Carlos Arroyo moves to Israel

Carlos Arroyo officially joins Maccabi Tel-Aviv: "Sources in Israel said Arroyo will receive an estimated $2.5 million net next season -- roughly the equivalent of a $5 million NBA salary after taxes -- as part of a three-year contract. The deal includes an opt-out provision that will enable Arroyo to return to the NBA after each of the next two seasons if he chooses."

Adios, Los. Please don’t dribble the ball off your foot too much in Isreal.

So Carlos replaces Will as Maccabi Elite’s PG. I wonder if this will be an upgrade or downgrade for them. LOL

Maccabi now has two of my least favorite Pistons in the past decade (him and Rodney White).

Orlando’s backcourt depth has really bled this offseason (Evans, Dooling, Arroyo). I would say that this means more Redick, but I think Van Gundy would sooner send himself out on the court.

@Dike – Will was thrown out. Bringing me to play point is an upgrade over him. At least i would turn the ball over so often or fuck up so many clutch shots.

Watchout Ohad, there’s a rumor that JWill is comin’ your way too.

@QD – Naah. rumors said he asked for 3mil+ a year and that Macabi thought his health could be an issue. Now that Arroyo is here we are done shopping in the US

Like a few folks here, I was excited when Carlos signed a few years ago. I had watched him do some pregame drills when the Jazz played the Clips after I had gotten there early (and my wife wanted to get J. Stockton autograph). But I also think he let his 04 Olympic performance get a bit in his head and he was never the same. Good bye Carlos.

ohad, do you think it means anything that the team targetted players with reputations of style over substance? Williams improved under Hubie Brown in that regard, but both he and Arroyo still sometimes go for the impressive pass and screw up plays.

I don’t know anything about Bynum, but hopefully he’s not the same kind of player.

@Paul: I think they started with the players they knew and saw and liked but those either signed with NBA teams or rival european teams. They found themselves with few choices left. The whole “white chocolate” thing was only because Macabi’s owner – ra’anan katz – is the owner (i think) of the miami heat.
Is bynum the same? When you’ll see him turn the ball over you won’t think he went for the flashy pass. you’ll just groan inwardly and try to figure out what the hell that was. On the other hand, with the pistons he won’t play 20+ minutes in a leading role so maybe with less pressure and other teams learning him to a lesser degree he might pull of a few good games…

I’d rather pay carlos 2.5 rather than boykins 3.5mil…

I always liked Boykins and it’s good that he got paid. That’s still killer money for a midget PG who’s slowing down.
