Pistons-Cave Game Three Thread

Enough bagging on Tayshaun Prince. The dude has to guard LeBron on behalf a team that is no longer defense-oriented, and for a team that has no coach.

Prediction for tonight:

Pistons by 7 - Prince Scores 26

I think I’m done watching this series and coming here during it.

If by miracle Detroit wins this series, you clowns can consider me leaving a good luck charm.

Let the funeral march continue… oh and let the constant negativity continue to flow about any of the players who don’t put up Lebron-esque numbers on a nightly basis… I forgot, that’s why Detroit became successful in the first place.

How easily you all have forgotten… I’ll be back around with the bandwagon when the team comes back to winning to pick you clowns up.

This time around I do not have the option of flipping to the Red Wings when things go south (which is usually very early anyway). As long as Curry puts in players that want to play I will watch the whole thing, even if they get blown out.

It will be interesting to see who sticks around this blog now that Detroit is officially Not Very Good. I will, although I’m not saying it’s a virtue. Although I’ll probably miss the first part of this game. . . .

“oh and let the constant negativity continue to flow about any of the players who don’t put up Lebron-esque numbers on a nightly basis…”

I don’t think it’s that certain players aren’t putting up “Lebron-esque” numbers so much as certain players not putting up “deserves to be starting for an NBA team” numbers, while consequently starting for an NBA team.

And I’ll watch this game about as long as I watched the first two, which means I won’t watch. Losses are best viewed in 30-second spurts on SportsCenter.

Go Pistons!

by Keegan on Apr 24, 2009 5:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m as realistic as the next person, although I do have my blind homer moments.

I realize that Detroit needs 2 front court players who can come in and make an impact this offseason. I realize that our small forward is struggling right now.

I realize that more than just Rasheed and Dyess could be gone… we could be looking at no more Herrmann (FA), Kwame (Opt out), etc.. there could be as many as 5-6 spots to fill… think about that, half a freaking team. You think Herrmann wants to come back after playing well at the beginning of the season, sitting a bunch, and then playing at the end of the season? You think Kwame wants to be buried on the bench, starting, and then buried again?

I honestly wish Detroit wouldn’t have traded Billups, risked letting Rip opt out and let him go and then started Billups and Stuckey next season. Trade Tay in the offseason if necessary, start Afflalo at 3 to be our Bowen and then work on the front court…

that’s enough youth injection into the team… All this doesn’t mean I wanted Rip gone instead of AI but, had I had a do-over, I think I risk Hamilton opting out and if he doesn’t? You go into next season with Tay and Rip being expirings… imagine that.

by Boney on Apr 24, 2009 5:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m sorry, Tay isn’t expiring until ‘10-’11… still doesn’t change my stance

by Boney on Apr 24, 2009 5:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think most of the negativity is more so pointed at their lack of passion for the game. It’s like none of them want to even play. They play with no passion, they don’t even talk about the game with passion. It’s about as passionate as Al Gore’s public speaking.

by wolf blitzer on Apr 24, 2009 5:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Boney, but the blind homer in me says we’ll be fine. It may be that same side of me that says this will be what’s best for us in the end (so long as MC is gone). I’d rather have Stuckey playing in his natural position, Rip and Tay, a 20-10 big man courtesy of our cap space, and a second big man to be named later – whether it’s Dyess, Sheed, Max, Kwame, Amir, or someone outside of the organization. I’m very happy with that starting five and really am not worried about our what our talent level will be heading into next season.

The way I see it, right now we’re the exact same team as last season only having received nothing in exchange for Chauncey and a huge downgrade from Flip. It’s no wonder the Cavs are better than us considering that. If next November they decide to trade Mo Williams for someone who doesn’t want to play for them and fire Mike Brown in favor of an idiot, they’re probably not going to win over 50 games.

This season blows, but we’ll be back. So long as they fire Curry.

*That’s not to say MC will always be AFI – just that there are absolutely better, more proven options out there.

i think a lot of the frustration is feeling that many of the losses were games that could have/ should have been won.
anyhow lebron is going to stomp on some other fools soon enough. we were just the first in line at the altar.

More importantly when can we discuss who we take in the draft. From the short research I’ve done,

I like Craig Brackins…6’10" PF with range and some pretty good moves around the basket. Needs to put on some weight/muscle but he’s extremely long and if you watch the highlight reel (http://www.nbadraft.net/players/craig-brackins), you can see that his release is very high similar to Sheeds release meaning even if it takes him a season or two to put on weight, his turn-around jumper could still be effective. Best part is, he’s not undersized at PF. I haven’t seen much of him play this past season so I’m interested to know what other people’s opinions are of him.

I also like BJ Mullens out of Utah http://www.nbadraft.net/players/bj-mullens

Hell yeah!! Mo Williams is a punk ass bitch. He’s the type to talk a lot of smack only when he’s with someone big. If Tay whined about not being on the all star team as much as he did, Tay would of been on the all star team every year.

I love how we are playing with some energy and effort plus MC is actually making good substitutions. Let’s hope we keep this up!!!!

Fucking horseshit. How do the refs miss an obvious and-1, after the ball hit the back board on Stuckey’s drive, and then follow that up with two phantom fouls on Rip.

The NBA, where horrible calls happen.

We have gotten decently screwed the last couple minutes. The refs have masterfully called a handful of non-shooting fouls on Cleveland to keep the overall foul differential within reason, but we are getting absolutely ZERO calls when we go to hole.

it frustrates the hell out of me that he has not had more of a chance and i don’t see why not considering the rest of the bigs have some really sucky aspects. sheed …whatever. kwame no hands and sometimes enforcer sometimes matador. maxiel..i lost whatever shot i had. only consistent big is dyess who is way overtaxed and not able to drive to the hole.

SadPanda: No problem. Obviously Kwame could opt out, but I imagine he’ll get 20 or so minutes/game next year if he sticks around no matter what additions we make to the roster. If he adds to his resume another season of playing like he has for us lately, he probably makes himself a lot more money over the longhaul than if he opts out this summer.

by Garrett on Apr 24, 2009 8:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

that is the thing about curry i can honestly say i would have done better despite my general basketball x and o ignorance. in this game it was obvious that he should play the bench. it was obvious that jump shooting would not be enough. so either go to the hoop or take threes. it was obvious that wrap up fouls should be practiced. if pinky fouls will be called, you have to respond. if you are going to be called for them anyway. curry is stubborn and dense. he has managed to further devalue tay and sheed in this postseason. talk about turning lemons into poop.

And we all knew this would happen eventually – let’s just hope they’re able to rebuild in the next couple years. Wow is this ever depressing. I equate this to what it must be like with an old dog being put to sleep. You want to be there with it, but at the same time who wants to see this?

Ahh but for the exception of my beloved Sheed who just needs to go. Still upset with you about Game 6 agst Boston last year (I’m not sure you could go much lower than that, unless you want to go back to the prv yr of being kicked out and I believe susp for the next game if there had been one)and you have pretty much plateaued at that level. When Sideshow Bob is making you look like Sideshow Bob, things have spiraled out of control.

I do think this isn’t as upsetting as it had been the past few years. As much as it shocked me to hear thoughtful analysis from an ESPN employee, the Chris Broussard column linked by Gabe earlier…
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2009/columns/story?columnist=broussard_chris&page=Pistons-090424 I think is right on pt, spc re where JoeD would have been after this yr w/Billups. This team has looked lost since the trade but this was a group that put on a maddening dispaly of basketball to end each of the last three years WITH Chauncey, who has that chip back which is when he is at his best. I’m not yelling at the television as much this yr but it’s harder to look at.

But this is why I think if you can’t get Bosh in a trade, you go after Boozer hard. You have to have some type of post threat. A jump shooting team that can’t get out in transition because they don’t have a shot blk, can’t win in the playoffs. Boozer impressed the shit out of me last night and continued to do so w his post game interview. Get the Kander on the case and the DP’s can get a guy entering the prime of his career who is a beast when healthy.

Good for Philly. Orl may have the highest combination score of whiny announcers, complaining players and bitching coach (not even taking into account that this team is based out of Orlando, FLORIDA). I liked JVG’s comments that SVG’s mock tees were shaming the family, but I’ll take that one step farther, they are a black mark on the male gender and if I could speak for women I would have said the whole human race. Please give us a Chicago-Philly ECS. But David Stern gets weak in the knees every time he thinks of Lebron going through DWade, Howard and Kobe.

And I agree about the Lebron bitching. Give it a rest after the 1 out of every 12 calls you don’t get. I like Lebron’s personality better off the court (not as fake) and his game on the court compared head-to-head w Kobe but I think I would root for LA over Cle bc I don’t want to see the Cavs fans happy and the b&m marathon by Lebron is tiring.

Not a good start to the weekend with this, the Tigers losing and teh Lions apparently resigned to drafting Stafford (have they learned NOTHING?), but this was cathartic.

You know what cathartic means Mike?

Wow, this detroit team is horrible.. what happened to the def.. I mean everything.. when Cleveland backcourt combined for 4 points(!!!), 10 rebounds,9 assists, and 8(!) turnovers in 70+ minutes and we still can’t win. King Crab also missed all 5 of his 3 pointers to boot..

Btw barely any pistons took it to the hoop, does some of you really think they deserved the freethrows? I don’t think so.

I haven’t read the game thread yet. I went out in Philly with my Detroit transplant buddies, we watched the game at the bar. I don’t know what the announcers were saying, but I thought that Rodney Stuckey was our best player by far tonight. I thought he was terrific on LeBron and we were absolutely incensed that he sat for the first half of the 4th in a close game. I understand giving him a quick breather, but WTF Curry? It’s hard to get too worked up about it because it’s apparent that they’re better than us, but we could have won that game and I didn’t understand the rotation in the 4th. This is frustrating.

“LBJ is like Michael Jordan, only a LOT lamer.
There is something about LBJ that is not badass.
MJ was badass. LeBron is amazing, but cute and cuddly amazing.”

The Pistons need to hit him like they did with Jordan coming into the lane. That should be the only similarity between LeBurger “King” James and MJ.

If I was on the Pistons, I’d risk suspension for a hard Barkley style foul for him coming in the lane. You think the original Bad Boys like Mahorn would let LeBron just waltz down the lane and dunk?

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Does anyone come to mind? (hint: think substitutions)

I don’t understand since we are losing our ass, why doesn’t MC play Amir on Z? Amir is too quick for him and if Z tries to post him up or go around him, Amir can hit him really hard!

Chris Paul said "We have to make life more difficult for him, make him play under a little more duress,‘’ West said. "He does too good a job of getting his team into what needs to be run. He won’t allow them to take bad shots. He’s controlling that team over there. He doesn’t allow them to get out of sorts. He doesn’t allow them to get out of control. He has them in control from start to finish.

“He can dominate the game. He is pretty tough to deal with.’’

At his point, it’s starting to seem like Dumars’ “greatness” came in the hiring of Billups. And he didn’t even understand what he had. None of us did. The Pistons are in more trouble than 20 million dollars can solve. No passion, no leader, no coach, no size, no chemistry; long days ahead.

Blah. I’m tired of reading all the Billups stuff. He had a great run here, but he tanked the last few years. He would not have performed at the level he is right now with our Pistons as currently constructed. He needed the change of scenery to revive his career, and now he’s playing like he did in 2004 when he was the man. We knew what we had from 2004-2006 but then he kind of tapered off. Maybe we didn’t fully appreciate him until he was gone, but Dumars had to do SOMETHING because we weren’t getting it done. The end.

Also, what happened to Curry’s whole accountability thing? In game 2, Sheed, Dyess, Tay, and Rip SUCKED. But he played them 30, 37, 33, and 41 minutes respectively. Tay could barely move out there! And yet he got more burn than Amir, Max, and Herrmann combined (who were part of the huge run in game 2). Curry Fury, activate (again)!

king crab…that is funny.
so the comment thread is once again full of questions about refs and michael curry. but the announcers have nothing to say on either matter. the announcing is frustrating because it is censored. it isn’t candid.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Apr 25, 2009 8:20 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

garret, curry is stubborn, dense, inconsistent, incoherent…predictable yet he still manages to introduce a new rotation at least once a game. which must be a mathematical feat. i am seriously thinking i would be a better coach. the overall approach to the crisis?dilemma of this series has been sorely lacking. not only will they lose in four, but two games will be low in attendance, we will be frustrated, and get this…sheed and tay and amir even further devalued.
he could have had fun. he could have fouled with a purpose. he could have forced foul calls on offense. he could have shot threes rather than long twos. he could have played fabio. he could have played amir. who in his minimal minutes is one of the only post defenders to actually wrap up lebro.
but he didn’t. he just furthered devalued the personnel. making all the dream trades even more dream like.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Apr 25, 2009 8:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

so what is better? a low pct. 2 or a low pct. 3? if you are not going to hit a shot for several possessions, don’t you at least want a three when you do? yet i recall very few attempts. maybe one or two for sheed, fabio, and affalo. let them shoot for chrissakes. what is to lose?

by andyfrombrooklyn on Apr 25, 2009 8:32 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

you are playing against the leagues chosen one. despite his physicality, you can not touch him with your pinkie without getting called for the foul. plus he is very good and manages to score at a very high pct. you will be in the penalty early anyway. so wrap the guy up. is this strategy complicated? no.it is obvious. plus it gets people like varejao crazy and he might just get teched. which could be used to your advantage if you deliberately trap him into the psyche out. let the other guy get teched for once.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Apr 25, 2009 8:37 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

when not shooting threes, send people to the hole and force the call. of course this strategy only works if the refs have a common standard for what is a foul. so it must be abandoned when the fix sets in.

by andyfrombrooklyn on Apr 25, 2009 8:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

and actually i think curry tried to get fouled. the refs just didn’t call many. i remember both tay and sheed getting mauled a couple times. what can you do? take threes and wrap up on defense.

james got pinkied foul but the mauling of tay was just good basketball. better to be out of the playoffs than to play the stiff for david stern.

This quote sums it up folks. Which would you rather have? A first round exit giving our younger guys an extra month of off court development or an ECF exit sucking everything out of our players on an annual basis.

Every single game is at ADTHE. Book Mark.

Since the LakeShow have inherited the on-off switch from us, I’m thinking Denver actually has a reasonably shot at getting to the finals.

I know it’s a grey area, but Chris Paul just barreled into the Anthony Carter and the refs called a blocking foul. When is it a charge? Paul had no where to go, and was going 100 mph with his head down, while Carter is just trying to stay in front and move backwards with Paul. It was a collision initiated by the offense. Why can’t we do that to Delonte West or Mo Williams or even LeBron?

Tyson Chandler is over-rated?

by Garrett on Apr 25, 2009 2:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Garrett: I think Tyson Chandler is playing super wounded. I feel like in all 3 games I’ve seen him be reticent to jump for rebounds. I dunno that he’s overrated or what his “rating” even is, but I refuse to believe Tyson Chandler is anywhere close to 100% out there physically. On top of that, I don’t think he’s trying to push himself out there either. He looks really uncomfortable to me.

Man….did you guys saw Kanyon Martin? Looks like he’s going to kill everybody on the team. He just sits there as his teammates are leaving the court to the locker room. Great game though.

Sheed is a lazy bum who doesn’t care about playing hard.

The cancer known as Sheed has slowly spread throughout the team.

by ripcityblack on Apr 25, 2009 5:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Tyson Chandler is a solid option on defense, and could a need Detroit has in the middle. Outside of that, he’s limited offensively and he’s extremely foul prone.

If we were to acquire him, it’d be a nice change of pace to have a big man who doesn’t leave the paint but we need to have a solid option off the bench because Tyson is going to spend some time sitting with foul trouble.

Anyone watching Lakers/Jazz? If the Cavs make it to the finals against the Lakers, I think the refs’ heads will explode. Either that, or every player will foul out by the second quarter and the final half will be a one-on-one game of Kobe vs. LeBron. LA is getting away with murder, and you KNOW LeBron would get those calls.

I think Ariza could be a good pick for the sf, but outside of getting Bosh i don’t see another 4/5 that is worth paying over 14 mil for.

by Thogg on Apr 26, 2009 12:04 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

For what it’s (unrelatedly) worth, I think Stafford was a bad pick for the Lions. It’s a bad year for quarterbacks; they should have taken Aaron Curry or one of the offensive tackles.

Incidentally, I am a big Vikings fan and I am pissed that they drafted injury-prone, unpolished, suspected pothead Percy Harvin when Michael Oher was available. Ugh.
