Judging Joe Dumars, as the Pistons rebuild
Mr. Dave Dial of MLIVE has a great piece here breaking down Mr. Michael Rosenberg's recent column and a blog by Pistons beat writer Mr. Keith Langlois, agreeing in most with what they have to say.
While I agree with a commenter that Mr. Langlois is not going to openly criticize Joe Dumars seeing as he is employed by the organization (that would be job suicide), I think Mr. Dial hits the nail on the head in general with his reactions to Joe Dumars and what exactly went wrong this past season.
Fans need to give Dumars a break and everything that was bad this past season wasn't solely on the shoulders of "The Answer."

This is good stuff
Dial does a great job here. The things that Dumars has been able to accomplish since his tenure here at GM are nothing short of amazing. Going from dominance and then turning around to start another run with young players is pretty special, not many teams are going to be able to do that. Just wait until Tim Duncan retires or declines and let’s see where hte Spurs are. Detroit doesn’t have to worry about that. As long as Dumars commands the big seat, I’m confident we’ll be competitive for a long time.

A good course of action
For the rest of the offseason that can basically kill two birds with one stone, is first sign Gooden for, not the entire 3.2 mil, but close. Then sign Ben Wallace/Theo Ratliff/Any other Vet big man, for the veteran’s minimum. Finally, I’ve heard rumblings around the Hornet’s blogs that NO may be interested in Kwame Brown and Jason Maxiell for Tyson Chandler. This is a great move because we get the big man we need, and we don’t have to offer any main pieces. We’ll have decent front court depth, but nothing spectacular. It would be great if we could pick up one more big man from the D-League (I like Dwayne Jones) for the minimum. The starting lineup would pan out like this:
PG: Stuckey / Will Bynum / Singletary?
SG: Hamilton / Ben Gordon / Deron Washington
SF: Tayshaun / Daye / Jerebko
PF: Villanueva / Gooden / Summers
C: Chandler / Ben Wallace(?) / Dwayne Jones
that’s 15 roster spots, and it looks like a pretty great offensive team, the defense doesn’t look spectacular, but if New Orleans could survive with Peja Stojakovic out on the perimeter I’m sure we can handle Gordon and Stuckey.

max and Brown for Chandler
not so sure about that one.
If im joe d then arnie k better give me a super thumbs up on Chandler’s foot issues if Im even considering this trade.
Plus I dont think the salaries come anywhere close to matching.

First
The salaries match, Here’s the trade machine results. Even if they didn’t, we have the cap room to take on some extra contract. But it’s a moot point, because the trade works, and I’m pretty sure we get a trade exception out of it.
And this is a pretty safe trade. Centers like Kwame are a dime a dozen, there’s probably 2 or 3 of them in FA right now. Sure Maxiell is a loss, but he can be replaced. How many undersized power forwards are there in this league?
The worst thing that will happen, is Chandler remains injured, and we have to start Gooden, which isn’t so bad. I would put Gooden above Kwame.
The best thing that will happen, is Chandler goes back to the level he was playing at 2 years prior, and we have a defensive stopper who’s only 27. Villanueva and Chandler is very similar to David West and Chandler. It’ll be a great frontcourt pairing, and the reward outweighs the risk in my opinion. You have to take a risk here (and it’s certainly not much of a risk). Phoenix did the same with Shaq, and it didn’t result in a championship, but Shaq still played at a very high level. If Chandler can remain healthy (and I am extremely confident in Kander’s abilities) this trade can go down as one of the biggest steal this year. Because to the rest of the league, Kwame and Maxiell are spare parts.

Not sure
thanks for looking up the trade machine salaries though
There have been some SERIOUS doubts about Chandler’s health. I would do that deal IF there was an assurance of him being healthy. If not I wouldnt touch Chandler with a 10 foot pole.

I understand the hesitation
And I’m with you. If we were trading one of our main pieces, Rip or Tayshaun for Chandler. I wouldn’t even touch this trade. But this is Kwame Brown and Jason Maxiell, they’re replaceable assets. It’s a small risk with an extremely high reward. Young 7 footers don’t come by often, and this is a chance to secure one for the future. If it doesn’t work, we only sacrificed some spare parts. And Chandler does have a huge contract, I don’t know who the free agents are in the 2011-2012 season, but we can probably net someone decent for 8mil or so when Chandler’s 13million dollar contract comes off the books.
