Stay Away!
Ben Gordon can not Start nor does he play Defense, Charlie Villanueva is 6-11 and while he isn't really known for being a great Defender or a great player for that matter he would fill a hole unlike Gordon. My Free Agents i would sign
Ron Artest: A Defensive Minded SF that makes Tayshaun Prince expendable, to bad he had to punch out a fan here in Detroit
Shawn Marion: a SF/PF hybrid who plays good defense and if you could revive him to what he was you will be getting a great player at a small price, look at the guys that came to Detroit and revived there Careers (Billups,Rip,Ben Wallace,McDyess)
Andre Miller: A pass first PG who would most likely buy into the Defensive minded game that the Pistons SHOULD play
since you have Artest now you can go ahead and trade Tay if you would like for a Big man the Clippers are looking to sell try and get Chris Kaman or Marcus Camby even. look i know this wouldn't be a young team but it would be a very tough Defensive minded team that is still capable of putting up points, Artest will shut down the likes of Lebron James,Paul Pierce,Vince Carter,Josh Smith and the rest. Rip handles every SG in the League with ease and Andre Miller should hold his own with most PGs. Marions Length and Kamans size will give opposing Offenses trouble and since you have a nice front court you might be able to bring back Dyess which would give you a tremendous bench (Dyess,Stuckey,Affalo,Bynum,Maxiell,Brown, whatever Rookies make the team).
Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva don't give us an upgrade on the Defensive end they take away from the Defense in fact, why do you want this? do you want Rip or Gordon? because thats what it is if Ben Gordon is signed Rip is traded. so thats the question do you want Ben and Charlie as your starting* SG and PF for the next 4 years? i know i dont.
* Ben Gordon will probably be a highly overpaid 6th man not a Starter

I feel your pain, brother
I think Detroit is going to be the loser in the Gordon sweepstakes….and walk away with him for about $50-60mil/5 yrs….
Villanueva would be a good grab, if they don’t overpay
Marion is past his prime and declining fast, plus he has an ego…..PLUS he turned down a 3 yr/30 mil extension last season, so he wants to be overpaid. And overpaying for someone who is 30 and their ENTIRE game is based on athleticism is not a good idea.
Artest is going to be one of the most interesting aspects of free agency! I thought he was a lock to re-sign in Houston until Yao’s diagnosis came out. Now, who the hell knows?? Except for assaulting their fanbase, Artest seems like he’d be a great fit in the motor city

Marion
is 31, Miller is (I believe) 32. Is that really how you want to start the rebuilding process??
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Not to mention
Miller can’t hit a 3 to save his life, on a team that already can’t hit from outside, why sign another that can’t operate from downtown?

Pass first PG
i agree that its an old team but you know if Joe Dumars could have drafted more then 3 NBA Starters (Okur,Stuckey,Tay) in his Career as Pistons GM then we wouldn’t be having to sign Ben Gordon or Villanueva or Miller and Marion. Joe Dumars has Drafted a replacement for Rip (Stuckey)and maybe Tay (Daye) where is his backup for Sheed? or Chauncey? Dyess? he has had how many Draft picks to get players that will take over for his vets he has done a terrible Job drafting terrible
Most of those picks
Were late into the first round or not a first round at all. The Darko, Cleeves, and White picks were well before the core was in place. Amir was supposed to be alot better than he was, and Maxiell was thought to be able to start soon. Joe did his best with the resources at hand. Don’t close your eyes on Afflalo, he can be a valuable player soon.

Pistons haven't had great draft position
There is only so much you can do with late round picks….. Obviously Darko was a huge failure on Joe’s part, but other than that I think his drafting has been decent, from an outsider’s view. Still, had he picked one of about 10 others players over Darko, Detroit may be in a completely different boat today….

I'm Convinced Without Darko
We don’t win the ship. Everyone says Sheed was the most important part of that championship squad, and if Darko hadn’t busted, we wouldn’t have traded for Sheed.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Interesting
That is definitely possible. The did possibly win that one championship because of drafting Darko.
But if he had drafted Wade/Bosh/Melo, they quite possibly could have won the championship in at least half the years since then. I’m not saying the Pistons would have 3 championships in the past 6 years, but I would think with one of those 3 in the lineup, they would have had a better chance than they did with the roster they had.

I agree
Times would certainly be easier if we had a cornerstone to build around, but we did achieve the greatest feat possible, and hey I’d give up anybody if that’s the result
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
I love Afflalo
thats why Gordon is a waste of time you have Stuckey,Rip and Afflalo why get another SG? and no Stuckey is not a PG he is a SG
Keith Langlois made a good point
He said something to the effect of, Dumars played on a team where Vinnie Johnson, Isiah Thomas, and Joe Dumars were able to get enough minutes and shots in which they were all effective. The same thing could happen here, I wouldn’t object to keeping Rip and having Gordon come off the bench ala Manu.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Gordon ain't coming off the bench
No way would go for that….not a chance. He has been bitching publicly about not starting for years and years now. Even making starter money, I don’t think he would sign with the team after knowing he would get such a perceived slight.
Gordon, at a decent price (6-7 million) coming off the bench, would be a commodity on absolutely every team in the NBA. However, wanting big money and fulltime starter job, that makes him look a lot less attractive.

Gordon signed knowing he would be a sixth man.
The idea that he’s a sixth man was never the problem – the problem was that he was the sixth man starting behind such quality players as Thabo Sefolosha and Chris Duhon [or even, at points, Larry Hughes].

"BEN! SHOOT! SHOOOOTTTT!!! WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?"
-This segues nicely into my Timeout Management classes - order now!
detpistons3 i tottaly agree
just a small problem Isiah Thomas,Joe Dumars and Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson played in an era where the Salary Cap wasn’t an issue you could get anybody and build up a franchise. Yes Bynum*,Rip,Tay,Villanueva and Brown looks like a nice first team and Stuckey,Gordon,Daye,Maxiell and Plastied look like a nice 2nd team and Afflalo,Summers,Jerkbo,Washington will probably be fighting for minutes too heck maybe even Sharpe if he can stay awake, im just saying if we couldn’t get out of the first round of the playoffs with last years roster i think we need better players then Gordon and Villanueva. if we could somehow sign a third guy (PG or C) then maybe they have a chance i think keeping Tay and Rip is the right thing to do at least for this year so you can let the other players develop.
the reason i have Bynum starting
is because i think we would want to have a bigger guard in each lineup
umm why is he not here now?
Because he just plain failed thats why. Hey i was always an Amir fan and i think that trade was the stupidest thing ever, i mean how old is he 24? he still has upside you aren’t paying him a ton so why the heck do you trade a 24 year old that is 6’10’’ and has NBA Experiance? please tell me
that being said he really hasn't done to well
but still he is real young
Amir didn't turn into the player he could be
He was only good for a 1 minute stint in which he would foul 3 times. Sure he was young, but he was overpaid. 3.5 mil was far too much to pay for upside. When trading him for cap relief would result in the ability to sign more players. Keep in mind even if we sign two starters, our bench is pretty thin.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Remind me again, what was Amir traded for?
I’m not being sarcastic….I don’t remember and I’m too lazy to look it up.

Ouch
not sure I would have done that….he wasn’t progressing as quick as they Pistons probably would have liked, but he seemed like he had some upside and an affordable contract…. of course, if they turn this cap space into something big this summer on the market, it could turn out to be brilliant

Remember DP3 you were calling for Josh Howard about a month ago..
and he is 29 coming off of surgery..

This whole Gordon doesn't play D is a shame....
Get real…hes no Kobe, but hes serviceable and as efficient as they come as a scorerer…
http://cmufootball.blogspot.com/
Scorerer lol :P
But I agree, those who say Gordon can’t play defense probably haven’t watched a Chicago game in their life. Gordon will hold his own, but don’t expect him to hold Kobe under 20pts.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Ben Gordon sign for 11 Million Dollars a year for 5 years
Who the heck said that wouldn’t happen? just saying. oh and Charlie Villanueva signs for 7 Million a year for 5 years ther goes 18 million of your 20 million in Cap Space goodbye Rip goodbye Tay we would like to thank you for your years of service to the city of Detroit ( oh im sorry Monica Conyers Auburn Hills).
Not so
It’d only be about 16 million of the 20million, because Gordon’s contract isn’t going to start at 11 mil, that’s the average amount. It’ll actually start at 9.5
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Umm who the heck will you sign with 4 million?
with holes at PG,C and probably SF how will you fill these areas? we could also use a few upgrades on the Bench
Where's the hole at PG?
If you’re talking about a 3rd PG off the bench, that can be acquired from the D-League. Just look at Will Bynum. The 4 million will be great in trades. It allows for more flexibiltiy and manuevability against the cap.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Wait a minute....
Are you saying the fact that Ben Gordon doesn’t play D is a shame? Or were you trying to say the reputation that he doesn’t is a “sham”? :)

He's saying
Everyone is hyping up Gordon’s lack of defense. he’s actually alot better than people say he is.
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
I know, it was a hilarious typo though if you look at the whole statement....*sigh*, nevermind
I’m hearing so much positive about Gordon’s defense (although soley from this blog and not from any impartial source) that its actually starting to get over-hyped.
Do BG’s defensive liabilities stem mainly from being an undersized shooting guard? Yes, but that doesn’t make them non-existent
