Antonio McDyess still plans on returning
From Chris McCosky:
"I really haven't thought about (this summer), not at all, really," he said. "I know teams are struggling for money and all kinds of things are going on with the economy."
McDyess said all he's looking for is one, maybe two more years.
"I am not looking for anything longer than that," he said.
And the Pistons are still his first option.
"Yeah, from Day One that's been my thought and I haven't changed," he said. "It's not going well this year, but I know eventually it's going to get better. I know with Joe (Dumars, president), it can't stay like this for long."
He'll be a restricted free agent this summer, and just like earlier this season, he'll have no shortage of suitors. As a fan of the team, I certainly hope he finishes his career in Detroit -- but as a fan of the man, I'd urge him to strongly consider all of his options.
There's not a player on this roster who plays with more heart and urgency than he does every single night, and I wouldn't begrudge him in the least if he let himself be wooed by a team like the Spurs or Cavs. (Just not the Celtics, Dyess, I'm begging you!) In my entire history supporting this team, I'm not sure I ever felt that way about another player, but the guy deserves a ring, plain and simple.

I hope he comes back. My favorite Pistons player next to Roscoe.

What a trooper. And what a refreshing example of an athlete who puts team before self. He sure does stand in contrast to all the negative publicity we hear about guys like TO and Manny.
I sincerely hope #24 is hanging in the rafters someday to pay tribute to a player who lays it all on the line every night.

I went to high school with Biddy as we say in Quitman, MS. This is a guy who plays basketball. He is a player that has always put the team before himself. The coaches need the realize how effective he really is and get him some touches. The production speaks for itself. 53 rebounds over a three game span. Biddy is still a 15 pts & 10 rebound guy in the NBA.

Yep, that’s one Jersey you have at least 24 reasons to go cop.
’Dyress FTW

I agree. I always want the Pistons to do well, but for him I want them to win a championship.

Dyess is without a doubt my favorite piston. I wish him success no matter where he ends up(expect for cleveland, i can’t stomach the thought of him finishing his career with varejao the flopper)

@colin – sadly i feel the same way too.
In times where stars move to where the money is plentyfull and the chances of a ring are maximal, seeing him loyal to a struggling team who have already traded him (maybe knowing in advance they’d be able to re-sign him) in order to get some $$$ freed up in 2010 makes me feel like shit

what McCosky didn’t mention was that during that interview McDyess helped 4 old ladies cross the street and he was able to reach items in the grocery store for people that were too high for them to get.

Antonio McDyess cleaned out your gutters for spring.

It’s great to see how much McDyess wants to bring a championship back to Detroit. Hopefully, if it doesn’t happen, he’ll look back in fondness at the accomplishments that he did have. He played great in that Spurs series.
And he really seemed to be enjoying himself during that one game where he had a great first half and Stuart Scott interviewed him on his way off the court.

Matt Watson and coachDP win again.
Love McDyess, but unless the unlikely happens next year and we suddenly become awesome again, I wouldn’t mind seeing him win one with San Antonio or Orlando (my least hated among the top 5 – NO Boston, Cleveland, or LA, please ’Dyess).
And I agree that Antonio McDyess does make me feel strangely guilty and ashamed for rooting for this team. An odd reaction.

What ever he decides to do this summer will be ok with me. If he re-signs with us I hope we are able to put some good talent around him through FA’s or trades. I’d hate to see him playing his heart out again for a .500 ball club.

Whether he’ stays or goes I hope the best for him , he deserves a championship. But I think he’ll stay outa loyalty to Joe , who brought him in when most of the other teams were afraid of his knee’s.Smart decision.

I’m betting that if we ran the season’s individual statistics, we would find that Dyess has been one of the most efficient and most productive players on our roster.
We would also see that he’s making a lot less than others, who may not have been as productive.
In short, he’s probably the most underpayed player, given his level of productivity, on almost any roster in the league.

edit: “One of the most underpayed…”
Not the most.

@brgulker:
Well, there’s this, which shows Dyess’ seasonal production against the opponent and his on/off court production (where he is the worst starter):

His seasonal +/- (and win percentage) (where he is the worst on the roster behind sharpe):

In spite of his post-injury renaissance, it appears that his effort hasn’t been very successful in terms of wins. Take all of the above with a grain of salt— I love the guy, but was surprised to see those stats. His individual numbers, for his age and health, are pretty unreal.

Yeah, nothing new to say here. If a role player ever deserved to have his jersey retired, it’s McDyess. I actually think it’s kind of weird how attached we all are to him. I was CRUSHED when I found out he was part of the Billups trade, and felt only slightly better when it was clear he was going to get bought out and come back home. I’ve been trying to figure out what Pistons jersey to buy ever since Ben left, I think I’ve settled on 24.
