Tayshaun Prince out indefinitely

From the Free Press:

The Pistons announced Saturday that Prince will be out indefinitely due to a small disk rupture in his lower back after an MRI exam confirmed the injury.

The Pistons didn't give a timetable, but said Prince is being treated for the injury and will be evaluated further.

Such an injury typically heals through rest, and surgery usually isn't necessary. But it's hard to say how long the recovery will be.

In other words, so much for conspiracy theories about trade talks. If you're of the mindset that the Pistons weren't championship contenders this season (and, I hate to bust your bubble, but ...), this may not be the worst thing in the world if it results in the rookies developing faster. You hate to see that come at the expense of Tay's pain and suffering, but at least there's a silver lining.

this kinda throws a monkey wrench into all those trades.

Yeah, I agree. Tay’s trade value will definitely plummet as this news gets around.

At least Jerebko and Daye will get significant playing time on a regular basis for now.

by Kruza on Nov 8, 2009 8:10 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

We shouldn’t knock Tay. It takes a lot to sideline the dude. He’s tough. He’s a champion, and a gold medalist, and you know that he’d be in the game if he could. Not like this guy.

by Rob G on Nov 8, 2009 8:35 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Something was obviously affecting his performance for the last couple seasons- he has always carried out some of the tougher defensive assignments, without missing a step. I wouldn’t say he has no value- he can still teach the rookies-

by Rob K on Nov 8, 2009 9:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Tay won’t be tired out for the playoffs this year if he misses long enough. Between most of the summer off and now at least a few weeks, this could actually be beneficial. He does seem to have months when he is rested in which he can practically do everything. And if the rookies behind him get experience and demand time he will definitely be more rested. Not as good as a trade for a 5, but…

by Drew on Nov 8, 2009 9:31 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Rob K
I haven’t noticed Tay on the sidelines for a while, and know he doesn’t travel with the team.

Perhaps he could teach in practice, but more than likely he’s not going to be allowed to do any major movements. The team doctor might not allow him to even go to practices as a precaution, think Amare, they didn’t want him to get over excited and risk damaging the eye further. From there he’ll probably go through therapy while the rest of the team practices, so I’m not sure how much time he would actually be spending with the others until he’s at least 75%.

I just wonder how he ruptured the disk in the first place. I doubt Kevin Durant and Rudy Gay are strong enough to cause something like that if all those years playing against LeBron hasn’t. Maybe he was helping Joel Zumaya lift boxes and play guitar hero?

I ruptured my disc back in 07,everytime I have heard of it happening it’s been by some freak accident. I done it just by twisting to jump up in my truck. its no joke. it is very hard to recover from. and very painful. my injury was considered minor. But I couldn’t do the most simple thing, like put my shoes on, etc. the effects still linger today. this is serious guys. wish tay the best.

anyone figuring out what’s going on with LPBB? I clicked on the Detroit game and am seeing PHX/WAS. This sucks.

Screwing up your back is the worst. Hopefully Tay can recover and come back at full strength midway through the season.

Jerebko beasted that offensive putback, wow.

How about Detroit’s D and Ben Wallace in the first half! Tight!

by Ints on Nov 8, 2009 1:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It’s a blessing having Big Ben back, 11 boards and 2 steals in the 1st half in 14 minutes.

by rban on Nov 8, 2009 1:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Good half for the Pistons. Great movement on offense. You can see Big Ben’s age though. There were a couple points where he tipped the ball where the young Ben would have had a put back dunk.

As well as the Pistons have played, they should be up by more than six.

Is this the default thread for the Philly game?

Ouch, Tayshaun, major bummer. It hurts my back just thinking about it. I hope he gets better quick, being in pain sucks.

Hey fellas,
I planned on writing the game preview and recap today, with Kevin out of town and Matt at the game. I had NO idea it was a day game, so I dropped the ball… I’ll leave this as the game thread, sadly no recap either, having missed two-and-a-half quarters of the game.

Hate to say this, but scntfc is right about herniated discs. I ruptured one playing basketball. I just shot a running floater and when I landed I felt this weird twinge in my back. When I woke up the next day it took me a solid 5 minutes to get out of bed. I didn’t even find out it was herniated until I had an MRI about a year later. And it is definitely the sort of thing that lingers for the rest of your life. I feel bad for Tay – hope he can eventually return to form.

did I hear this right – Big Ben set the franchise record for the most rebounds in a half in this game? whoa.

by Rob G on Nov 8, 2009 1:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The espn box score says that Big Ben has played 11 minutes and has 13 rebounds. Im assuming the mins are wrong. Still pretty badass to have 13 rebounds at the end of the 3rd.

I love this team. I love that Will Bynum had 8 boards.

by Colin on Nov 8, 2009 2:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Big Ben with 16 rebounds! Nice game, and small ben rebounded from a bad shooting night
will bynum also pulled off an 8, 8 and 8 game

Pistons overcame a sluggish second half. Villanueva’s really starting to find his game and it’s making the whole offense so much better. Can’t wait to see how things will look once Rip and Tay get back.

Great minutes from the rookies. Daye didn’t shoot very well but his long arms really effected Kapono.

Iggy kept Philly in the game in the first half. Willie Green and (especially) Mareese Speights kept them in it.

It’s sad to see, but Brand looks like a shell of his former self. Speights should definitely be starting somewhere.

Dalembert did nothing. Kwame outplayed him.

by Quick Darshan on Nov 8, 2009 2:36 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The 8 rebounds is a little misleading for Bynum. A lot of them were tip outs from Ben, Kwame, Jerebko and Stuckey, all of whom were very aggressive on the boards.

by Quick Darshan on Nov 8, 2009 2:43 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@QD: I’ll be slightly surprised if Tay comes back this year. Maybe if we exceed expectations and he rejoins us for the stretch run and the playoffs.

Did you see the fast break when Daye had the ball? He just shifted the ball from his right to his left hand, and suddenly the ball was three feet out of reach of the defender, easy lay in. His arms are soooooo long! And he moves so smooth too. Anybody remember that toy “stretch armstrong” from a while back? Daye is kinda like that but silky smooth too.

by Peter on Nov 8, 2009 2:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@QD…there’s been some discussion for some time that Brand is just a bad fit with the way Philly plays, and I agree. It might just be the system and the complimentary players and not him completely. Actually, I have long thought (and not afraid to express it here) that he would fit in very well in Detroit.

Again, I will withhold judgment until 20 games or so…but this is about what I expected so far, with the exception of Big Ben playing almost like he was 26. Jerebko’s been a pleasant surprise, but I thought he might be something special from the start. I’m interested to see how he, Daye and CV will fit into the mix.

Finally, it’s almost a blessing Kuester got the nod over Avery. I like his style, very similar to his mentor Dean Smith. If you can coach anywhere near Dean Smith, you’re probably going to be ok.

by V on Nov 9, 2009 7:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@Peter
I think you might have just found another solid nickname for Dayeshaun with stretch armstrong or silky smooth

@V
I don’t know how good of a defender Brand is, but from a rebounding and scoring standpoint, yes he would be great here. But I don’t think we’ve got any legitimate pieces that Philly would want.

by bmr007 on Nov 9, 2009 7:36 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

@bmr:
I think Philly would take just about anything to get out of Brand’s contract. That said, I wouldn’t take Brand’s contract on, likely neither will Joe or Karen.
