He's inconsistent
But when he brings it, he can put up 10 and 10 like that. I’ve heard he’s not a good defender, it may come from being on the Sonics and Knicks, two teams not known for defense. I’ve always held the belief a 30 year old can learn how to play defense, it’s all about will as long as the player has lateral quickness and arms that haven’t been amputated, a player has the capability of playing decent defense. The only exception comes in post defense, where strength and position play the most important role.

I didn't fully understand those last 2 sentences
You do know that Wilcox is only 26-years old (will be 27 when the season starts), right?

Yeah I know that
Reading that over I sound a bit contradictory lol I was just putting emphasis on that any player can learn defense, no matter the age.

BennieBladesFan...
…is starting to sound more and more like one of Mike Tyson’s former hype-men. Does Joe D have him on the pay roll? Anyway, this is another move that does nothing for me either way. I think I’d almost rather have Aaron Afflalo back since they now don’t have a single guard that can play D. Either way, I don’t hate this move but I certainly don’t love it and I really wish we could have just saved the cap space for another time when maybe a truly talented player may become available. This looks more to me like Joey D making a move for the sake of making a move than it does look like a legitimate move to improve the team long term.
Dude.....
….Lay off im no fan of Tyson…..So in other words he doesnt have any size?…..yes he does……Geez…..this move is great….he avg 13 and 7 just 2 years ago…..no reason to think he cant do that again……once we trade for Chandler this team is going to be in really really good shape.

Mushy...
Is starting to sound like he’s never experienced a good season of basketball from these Pistons. If you have a problem with the Pistons, go follow Memphis, that might give you something to cheer about.

While I admit...
…that I am getting very sour about this off season, it is BECAUSE this team has given us so much to cheer about. Rebuilding was/is necessary because of how stagnant this team had gotten. I understand that, I appreciate that, and I’ll be patient once I see that happening. Last season should have been the big step backwards in order to eventually take a couple big steps forward. Instead it’s looking more like last season was the big step backwards to take one step sideways. I would be happy to see another abysmal season if it meant getting back to being a contender. I just don’t think what they’ve done will make this team a contender and worse yet it seems like this is the team we’ll be stuck with for a while now.
That comment was a bit harsh
But I don’t think there’s a reason to be pessimistic about the current squad we have. Rather than focusing on what we don’t have, let’s focus on what we do.
Ben Gordon – Before Chauncey was ever in Detroit, people said similar things about him that they do about Ben Gordon. He’s only a shooter, a 2 guard in a point’s body. And we all know how Chauncey turned out. Will Gordon ever be able to carry the reigns of an offense? I’m not sure about that. But the circumstances in which Dumasrs brought Gordon in is similar to Chauncey’s addition. Both weren’t identified as stars (Chauncey was being labeled a bust early in his career), and both had an excellent playoff showing that put them on Joe D’s wishlist. The Gordon we are getting may not be the same Gordon we end up with in a few years. We’ve seen guys take that next step when they arrive in Detroit, Gordon may do the same. He can go from great player, to star. He’s only 26, same age as Chauncey was when he arrived, and look how far Chauncey came. I think Gordon will learn when to pass and when to shoot, and will become a more efficient player as his time goes in Detroit.
Charlie Villanueva – Charlie Villanueva is alerady a huge offensive threat, he once put up 48 pts in his rookie season. Charlie Villanueva is another one of those guys that will turn into a great player once he comes to Detroit (almost like Hamilton). Take a look at his per 36 numbers, 20 pts 8 rebs and 1 blk. That’s very impressive, and he’s only 24, he’s not undersized, and he’s got decent bulk. There’s nothing holding him back from pulling down 8-10 rebs a game as he progresses. He could also add more blocks as his timing gets better. The sky’s the limit with this kid.
Rodney Stuckey – This horse’s been beaten before, Stuck posesses all the tools to become a great player in this league. He can drive the lane, he’s got decent court vision, he’s got excellent size for the point guard position, and he has the will to get better. Pistons fans have become impatient with his PG progression, but you have to give him time. Look how long it took Chauncey! If the Warriors are still comfortable with Monta Ellis as their point, the Pistons should be more than comfortable with Stuck. We’ve seen flashes of talent during the season, 40 pt performances popped up now and then. But with a better team surrounding him, we should see him become even better. When Stuckey drove the lane, the help defense would converge on him so he would try to kick out, but Detroit didn’t have much of a 3 point threat, so the play ended up dead. WIth Gordon and Villanueva, in addition to Rip and Tay, Stuckey has a myriad of options to opt for when help defense arrives. Stuckey needs to hit the gym and work on that jumper, because as of now defenders can sag off to take away the drive, and Stuckey can’t make them pay but putting up a jumper.
Rip & Tay- Veterans that’ll lead the young guys to success, we all know what we can get with these guys
Austin Daye/Dajuan Summers/Jonas Jerebko- We’ve seen what they can do in the summer league, if one of them turns into a good/great player (like Tayshaun) which is very possible, Detroit ends up with 4 guys that are either superstars or very close to it. That’s alot to be excited about.

Solid Points
The CV31 signing has admittedly grown on me. His youth and his remaining potential are certainly something to be excited about, and I have enjoyed the fact that he’s obviously got some enthusiasm about where he’s at. Whether that’s the $7mil/yr talking is irrelevant as long as his enthusiasm is matched by his work ethic.
I will also admit that I had forgotten how young, and raw, Chauncey was when he signed with the Pistons. However, you can say what you want about Larry Brown, but Brown was a major contributing factor to the improvement Chauncey made as a Piston. Will Gordon have the benefit of that kind of contribution with the new Piston’s coaching staff? Also, I could be wrong but I don’t think Chauncey signed the BIG contract until his original deal had almost expired. Did they sign Chauncey to a $11mil/yr deal right out of Milwaukee? If the sky is still the limit with Gordon, why not wait it out until you know for sure. The problem with an $77 million contract is that once you’ve got it, it’s not easy to change your mind. Obviously the counter argument is that Gordon would not have signed for less money, but I guess I don’t have an issue taking that risk if your backup plan is to max out an offer to Dwayne Wade next season, or Lebron James, or even Chris Bosh? I realize you may not get the one you want, but there’s only so much money to go around and you can’t convince me that if you’ve got the most space under the cap that you couldn’t have signed at least one of them. I would absolutely love to seen any of them in a Pistons uniform next season. Gordon may be MVP caliber, but why not pay a little more and pay MVP money for known MVP talent? Regardless of who you would end up with they seem more likely to be the player I would want to build my team around.
I guess the point I keep trying to make is, I don’t believe the makeup of this team…as it sits today…is Championship caliber. The contracts that they have for the next few years, means this is likely the team we have for the next few years. It looks, to me, like the “rebuilding” is over. Unless you can find another team willing to take on a long term contract with Rip, or even the two year contract with Tay, this is your team for the next two seasons at least.
I think you should be GM instead of Joe D. Then you could get it all right.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!
BG, CV, & Wilcox
I like these 3 moves for all the right reasons. Flashback several years to when Rip was labeled as just a shooter from the Wizards…or Big Ben was just an Undersized guy trying to play Center. or how bout Rasheed with his inside outside game. No one really cared for those moves then, but look how it all turned out. Sure the celtics, Orlando, Cavs will be good this yr, but got no younger. Dumars has just gone and practically replaced his winning 5 with 5 guys of the same mold.
Rip = Gordon
Sheed = CV
Big Ben = Wilcox
Prince = Daye
Stop for a moment and really look at the games of the players, stats, similarities in bodies & athleticism. These guys are scary similar and if they get the us against the world mentality, then their upside is endless.
As for Billups, sure Stuckey is here, but if you can get a GREAT floor general, you have plenty of pieces to offer (Rip, Prince, Stuckey…all trade bait).
