Where do fans outside of Detroit go to watch Pistons games?

I don't know the answer to that question, but if you do, I'm hoping you'll tell us.

I know there's a group of readers in Portland who get together to watch games, and I'm hoping to help anyone else who'd like to meet up with fellow fans in other cities to do so. I don't know exactly how this is going to work, but I know there are a lot of readers in and around Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, so that's where I'll start.

In order to needlessly complicate add structure to this grand experiment, I've created four separate posts for DC, NY, Chicago and LA below. If you're a displaced Pistons fan in one of those locales and know (or want to know) of a good place where a fellow fan can catch a game without feeling completely outnumbered and/or having to argue with the bartender to change the channel, click on your city's link below and leave a comment. If all goes to plan, hopefully readers from these cities can either discover where all the other Pistons fans meet up, or at the very least organize a new place.

If you don't live near one of these four cities, just leave a comment on this post and we'll go from there. Make sense? I hope so. If there's any real participation, I'll put up a permanent link to these posts so other fans can follow suit and the word gets out.

I think I am about as far from the Pistons as Orlando is a series win.
Albany, Western Australia.
I think approx 20000km.

Ohad and me are in Israel – anyone else??? If we are lucky we get to watch some games on tv at around 3am our time

Well, I am in Bangalore, India. And the sad part is that I’m at the mercy of ESPN India to telecast the Pistons games. The best I get to do most often is to get up early in the morning and listen to the radio commentary.

I seriously wish there was a way we could get NBA TV coverage on TV here. Or maybe FSN Detroit. Sigh …

Don’t forget Houston! When not watching the game at home, we usually go out to Hooters to watch the game. To be honest though, you don’t see many Pistons fans.

I live in Clearwater, FL. Two of my friends are also from Detroit, so we usually get together and watch the games somewhere, but rarely do we run into any other Pistons fans (especially during this series considering Orlando’s the closest thing to a local team in Tampa Bay). Is there anybody else out there?

(Boston) — A bar called Game On. I hope to find a group of Pistons fans for the next series to deal with these awful Bostonian fans.

In Milwaukee I have been watching them at the greatest sports bar in the city: Major Goolsby’s right by the Bradley Center. Sometimes there is another Pistons fan with me, but there isn’t a whole lot of support. Most people here are cheering for (insert opponent).

I forgot to mention that I get all my games using any damn internet based method available, Sopcast and TVAnts being the primary applications.

I’ve got a few spots in Denver that I like to go to, like Andrew’s on Lincoln, and Gov’s Park. Plenty of Michigan transplants out here, but as far as I can tell, there isn’t a “Pistons” bar. If anyone knows of one (that’s downtown), give me a heads up. Otherwise, Denver is not a basketball town.

I’m in Indianapolis (and needless to say, the Pistons aren’t real popular here – apparently we forced their players to run into stands and attack fans, and subsequently traded their best players for 10 cents on the dollar…but I digress), so when the games are on NBATV I watch them at Jillian’s. I’m not aware of anyplace that Pistons fans gather for the games in Indy…

Since the Hawks generally suck, I have not had a problem watching the Pistons games at a bar here in Atlanta unless the Braves are playing on another channel.
Honestly though, I prefer to watch the games at home.

I should also mention that the last time I saw Detroit play the Hawks here, people would chant ‘Deeetroit Basketballll!’ when there was a turnover, and ‘Sheeeed!’ when Wallace got a touch. I was kind of surprised considering that the enviroment in the old Omni arena during the original Bad Boys run was so hostile.

Where do fans in Canada watch Pistons games? Toronto more specifically?

by adamreason on May 7, 2008 10:09 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to meet the group of Portland fans! I’m in Beaverton and don’t know where the other Piston fans hang out.

I’m in Canada, where the only sports that exist are hockey, curling, and hockey. It sucks. If I’m lucky one of my 3 sports channels will show an NBA game, but it’s usually the cRaptors, or they’ll show some random matchup, like Memphis vs. LA Clippers or something. I have to use my internets h4x0rz skills to watch the games online. That’s pretty much what I do for every Pistons game.

In Minnesota, there are four sports. Drinking, obesity, low-level child abuse and beige sports utility vehicles.

As far as basketball goes, there are probably more Piston fans than fans of any other team. That said, I usually try to catch the games.

Any other Minnesotans on the board?

Shinons, I’m here in the Indy area as well (Noblesville) and you’re not kidding about the Pistons hate in this town (especially a couple years ago). Where’s Jillian’s at? The name sounds familiar, but I can’t seem to place it. (I pretty much only get to see the team play when they have a game on TNT/ESPN or a Sunday game on ABC.)

I am watching games @ 2 o’clock am . Oh yeah I live in Latvia! It’s near Russia, northern Europe. I watch them on my pc by those p2p programmes.

It’s cool seeing so many Piston fans not just around the States but around the world. Being from Detroit I give you all much props for doing all you can to watch the games and just being a fan of the Pistons.

OT: The Magic have not sold out either Game 3 or Game 4 as of 5 minutes ago so for anybody interested in seeing the Saturday game or somebody within driving distance for tonights game you can still get tickets.

@Todd – Jillian’s is downtown a couple blocks south of the circle on Meridian. It usually works out well because they’ve got four different channels going all the time, so people don’t mind if you request for the Pistons game to go up. I don’t know if there’s anyplace better in Indy, it’s just become the habit.

In Managua, Nicaragua there is only a hand full of places that televise Espn (not ESPN Latin America,& TNT LA). But if your in town it has to be Hippos or Woody´s in Zona Hippos….

In Toronto, about 3-4 of us usually get together in my basement. During the run for the ’ship we were going to the Sports Cafe on St. Clair at Yonge. There were a surprising number of fans there at that time.

Get this…I’m a Pistons, UM, and Tigers fan in Columbus, Ohio. My friends are great at tolerating my Pistongasms and smiling and nodding when I run on about how much I love/hate this team. But I need a fellow fan to rant and celebrate with. There’s got to be someone else who reads this blog in the 270 circle with the Pistons “sickness.”

by Russell on May 7, 2008 3:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@Shinons – Wish I could do that (hit a place like Jillian’s) during the regular season, but with two kids in daycare (and my wife working into the early evening), I have to get back up to Noblesville to pick them up, making a jaunt downtown pretty rough. :) I should probably try the BW3 in Westfield next season. They’ve got a ton of screens there.

by Todd on May 7, 2008 3:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Seattle area here. I know there are a few need4sheed fans in the saettle area since one of them commented on a poster i had when the stones were out this way in the reg. season.

I watch all games at home and DVR-delayed since I’m never home in time to watch from the beginning (curse of being a fan of a EST team and being 3 hours behind…)

From the Birmingham, Alabama area.. I usually watch the games at home via TNT or NBA League Pass on the net.. but they are usually on where I work (Mellow Mushroom Pizza).
I was born and raised in Michigan.. and alot of Michiganders come down to Alabama in search of better jobs, since there is a Mercedes plant and I think a Honda plant as well. Me and my friend talk about Detroit alot when we play basketball, as he is from Detroit. I miss our great state of Michigan!

Anchorage, Alaska – From time to time people will meet at The Peanut Farm (which has the most and biggest screens in town). I tend to go to Platinum Jaxx (only because it is next door to my office) downtown, where they are usually very accomidating. With that having been said, 75% of the Pistons fans gathering I know of happen at my house.

Anyone else in the area, feel free to drop me a line and we will get something going.

jayo…

My apartment has been coined “Northwest Piston Enclave.” I’m close to Washington Square, so not far from you I assume.

You can e-mail me at: qdogpdx@comcast.net

We’ll be watching the game tonight, starting the DVR at 5:30 local time.

All at Q-dog’s place here in Portland area.
Watch them at home too but its always much more fun to watch with friends/fellow fan(atics)!

Gahhhh… I was hoping for no Reggie Miller tonight. He should not be allowed to explain things to people into a microphone.

(btw, Game thread yet?)

I am originally from Detroit and I live in Mississippi now I get to see the Pistons games on NBA TV. We have a small fanbase down here also. Mostly people that have moved here from Michigan.

Shinons, Todd: The brawl happened when I was at IU-Bloomington (‘02-’06). I had friends from Indy who didn’t talk to me for days because of it, no joke. Thanks to going to college in Indiana I was able to attend the magnificent game where “the block” occurred. I may or may not have reacted by pointing and laughing at a distraught youngster in my row (I’m not admitting to anything). I remember after our wins at Conseco, since there was such a significant contingent of Pistons fans, many of them would gather in one of the open areas near the exits and start chanting “Deeeeeee-troit Bas-ket-ball” in a sort of massive huddle. Tons of people who’ve never met each other before and will likely never see each other again just basking in the excitement of the moment. Watching the Pistons (usually) win at Conseco (especially during playoff games) was truly better than any home game experience I probably will ever have unless I ever catch an NBA Finals win (preferably the clincher) at The Palace.

All that said, while I loved Bloomington, I really liked Indy somewhat too. In retrospect, I wish I’d spent more time exploring Indianapolis, as it seemed like a pretty solid city (just one with misappropriated NBA rooting interests).

Big time Pistons fan in San Diego, AKA LAKER COUNTRY. I watch the nationally televised games at Oggis Brewery and the rest on League Pass at home. Sometimes it’s better to stay in and dodge the “ALL KNOWING” lakers fans out there and listen to Blaha

A good place to watch in St. Louis, Missouri is at the Ameristar Casino. The sports bar can get any sporting event you want (just ask a manager) and the booths have private TVs with sound! The food is pretty darn good too.

My wife and I have watched many NBA-TV and Fox Sports Detroit games there. During the playoffs, there are often people there rooting for either team. We had some fun with the Miami fans a few years back.

I’m a Pistons fan now living in Philadelphia. It’s easy to get the Pistons games on pretty much anywhere because this city is completely indifferent to the Sixers (even during the playoffs). I once ran into some Pistons fans at the Fox & Hound downtown but haven’t ever seen them again. I typically go to McGillicuddy’s. If there are any other Philadelphians on this list get at me! zmoney514@gmail.com

Anywhere in Phoenix or SF????? I am moving to SF for the summer and know no one. JUST IN TIME FOR THE conference finals and finals!

I’m a lifetime piston fan who grew up in Chicago. (HS and junior high were tough times for me!)

let me know!

I also live in Clearwater, FL and am a Detroit fan. Both my roommate and I are from Michigan and have a few other friends down here that are. Any luck finding a place in Clearwater?

I saw Chuck was in the same situation, have you found any place yet???
