Pistons at 76ers Game Thread
Game starts now! Foiled by the early start time.
Will Iverson deform our defense and deliver a rare win for the hobbled 76ers?
Will the Pistons stop trying to shoot three pointers entirely?
Will Matt beat me to the punch here, creating an awkward double thread?
Let's find out!

That’s actually giving me the Pacers/Blazers, but maybe it’ll switch at 7:30 or so?
Also, I didn’t know Haywoode Workman was a ref. Neat.

LPBB is showing Pacers/Blazers. I find myself upset. Oh, well, I have to teach a class anyway.

LOLOLOL! Stuckey just made AI fall to the fucking ground.

Rodney Stuckey just made Iverson fall and the crowd went, “Oooooo!” then he calmly hit the jumper. Oh yes.

Stons being sloppy and Sixers turning that defensive heat.

If you hear AIR BALL! AIR BALL! Next time AI touches it that’s me.
by Other Matt on Dec 9, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions
So that was one of our worst quarters of basketball in a while and we’re up by 2.
We need to put the hammer down on Philly, cut the turnovers, and just generally not beat ourselves. They’re not a very good team, but if we keep playing the way we’re playing they can beat us.
by Gabe on Dec 9, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions
Great block by Daye!
And Kwame blows what should have been an easy assist from Stuckey.
by Gabe on Dec 9, 2009 7:42 PM EST reply actions
why wasn’t that an offensive? green ran right into him? were his feet really that not set?
by Joe K on Dec 9, 2009 7:42 PM EST reply actions
Its no wonder Philly has lost 9 straight. They are a fundamentally dumb basketball team jeeze. All the Pistons gotta do is set picks on them.
by Prophecy_projectz on Dec 9, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions
Big Ben’s gotta show Daye how to flop there. He was in perfect position to take a charge, but because he didn’t sprawl backwards like he just got shot, the refs didn’t call it.

by Prophecy_projectz on Dec 9, 2009 7:53 PM EST reply actions
scntfc: I’ve always wondered that about the league. If Player X is going to foul LeBron on the way to the rim, then he’s probably going to foul a lot of other guys on their way to the rim, too. Stuckey is a prime example, though, of a guy throwing his body into defenders and just not getting those calls.
by Garrett on Dec 9, 2009 7:53 PM EST reply actions
Jerebko with an offensive rebound, then tipping another board back out. Awesome.

Sixer looking just as bad lol
I see why both teams are under .500
God do I miss BG Tay and RIP, we could use the offense
by KG on Dec 9, 2009 7:56 PM EST reply actions
to get foul calls a player has to show that he can make shots. le bron and kobe make shots. ai used to. stuckey doesn’t.
by andyfrombrooklyn on Dec 9, 2009 7:58 PM EST reply actions

Horrible defense from JJ. Completely lost his man, giving up an open 3.
by Gabe on Dec 9, 2009 8:02 PM EST reply actions
Nice take Stuckey…should have gotten a foul with that lay up.
by Jim on Dec 9, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions
Kwame Brown is 6-6 from the free throw line?
Buwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
by Terrence Lynch on Dec 9, 2009 8:10 PM EST reply actions
CV has a horrible habit of bring his arms down hard when he gets posted up. Brand worked himself into a weird off-balance shot, and instead of just letting him try to make it, CV brought both arms down and got called for the foul.
by Gabe on Dec 9, 2009 8:10 PM EST reply actions
Any game where Kwame has a double digit first half is beautiful.
by Mike S on Dec 9, 2009 8:10 PM EST reply actions
Stuckey bears an eery resemblance to AI this game.
by scntfc on Dec 9, 2009 8:13 PM EST reply actions
Stuckey’s agression is one of the few bright points of an otherwise ugly ass game

LOL yea pretty much^ awful half of basketball both teams lol

George and Greg sound like they’re trying to talk into a speakerphone that’s across the room.
by Zachatollah on Dec 9, 2009 8:18 PM EST reply actions
@Gulk: Elton Brand for them, Kwame and Max for us. Somewhat Rodney
by Cody on Dec 9, 2009 8:18 PM EST reply actions
Without Gordon, Hamilton, and Prince, the talent level between Philly and Detroit is minimal.
So we’re both crappy teams right now. Also, Philly has lost 10 straight so you know they’re desperate for a win.
by Terrence Lynch on Dec 9, 2009 8:18 PM EST reply actions
On the bright side, Atlanta is beating Chicago and Portland is beating Indiana. Not sure who to root for in the Toronto/Milwaukee game.
by Quick Darshan on Dec 9, 2009 8:19 PM EST reply actions
@QD: Toronto! Think of the film festivals, QD! The film festivals!
by Garrett on Dec 9, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply actions
@Gabe, I’ve noticed that about CV too. He’ll play good defense and then he’ll not keep his arms straight up and get a stupid unnecessary foul.
by Quick Darshan on Dec 9, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions
Garrett, which team is more of a threat to keep Detroit out of the playoffs. I’m not sure. I’ll root for Toronto, since Milwaukee is in the division.
by Quick Darshan on Dec 9, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions
Who’s good?
-Stuckey. He’s being aggressive and has a couple lay-ups near the rim, as well as a few trips to the line.
-Kwame. When he’s on, he’s a foul-drawing machine. He’s on, besides one silly turnover.
-Elton Brand. He’s aggressive, and forcing the Piston bigs to foul him in the low post.
The bad:
-Will Bynum’s jump shot. He’s forced a couple stinkers, but played decent defense at least.
-AI. He’s getting near the rim, but missing all but one of his shots. He looks like a guy who’s been drinking Hennessey the past 8 months.
-Jerebko’s offensive game. He’s a black hole of missed shots, blocked attempts, and weird turnovers.
-Everyone else. Because this is a sloppy, stagnant game.

Sidenote: I heard someone talking about Ocean of Pearls at a video store the other day. Is that one of your films, QD?

Maxiell is working the little jumper tonight. Looks good!
by Garrett on Dec 9, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions
Maxiell is quietly having a nice, confident game. It’s good to see him shoot jumpers with conviction.
At this point, I’d rather have the ball in Ben’s hands than Jonas’. He’s like a free turnover.
by Zachatollah on Dec 9, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions
This is not JJ’s day on offense. It’s good that he’s still hustling and playing D though.
by Jim on Dec 9, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions
Very impressive D by Stuck. And hes running the team greeat right now.

1.) Chucky Atkins is outplaying Allen Iverson.
2.) Chucky had a choice between Baby-Eatin’ Max and Bobblehands on that break. Guess who got their shot blocked in a 2-hand fashion?
by Zachatollah on Dec 9, 2009 8:37 PM EST reply actions
And just to prove that he’s getting a feed of this thread in his left ear, JJ makes a nice cut to make me look foolish.

Wow, how did JJ finish that? Dalembert has had his number all game. I thought for sure he was going to eat that layup attempt.
by Garrett on Dec 9, 2009 8:40 PM EST reply actions
Stuckey is slowly improving his ability to run the pick and roll. Last year he just sprinted hard towards the hoop or picked up his dribble if the other team doubled hard. He’s actually showing some patience now and keeping his dribble alive..it’s good to see him mixing hit up.
by Jim on Dec 9, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

I like how the commentator was pretty certain Igoudala got bumped, and kept repeating it over and over. And the more they showed the replay (which was obvious he didn’t get bumped) he just sort of stopped talking.

Anytime our band of rejects (I say that in a loving manner) can get a grind it out win over a team with superior talent (granted, they suck) it is a good game in my book.
A lot of guys went out and played well beyond their expectations. They kept their composure down the stretch and pulled out the win. They may be sloppy at times, and yes, it was ugly, but you got to love the fight in this team.
Kwame got 11 and 5, Max got 12 and 5 and Jerebko 17 and 10. You HAVE to love that kind of game.

Kwame hit 7-8 FT, way to go KB. Great overall team effort from looking at the box score. I thought we were maybe a .500 team anyway before injuries. Now we’re almost at .500 without Tay and Rip. Loving this team so far. Q-ster gets a big thumbs up for teaching the boys how to fight no matter what.

Speaking of Q-Star, has anyone seen/heard/read any good interviews with him? I haven’t really been looking, but E-Double makes a good point — whatever Q-Star is doing, he needs to keep it up. Has he talked at all about his style or philosophy lately? What a difference a coach can make, huh? I wonder how he’s able to get these guys to go all out while Curry was able to get them to go the opposite of all out.

I must admit though, different cast of characters Garrett. AI and Sheed half-assing it could ruin any teams chemistry and overall hustle mentality. Glad their gone. Glad we got that ugly win since it will be considerably more difficult to beat Denver without Rip, Tay , BG and possibly MFWB.
by Colin on Dec 9, 2009 10:25 PM EST reply actions
OK, it was ugly all around; the Sixers look worse playing the game than reading their lineup card would indicate; lots of guys on Detroit made several really bad plays each; the lineups we’re using must be some of the worst 3-pt shooting lineups in the league; and we needed to get lucky on both our last offensive and last defensive possession.
But dang, we got key baskets from Chucky and Maxy; Stuckey had a really fine game; JJ got a double-double including 17 and 4 in the second half alone; Kwame was in double digits for points and was CLUTCH I say CLUTCH from the FT line; Ben W. was doing his thing (12 boards, 4 steals; we outrebounded them 45-32; we were without Ben G., Rip, and Tay, and Bynum was hurt and we still got a road win.
Nice to see the effort pay off, and Detroit deserves a couple of bounces going their way. Oh, and not that I’m a big +/- fan, but tied for the lead in that category for Detroit and for the game? Chucky and Big Ben.

“The Sixers were counting on Iverson’s marquee name to serve as a box office. They drew 20,000-plus in his homecoming Monday night, but attendance plummeted to 12,136 against the Pistons. That’s just a tick more than the 11,965 they averaged in their first eight home games.”

Didn’t see the game at all, but it seems that people grumble a bit much when the Pistons fall behind. Look, this is a team that was expected to maybe win between 35-45 games, was playing on the road, and is missing its two top scorers and an Olympian. You tell any of us at the beginning of the year that the Pistons would get a combined 11 points from Rip, BG, Tay, and Villanueva AND STILL WIN—ON THE ROAD (even against an awful team), and we would be incredulous at the very least.
Seems like a splendid win. Add three fringe all-stars to the mix (while keeping the spirit and cohesiveness thus far created) and this could be a really successful season.

I thought Stuckey played really well. From what I’ve seen in the past few games, I think he’s starting to turn the corner. The wave of injuries has given him a chance to prove that he can carry a team if need be. I had pretty good seats by the basket we played offense at in the 2nd half. E-Double:
Damn, harsh man. I guess watching practically every single game every year, obsessively reading DBB and every other pistons related blog/media, is all canceled out by a single, one sentence comment.
Also, not sure how you inferred that I was complaining about “style points,” when what I said was: [IMO] that was the worst we’ve played this season as a team and still won. Having watched every win this season except for the Atlanta game, I don’t think that’s such an outlandish statement to then be tarred as “obviously not a true fan.”
Colin: Thank you :)
Anyway, overall reaction from game:
Great: Stuckey. He tore up a terrific defender in Iguodala for most of the game. Played solid defense. Was calm and under control, rarely forced things that weren’t there. Made the game winning shot. And most importantly: Made AI eat polished hardwood with a nasty, super quick in/out crossover into a step back jumper. A delightful sequence.
Good: Max. Had the jumper working, which bailed out a couple iffy possessions. Sturdy defense, 2 assists, 0 turnovers, 0 PF’s. Probably should have been given more minutes.
Very Good: JJ in second half. Kwame in first half. JJ drew a shooting foul in the 3rd quarter, sank booth FT’s, and from then on he was a huge difference maker (after those FT’s, he shot 6/7 from the field the rest of the game). Kwame wasn’t perfect in the 1st half, but he was as close as he’ll ever be: Made his FT’s (6/6), 2/3 fga’s, grabbed 4 rebs in 11 mins.
Very Bad: JJ in first half. Kwame in second half. JJ was pretty crappy to start the game: 0/3, with 2 TO’s in the first quarter. And honestly, those numbers don’t do justice to how out-of-sorts he looked. The wheels came off the Kwame-train late in the 3rd after he bobbled what should have been an easy bucket and traveled. From then on, Kwame couldn’t regain his focus and struggled to grab defensive rebounds (had 0 def rebs in 6 mins between the 3rd and 4th) while I struggled not to curse loudly at my computer screen.
Random stat of the night: In 2 minutes and 19 seconds of playing time, The Wrong DaJuan almost managed to not dent the box score at all, but was called for a b.s. shooting foul when AI ran into him, then was immediately taken out of the game.
IMO, this game actually would have been a great spot to give Summers some minutes as part of a big line-up that would play exclusively zone. With jump shooters like AI and Willie Green, we should have been daring Philly to jack up some shots. IMO, a line-up of Stuck/Daye/Summers/CVorJJ/Ben could have been pretty effective tonight.

by Garrett on Dec 10, 2009 9:24 AM EST reply actions
Well, I was hoping for MFWB to deform AI’s ankles, but I’ll take Rodney doing it anyday!
Nice to see Stuck play well for a string of games now. Here’s hoping he’s turned the corner. His shooting numbers are up, he’s not forcing as much, and he’s finding a way to rack up the assists even without a lot of frontcourt scoring (Take the bait, MP ;) )
Random Rodney Stat of the Day:
I suspected that playing at SG was boosting his numbers. I was wrong. Over the course of the season, Rodney’s PER is drastically better at PG that at any other spot:
(per 48)
PG: 31.0
SG: 16.7
SF: 12.4
This seems to be true for D as well. When he’s matched up against PG, SG, or SF, his highest net production is when he’s at PG:
(net-PER per 48)
PG: +15.5
SG: +5.4
SF: -14.1 (Rodney may be a combo guard, but he sure as heck ain’t a SF).
CV seems to be in a little funk, albeit understandably after Ben’s hip pwned him, and MFWB still ain’t quite right. JJ with another nice double double, gotta get those TO’s down, and Big Ben controlling the paint without scoring a point.
Good win last night. If Rodney keeps playing this efficiently, we’re going to claw our way right back into the Playoffs. As Rodney goes, so go the Pistons?

Also, over the last 5 games Jerebko is averaging 12 and 8. Not bad for a rookie. Over those same 5 games, he is the second best rebounder from the SF spot in the entire league, and leads all rookies in RPG. I love a dude who can rebound.

@brgulker
That’s something a lot of people don’t take into consideration. While everyone is being asked to do more, Stuckey is the one being put in a bad position. Due to his size he has been the one asked to constantly play off position, so what was his advantage (size over PGs)suddenly is not. Bynum has been a PG playing PG, Chucky too, Gordon is a shooting guard playing SG and so on. But a portion of each games, all season long, Stuckey has been a point guard asked to play out of position to fill in.
by Kriz on Dec 10, 2009 10:04 AM EST reply actions
brgulker: Thank you :)
Waulie: +1. IMO, the new starting line-up (with Max and Chucky) is working decently in large part because JJ and Max actually make a solid, logical pairing at SF/PF. JJ helps cover for Max’s weakness on the defensive glass, and the two together make us a nightmare to keep off the offensive glass.
A center with a diverse offensive game, someone like Kaman (with JJ/Max at SF/PF), would make that a really dynamite frontcourt.
by Gabe on Dec 10, 2009 10:18 AM EST reply actions
When Tay and Rip get back to 100%, I wonder if Kuester will try starting JJ at PF. I’m sure he going to get playing time at PF since Tay and Rip will eat up about all the minutes at SF. I’m not sure how JJ will handle PF, but if he can hold his own defensively and continue to rebound and hit the occasional shot I would like him starting. We could have two potentially dangerous lineups.
Start:
Stuck
Rip
Tay
JJ
Wallace
Then, bring in Gordon and CV and slide Rip to SF. It could be explosive.

and he’s finding a way to rack up the assists even without a lot of frontcourt scoring
Only one of nine of Rodney’s assists came from the backcourt.

Just watched those ten minutes of highlights. It looks like (in a game in which he’d already had, what, two tripping fouls?) Iverson tries to give Stuckey a little shove when he’s going for his followup shot at the end of the game. Anyone else see that?

@ brgulker:
I watched all the preseason games that were televised. And, I completely agree with you. Of course, he didn’t look that great at SF the first few games, either.
That’s why I said I wasn’t sure how he would fair at PF. But, with an increasing lack of powerful PF playing in the NBA, I think he might be pretty effective.
I guess my main point is that Jerebko has earned playing time. He needs to stay in the rotation. The only way that is going to happen with the roster at full strength is for him to play almost exclusively at PF. I don’t see Rip and Gordon only playing 24 mpg, so clearly Rip will be spending significant time at SF effectively squeezing JJ out of the mix. Like it or not, I think Kuester is going to give Jerebko a huge chance to prove he can be effective at PF.
You didn’t sound condescending to me. I’m not that fragile.

How is it that Stuckey breaking Iverson’s ankles did not end up on any website/highlight package? That was easily the play of the game.

I stand corrected!

Long ass highlights package focused on the Pistons…20 seconds in they show the breaking of the ankles

The flip side to JJ playing at PF is that he starting to show consistency on his three point shot. That could open up some room. Plus, JJ has shown an ability to crash the boards from the outside.
I’m sure he can defend the position at least as good as Rashard Lewis can.

Oh and given the extremely depressing news of ticket sales, I’d say the chances are just as good that Kuester goes with Jerebko as the main backup at the 3 for Tay, and/or the other way around, and Gordon the backup at the 2…ultimately, I think we make a move to trade Rip or Tayshaun by the end of the season simply because of the amount of money invested in those two. I’d think that if Tay gets healthy again, given the development of Jerebko, and the potential of Daye, we could just as easily go without Tay at all and run Jerebko at starting 3 with Daye off the bench when Kuester isn’t running his crazy Bynum/Stuckey/Gordon lineup.

OT: This was in Charley Rosen’s analysis of the Timberwolves game last night:
Ryan Hollins can run and moves well without the ball, but his hands are bad. How bad? After he flubbed a relatively easy pass from Love, Kurt Rambis shouted out the following instruction to Love: “Next time throw the ball right at his (bleeping) nose!”
Methinks John Kuester would not say that about Kwame…

I’m guessing Joe D is definitely open to trading Rip or Tay due to the emergence of some of our young guys, but I also think he would prefer to first see how this team plays together when fully healthy.
I actually wouldn’t be surprised at all if we don’t make a big move before the trade deadline. Even if we make a trade now to help balance out our roster, we’re not going to be a championship caliber team this year. Eventually though the roster will need to be balanced out. Also, Tay will have the most value once this year is over since he’ll be in the last year of his contract.

Nice find. But doesn’t that hurt your case? If Rodney’s assists are contingent on frontcourt scoring, then what are the past few games all about?
@ Waulie:
My hunch would be that the only way JJ works at the 4 consistently is if Big Ben is at the 5 to help absorb some of JJ’s interior softness. Of course, against some teams, that won’t be a problem. But regardless of what I think, it’s probably safe to say that JJ’s going to see some time at the 4.
