Stuckey 2.0

I agree with the majority on the last post, in that trading Stuckey would be uselss, unless someone were to make an outrageous offer that blew us away. He does have a lot of potential, and Dumars basically has built this team around him.

However, I seriously doubt that he will ever be an All-Star player. He played 31 minutes per game last year. This is a pretty decent amount for such a young player, so to really increase his numbers, he is going to have to up his efficiency. The only facet of the game I can ever see him becoming outstanding in is scoring. This is where he really excels. I don't think he will ever be an elite player, as long as we expect him to be a PG

Look at who he would have to beat out in the Eastern Conference to become an All-Star:

Jameer Nelson- Made the team last year, will have to bounce back after the injury

Devin Harris- Already an outstanding scorer, hard for defenses to contain

Rajon Rondo- An excellent team player, an outstanding athlete and rebounder for his size

Derrick Rose- Has already shown that Stuckey is going to have a hard time hanging with him as a rookie

Jose Calderon- Not flashy, but uber-efficient

You could also throw in guys like Gilbert Arenas and Mo Williams.

Honestly, do you ever see Stuckey as an All-Star PG?

Rondo may only be so good because of the team around him. He’s a poor shooter but one of the better lane playing point guards in recent memory. For now, though, you have to assume that Rondo will only get better (as he has done each season), and unless Stuckey really improves, I wouldn’t count on Stuckey being better than Rondo anytime soon.

Calderon? I can see him being better than Calderon in a season or two simply because Stuckey isn’t afraid to play tough.

But Nelson, Harris, and Rose are and will be better than Stuckey. I don’t see Stuckey ever surpassing them. Unless the Pistons become perennial contenders again, Stuckey’s not making an all star game. At least in my opinion.

He has the physical tools… Size, speed, and strength…

He has a nice skill set… He can attack the basket and finish with contact… and his mid-range game is nice as well…

Even under the constant turmoil of warring vets, a coach way in over his head, and constant line-up shuffling… he still put up 13pts, 5ast, 3.5rebs, and a steal. To me, it is impressive for a second year player (who also missed a chunk of his rookie year) to produce while being burdened in an imploding veteran-laden team…

It is not just a matter of putting up All-Star stats for him, it is also about learning how to manage the team (both offensively and defensively) efficiently.

Stop hating because he doesn’t dish like CP3, hit threes like Chauncey, grab boards like Rondo, shoot free throws like Calderon, or thrill like Rose. Let him develop…

Stuckey’s getting paid $3mil. this year and produced 13.4/3.5/5 last season
D. Rose 5.2 and produced 16.8/4/6.3 last season
Calderon 8.2 and produced 12.8/3/9 last season
D. Harris 8.4 and produced 21/3.3/6.9 last season
j. Nelson 6.1 and produced 16.7/3.5/5.4 last season
R. Rondo 2.6 and produced 12/5/8 last season

Seems like a pretty good deal for the Pistons. Who cares if he plays in the all-star game? The pistons have never been about star power.

The problem is..

There’s too many small guards on this team, and not enough big forwards. The bigger problem was, we paid one of them an exorbitant amount over the off-season.

I think that Bynum, if we let him go due to the fact that there’s no PT for him, will turn out to be a guy that got away. He and McDyess were the two real bright spots on the team last year. It’s fair to say that with Stuckey, Ben Gordon and Rip Hamilton, there will be little seeing him with three starting guys playing two positions worth of minutes.

I don’t think I’m really raising new issues here. But when you have a cost-effective option on the bench, I’m not sure why you throw big money away. Unfortunately, I’m going to say something pretty unpopular. I think that the Pistons should have potentially tanked this season. Maybe they get Chris Bosh in the off-season, maybe not. But the Pistons haven’t been really bad in a long time, and unless you unearth some real gems in the draft, you need some inexpensive, home-grown talent usually from the draft. We’ve been picking from the scrap pile for so long because we haven’t been in the lottery, where big men are at a premium.

I’m hopeful for this season. I think Charlie Villanueva can become a good defensive player yet. Maybe Ben Wallace puts up performances like he did in Milwaukee for a majority of the season and revitalizes himself here. But ultimately the goal is to go deep into the playoffs, and without a solid front line, I’m not sure this team is built to do that yet. If it’s just a middling 6th seed team, then I think a lot of fans will have wished we’d just done worse, and gotten a guy like Larry Sanders of VCU who can be the 4/5 that this franchise needs.
