The 7-Game Losing Streak Thread: Raptors 102, Pistons 95

The Pistons had their entire team in uniform and available to play for the first time all season, but the result was something we have become all too familiar with recently.  Free pizza for fans in Toronto and we're left with rust, dust, and this thread of shame.  Use it to share your thoughts until we can get a full recap up later this evening.

What’s up with CV only clocking 19 minutes? Didn’t get to see the game … travelling…

Wilcox?

Is there a reason for him to be getting minutes these days? Has he shown any improvements?

by C$ on Dec 27, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Maxiell?

I thought the same thing. There’s no reason he should get any minutes ahead of maxy.

This ain't no fun, y'all!

Well, at least we can draft Derrick Favors with our lottery pick.

New rotation, new problems

It’s going to take awhile to sort out the minutes with everybody back in the mix but I’m thinking fans are not going to be so patient now. It’s one thing to lose with a bunch of gritty youngsters and the revival of Old Ben. It’s another to have pretty much the same starting lineup we’ve seen for most of a decade only with Billups and Sheed playing winning basketball elsewhere and Detroit losing again and again.

Easy...but justifiable

I know it’s all too easy to blame the refs in a loss, but I don’t see how the refs didn’t dramatically affect the outcome of this game in the 4th.

I don’t know what the ruling is on a defensive player taking a hard elbow to the chest on the floor when he’s inside the restricted zone but if it is such that an offensive player can effectively just throw his extremities into the defender once in that zone to draw a blocking foul, then I may just have to stop watching this sport. Additionally, the lack of a charging call that Stuckey clearly took with 1:20 to go gave Toronto another possession and ultimately another bucket extending their lead to 6.

Two loose ball fouls on Ben Gordon both of which were at best no calls, a blocking foul on Charlie Villanueva when Marcus Banks was so obviously out of control that again if not a charge then clearly a no-call. Oh and then there were the multiple no calls on drives to the basket from Gordon, Stuckey, and Rip.

Despite the fact that fouls were 33 to 32 with the Pistons getting one more, the obvious inconsistency in playcalling and the timing of the calls resulted in Toronto getting 11 additional free throws shooting 44 for the game and prevented Detroit from keeping the momentum going late in the 4th.

That said, I was impressed to see us make it a game in the second half (which I attribute almost enitrely to Jerebko).

And once again I’m happy to see Amir Johnson gone with a line or 4 fouls, 1 TO, 3 rebounds, 2 points, and 1 steal in 15 minutes of play.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.

I disagree actually....

The officiating was bad, yes. But I don’t think we can fully blame that on what lost us the game. The fact that it was 33-32 means that regardless of the “timing” of the calls and how the timing affected the plays, both teams got bad calls. Both teams got “no calls” because the refs saw flops instead of charges. And there were ticky-tack fouls on both sides. I know we saw that utterly ridiculous call on JJ and some of the other calls but remember, there were also calls on the other end that we saw as obvious fouls but, like us, the other side would argue were ridiculous calls that led to opportunities for the Pistons. And we missed some KEY freethrows with Wallace at the line. We make those baskets, maybe we’re not so pissed about the fouls on the other end. We make some baskets in the first half, maybe we’re not so pissed about the fouls at the end of the game.

The officiating WAS horrible, but you cannot blame the refs in a loss like that. We just gotta regroup, Get our key guys time to shake off the rust and beat the knicks and bulls next coming up.

I guess maybe I overstated my position on it. Our poor defense (especially that of Villanueva) was just as much a factor in this loss as the officiating, however, I still feel that the refs (whether they meant to or not) were working against us in the last 4 minutes of this game.

All I can say is

I can’t wait to get my hands on some of these teams we’ve been losing to with a fully healthy team with a chip on their shoulders. Having more guys in the rotation is a problem I like to have.

If ’Sheed is already at 10 techs in Boston can you imagine how many times he would have been suspended already had we resigned?

Bring on January.

Give them time

We may have everyone back but they are probably a little bit from fully recovering. If we are still talking 7 game losing streaks at the end of January, then all bets are off.
