Pistons Fire Michael Curry
[Note by your friendly BullsBlogger, 06/30/09 2:48 PM CDT: Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts to get the conversation rolling. I'll assume Packey will have more later -ed.]
From ESPN.com:
"This was a difficult decision to make," Pistons president Joe Dumars said in a statement. "I want to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the organization. However, at this time, I have decided to make a change."
I am sure I am not alone in thinking this (obviously), but Bill Laimbeer currently does not have a job. Speculation certainly suggests he will be Curry's replacement, though I've learned to expect the unexpected with Joe Dumars.

In the Yahoo article
it suggests that Doug Collins will be back as coach. I like the Laimbeer idea though, hopefully he could bring back some of the toughness we have been lacking for the past few years.

Laimbeer won't get this job, at least not right now
I think Dumars is going to go with a veteran coach (perhaps Doug Collins, like Woj’s article suggest) rather than risk another season on a rookie coach like Curry. This should be especially true if the Pistons look to sign a big name veteran FA or 2

Laimbeer isn't new to Detroit Coaching though
he has won a Couple Championships with the Shock (Yes i know that the WNBA is nothing like the NBA but still its a Championship) and while he would be a “Rookie” i think he would get more respect from a lot of Players. a second thing why did he resign? Did he know what was going to happen? it seems to me that Joe Dumars said hey look the players don’t really respect Curry so im going to fire him and i want you to take over for him

Yes, I'm well aware of his 'coaching resume"
I hear what you are saying. He would get more respect than Curry, no doubt……but the bar wasn’t exactly set very high by the last guy, ya know? I can remember Rip ripping into (no pun intended) Curry in a huddle at the beginning of last season….I’m talkin like November, maybe early December. For him to be that unrespected by his players that quickly, that’s pretty bad. Laimbeer would be an upgrade over Curry now….and he would have been a better choice to take over last year as well. However, I think it’s time to stop setting the sights so low. Who were the coaches that Detroit achieved its biggest successes under recently? Saunders and Brown…both experienced, ‘name" guys. Personally, I do not like Brown’s personality and ego, but you cannot deny the results he has repeatedly produced. In any event, I think it will take some real balls on Dumars’ part to hire another rookie coach. Dumar’s job sounds like it is in no way in jeopardy, but you can only make so many mistakes on coaches before other heads start to roll…. If you’re looking for a holdover from the Bad Boys Championship days to lead the team, I think they Isiah Thomas is looking for a coaching job…..?
That is an interesting conspirary you pose about Dumars letting Laimbeer know what was up…… I think it is probably more likely that Laimbeer thought he was being ‘type-cast’ as a women’s coach and did not want to ruin his chance to break into the NBA coaching game. From what I understand, he has been wanting to coach in the NBA for years and no one has shown any real interest. It’ll be interesting to see if that changes now.

i don't want Laimbeer
i wan’t Avery Johnson. to me the problem with the “Flip Saunders era” was that the players (Billups,Wallace) were the ones who really ran the team, Larry Brown had complete control and i believe Avery Johnson would too

I agree about the players being in control
Wallace and Billups were in control……..but I think that was a big part of the success. I thought the Pistons have been pretty overrated since about 2006 and were actually overacheiving by having a record as good as they did and the consecutive conference finals appearances.

I haven't heard anything about Avery...
but it would be interesting. He could probably do a lot for the development of Stuckey. However, he developed a reputation as someone who is not a “player’s coach” from his time in Dallas. Devin Harris argued with him, Josh Howard had issues with him, and both Nowitzki and Kidd openly campaigned for Avery to not be brought back the next year.
So if they hire someone not known as a “player’s coach”, does that hurt their chances in recruiting Free Agents? I would think so. For example, it’d be a lot easier to recruit someone to play for D’Antoni than Skiles…..and Avery had a reputation much like Skiles.

Collins
is widely regarded as a brilliant basketball mind, I always loved his clips on ESPN. The problem with him is he runs things to mechanical and doesn’t take into account emotions and the flow of the game.

Give Him A Chance
Bill should be able to get a job. I hope with the DP. Here are other names I will throw out there. Greg Kelser besides Doug Collins man. Give the bad boy a chance though. If it doesn’t work out then blame him too and get rid of him and move on.

I'm actually a little surprised by this...
I thought he said he was going to give him one more year (considering we traded away Billups)?

Something to thing about
Inevitably this day was soon to come in the light of our ever changing line-up. This is a business and its time for a new CEO, but I don’t think it will be Bill Laimbeer. The only thing he can bring to the table is nostalgia but not the bit we need in order to be competitive. We need that cutting edge of determination and drive with assertion and we can look to Tom Thibodeu to be the start for that new beginning. He has an absolute knack for getting guys ready to play, developing their talents fully and knowing where they truly excel on the floor. Change is good only if you know the direction you are going, and we are ready for the big ring….
