Allen Iverson is done for the season

It's official:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars announced today that guard Allen Iverson will miss the remainder of the season. The all-star guard missed 16 games between February 27 and March 28 after exiting a game at New Orleans with a sore back on February 25.

"After talking with Allen and our medical staff, we feel that resting Allen for the remainder of the season is the best course of action at this time," said Dumars. "While he has played in our last three games, he is still feeling some discomfort and getting him physically ready to compete at the level he is accustomed to playing this late in the season does not seem possible at this point."

Can something be the most predictable thing in the world and yet still surprising? Given AI's pride and his likely refusal to accept a supporting role for peanuts this summer, we may have already seen his last game in the NBA.

I bet AI goes to Europe or abroad next year. I bet $20 Million! He would steal the show anywhere in the world but the NBA and he’s popular enough worldwide that someplace like China would probably drop a fuffillion dollars to land him. I can’t imagine any team that would be blowing his phone up atm.

YESSSSSS!

this is like the best news all season.

Wow. I’m actually glad that Joe isn’t calling him out. It’s a much classier way of doing things.

by Quick Darshan on Apr 3, 2009 4:31 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

LMAO!!! I knew AI was selfish, but wow…I thought he was smart enough not to do this to his image. He loves the limelight. Guess he can show his lime oversea’s. Or for a bottow dwelling NBA Team. And I agree if i was Joe D…I would of just said. Due to AI’s Pride, he will no longer be logging any minutes the rest of the Year as a Detroit Piston. and Diablo. That’s gonna be " Coating " Sugar Coating. Smile.

by PistonsFan40 on Apr 3, 2009 4:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve long said that the woes of this season were not all, or even really mostly, AI’s fault. Having said that, has a big-name acquisition ever worked out WORSE for an NBA team than this? When an established star came to a good team? I mean, I used to think Detroit getting Sean Elliot turned out to be shockingly bad.

The silver lining, of course, is this was never only about this year, and probably wasn’t even mostly about this year.

by Toledo Joe on Apr 3, 2009 4:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow. I’m a lot more shocked than I probably should be. It’s amazing how clearly AI’s true colors have shone through the last couple days. I could see how reasonable people could defend him for being frustrated and saying some stupid things a few days ago, but that just isn’t possible anymore- he’s a quitter and a completely selfish idiot.

by Gabe on Apr 3, 2009 4:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is there another level to the silver lining? Someone’s going to offer AI a starting job next year, and while it may not be above the MLE, it’s still money that can’t be thrown at Boozer/Chandler/Whoever.

by CTown on Apr 3, 2009 4:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

So, who out there can we quickly sign for the playoff roster? Anyone in the D-League? White Chocolate? And to think the Thunder just signed Livingston. Day late, dollar short there.

You gotta believe AI isn’t showing his face the rest of the season, and if he’s outta shape now, needs the rest for his back, don’t see how he can be on the playoff roster.

I also find it interesting that Joe D. is doing this and not MC. Would Mitch Kupchak and not PJ make this kind of announcement? Buford / Pop? Walsh / D’Antoni?

I can see MC now. “Man, this is going to change my rotations again!!”

by MarkButter in SoCal on Apr 3, 2009 4:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Gabe, I have no problem with him being upset about coming off the bench and I don’t think you do either. But, as you pointed out, if he had said, “I feel like I can help my team most, by playing starter’s minutes” this wouldn’t be a problem.

Instead, he talked about how it hurt him mentally and so on. All of his quotes are about him.

I used to really like the guy and respect how he played. And I really thought he’d fit in here. I thought he was unfairly maligned on this site. But, I was wrong. What a douche.

by jay uno on Apr 3, 2009 4:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i was a huge fan of ai’s game before this year. I now chalk that up to not living in a city where he played. I loved his quickness and his “heart” and how he played relentlessly every game, throwing his body around the court and taking a lot of punishment for a guy his size. Now i just see that he is a lil bratty whiner who doesn’t give a damn about winning and only wants to prove that he still is the “man”. Iverson is oblivious to fact that he has had a terrible year, whether you want to blame the pistons style or his eroding skills, and that he is quickly becoming an old man without that great first step. I was happy when he came here, now i can’t wait for him to back his bags and become the star of the Prague Panthers or the Hungarian Hornets.

by dandresden on Apr 3, 2009 4:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You know what I don’t understand? How can a guy like Iverson, clearly the epitome of the Me-first mentality, actually have legitimately loyal fans? How can they not see how he systematically destroys teams? Surely they can’t believe that the ability to break down a defense cancels out his ability to break down a locker room, can they? I just don’t get it. What’s so likable about Allen Iverson?

by Gogol on Apr 3, 2009 5:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@Quick Darshan:
Completely agree. It’s funny how transparent AI is about the fact that he could not care less about his teammates. Also, he basically admitted that he’s completely healthy after complaining about just getting 18 minutes of PT, what a wimp to let Joe make an excuse for him so he doesn’t have to come off the bench for as few as 7 more games.

by Gabe on Apr 3, 2009 5:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The best part of a bad season will be no more Jumbotron pics of AI. And as a bonuse, watching him whine about not receiving more than an MLE offer this summer.

And don’t the Euor leagues have something about having only a specific number of American players on their roster?

It’ll be interesting to see how we close out the regular season after this.

by Jim on Apr 3, 2009 5:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

In order to regain his status, Allen will have to either say, “I was wrong, and I know this now” (regardless of truth), or … he’ll have to scapegoat the Pistons.

If he does the latter, expect him to permanently retire. Joe Dumars did him a favor by failing to smoke his pathetic ass in the press. If AI bites that hand, then he should expect all the inner-bullshit to get aired … and he’ll go from poisonous to radioactive.

I’m not expecting to hear the last of Allen, in relation to Pistons news.

What’s the point of this comment? This thread isn’t about us being better off without him. IMO, it’s about him being a big douche. Do you disagree, or do you just want to restart the argument about why we suck? In terms of wins and losses, we didn’t play better w/o him. “I hurt my back. . . so I didn’t play. . . much.. . In fact, I really wasn’t on the playoff roster, but we wouldn’t have been in the playoffs without me. But you should have seen me in the 01 Finals. . . "

I’m not saying Dumars intentionally did it today, but what would it have to hurt to have him for one more game, POSSIBLY his last NBA game in Philadelphia, the one I just bought a ton of tickets to. What would have one more game have hurt? They can beat Philly with AI anyway. They did about a week ago. Words can’t express how upset I am right now….

Sorry, brother. That’s a line o’ BS. AI didn’t play well, and then whined about being benched. THAT was the determinant in your not seeing him in Philly, not Joe D’s moves.

I’m actually surprised by this, even though it really should have happened long ago. Has this ever happened in the history of the league before? It seems pretty unprecedented that a team would shut down a future hall of famer like AI. Talk about cajones. by Rob G on Apr 3, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

People will celebrate this. But they’re idiots for doing so.

Basically Joe Dumars has designed this team in a way that no superstar can really come and play for this team and be the first option. Granted AI was in the decline and he did have the stigma of being a ballhog, but if you really looked at the season and the games, he did adhere to his teammates and really didnt get the adequate playing in key streches thanks to MCIAFI. On top of that there just seem to be a willingness by the core to help AI (Because they cant quit Chauncey like the Brokeback boys). You also have to question Dumars’wisdom to pull this trade during the first week of he regular season after training camp rather than in the offseason. It was alway a suprising trade that I dont think the Pistons every recovered from dealing with the unexpected shock. You cannot elimante a franchise player in Billups at the start of the season and expect the tram to b comfortable with it.

As far as the back and forth in recent days? Well its suprised me a lot at how blown out of proportion it has become. Easily the worse PR/miscommunication between player, team and press since Penny Hardaway and the Orlando Magic in 1999.

I wonder though, given AI’s popularity and respect amongst his fellow players in the league (and he does have plenty) will any big time player even want to come to the Pistons in 2010 as a free agent? Probably not. Given the depressing area the D has become and the Pistons tendancy to play a style that’s been given the perception of being the “most boring brand of basketball” that only sometimes wins championships (once in 6 ecf trips with 3 coaches), would anyone want to come?

And what of AI? My guess is he will have to understand his best days are behind him and he’s taking a major cut. But at the same time I think any situation will be better for him than Detroit. Being an acquisition after training camp and the team’s refusal to work him in(or the coach’s incapability), I think joining a team in the offseason thats expecting him and wants him will work much better than just being salary cap filler for a year on the Pistons. Best of luck to AI wherever he lands, ultimatlely its sad for both parties how badly this dindt work out depsite these two needing a rejuvination.

Well I’m happy to close this chapter. But I will still remember AI’s overall nba career fondly. A lot of consensus hall of famers are arrogant. Hell, rip publicly bitched about sitting and then told the media he was done with it. Just b/c we agreed with rip that he should be starting doesn’t mean that wasn’t also a very selfish thing to say.

I’m not saying AI doesn’t deserve some heat – this is weak sauce. But I guess I’m just not that shocked and don’t view him that differently than I do many other “superstars” in the league (who I expect would react similarly.)

I don’t have a link to that thread. But petey’s chastising us for wishing billups well, even against detroit, will go down as perhaps the most hilariously hypocritical thing I’ve read here.

Like I said, in these economic times dont expect a lot of GM’s to throw the kinda money that those players got (who arent all the best examples of free agency when you think about it) especially Joe Dumars. I can see him spending a lot of money on various ensemble pieces but it would be pretty depressing if he breaks the bank on Chris “Rupaul” Bosh. I wonder what will happen with that, cause the Raps have a nice team on paper that havent got it done this season, a lot depends on what happens next year.

@Forty-

If you’re going through Petey withdrawal, don’t worry, here’s a thread that will bring all the awesome memories back:

http://matthewyglesias.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/05/what_will_petey_do.php

:) I’ll quote one good example of how much the people on that site hated him:

“The answer is obvious to anyone who has paid attention to Petey; when his trolling no longer becomes tenable, he apes some half hearted rational for his months long trolljob, basically acknowledges that everything he wrote for the past few months was insincere, and says hey, let bygones be bygones
…then looks for a new angle for trolling.
Shockingly, that’s exactly what happened. The schadenfreude is enjoyable, but it’s flabbergasting that so many people don’t understand what a troll is.”

By the by, Jamal Mashburn just made an ass out of himself blaming the Pistons for having the audacity to play a hall of famer only 18 minutes. Ridiculous that a basketball team bringing a player back from a putative injury would ease him back into the flow. I mean, the nerve of some people who expect a professional athlete to do what his coach instructs him to do.

I don’t disagree that Bosh might have a few options higher on his list than playing in Detroit. But come on, he’s completely nasty. He has been a 20 and 10ish guy for years 3-6 of his NBA career, with 50ish% shooting. He gets to the line a ton and is one of the best driving 4’s in the game. And he’s just entering his early prime at 25, providing assurance that you’re getting what you pay for over the life of his next deal.

I grant you he’s not an amazing interior presence. But an average defender at his position with that type of offense is ridiculous value over a replacement player.

And those are all lovley stats for a young man who has only been to the playoffs only twice and lost in the first round each time as a franchise player for the Raps. But I dont know if I want to build the team around him. With that vet minimum, we’re going to sign a commenter that does more than mess up team chemistry (by doing nothing more than whining about how bad stuckey, bynum, amir, and herrmann are). Or, we’ll combine that with the two big expiring contracts (petey and david stern) for a star commenter to get us over the hump.

It’s easy to sum it up if you’re just talking about playing. We’re sitting here, and I’m supposed to be the franchise player, and we’re talking about playing. I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about playing, not an afterparty in Atlanta, not a trip to a Georgetown doctor, not even practice, but we’re talking about playing. Not the back that I go out there and tweak slightly and hobble around like the game I’m in is my last but we’re talking about playing man. How silly is that? … Now I know that I’m supposed to lead by example and all that but I’m not shoving that aside like it don’t mean anything. I know it’s important, I honestly do but we’re talking about playing. We’re talking about playing man. We’re talking about playing. We’re talking about playing. We’re not talking about my poor hurt back. We’re talking about playing. When you come to the arena and you see that I’m not there, you’ve seen me complaining about coming off the bench, you’ve seen me give everything I’ve got as long as I get my way exactly, but we’re talking about playing right now. … Hey I hear you, it’s funny to me too, hey it’s strange to me too but we’re talking about playing man, we’re not even talking about the my contract, which is what actually matters, we’re talking about playing … How the hell can I make my teammates better by playing?

Just substitute “AI” for “Bears”.

What happened today exposed quite a bit. It exposed AI for a guy who can play only on bad teams and make them mediocre, say what you want about him, he may have the heart of a champion, but not the mindet. It also exposed this trade for what it was, it was really not so much for AI, but for his expiring contract, with the kicker being Dumars might be able to get some productivity out of AI (although I have doubted this from Day 1).

What Dumars gets for that $20M will decide whether this trade was a winner or a loser, and we won’t know for sure until the summer of 2010. Also, how much mileage gets out of Chauncey will determine how big a loser this was, if it is a loser.

I don’t think what happened will have a bearing yet on whether a FA decides to play in Detroit. I really don’t know what to think about MC as a coach. He communicates poorly with the media, maybe it’s different with the players. Maybe he needs time to develop as a coach, you can defend some of what he’s done as trying to find an answer to an impossible problem. The AI situation clouds that picture dramatically, although I’m tending to think his upside isn’t all that great.

The reality, and I’ve said this before, is that there are only a handful of elite coaches in the NBA-Phil, Sloan, Pop, LB; the rest range from marginally competent to claimer. I’d like to see Lam get a shot at it (see my comments in Alley Oops), but Dumars apparently has decided he wants to go to a different direction.

I think there’s a good chance MC returns next year, but the clock will be on him. You can only put so much of this season on him, and that’s what probably saves him.

“AI = regression to the mean”

That is precisely what he is: an average efficiency scorer who can do so at extraordinarily high usage rates – i.e. a one-man average offense. That’s a valuable skill on a team like the 2001 76ers. It is a useless skill on the 2009 Pistons.

“I don’t think AI has much of a market … if any,” said one Western Conference executive. “Maybe some team that wants to get a ticket-sale bump. But a serious club, no way. His act is tired and even in his best years, I don’t think he was great enough to put up with all the BS he put teams through.”

Remember back in the 06 playoffs when the Pistons ran out of gas and most people were saying “Well if the Pistons had a franchise player/go-to-guy who could just dominate and take it to the hole, they would be ok”, granted it was flimsy thinking on some people’s part and probably a reaction to D-Wade and Lebron dominating us and wishing we had an equal type of player.
But I really start to wonder: Had we drafted say a Carmelo or D Wade, someone of that ilk, would we be better or would we struggle? Would it Probably hurt there careers too? (Granted there’s more to be said about AI ’s liabilities compared to say D-Wade, and Chauncey seems to be working well with Melo, but neither are in a system as rooted in teamball/unwillingness to change as Detroit)
Course on the other hand, Rick Carlise, Larry Brown and even Flip Saunders would have handled it better than Curry but ulitmatley I wonder if Dumars doesnt want to look at changing his perception on how team should be built.
Dont really have point to all that, just thinking outloud…

THE ONLY WAY THE PSITONS IS GOING TO WIN THE PLAYOFFS IS IF AI COME BACK AND COMMEtS{ PLAY HIS ROLE} THE REST OF THE TEAM IS TRYIN AND ITS NOT FEAR THAT THE ARE NOT GUNNA MAKE IT BECAUSE OF HIS PRIDE. ONLY TIME WILL TELL WAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT

It’s only once we’ve lost Allen Iverson, that we’re free to do anything.

On a large enough time line the survival rate of Allen Iverson will drop to zero.

@AI:

You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile.

finally the nightmare that is AI in a detroit uniform is done…. for good! we dont have to worry about him coming back seeing dumars decided to make the (albeit politically correct) press release saying he’s done!!

i hate a.i. he is responsible for everything bad. particularly the refereeing in the heat game a couple weekends ago. and i am really disgusted with the way he made wade leave his wife and young children. it is his fault dyess had to play such long minutes.

i am really, really mad that a.i. hurt himself with his self destructive comments. i want to punish him for that.

How will we replace Iverson’s production? Stuckey really has to step it up in the brick laying and unforced turnover department to make up for “The Cancer’s” absence.

Stuckey really has to step it up>>

======
This argument is too logical

Age age 22
====
Billups
-————-
Games 45
PPG 13.9
APG 3.8
TPG 2.2
FG% .386
3P% .362 (The following Year at age 23 Billups 3P% dropped to .171)
FT% .913

Stuckey (#s are through 04/03)
-————————————-
Games 72
PPG 13.4
APG 4.8
TPG 2.2
FG% .443
3P% .292
FT% .783

=====
Very similar numbers. Billups was already a great FT shooter but other than than that the numbers are very similar execpt that Stuckey has a far better assist to turnover ratio.

The comments above are mostly loopsided. So many AI-haters out there…

Do you remember the days where he dish out 7+ assists per game? His season average this year is still 5 assist per.

He may be selfish, but he has a bigger heart than 95% of the players in this league. He wants so much to win, win and win it all. That’s what I admire him, his altitude, his ability, I wasn’t a fan of his back in the old days. But if you don’t get a lot of minutes, even if you are starting, if the coach doesn’t make plays for you, then your stats won’t shine, as simple as that.

AI into Detroit is definitely a mismatch. Without AI, Detroit can’t even get 2 wins out of King James and his team.
