. The ball tips in a few minutes -- tune in to FSN (or NBA TV) and, as always, leave your thoughts in the comments.

I’ve not posted since last year’s loss to Boston. I was bummed when we started this year with the same crew (essentially). I was hoping Joe would make good on his “everyone’s in play” press conference. It seemed, until last week, that he wouldn’t. Now he has. And while I’m sad to see CB go, I like the trade both now and in the future. I’ve thought for a long time that CB was at least 50% of the cause of the “entitlement” attitude that drove me (and most of us) CRAZY the last few years. Don’t get me wrong, I like CB, he’s a great player, but we NEEDED a shake-up. And a shake-up has come…
Let’s Go Pistons!!!!

Groan, I have to listen to the Celtics announcers. Luckily, they seem to have Tommy in the studio these days, not doing the color during the game. I don’t know if there’s ever been a more idiotic homer.

Hoping to see both Amir & Maxi more involved in tonight’s game. Deeeetroit basketball!

Is anyone watching this on League Pass? Is it up for you yet?

please, NBA TV, put on Blaha and Kelser…
by Mike Payne on Nov 9, 2008 5:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Shrug, the AI intro was kind of lame – “the Iiiiiiiii-verson”?
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
the whole entitlement on/off switch theory is such hogwash. winning 59 games requires sustained effort throughout the season. a sense of pride and comittment. the pistons may not have been the best team last season but questioning of their character is silly and an example of herdlike group think…..maybe ai will help the team reach a yet higher level of excellence but he could just as easily degrade the team a notch. we will see. either way i expext them to be a team that contends every game just as they did last year.

“Captain Richard Hamilton” sounded soo good.
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 5:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
NBA TV hooks it up. Shows AI’s intro (I was kinda underwhelmed, sigh), and gave us Kelser and Blaha.

anyone have a link… NBA TV broadband has this listed as “blackout”… thanks.

Did Rasheed try to pass it to the official?
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 5:23 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Good energy from the Pistons to start. The question will be how things go in the second quarter.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 5:26 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
once our shots start falling, we’re going to start killing em
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 5:28 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Celtics announcers: “the Celtics will take that shot” – right as he finished the sentence Amir swished it
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I love Blaha:
“Amir couldn’t be bothered.”
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 5:30 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
We are a wildly better team with Amir Johnson on the court – just saying. He got higher going for that board than KG.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
that “couldn’t be bothered” comment was both classy and classic
by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 5:31 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think Amir has conviced me that can make a wide open jumpshot. How long until the rest of the NBA figures that out.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 5:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Amir looks great. AI as good as we know. And here comes Herrmann and Stuck.
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 5:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
He had a line from last year that lives on in legend for me:
“Amir…he’s WAY too much for Radmanovic!”
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 5:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Herrman is just a spaz on defense… I love it.
by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 5:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I wonder how many fall away jumpers Garnett is going to take and miss…
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 5:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I like Amir’s D so far – I’ll be honest, I was a little worried he would be outfoxed by KG and overwhelmed by Perk, but he’s right in the mix…
by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 5:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
CHEAP foul on Herrmann guarding Tony Allen at half court as the clock winds down. Spazzing = fouls.
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 5:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Unreal call on Herrmann – even the C’s announcers can’t believe it – and that’s a STRONG statement
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Wow. What do the Celtics have to be complaining about. They’re in a close game despite being modestly outplayed so far.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 5:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
And that’s why Walter could never guard LeBron. Thanks, refs!
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 5:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’ll take a lead going into the second. Our bench is going to outplay their bench. I primarily worry about their ridiculous starting 5. And thankfully Pierce has 3 PFs.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
GOD I hate the commercials on NBA TV. The pregame show isn’t too hot, either
by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 5:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’ll take our ridiculous starting five over theirs. Actually, I’m wondering if our bench can avoid one of those 2nd quarter slumps we’ve been seeing lately.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 5:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Michael – Agreed. Unfortunately, that’s the thing about a team with lights out outside shooting. It’s always a close game…until they drill a few threes. Other than the 1 minute stretch where House and Allen made it rain, we outplayed them…but that’s a recurring event :(
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 5:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Well Stuck needs to step it up for sure.

Did Danny Crawford and Ron Garretson somehow sneak their whistles in here tonight?
by Gogol on Nov 9, 2008 5:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Why don’t we just give the refs the ball and let them play each other since they aren’t letting the players play. Haters.
by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 5:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Hey! It’s Eli Zaret! I haven’t seen him since he was one of the local sports guys YEARS ago!
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 5:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Whenever I see Eil, I was always think of:
“There’s a little of Denny McClain in all of us.”
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 5:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Forty, those were just some tough luck plays. If the Pistons keep up that kind of defense there is a good chance that it will pay off with turnovers and baskets later in the game. Stuckey bailed us out in a similar manner with that recent floater.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 5:54 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I guess I was just thinking out loud because I haven’t lived in the area for years so it was a nice surprise when I saw him.

by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 5:57 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
On the other hand, we REALLY have to learn that the first half is 24 minutes and not 12.
by Gogol on Nov 9, 2008 5:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Our offense has completely stalled since Stuckey came in. They just play 4 steps back and dare him to shoot.

When someone coined the phrase, “knock me over with a feather,” they were thinking of Rajon Rondo.
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 6:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
We’re not making free throws. That isn’t helping.
by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 6:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’d be offended. Since I’d rather have Stuck than BD (on most nights). I’ve seen BD just mail games in too often…
by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 6:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
God do they play suffocating defense. We are just getting owned right now. They turn us into a one-on-one team. Some of that is on us. But it’s mostly just how well they play the pick and roll and passing lanes.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Makes you realise how vital Chauncey’s leadershup was. We got one of the greatest scorers in the game and we still cant buy a bucket with these sets
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
i can’t wait till halftime so we can calm down and hopefully come out strong in the second half. We’re trying for minimal damage right now.
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 6:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
If I was Iverson I’d be pissed at Rondo and I’d really want to take it to him. I’d be like, “Who are you, trying to poke the ball away from me like that?” and then I’d drop 40. Hopefully he does that.
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 6:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Forty, I know Boston is a great defensive team, but it has more to do with our offense than their defense right now.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 6:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Prophecy, I think we miss Chauncey’s outside shooting and the way it stretches the defense more than his “atta boys.”
Look on the bright side – we weren’t better than Boston before the trade either.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
And truthfully, these refs are calling a HORRIBLE game on both sides.
by Gogol on Nov 9, 2008 6:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Michael – agree to disagree. I think they do this to everyone. They are one of the best defensive teams in NBA history.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
It’ll be hard with this Celtics defense…
They’re like us 4 years ago…or even two years ago…maybe even one year ago….you know before the Curry/Iverson era. lol
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:12 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
That’s defense for you! Nice AI!
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:13 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I understand they’re tough to score on in the halfcourt, but I wish they’d stop d’ing us up at the charity stripe
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:15 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yes, Boston is a great defensive team. But we are cold, cold, cold right now. We’re even missing free throws…
by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 6:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Over and under on the boys finishing with 70 points tonight?
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Why can we not stop quick point guards? We don’t even make them shoot first, we just crowd them and wonder why they burn us.
by Big Mike on Nov 9, 2008 6:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Did I say Over AND Under?….good lord.
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:18 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
“hurry up halftime”!!!!!!!!!!!! yes!
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 6:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Ice cold in the second, even with plenty of wide open jumpers. Plus their point is getting calls for contact on drives that our guards aren’t getting. Just like New Jersey.
I was kind of hoping that having a superstar would even up the officiating with our Eastern Conference rivals, not make it worse.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 6:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Great playcall to end the half. Let’s clear Rasheed out more often…from 30
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Big Mike on Nov 9, 2008 6:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 6:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 6:23 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m still optimistic for the rest of the season, but it might be painful getting to a happy place. Ugh. Hopefully I don’t slit my wrists by then.

by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
We miss McDyess’ outside shooting on that second unit more than I’ve been giving him credit. The Celtics are completely ignoring all big men not named Rasheed outside of 8 feet. It’s hurt them one time (the Amir jumper).
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 6:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
OK. The Celtics are right where we want them now!
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 6:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs

I can see a championship from here, you bet’cha!
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 6:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Okay, here’s the optimism train. Don’t forget, we were definitely the better team in the first. Our second quarters have been terrible, but we have all of the tools we need to fix this on our bench (we just have to figure out the right way to use them). Again, Boston is a great defensive team, but the Pistons are more responsible for the second quarter than they are. That’s a good thing because no one in the Pistons organization can control what Boston does, just fix what they do.
Now step away from that ledge and let’s watch the second half. Maybe we’ll get to see some Alex Acker.
by Michael on Nov 9, 2008 6:32 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
@Rob G:
I would lol. Remember how badly KG sonned him in last year’s regular season matchup. He’s young and he’s gonna be intimidated by them.

@Keegan:
Of course you do. We’re playing Boston.
by prophecy_projectz on Nov 9, 2008 6:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Know what this team needs right now? Olden Polynice.
by Keegan on Nov 9, 2008 6:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m not on the ledge. I think we have an excellent team and will win 50+. I just think Boston will win 60+. I think we take the 2 seed and avoid having to play both Boston and Cleveland. Who knows, if the refs are as active as they’ve been today, maybe Bron Bron will do our dirty work for us? They net outscored Boston last year in the playoffs…

Iverson can’t do it himself against boston. A big comeback starts with defense.
by Restructer_It on Nov 9, 2008 7:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
The Celtics can’t be the first team to pinch two guards together on D and deny the center of the lane. Let’s make an adjustment guys. Maybe that’s having Herrmann trail the PG and just let it fly if they pinch on Iverson’s first motion to the hoop?
Their defensive concept tonight is not dissimilar to the Nets’ zone yesterday…
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 7:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
On another note: Does anyone here besides me think that Atlanta is for real? JJ is the real deal.
by Dash Rick on Nov 9, 2008 7:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
This offense looks terrible.
It seems like the rest of the guys are waiting for Iverson to set-up the offense and follow.
And Iverson, is waiting for everyone set-up themselves up for some passes. You know, like an outsider would when they don’t really know how the Pistons offense works. I also think he is not sure if he should take control or not.

After 3 quarters Amir is the only one who isn’t negative on the plus/minus.

Amir better get his act together so he can get up to 30 + minutes a game or we can throw out the season

Bynum and Afflalo are going to get us back in this game. :D

I would say everything that could go wrong went wrong in this game for us. Cold shooting, bad shot-selection, poor defense, turnovers, lots of fouls, and we just seemed a step slow. And also Stuckey left the game with a mysterious ailment. Blah.
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 7:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Garrett, put that together with the fact that we played the Celtics pretty much even in the first and third and there might be some hope for the future.
Anyone have any good ideas on how to fix our second quarters?

On another note: Chauncey’s had a great start to his game. Coupla quick assists and a block plus a 3 already

I know the offense was going to be faultering but why is our defense so soft? Michael Curry needs to address these things quickly.

I thought we had quit early in the fourth. I’m glad we finished strong. We just got demolished in the second quarter. This is better than just getting beat by 5 every quarter.
I still think AI doesn’t know what his role is. He is clearly trying to distribute the ball and be unselfish. That’s a good thing. He’s going to figure out when he needs to be more assertive and when he needs to facilitate. And we all know what it looks like when he’s assertive in a controlled way – unguardable.

I don’t mind being the underdog and written off at all. First it will smoke out the idiot fans. And now we are going to have a slow process of understanding how to utilize all our talent. We will quietly improve the next couple months and be right in the mix at the end. We’re kind of like a kid gettin laid for the first time. We’ll eventually learn the right buttons to press.
-This trade will improve us this year.
-Also, Tony Allen is not a scrub, he’s good.

Stuckey has a long way to go. – 21 in 12 minutes
Maxiell disappeared again – 26 in 17 minutes
It is becoming more obvious that it was Amir that made the zoo crew successful last year.
=======
AI and Rip need some practice time together. It will never be as smooth as it was with Billups and Rip, but $21 million in cap space is a lot.

Yeah. Video quality can be crappy at times, but it’s better than nothing. (Especially for those of us in Europe who can’t watch NBA tv)
by Primosh on Nov 9, 2008 7:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
You don’t win a lot in the NBA shooting 35%. I’ll credit Boston for a lot of that.
A concern I have with this team is the deep rotation plus the Iverson change plus the increased role for Amir/Max there are too many new variables to figure out what is and isn’t working. I’d almost like to see Curry play a month with a defined rotation so that everybody knows in advance what their role is going to be, almost like hockey lines.
Also, CB was strong as an ox. I know there is a minutes crunch at guard but maybe this team now needs more, not less, of Afflalo, who is pretty strong for a G/F and can guard all but the speediest PGs.

Well, that was terrible. I tivoed that shit, but you can bet your ass I will not be watching it when I get home. I used to avoid checking the score until I got home, but jesus am I glad that I didn’t do that today. My teevee might not have made it through the night. That was entertainment for the evening too. Pistons ruined my day.
All I can say is IT’S EARLY!!!! I hope to Jesus that this is just part of the rough patch that will test us as a team and bring us closer together so that we emerge stronger and more able to punk Tony Allen, Baby Davis and Boobie Gibsons of the world. Consider me momentarily over the edge.

I agree JJJ – we’ve changed not one but two starters this year, changed our coach, and lost a key guy in Dice… and then added Iverson… that’s a lot to digest.
by Rob G on Nov 9, 2008 8:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
It seems like everyone agrees that Amir played better than any other piston. I didn’t see the game, so maybe he was doing a lot of little things, but 5 rebounds and 7 points doesn’t scream “give him more minutes” to me. Listen, I’m a proud owner of a Free Amir T-shirt, so I’m not criticizing him, just wondering if he really played as well as some are making it sound.
by Colin on Nov 9, 2008 8:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m with JJJ and Rob,
Plus rhythm means a lot in this game. There’s no puck in this game. We need to settle down with all the rotations. It’s like watching my son’s everyone-plays-middle-school basketball.

You Pistons fans got a good look what we Cs fans have seen all year — our second unit kicking the crap out of the opposition in the second quarter. Powe and Davis bring it physically every minute they are out there, something other team’s second string bigs have trouble matching. Tony Allen can take most covers off the dribble, and has really played under control so far this year. House has been lousy with his outside shot, but wither Pierce or Ray Allen usually gets a lot done with the second unit.
There’s something to be said for championship experience with young players — Rondo, Perk, Powe, TA and BBD have all improved markedly so far this season. The starters have been outplayed in most of the first quarters so far this year, for some reason, but the bench has been sterling.

Colin: Everyone else was PAINFUL to watch. Amir actually showed heart and hustle, like he wanted to be on the court, even though he didn’t do a lot of box-score damage. Bynum and Affallalolol looked good, too.

I think it’s going to take Curry 20 games to figure out this is a different team that needs to define its own style of play. This not the Pistons team of the last several years. I wonder how long it takes us to figure out the old Piston’s game got sent to Denver. I like AI. I’m fine with the trade. But if we have AI, let’s blend AI with Detroit, instead of having him watch the game from the side while Curry overthinks the hell out of things.
by JBump on Nov 9, 2008 8:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think we are going to continue to struggle against teams that play zone or aggressively deny us the paint. We all used to complain last year when we would just settle for jumpers. But that team had the proper personnel for it.
We are a lot more athletic now, which is great. But while I continue to like the trade, we lost a lot of shooting when Chauncey and McDyess walked out the door. It’s true our bench couldn’t buy a basket in the second and probably will shoot better than that over the long-haul. But we don’t exactly have a team of snipers on that unit either.
by Forty on Nov 9, 2008 8:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I want to see guys take it to the rim and try to dunk it every time. This means you, Amir, Max, and Kwame.
by Garrett on Nov 9, 2008 8:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
under 35% shooting just about says it all. I think it’ll take a while to fully mesh, but can we work on our transition defense? I know we’re trying to run but we need to get back… for real for real.
Anyone else notice that Rip isn’t getting the ball off of his normal 15 curl setup? That’s a bad thing. Rip’s offense has turned into him trying to take a guy off the dribble… which he’s TERRIBLE at. Our shooting was atrocious, but one good thing was that Amir showed up to play today. He’s was our best player on the floor.
by Brad on Nov 9, 2008 10:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think selfish will be a problem. I think stubborn will. Too many guys trying out. Not enough structure. And how can Rip’s movement without the ball work with AI’s desire to move with it. Sure, AI got more assists than Chauncy, but he gets them in a different way. Not as deliberate. He’s not going to look for Rib like Chauncy did. Rip’s gonna have to be looking for that last second pass as AI pulls the D than shovels it away. The reason the sixers went so far is that they completely responded to AI’s solo act. The pistons will flat out refuse to do that, Curry won’t have the stomach to ask them to, AI will do his best, but this situation blows. And make no mistake. It’s going to keep blowin’ and Curry won’t know what to do.
by JBump on Nov 9, 2008 10:52 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I looked at 82games as as of 11/4 here were the minutes played together for the top 5 man units of a few good teams.
Boston – 76
Lakers – 39
Utah – 41
Pistons – 26
Guys just aren’t on the court in the same sets together for very long. Even the ultradeep Lakers have a first unit that played 50% more minutes together than Detroit.
My 2c — AI/Rip/Tay/Amir/Sheed is Team Too Imbalanced and Skinny. ’Sheed is going to drift outside and Amir is too green to play against meaty NBA PF/Cs at the moment. Split the size/bulk between the starters and second unit a little more evenly.

The Palace was rockin’ when AI was introduced. The first quarter was very loud, but then in the 2nd qtr the crowd became dead silent. Fans were leaving in the middle of the 3rd qtr and almost everybody around me was booing the Pistons (including myself) when Afflalo got stripped at halfcourt.
Booo! The Pistons sucked today. There’s no excuse for not playing well on defense!
