Rasheed Wallace answers questions
Thanks to Drew from JOCKlife.com for the tip -- it's as if he knew Pistons fans would appreciate a little lighthearted diversion right about now.

ahhh man Sheeds pretty cool but that interviewer was way too intimidated he should have run with what Sheed was saying instead of just freaking and heading back to his question list…
even piston interviewers are are crappy
Sheeds the man though but shame his game doesn’t live up to the hype and he costs the team with his tantys…

Lakerfan: “even piston interviewers are crappy”
1) Leave the kid alone — he’s an intern.
2) JOCKlife.com is a national site not based in Detroit.
3) You’re trolling. This was your last comment.

I don’t care what you say… nervous or not, I thought that was hilarious.

Those were good questions. Ramen don’t lie.
More fun ’Sheed stuff. I just made this…

MW – that comment moderation/annihilation was a thing of beauty.
As a follow-up to the Tim’s and shorts question I would love to know if Sheed also wears socks and sandals. Great interview.

Matt Watson:
“Laker Fan " was banned?
What do you expect?
That’s honest, biased criticism. Nothing offensive.
I’ve had College profs say worse things about what I write. The kid will get that all of his life. He’s good. An NBA star can be intimidating. Give him a break, but don’t block criticism.
I say: “Quentin: You’re GOOD!” Keep working on it!
“Laker Fan” is Banned?
I say let the whackos have their say, unless they’re advocating revolution or something. They expose themselves. They’re out there, and because of what they say we know who they are.
(Notice the “There,” “They’re” and “Their” contrast.
I wish people would learn that. I’m a grammar whacko. Ban me, because I criticize people who don’t know the difference.)
Best,
IrwinB

IrwinB: it looks harsh without context, but this wasn’t the first offense. It’s pretty rare for people to get banned around here.

No Matt,
You are plain wrong to ban lakerfan. On the other thread he posted on I saw opinions, honest criticism and a sense of humour even when attacked.Unlike true trolls he backed up his viewpoints and was happy to elaborate and discuss them.I saw him make concessions and he appeared to want to try to be objective. He refrained from direct abusive retaliation even when your other readers abused him for holding unpopular views. So on what basis did you ban him?…you are treading a fine line when you allow your readers who proclaim to be pistons fans speak like that to someone with different views.. then ban the laker fan while tolerating the abusive behaviour.
Not only do you insult your readership by assuming they can’t take care of themselves or fight their own battles you also fail to appreciate freedom of speech and the fact that people use blogs for a variety of reasons, not to mention the fact that banter between supporters of different teams could add something to the blog.I didnt detect a bad spirit with that guy. Can’t pistons fans take a bit of light banter from a laker fan! He wasn’t seriously rude to anyone especially considering people were immediately dismissive of him.
Finally what do you teach the kids here by banning him? That you can deal with people who hold different opinions by pressing a button and being rid of them? Its lucky you aren’t president.People should learn to tolerate and compromise with those who think and behave differently…instead you hide behind your official power and allow posts to go through congratulating your ‘heroic’ act when the banned person isn’t around to defend himself.
I didn’t see any warnings to lakerfan to behave differently nor did I see the people who engaged negatively with him warned or banned.
Irwin’s points are correct. Dont hide behind a context that doesn’t exist.
Personally, I wont post here again so you don’t need to ban me but I do think you should reconsider aspects of how you operate the blog.
Yours sincerely

Bilo: I appreciate your feedback, but as thoughtful and well-intentioned as it may be, I think it’s misguided.
For one, the purpose of this site isn’t to provide space for regular readers to “fight their own battles” against combative first-time visitors (teaching them life lessons in the process) but rather a place for intelligent fans to discuss the Pistons. If someone is disruptive to that end, I reserve the right to remove them from the discussion.
If anyone is as insulted as you suggest they should be by my (very) occasional moderation, they don’t have to stay. But for whatever it’s worth, those that do stick around seem to be enjoying themselves.

Also: Yes, there’s a double-standard in place that favors long-time contributors. And no, that’s probably not completely fair. But for what it’s worth, I never censor intelligent comments — regardless of whether I agree/disagree with them — only the rude/crass/inflammatory ones.

Matt,
Thankyou for replying. My saying I wouldn’t post again was not out of spite but more to assure you I wouldn’t continue to bother you.Clearly people enjoy themselves here and clearly you make an effort and do a good job but re-read that thread. What it contained was lively and intelligent discussion about the pistons and lakers from all concerned including laker fan.
Everybody was enjoying themselves and the inflamatory and unnecessary personal commenting was coming from one or two pistons fans…even then it was relatively light hearted I think. Many people were involved on that thread – it seems to me that lakerfan helped facilitate interesting and intelligent conversation – the dig he made at the top of this thread seems a natural and harmless progression and even if it was over the top (which clearly it wasn’t if you have to justify yourself with ‘context’ then surely a warning would suffice?
Anyway I was merely seeking to ask if there was not some other way this could have been dealt with that would be fairer while still not compromising your personal objectives. If the answer is no,then I guess it is no.But reading that ‘Hamilton to the bench’ thread it does appear that there were a number of people enjoying what WAS an intelligent discussion and the tone WAS lowered considerably towards the end by several of your readers, long time contributors or not.
Thanks again

Moderating comments is tough. But if you don’t set a tone, you end up with many low-quality comments like they get on the Yahoo! sports blogs. Or on the MLive blogs.
Disagreement is different than distraction or purposely trying to be inflammatory, which it seemed Lakerfan was trying to do. No one wants to be a gatekeeper, but sometimes its necessary in order to preserve the quality of the content/conversation.
