Joe Dumars on team building
Joe Dumars to SI's Ian Thomsen:"We're not going to change our model in order to lay the success or failure on one superstar,'' Dumars said. "We're going to continue the model that we've had here and that has worked for a long time. We will always try to build one of the deepest teams in the NBA, which is what we've done over the years. I'm not averse to a star. But it has got to be a star who can flourish in this type of environment, this type of culture that we've become accustomed to here.''

Then, gee, this was a stupid way to clear cap space, Joe. Either that, or you have no clue what a ‘NBA star’ is.

In Joe D We Trust. If only he was coach he would have no one to blame but himself…

Hey Sauce, this makes total sense. Dumars took a risk with Iverson, to change things up a little, but he mainly wanted to see the future being built slowly, without having to hit rock bottom first. Now that we have seen that a star like AI cannot fit into this system, it makes sense that he says he wont change the model. I agree with him. There are plenty of stars out there who can play well with others, and do not have to dribble around in circles to do so.

Man I am extremely disappointed in the way you guys have handled your star players. When Rip was hurt Iverson was on and you were winning against LA, and Boston with all there stars present. Then all of a sudden he goes to the bench, then you do the same to Iverson. It will only come back to haunt you D. I am sure you never had to deal with that for one reason. Its called loyalty. Its important to building a strong team. By the way we still don’t know what it would look like to start your best five players (Iverson, Hamilton, Sheed, Prince, and Dice) because your coach was not smart enough to experiment with that. Maybe Phil Jackson such run some clinics for Curry before he is ready to coach in the big leagues. He won three with no point guard…
FYI wins in Denver and Boston with KG and Melo on the sidelines are not worthy of any applause unless you win by at least 30

Allen was the worst trade and decision since picking Darko over Dwane wade and Carmelo Anthony. Allen success relies on a desperate team relying completely on his performance game to game dropping 30 points because he shoots every time he gets the ball. The low percentage shots are ruining the dynasty of Pistons basketball. There was a fundamental understanding, with Chauncey on the team, of taking your time to get a good percentage shot, not forced, and making he other team force a shot with tough defense. Allen is not all he’s hiped up to be. The pistons are a sharing team that looks for open shots and that is why all the starting line-up averaged around 15 pts. each. Consistantly dropping pionts not up and down on a roller coaster of 5 points then 30.

I still think we should have traded Sheed’s contract for young talent and kept CB/Rip/Tay to build around.
But, hindsight is 20/20.

I would’ve traded rip b4 extension, and built around cb/stuck/tay. But, hindsight ist 20/20

Apparently, you JoeD haters have never heard of this thing called cap space. Yes, the guy has had some misfires. But, Detroit will have the second most cap space of any team in the league in a buyer’s market. Plus, he has a 4mil expiring contract in Kwame to play with. And 7 draft picks these next two years.
Losing Chauncey sucks, but anyone can see the Sheed is done as an elite big man. You can’t have the luxury of Chuancey AND Stuckey if it means you’re weak in the middle.

I cosign everything QD said.
Additionally, I find it hilarious that Mr. Clowney says we beat Boston (never happened with AI) and that Rip was on when Rip was out, but then says beating Denver and Boston sans Melo and KG is nothing unless you win by thirty. I’ll be the first to admit that our current 3 game streak isn’t that impressive unless you consider that we lost 8 in a row first. Still more impressive (imo) then what we did w/o Rip:
We beat the:
Bucks
Magic
Nets
Kings
Clippers (by 1)
And Nuggets (by 3) – WITHOUT CARMELO – jeez, think before you type.
We lost to:
Portland
Utah
So, there’s no guarantee that we’ll keep winning without AI, but I like our current stretch alot better than what we did w/o Rip.
