Antonio McDyess may have just signed with the Spurs

That's what an unnamed "league source" has told Y!'s Adrian Wojnarowski, who's been killing it this offseason with the scoops. Apparently it's a two-year deal for the MLE that likely includes a partial guarantee for a third season. (Update: Woj just said on Twitter that the total guaranteed value is $15 million.)

For reference, the Pistons are unable to offer the MLE since they have cap space, and they're unable to go over the cap to keep McDyess since they lost his Bird Rights when they included him in the Billups/Iverson swap.

Update: Here's my ode to McDyess on FanHouse.

Good for you, Dyess. I hope you end your career with a ring on your finger, and SA is certainly the place to do it. Best of all, you’re not far from home either. Kudos, buddy.

He’s going to have a real chance to win a ring…which he deserves. Still…it’s really sad to see him go.

It’s too bad that players like Dice don’t read blogs like this (or if they do, they don’t let us know). If they did, they’d see the mad love that we have for players like Dice — players who leave it all out there and genuinely care about the franchise and its fans.

Your ring will cure my heartache.

1) Detroit
2) Denver / SA
3) Maybe Charlotte, if Jod reads the end of the last thread.

Goddamn. Sheed and Dice were my faves on this team – a sort of yin and yang – one fiery and angry and out of control, the other quietly and surely doing his job every night. The one who would get the Ts, who could have been THE MAN but chose not to, the other who was once the man and never could be again and yet played so fucking hard it hurt to watch. The one who jacked up impossible shots and sometimes made them, giving us extremes of anger and joy, the other with a laser-beam to the net from 18" and yet sometimes did not have the knees to keep up with younger players underneath the rim. The one who screamed “Ball don’t lie” and the other who didn’t talk much but went home after a big loss wearing his jersey. Heart and soul. Gone and gone.

I’ll miss you Dyess. Thanks for always playing 100% on the court and being a class act. The media will play it as Sheed being a bigger pick up then Dyess, but we all know the truth.

first sheed and now dice, man im really going miss those guys. dice was the paragon of class and i loved how he always left it all on the floor. he deserved better than last years showing. good luck dice, i will be rooting for the spurs in the west!

If Dice can play at the level he did last year, and Manu and Duncan are healthy, the Spurs are probably the best team in the NBA.

Parker/Manu/Jefferson/Dice/Duncan… That is a ridiculously good core.

Add me to the list of people who will be rooting for Dice and the Spurs next season. Also, not only would it be awesome to see Dice get a ring, but if the Spurs could take out LA and the Cav’s along the way, that would be pretty much the next best thing to the Pistons winning the title.

Dice gets a ring, Kobe and Lebron get stomped, one can only hope…

In all my years being a Piston fan, few have moved me like this man has. Go look up classy in any dictionary and he has to be the definition. I remember when Dumars had a citizenship award named after him. I wish we could find a way to honor Dyess the same way. A heart of Gold. Treat him well , San Antonio or you will bring the wrath of Dyess fans on you. Best in class forever.

Mad love for Dyess. Classy guy. When the Pistons were sliding last season, Dyess looked like the only one who continued to play at a championship level. I mean, everyone else looked miserable and packed it in. Those 20-20 nights… all the rebounds… all the hustle plays… his sniper 18’ jumpers. Do well, Antonio. Detroit will miss you.

Well, Spurs are my new team out West. I want him to get a ring more than I want Chauncey to get one.

Some interesting info from Rosenburg about Charlie V.

“Villanueva played at least 30 minutes in 29 games last season. His averages in those 29 games: 23.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, 36 minutes. The rebound numbers especially impressed me, because when his team has the ball, Villanueva spends a lot of time on the perimeter, and it is hard to rebound from there.

By comparison: Toronto star Chris Bosh averaged 22.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in 38 minutes last season."

He should get a lot of minutes even if we add Bass or make a trade for a big. If he puts up anything close to that we got a steal for 7M a year.

First, Dice you will be missed, and may you get that elusive ring you most definitely deserve.

Second, I love the Charlie V signing and I will love the BG signing if, and only if, we are able to make a deal to get a decent center on our team.(most likely RIP will have to be traded)

Third, if we could pull of that deal with Charlotte that would get us Okafor, Gerald, Wallace, and Diop or Mohammed I would hope that Joe D would jump at that deal. Of course, that deal is just speculation and I don’t think that that deal is an option right now. However it would be nice to have those 2 guys become Pistons.

This is off the subject, but how do Prince get a trading pass, but everybody ready to get rid of Rip. Prince make about the same amount money that Rip does, but their no double teams require for Prince when going up against other teams. Who really should be leaving Detroit?

Even if we didn’t have too many SG’s, I would choose for RIP to leave, but that’s just my personal opinion. RIP is a great scorer no doubt but he isn’t much of anything else. In the right system(Larry Brown) he can run his counterpart ragged, but the past few years he hasn’t really been doing that as much. Prince is your do-it-all kind of guy. He can score if you need him to, he can rebound, he can handle the point guard duties if need be, and he is still a pretty darn good defender. He does it all without having a diva attitude so I definitely like that about him. He is kind of like the glue piece that just holds things together. But a great man once said, “just epinion.”

@joe

We have 3,245 shooting guards. We also have 2,917 small forwards, but Tay’s a little younger and his replacements are REALLY young, so he could be useful if only in a “wise old man” type role. Rip on the other hand has been made redundant by the singing of BG, unless we do the “small ball” thing again, and I’m positive that no one wants that.

by Joel on Jul 9, 2009 8:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see why you guys constantly say Rip is chopped liver now that we have Gordon. Gordon is an awful defender, his opposing eFG% is way over 50%, in fact over 60% when he plays PG. In fact, his team defense is so bad that he actually has a negative net impact on the game.

He’s a Vinnie Johnson type player that you bring off the bench to provide instant scoring. The only problem is that Joe overpaid. Chicago didn’t even give an offer, who’s to say that BG would have turned down an $8 mil/year deal when that’s his best option?

by Ali on Jul 9, 2009 8:33 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Rip’s not chopped liver, but he is an expensive SG that is 5 years older than the SG we just signed on long term. So regardless if you like him or not, the fact is that he’s redundant now. Hence all the trade scenarios.

And BTW, if we could get Okafor for Rip+extras, we do that deal yesterday.

Joel +1

If you look at the composition of our roster over the next few years, there is just no way we can be competitive with over $20 million per year committed to a pair of less than superstar SG’s.

That’s a horrible use of resources almost any way you slice it (as SG is generally the easiest position to find a capable replacement player), and it’s even more devastating because we don’t already have a solid defensive frontcourt in place, which is the only scenario in which having both Rip and Gordon could possibly make sense.

Here’s our salary situation without Gordon/CV added in yet:
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/detroit.htm

With them added we’re up to around $47 mil committed next year for only Rip/Tay/Gordon/CV/Max/Stuck/AA.

We’d be less than $10 mil under next years salary cap, without extending Bynum, and with CV and Max being the only bigs on the roster. That is terrifying.

by Birdman on Jul 9, 2009 10:18 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@ Boney-

I didn’t list them because I don’t know what their salaries will be (and in the case of Summers and Jerebko, as 2nd round picks they aren’t guaranteed contracts).

But sure, add them to that list, and say that brings us up to around $50m. Then we have maybe $5m in salary cap space, still without Bynum extended, and still with no defensive presence in the frontcourt. I’d say that is pretty worrisome.

I would be surprised if Will Bynum doesn’t sign an extension at some point during the season. ESPECIALLY if Rip or Tay is traded

Did the Pistons just hired a coach or not? I didn’t care for Saunders that much, but I can honestly say that the AI and Rip problems wouldn’t even existed last season,if he was the coach last year.

So I’m not buying that Rip and BG playing together, can’t be a team nightmare, because if that’s the case do we trade Stuckey because the AI and Stuckey duel looked awful.

Exactly right, Gabe.

I mean, fellas, think about it:

The cap could shrink to 50-53 million next season! And we’ve got 20 mil. invested in SG’s, neither of whom will be All-Stars if on the same roster.

Rip has become redundant, not because his game is worthless, but because he’s older, and his contract just ain’t that great.

by brgulker on Jul 9, 2009 11:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

For what it’s worth, the Pistons would still have the MLE (if the Pistons are less than about 5.8mil under the cap) to use next year.

This could field a lot if the cap goes down and the teams under the cap have less money (and less inclination) to overbid for players.

We get the MLE if we’re at the cap (and above the cap as well, right?), too.

5.8 will also vary based on the cap, I think… because I think that total is a relagive % to what the cap actually is. Might be wrong about that part, though.

5.8 mil. will get your more next summer than this summer, that’s for sure. But will 5.8 mil (it will be less than that next summer) be enough to get us a legit Center? Color me skeptical.

by brgulker on Jul 9, 2009 12:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

@Chaosmonger

That trade scenario might be the best I’ve seen yet. Most people on the Bobcats board don’t like the Rip/Okafor trade because they feel their biggest need is post scoring. Utah needs a good SG. Boozer can score down low for the Cats. And we get our man. Problem is, this needs to happen soon, like ASAP, because if the Jazz let Milsap go to the Blazers (as it’s starting to look like) then there will be no way they let go of Boozer.
