Pistons release Maceo Baston

It's official:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced today that the club has requested waivers on forward Maceo Baston. He averaged 0.5 points, 0.5 rebounds and 3.5 minutes in five preseason games.

The roster now stands at 15, pending a decision on Chucky Atkins. I assumed from the start that Atkins was brought in as an extra body for training camp, but I suppose it's possible he enters the year with a non-guaranteed deal, giving him a couple of months to showcase his wares sit on the bench before being released in January. The only contracts that count toward the salary cap / luxury tax are those still on the roster at the end of the season.

@J Dre: Pretty sure he meant he thought we kept him, until he saw this post.

+1 to you, still.

And so, the circle of life is completed.

He’d be a better fit in Tulsa.

by kevin s. on Oct 22, 2009 2:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Fuck Tulsa. Fuck the Oklahoma City Bombers too for that matter. Or maybe considering they’ve now stolen two teams we should call them the Oklahoma City Rustlers (as in Cattle Rustlers).

Either name would have been better than the Thunder…

In case anyone isn’t completely bored of preseason games, this stream is working, though pretty choppy and lagging well behind the actual game:

Wow. Jerebko just swished an honest to goodness skyhook from 10 feet.

for once, maxi is making himself a stat line.

by scntfc on Oct 22, 2009 7:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Re Maxi, 8 points in a half is fine, but one rebound and four fouls fills out that stat line.

Why is neither Kwame nor Ben playing?

Not much defense: both teams shooting around 60% at the half.

Wilcox having a decent game. . . .

Yikes, this third quarter is going horribly wrong. And I seem to be the only person commenting on the game.

by Toledo Joe on Oct 22, 2009 8:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@ toledo Joe
Yeah the Max line was midway through the 2nd qtr. I was expecting it to improve,I think its good that Kwame and Ben did not play. we know what we have with them. all the other guys is still a crap shoot. But charlie V… 17,9,3. I will take that any day and we still have a qtr to go. Stuckey is having a better game as well… at the expense of MFWB. I think at some point one of our gaurds may just come up on the short end of the stick as far as rotation goes. It is hard to give them all the minutes they deserve and then expect this team to win.

Um, does Hamilton have, like, thirty seven fouls in less than a minute? Or is that a strange Yahoo box score update deal?

by b23 on Oct 22, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hamilton, Stuckey, and Maxiell all have five fouls, Bynum and Jerebko each have four.

It’s hard to know what to make of this game with Ben and Kwame not playing. On the other hand, that’s hardly an all-star team out there for the Wolves.

by Toledo Joe on Oct 22, 2009 8:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

well I really dont think coach Q is playing to win anymore. there are still to many question marks in regards to the line up. So I am sure he is just trying to get a better look at who can do what. It sucks though because like you say “one doesn’t know what to make of these individual stats.” Stuck’s #s are impressive as well but do they translate to anything If we lose?

by scntfc on Oct 22, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So our defense sucks.

If Kwame or Big Ben go down for an extended period of time this year we will be a very, very bad team.

We let Minnesota without Kevin Love or Al Jefferson (and with Sessions only playing 6 minutes), score 122 points on us. And that wasn’t against our scrubs: We played Rip 37 minutes, Stuckey 32 minutes, Gordon 29, CV 29, Wilcox 24, and Jerebko was the only rookie to play more than 4 minutes. That is scarily awful.

by Gabe on Oct 22, 2009 9:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I get the feeling Q is experimenting more than playing to win. We’re a work in progress.

I just find it sad that teams like Memphis and Minnesota light us up, but we can shut down Atlanta. What the crunk?

by Terrence Lynch on Oct 22, 2009 9:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmm, quick correction: The espn boxscore seems to have been slightly faulty- nba.com says Sessions played 14 minutes.

by Gabe on Oct 22, 2009 9:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We won’t face 50!!!!! Free Throws in the regular season. So happy the real Refs are coming back. Sorry I ever called you bad names, you’re CLEARLY far and away the best in the world at your job.

by Gogol on Oct 22, 2009 9:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not sure why Ben didn’t play (he probably already knows Q’s defensive principles). Kwame has a hurt hand (insert joke here) and Tay’s got a hurt foot.

But, even if the three best defensive players were out, 122 points against the Laker starters would be unacceptable.

Watching Denver/LA right now…

Afflalo just stepped out of bounds for the 1,000,000th time in his career.

It’s like Q zapped the young players 10,000 light years away so they could get a taste of the Borg sooner rather than later.

this is a big year for afflalo. there is perfect opportunity on a good team. i hope he makes the most of it.

Maybe this is the conspiracy theorist in me rearing its irrational head, but does anybody else think that the replacement refs were/are terrible on purpose? Like, maybe at the behest of one pint-sized fascist commissioner? What better what to get us all to stop bitching about how horrible NBA officiating has been— and it has been BY FAR the worst of the major sports, just turrible— than to have replacements seem so inept that the original offenders look like saints in comparison? Just a thought.

by Joel on Oct 23, 2009 8:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Joel – I agree that there’s a conspiracy, but not for the reason you think. There’s a conspiracy against organized labor in this country. The refs now know there’s enough scabs to replace them should they get ‘greedy’ and ask for better pensions.

by Rob G on Oct 23, 2009 8:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the wee fascist would actually much rather have had the replacements be generally serviceable. That way, the ref union wouldn’t have a leg to stand on in negotiations, and Stern could have really stuck it to them.

by Waulie on Oct 23, 2009 8:32 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@Joel:
I thought the same damn thing. It’s a pretty convenient happening to show the value of the referees in the face of the fans. But since its the preseason, it’ll only have an effect on die hard fans who will watch the game anyway. He’d need to let the replacements get a month or so in the regular season to impact the fair weather fans, the swing voters that account for most of the NBA’s TV ad revenue. Those same people aren’t watching the preseason to see how bad the replacement refs really are.
