Kwame Brown will return

Vince Ellis reports that Kwame Brown has decided against opting out: "He started something last year and he wants to finish it," [Brown's agent Mark] Bartelstein said. "In the second half of last season, he started to come on. And he feels he has something to prove."

Well that was a no-brainer.

I’m glad to have him as a back-up, for one, and second, I don’t see him getting more money anywhere else.

I agree with what seems to be the consensus: Kwame is, for the money, a solid backup, so I’m happy he is staying. Still, Kwame isn’t the starting center on a championship team, unless we imagine a true superstar big and maybe even other upgrades. So we still need to get two starting bigs, I think.

But I’m glad he’s here. He seems to have a good attitude, he doesn’t try to do too much. And I think he could play 15-20 mins a night on a championship-caliber team. Plus, we need a big body, especially since Detroit will now have to contend with both Howard and Shaq, and likely without Rasheed (who played Howard quite well).

I = Kwame fan from the Laker days. I have no reasoning for this. Maybe it was that “battered wife who stays with husband because she doesn’t know any better” quality to the Kwame/Kobe relationship.

I like what he did for the money. He was a positive last season, which was a negative one.

Off topic, David Lee’s agent took offense to NY bringing in Jordan Hill and Darko, so I’d say once you shoot your mouth of like that, it starts to sever the relationship between player and team. Dumars, let’s pursue.

Champagne is on me !!

The Detroit Pistons have fired Michael Curry as coach, the team announced Tuesday.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” Pistons president Joe Dumars said in a statement. “I want to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the organization. However, at this time, I have decided to make a change.”

Curry was named coach on June 10, 2008 and was 39-43 this past season.

The Pistons were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games.

AKC is right! It’s on ESPN’s nba page.

This is the happiest I’ve ever been after hearing someone got fired, it’s like an early birthday, christmas and/or hanukah present all wrapped into one short press clipping!

We might have a real coach next season!

Chad Ford10:30 AM

I think they’ll make a run at Doug Collins, Avery Johnson and John Kuester as the darkhorse

JoeD has definitely lost the touch. Look at his mistakes in the past year only: First giving an extension to Rip. Second, the Billups trade. Third, sticking with Curry so long. Fourth, trading Amir Johnson without giving him a shot to perform. Poor all around.

I know, wrong place but Joe D just fired Curry! Happy Days!

…nevermind. looks like I’ve been trumped by Roll the Dyess!

According to Dumars confidant Chad Ford:

I think Curry had a tough time making the transition to player and confidant to head coach. I especially think he had a difficult relationship with Richard Hamilton after benching Hamilton in favor of Allen Iverson.I can tell you the Pistons are going to go with someone with more head coaching experience … but I don’t know who it will be.

I’m guessing this means that Rip is probably not getting moved.

I also am glad MC is gone. To be fair, he was put in a tough position last year. But also to be fair, his ever-changing lineups and rotations, not to mention the lack of evidence of competent in-game coaching, made a tough situation even worse than it had to be.

Let’s not get too cheerful, though. Whoever the new coach will be is (assuming ’Sheed and/or Dyess leave) is inheriting something that will be in significant ways even messier than what Curry got. Detroit will either have an entirely new frontcourt, or a less talented frontcourt, or possibly both.

On the other hand, it’s hard for me to imagine Detroit re-tooling short or long term with Curry, so this is a necessary first step. Now, I wonder who his replacement will be. . . .

And I like Kwame Brown as a Piston. Welcome back big man!

by joejoejoe on Jun 30, 2009 1:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I am happy Curry is gone too…but to stay true to the thread, I like Kwame for $4 mil per. He is a capable big man that stays within his own limitations so as to not try and do too much. I would be happy if he retired as our permanent backup as long as he never asked for a raise and showed up for work every day.

Joel, I’ve long been a Kwame follower too. I don’t know why either. Him and Odom. I’ve always wanted to see them fulfill their potential.

Kwame needs to be more aggressive.
