Apologies for the communication breakdown amongst us posters-- here's your belated game thread. The Pistons are in Utah against the Jazz, whom our old roster was never able to best. Can we take them tonight with our new firepower? Tune in...

can we avoid the third quarter collapse?

by andyfrombrooklyn on Nov 21, 2009 9:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I posted this on the other thread and would like some replies:

So, I just had a heated argument with my dad about retiring numbers. Does anyone here think that any of the starting five from the last championship will get their number retired?

I argued that at the very least Chauncey and Big Ben will get their numbers retired, and perhaps Rip Hamilton. Joe Dumars and even Vinnie Johnson and Bill Laimbeer got their numbers retired, and Vinnie and Bill did less for that team than Chauncey and Big Ben and even Rip have done for this team. My dad doesn’t think that any of their numbers will get retired, while I think 2 or maybe even 3 will get retired.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

we were over at the other thread, PP.

by Drew on Nov 21, 2009 9:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think you need to reevaluate what Laimbeer did for those teams. He was a great player.

As for numbers getting retired, I would guess at least 2 get it and there’s an outside chance that 4 get their numbers retired.

by HoboJoe on Nov 21, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think Ben should of course. He gave us an I dentity for the going to work era. Rip: I think that depends on the rest of his tenure here. if he stays at least two more seasons then yes. As for Chauncey. I dont think he gets too much play. seeing how Joe allowed his # to be tainted by AI.

and how about our Defense? CV w/ 2 blocks in the first half. Wontcox sightings, Summers playing extended minutes…

by scntfc on Nov 21, 2009 9:17 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

A lot of hands in the passing lanes by the Pistons. Me likey.

by Kriz on Nov 21, 2009 9:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Our defense is looking good after the early dunk-fest. Man I miss RIP and Tay. I think our record would be a lot better right now if we would had those guys from the start. What is the word on rip. It’s just a sprain right? This isn’t a AI (my back hurts) situation is it?

by Ra on Nov 21, 2009 9:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

But if winning one championship meant automatic Jersey retirement, we would be in trouble. thats why you cant compare this team to the BB. IMO Bill was a stud, He meant just as much to that time as Ben did to the GTW crew.

by scntfc on Nov 21, 2009 9:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

UFC 106 or Pistons game…? Hmm…

by Garrett on Nov 21, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks scntfc for the reply haha. I agree. Ben for sure. No question in my mind, even though he left for more money. He realized he messed up, and came back. Also, Stuckey is wearing #3…that doesn’t mean Ben won’t get his #3 retired. Same as Chauncey; I really think he will get his number retired. He has been one of the most beloved Pistons ever, and was the finals MVP.

@Ra:
Rip would have only had a serious impact on the games against LA and POR. In those games, Gordon struggled, if we had Rip we could have made a swap instead of forcing the issue with Ben. It’ll be nice to have that luxury with Rip back, but beyond that he would have had a lesser impact.

However, Rip will prevent a bynum/gordon/stuckey 3-guard lineup, which I can’t stand seeing on the floor.

As for Tay, he may not have had as much of an impact as Rip would, but his D and 10+ ppg would have helped quite a bit. Thing is, our losses are always decided by 8 or more points, so I can’t say having Tay around would have swung that margin close enough by his o and d to make a big difference.

by Mike Payne on Nov 21, 2009 9:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

it will be interesting to get them back though. only problem i see is the bynum minutes factor. he must get at least twenty.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Nov 21, 2009 9:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What was Charlie thinking with that?

by Prophecy_projectz on Nov 21, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

When JJ’s shots start to fall he is gonna be a force on this team. He’s playing excellent D. getting timely rebounds. really cant ask for more out of him.

nice first half… tho im scared that we lost to utah yet again… crosses fingers

by mannie32 on Nov 21, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@MP

Maybe, but I think there impact is a little greater than you think. Having Tay vs JJ on the floor stretches their defense.

Plus playing struck, rip, and BG was an interesting and effective lineup in game one. Maybe we wouldn’t have so many garbage takes by stuck to the rim with no pay off.

Plus.. i think a couple of our losses were from some guys being gassed.

And.. Tay is our only low=post guy.

by kevin s. on Nov 21, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Ra: CV has somewhat surprisingly been a decent low-post threat for us. Better than Sheed at least. He’s taking 6 three’s a game. idk the stats on CV but it can’t be more than 3-4 a game.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

nine point third quarte collapse…wtf?

As much is pains me the bynum/gordon/stuckey 3-guard lineup has been out most productive.

I hate small ball.

by Kriz on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Give him some credit tonight, he’s got 6 assists and 4 steals. I think he’s outplayed Deron Williams in every aspect except outside shouting.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

lol!

by scntfc on Nov 21, 2009 9:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Ra: The thing with the 3 guard lineups is, we HAVE to have CV in there with him. Without a stretch 4, the defenses can just key in on the guards. With CV in there, it gives the front court some scoring.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Now if only he could get a triple double, then I can finally get that free curly fries….

I mean seriously, what the hell? Only curly fries, what a rip off lol. I believe Chauncey had the last triple double wayyyy back in 2004.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I also find it quite funny that our worst lineup this year has been our starting lineup over the past few weeks. lmfao.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

o.k. the third quarter bullet is dodged. now how about the utah jinx.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Nov 21, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Cody

Yeah CV has been good at times. I have been pleasantly surprised. But like Sheed he doesn’t seem to want to go down and call for it when he has a good match up.

He is not as skilled as Sheed with his back to the basket, but Sheed stopped posting in 2006 so… I love Sheed BTW but I’m glad he is gone. His heart wasn’t in it anymore.

by Ra on Nov 21, 2009 9:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@bmr: yeah i read somewhere that it was Chauncey. I think it was in the mailbag. I do remember watching a game about 2-3 years ago where Rip was one rebound away from a triple-double. It was funny watching the end of the game because it was a blowout and he wanted the board so he’d run down low after every shot, but guys like Maxiell and Amir kept getting the rebound and Rip kept getting pissed at them lmfao (not really pissed, but “what the hell, dude!?” pissed)

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Funny that Doc Rivers has already called out Sheed for jacking up too many 3s. Celtics management must be trying to count how many days are in 3 years lol.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 9:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I love it when that happens. run the clock and drain a three.

by scntfc on Nov 21, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of pleasant surprises, how about DaJuan tonight, he’s played a very solid game. Nothing outstanding, but nothing terrible either. Just a solid game, especially on defense.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@bmr

They had to know what they were getting with Sheed. Sheed hates the post now. Hates it. It’s so sad too because he was unstoppable.

The right DaJuan?

by PS on Nov 21, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Pop Quiz: what player leads the Pistons in seasonal +/- so far this season?

(don’t look it up, stathead, just guess)

by Mike Payne on Nov 21, 2009 10:01 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Will Bynum should be in the game right now. Stuckey did a very good job guarding him earlier in the game because he can match up in height and strength. Will has a bad ankle, taking out his biggest asset. Although he’s looked pretty fast, he’s got 3 turnovers to 1 assist and is a big liability defensively against Utah imo.

The best lineup seemed to some variation of the starting lineup, where any one of the rookies played SF.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Does ’Sheed have 3 years left? He was thinking of retiring this year.

Sheed do what he does, cain’t no Doc Rivers tell him how to do it.

Though the Pistons have lost their last three games, they outscored two of their three most recent opponents in the 4th quarter, and played the Mavs to a draw in the 4th. So I like Detroit’s chances tonight.

by scntfc on Nov 21, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@MP – Want to say Bynum. He just always seems to make good things happen when he comes in. It’s is probably Wallace or something from a defensive angle.

by Ra on Nov 21, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Only been able to watch the last couple minutes, but looks like it’s been an entertaining game.

And… that was one of the dumbest drives Stuckey’s ever attempted. He hadn’t beaten his man cleanly, and he dribbled directly into the help defender. turnover.

by Gabe on Nov 21, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Once again, I’d like to see Stuck, Gordon, rookie, CV and Big Ben. Why are you tormenting me Q?

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

UGH Bynum, you are lucky DaJuan is playing his best game.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@bmr: I pointed out above that our worst lineup this year has been the one you just posted.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

WHAT THE FUCK. These turnovers are seriously pissing me off.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think we just moved our collapse one quarter up.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@cody,
perhaps throughout the year it has been, but tonight it has been thoroughly better than the 3 guard lineup

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

lmao. that was all ball.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

ook. I didn’t watch the first half, so I’ll take your word for it.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

For what its worth, Stuckey is +5 and Bynum is -4. I’m just saying, Williams is an extremely tough matchup that by far favors Stuckey. Whenever we went to the 3 guard lineup, Utah seemed to go on a run.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

good thing we aren’t playing the Celts. “Ball Don’t Lie” would be yelled right about now. haha

Note to Utah announcers: I don’t care how long Kirilenko is. Nor do I want to discuss the merits of his length. Just don’t forget you’re paying him like 12 million for all that mediocrity.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I wish Gordon didn’t try to get too fancy on the drive. Excellent defense, but that should have been an and 1

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

b23, not really. It’s been a physical game both ways. But, it hasn’t been HORRIBLY officiated.

by Quick Darshan on Nov 21, 2009 10:26 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What the hell kind of fast break pass was that? Stuck was wide open on the right wing! Now the Commish better hit both of these so we can be beaten at the buzzer on the other end.

is kwame injured?

by Joe K on Nov 21, 2009 10:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think the biggest thing the officials have missed is the 6 second crossing rule. I don’t know if anyone else has been watching the shot clock, but I counted 4 times that Utah took 7 or 8 seconds to get across half court.

If you take into account those turnoves, we would have won in regulation.

But other than that, no complaints. For the most part, its been a well officiated game. And really, the only reason why I remember this is because the refs called it on AI on that game Cleveland stole from us in the regular season. So once again, no major complaints.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

lmao! last Piston win was 64-62. sigh. I miss those days.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Is it? I thought it was 6? My bad then.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That was a nice pass… to the Pistons.

by b23 on Nov 21, 2009 10:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Fortunately for the Jazz they are allowed 8 seconds to cross half court.

by Casey on Nov 21, 2009 10:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:33 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

by Quick Darshan on Nov 21, 2009 10:33 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Apparently. Yes. Twice.

by b23 on Nov 21, 2009 10:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

fuck! that was a all ball!

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, looks like the refs have given up any pretense of calling this game fairly.

by Casey on Nov 21, 2009 10:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get it. We were told Charlie was a bad defender when we got him. It seems to me that he tries very hard, just the refs give him no slack.

But yeah, that makes sense. The 3 guard lineup only works with CV. We use the 3 guard lineup alot.

Really? This is how we are going to lose? On a turnover after a timeout?

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Fuck, Bynum had no chance there.

by SadPanda on Nov 21, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Damnit Bynum, that’s the third time you’ve done that this game.

by Quick Darshan on Nov 21, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

And that was a foul.

by Casey on Nov 21, 2009 10:44 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Argh. I was hoping Ben Gordon would have taken that last shot, not Bynum.

You may get your wish, Garrett.

It would have been nice to have Rip for that sequence.

by Prophecy_projectz on Nov 21, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Damn, what a waste of some great defensive performaces. Stuckey, Villa, Summers and even Wilcox (!) had great games. Terrible offense however. Kind of like the Michigan game.

by Quick Darshan on Nov 21, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’m happy with Kuester, but his last second shot play-calling leaves something to be desired.

by Casey on Nov 21, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’m really getting tired of Bynum’s constant 1 on 1 play. I don’t really care whether or not he makes them half the time, it almost always stops all our ball movement not to mention he’s turnover prone.

by bmr on Nov 21, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@QD- Good analogy, but must you bring up the tragedy that was Michigan football?

by SadPanda on Nov 21, 2009 10:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bynum is nice for a change of pace. However, when he’s allowed to dominate the ball, he either dishes it to a guy who’s covered on the wing, or dribbles into the teeth of the D. It’s nice when it works, but it does not make for cohesive basketball.

He’s a good player, but I’m convinced that Mr. Fumbly Will Bynum cost us that game.

by Zachatollah on Nov 21, 2009 10:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Cohesion FTW.

by Cody on Nov 21, 2009 10:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bynum did what he does, he should have not been put in that position. The coach should have run a more productive play, considering his size and the fact that in the last minute of the game a nobody like Bynum is not gonna get a foul call, even if he is fouled.

by Kriz on Nov 21, 2009 10:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

People, you’re forgetting the most important part:

The Okurse.

by Terrence Lynch on Nov 21, 2009 10:59 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The Bynum play was just simple bad luck. He makes that shot probably 80% of the time, unfortunately the ball squirted out of hands at the wrong moment. But I’m fine with the play call.

Our final possession was crap though. Everyone assumed we were going to Gordon (which we did), I would have preferred using him as a decoy and just trying to get a quick 2, then foul again. I don’t think we had another timeout to advance the ball. But still, even if they made both, IMO it’s harder for the defense to set up after a free throw then it is at half court.

by Gabe on Nov 21, 2009 11:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it was simply bad luck since he had not been getting that shot off in the last couple of possessions but instead foul calls. Not blatant fouls either.

Even superstars might not get a call there, so why would Bynum?

I can even understand having it as an option, but he shouldn’t have forced it.

when was the last time ben logged 43 minutes. this game kind of reminds me of an ot loss in houston last year. dyess logged crazy minutes in that one. bring on the rif raff. i am sick of playing the best teams on the road.

I said it almost the entire game, the 3 guard lineup just was not effective against the Jazz. Kirilenko and Williams killed us any time we went to the 3 guard lineup. Bynum is good for a big spark off the bench, not starting, he’s not nearly good enough to dominate the ball as much as he does. IMO, you’d have to be someone of Wade’s caliber to consistently waste as much time off the shot clock dribbling as he does.

Say what you will about Stuckey not finishing his drives, there is ten times more ball movement when its just him running the point. Denver likes to go small fairly often, so perhaps it would be smart to put Bynum on Lawson. But Bynum simply should not have been playing in the fourth imo. We gave up 26 points in the 4th, including blowing a fairly decent lead due to our defense. I place this loss a bit on Kuester, simply because I think he’s overusing the 3 guard lineup in places that don’t call for it, like last night.

The stories about Utah tightening the rims so that shots don’t fall as easily certainly seem to be true. Looked like the Pistons had tons of shots go in and out. Not sure how that gives Utah an advantage as they have to shoot on the same rims, but the rim gods were not kind.

Loved the effort, and nice to see some good things from the maybe-not-entirely-wrong DeJaun. But it does suck to have this losing streak despite playing hard on the road.

On one hand, we’re down two starters (and arguably two of the better ones) playing very good teams on the road, so it’s not exactly shocking that we’re losing. On the other hand, despite the effort, despite CV making more of an effort on defense than some thought he would, despite some glimpses of real potential from the rookie forwards, the roster is still the problem. Too much 1-1 play from the guards. CV fouling out in OT was key, because (I know I’m a broken record), when he’s out we have NO front court scoring, which really hurts the offense.

Things will get better, I’m sure: the schedule will get easier, at least Rip will get back, the rookies will get more experience, the team will know how to play with each other better. But we are digging ourselves a bit of an early hole in the race for playoff position.

by Toledo Joe on Nov 22, 2009 10:14 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t get why Rip isn’t back yet. Bynum is playing on two bad ankles, you’d think 2 weeks would be more than enough time for Rip.

by bmr007 on Nov 22, 2009 10:39 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The more I watch, the more I realize that we’ve lost the two best post up players we had. No, not Sheed and Dice – Billups and Tay. Both of those guys would post up, Tay especially. Now, we really have no one. Wilcox posted a couple times but got no points. Kwame’s post up game needs a lot of work. I find myself wishing Stuck would do it a bit (like J Rich is doing in PHX). If and when Tay’s back, our post up game should improve, but we need more.

by Rob G on Nov 22, 2009 11:28 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bad ankle sprains take plenty more than 2 weeks to get right. And the last thing you want is for him to come back too soon, reaggravate the thing, and then be gone for even longer. I think the training crew is taking no chances with Rip and Tay. They’re not going to be back until they’re 100%, so in the meantime we force some scrubs/rooks to learn how to play in the NBA on a consistent basis.

Also, regarding the losing streak: I can’t recall one game this year where we didn’t have a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. We’ve yet to really be blown out, and even when it looks like it’s going to be one, we always come roaring back and make it a game at some point late. This bodes well for the future and our hopeful healthiness.

My girlfriend sprained her ankle on Halloween, and Friday was the first day she went without crutches. She’s still in a lot of pain, walking with a heavy walking boot for the next three weeks at least.

If Rip returns before Dec. 1, I’ll be surprised.

One of my colleagues at the school I teach at had a student roll his ankle. That student missed like two weeks of classes. It’s a far better excuse than H1N1 or “my grandpa died.”

amir johnson!!! playing well today
but vince carter keeping the magic in it, i like the additions the magic made this year

by mannie32 on Nov 22, 2009 1:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’ve rolled my ankles multiple times and they can definitely linger. A few healed up quickly, but others put me on the shelf for 3 or 4 weeks and looked like someone smashed my foot with a hammer a few hundred times. I’d rather see Rip come back 100% than come back early.

Rob G: It would definitely be nice to have a go-to guy in the post. Someone with an actual MOVE. Tay has a really nice hook but he doesn’t go there nearly as much as I think he should. CV has some nice moves but because of his range he doesn’t stick around very long down low.

Lions won today, that’s good, I don’t want them holding the #1 draft pick again. Plus, they are better than the Breveland Clowns.
