2009 Mock Drafting the Pistons
Recently I've been wondering, as I'm sure all of you have too, who the Pistons will take in this year's draft. Since we are under a month away from the big day, I want to leave you a list of all the reputable 2009 Mock Drafts around the internet and who they are guessing the Pistons will select.
Most mock drafts only have the first round, but I will list the selections from the 2nd round if the site provides those as well. What I have been planning on doing these final few weeks is going through the more popular mock drafts and analyzing the guesstimated Pistons picks. Stay tuned for those.
Chad Forde's 2009 Mock Draft on ESPN:
1st Round, 15th pick overall: Austin Daye SF/PF; 6'10"; 190 lbs.; Sophomore from Gonzaga
1st Round, 15th pick: B.J. Mullens C; 7'0"; 275 lbs.; Freshman from Ohio State
1st Round, 15th pick: Tyreke Evans SG; 6'6"; 219 lbs.; Freshman from Memphis
2nd Round, 36th pick: Dante Cunningham SF; 6'7"; 230; Senior from Villanova
2nd Round, 39th pick: Jeff Pendergraph PF; 6'9"; 230; Senior from Arizona State
2nd Round, 44th pick: Jerel McNeal SG; 6'3"; 200; Senior from Marquette
1st Round, 15th pick: Terrence Williams SG/SF; 6'6"; 220; Senior from Louisville
1st Round, 15th pick: Tyler Hansbrough PF; 6'9"; 250 lbs.; Senior from North Carolina
1st Round, 15th pick: Austin Daye SF/PF; 6'10"; 190 lbs.; Sophomore from Gonzaga
2nd Round, 36th pick: Toney Douglas PG/SG; 6'1"; 196 lbs.; Senior from Florida State
2nd Round, 39th pick: Rodrigue Beaubois PG; 6'2"; 182 lbs.; Cholet International
2nd Round, 44th pick: Jodie Meeks SG; 6'4"; 204 lbs.; Senior from Kentucky
1st Round, 15th pick: Eric Maynor PG; 6'2"; 175 lbs.; Senior from VCU
1st Round, 15th pick: Terrence Williams SG/SF; 6'6"; 220; Senior from Louisville
1st Round, 15th pick: James Johnson PF; 6'8"; 235 lbs.; Sophomore from Wake Forest
2nd Round, 36th pick: Victor Claver PF; 6'10"; 218 lbs.; Pamesa Valencia
2nd Round, 39th pick: Rodrigue Beaubois PG; 6'2"; 182 lbs.; Cholet International
2nd Round, 44th pick: Toney Douglas PG/SG; 6'1"; 196 lbs.; Senior from Florida State
1st Round, 15th pick: Terrence Williams SG/SF; 6'6"; 220; Senior from Louisville
There are a lot of good choices here and I think a lot of them will depend on what kind of offers the Pistons have received for current players and what they might be able to get done after the draft. No matter what, I know whoever Dumars picks he'll have a plan, and I will trust that plan.

If Tyreke Evans
is still there at #15 then there’s a whole lot of stupid GM’s out there, Evans has superstar written all over him.
I like the Dante Cunningham pick, he reminds me of Bass a little.

Daye
Isn’t Austin Daye a 6’11" 200lb Sophmore from Gonzaga, not a Junior from Louisville?

You're right
I must have read it wrong. Silly (big) mistake. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Good mocks
I’m really liking Eric Maynor and he’s who i’m going to be watching on draft day, hopefully no other team takes him. James Johnson would be excellent and could end up being a star because he’s shown the ability to take over games. Johnny Flynn is straight clutch, but his size worries me. He’s more of a scorer than a distributor anyway. Ty Lawson is probably the purest PG in the draft, he’s always looking to make the pass and wants his teammates to score rather than himself. He’s been massively underrated during the draft process which is surprising considering the championship. I wouldn’t be mad at a Ty Lawson choice at all.

I think the question is...
…how big of a rebuilding project do the Pistons want to make this? I realize that the guys who took the court this past season were hardly the Pistons we’ve followed for the previous six (in spite of many of them wearing those Pistons jerseys), so some level of rebuilding is necessary. But do they really want to scrap the whole thing and start over, or can they find a good mix of veterans and young players to at least be competitive while improving for the future? We’ll probably know way before the draft what the game plan is, just based on what moves they make before then. I, for one, hope that by this time next year I am not even thinking about what the Pistons are doing with the draft, but more what missing piece of the puzzle will be added to turn this back in to a championship caliber team.

I'm not sure much will happen before the draft
I could be wrong, but with free agency not beginning until July 1st and trades precluded until the Finals are over, which could be just a week from the draft, I don’t know if much will happen before the draft.
I know Joe is already coming up with trade ideas and probably talking to other GMs, but if the Finals goes 7 games that leaves just a week before the draft to execute something which might not be enough time. My guess is a lot of what the Pistons do will be dictated by who falls to them in the draft and what holes they were able to fill at the draft.
This might be a better strategy, too. In case they are not happy with who they get in the draft they can fix it by not only making a post-draft trade (knowing every piece you have), but by also using that draft pick as a possible part of the deal. I see the argument that making a trade prior to the draft can help the team focus on other areas during the draft, but too many times a guy you thought might be available at a certain pick becomes unavailable. Then that means a player you traded before the draft who could have been the one you used to get someone in place of the guy you didn’t get during the draft is no longer available to trade. If that makes sense….
It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, though. I definitely hope that by this time next year I am not even thinking about what the Pistons are doing with the draft and thinking more along the lines of what piece do we need for the puzzle. In fact, I hope this time next year, we’re thinking about the NBA Finals. Although that’s quite some wishful thinking.
