As an FYI

Just about everybody picks up Joel Przybilla, he’s a steal at only 2pts

Not bad but I would swap Mayo for Gordon (one less point, not much of a drop off. Same potential, as well) and get a better center. Przybilla isn’t nearly good enough and has very little upside. You could get Gasol or Noah instead. I originally was taking Gordon but, I too, decided to upgrade at center from Robin Lopez to Gasol and Andersen

I like Mayo alot

He’s more of a scorer than Gordon is and I think the sky is the limit with his potential. I think eventually Mayo and Griffin will be the best guys on the team, if they aren’t already.

You’ve got Griffin, Lewis, and freaking Derrick Rose. Right there is 60 points a night EASY, probably upwards of 75 a night from those three alone. I would drop Mayo for Gordon and use the point you would gain to upgrade to Gasol. Also, as I pointed out below, forget about Pachulia. Go for Hibbert. More potential, amazing per-36 numbers, and he is 3 inches taller.

The main problem I see

Is there isn’t really a go-to scorer. Courtney Lee won’t put up 30 pts anytime soon. Tay isn’t consistent enough, Tyson is a defender, and Boris is a distributor. When your best scorer is your PG you might have a problem.

I would either replace Tay with Rudy Gay (5) or replace Tay with Josh Howard/Luol Deng (4) and replace Lee with another scorer like Eric Gordon (4) or Jason Richardson (4)

Why not replace Tayshaun (a 5) with Durant (a 6) and swap Chandler (a 4) for Andersen (a 3). Have Andersen come off the bench and Gasol start. Chandler isn’t going to get any better and unless he has an elite point guard passing to him, he’s not so great (which we will see this season with him in Charlotte, I am sure). You lose a bit of size by doing this but you gain back energy (and lots of it), a team personality, something to draw fans in (no one in the league can draw fans in like the Birdman), and you get way more defense than Chandler’s fragile body can give you.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 13, 2009 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thing about Anderson

You call him the best defender in the game, but he’s really the best weakside defender in the league. Don’t get me wrong, i love the guy. But he gets overpowered by the stronger centers in the league, and he isn’t good one on one. Look at Amare Stoudemire, also an excellent weakside defender. But put him 1 on 1 against a great offensive threat and he gets torched. Same with Anderson which makes me question his ability to be a starting Center in the league. Off the bench however, he’s an excellent option, but there are other viable options for 2 pts which would give you a better starting lineup.

by detpistons3 on Aug 14, 2009 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s got Marc Gasol. That right there is your starter. Have Andersen be the energy off the bench. But you are right, Andersen isn’t great on-ball but he can still lock down the middle of pretty much every team in the league. He just wouldn’t be able to take on an elite big man such Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Shaq (I am surprised to be saying his name at his age), Garnett, Duncan, or Bosh. He would be a good enough defensive presence against half the league at least.

One big problem though is that Diaw is more of a small forward than a power forward. He’s only 6’8. I mean… there are shooting guards that tall.

Aaron Brooks (3)
Marquis Daniels (3)
Kevin Durant (6)
Blake Griffin (5)
Marc Gasol (3)

Will Bynum (2)
Bruce Bowen (2)
Chris Anderson (3)

The only one I am unhappy with is Aaron Brooks. He showed promise against the Lakers last year but he could end up being a bust.

Maruis Daniels is capable of averaging 12-15 points a night. Durant is going to be the scoring leader for years to come (and is a point less than Lebron). Griffin is a gamble but you can’t really go wrong with him either.

Anderson is energy off the bench plus one of the best defensive presences in the league right now. Bowen is a washup but a good mentor and a proven winner throughout his career and every young team needs a good veteran leader (plus he is still capable of guarding second tier guards in the league).

Gasol is a good big man with tremendous upside who could very easily evolve into what his brother is now. Bynum… I like Bynum. He’s a good passer and a strong point guard off the bench.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 12, 2009 10:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I would

Replace Brooks with Russel Westbrook, his numbers were guady for a rookie PG. 15.3 pts 5.3 ast 4.9 rebs on a team with not many options. He’s an excellent value pick for only 3 pts.

Also

Replace Marquis Daniels with Trevor Ariza, I like Daniels but I Ariza can be better than him as we’ve seen in the playoffs. He’s no slouch on defense either.

We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne

by detpistons3 on Aug 13, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not a fan of Ariza, really. Ariza wants to be a star, I think, and seems to have the go to match. With Daniels, you have a lowkey guard who is able to put up 20 a night if needed. But with Durant playing the 3 (and likely to average 25 or better for his career from the looks of it) and Griffin at the 4, he wouldn’t need to be such a huge player. Daniels is a better passer than Ariza and more of a team oriented player, I think.

Defense wise, I think Daniels might be a bit faster but you’ve got Durant and Griffin playing in the middle along with Gasol and Andersen (who is one of the best defenders in the league). You’d be hard pressed to drive to the basket with 3 of those 4 clogging the middle at all times. Plus you have Bowen who is definitely not a slouch on defense either (not what he used to be but still pretty good for someone coming off the bench)

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 13, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought about Westbrook but didn’t think to look up his numbers. He would be a better pg. Like I said, the only one I didn’t like in that lineup was Brooks. Westbrook seems to be a good replacement for him.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 13, 2009 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

C- M. Gasol (3)
PF – Blake Griffin (5)
SF – Lebron James (7)
SG – Eric Gordon (4)
PG – Will Bynum (2)

Bench
G – Ty Lawson (2)
F – Dejuan Blair (2)
C – Joel Przybylla (2)

This team might not contend right away, but with the oldest player in the starting lineup being 25 and 2 rookies on the bench, this team would be dominant in the future. Lebron is a steal at 7 and would make any team an instant contender and I like Gasoland Gordon, and Blake Griffin should be a future star. Bynum is a stretch, but he is a good player and solid defender. He would eventually move to the bench once Ty Lawson has gotten some experience.

by cmich hax on Aug 13, 2009 7:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Out of pure hatred for Cleveland and Lebron James, I couldn’t put him on my team. That and I’d rather spread the offense around and I don’t think ’Melo needs the ball as much as LJ does.

by Avalanche318 on Aug 13, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed...

but we’re Pistons fans, of course we hate Lebron or at least we hate playing against him. If he was a Piston though, we would love him. The guy is a beast that can do everything IMO he’s by far the best player in basketball. I actually don’t see him as a ball hog, and with Bynum as my point I wouldn’t mind having someone else with ball handling skills.

by cmich hax on Aug 13, 2009 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree with you. Lebron is easily the best player in the league. Only one player is up there with him (Kobe) and three others are just a step behind him (Wade, Carmelo, and Durant). You really can’t go wrong with Lebron. Of course, you could take Durant for one point less and get the guy who is probably going to lead the league in scoring the next decade. And then you could upgrade your point guard to Westbrook, Brooks, and Conley.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 13, 2009 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like that option

You then have 2 of the brightest young talents in the league and 2 young guys that project to be stars. The only weakness is the point guard position, I don’t like Ty Lawson as the up-and-coming point guard and he’s basically a clone of WIll Bynum. It doesn’t help having 2 of the same type of player on your team.

We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne

by detpistons3 on Aug 14, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You do what I said and upgrade to Westbrook instead of either Lawson or Bynum. Bynum and Lawson will be both be great back up point guards (and I think Bynum has the potential to be a starter) and realistically, Westbrook would be playing 35 minutes a game at least. Bynum or Lawson scrapping less than 15 a night isn’t really that bad.

Agreed...

but I ran out of points! I figure Lebron doesn’t need much backup anyway. And I would switch out Blair but I saw him at Pitt and I loved his physical game. He could turn out to be a 2nd round steal and I’d take a gamble on him for 2 points.

I was implying that you switch out Blair

but you’re right, LBJ will play around 40 minutes so you really don’t have much to worry about.

Decided to have another go at it. I’m liking this quite a bit. It’s a larger frontcourt now with Hibbert in there and a quicker backcourt with Gordon, Nelson, and Lawson (over Brooks Daniels, and Bynum).

By the way, Brook Lopez is a good center but there is no way he is a 5. (Besides, if he was a 4, I could have Rose at the point instead of Nelson. lol)

Jameer Nelson (4)
Eric Gordon (4)
Trevor Ariza (3)
Blake Griffin (5)
Brook Lopez (5)

Roy Hibbert (2)

Good looking team

The name’s aren’t huge, but I think the team would gel excellently. Jameer Nelson will get everyone the ball, Gordon and Blake are the main scorers. If one of them are off, Trevor Ariza can pick up the slack, otherwise he’ll be the defender/open 3 guy. Brook will get the garbage points and play solid D. I would get DJ Augustin rather than Ty Lawson. More potential and he’s more of a proven talent. Joel Przybilla is a must IMO, but if you’d rather go with youth, why not Javale Mcgee? He’s only 21 and his per 36 minute stats are awesome.

We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne

by detpistons3 on Aug 13, 2009 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t like Przybilla, honestly. He’s always seemed to underachieve and not live up to what he is capable of. And he’s not a core player. If I am starting a franchise, I want every player out there to be role players with the potential to become stars. I want to build from within. Przybilla isn’t going to get any better.

As for McGee, I’ve never been a fan of per-36 minute averages. But if you must, here are the per-36 averages for McGee and Hibbert. (points, blocks, rebounds, assists, steals)
McGee: 15.3 ppg, 2.36 bpg, 9.2 rpg, .7 apg, and .94 spg
Hibbert: 17.8 ppg, 2.75 bpg, 8.8 rpg, 1.8 apg, and .75 spg

Hibbert averages more points, more blocks, more assists and is barely beat in steals and rebounds. He managed to start more than half of the games last season while McGee started just 14 on a team whose starting centers were Etan Thomas and Andray Blatche. Not to mention Hibbert is 2 inches taller and graduated with a bachelor’s from Georgetown meaning that not only is he smart on the court but he is smart off it as well (Georgetown isn’t exactly an easy school).

McGee played small forward in college but has been moved to center in the NBA because of his height. He’s built like Tayshaun Prince. He only played two years in college (I am one of the people who is hoping that they raise the age requirement another year so you have to play two years in college before going into the NBA) compared to Hibbert’s 4. And Hibbert was also named a preseason All American a few years ago.

Honestly, Hibbert may be the best sleeper pick in the entire list. If he played 36-40 a night and was able to consistently put up the numbers he is already putting up, he would be putting up Kevin Garnett numbers (in his prime too). That’s why I hate per-36 though. It’s impossible to tell if a guy like Hibbert puts up such great numbers because he only plays 14 minutes a night or if he would be able to put up 7 points every 14 minutes.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 13, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right

I didn’t look up Hibbert’s numbers and frankly, he flew under the radar for me. Forget the McGee replacement. Hibbert is good.

(5) Ben Gordon – SG
(3) Andre Nocioni – SF
(6) Kevin Garnett – PF
(3) Gortat – C

Bench
(2) Roy Hibbert
(3) Wilson Chandler
(2) Mike Miller

by Beeman18 on Aug 13, 2009 11:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Eh… I really don’t think Gortat would make a good starter in this league. He’s an excellent backup for Howard but I don’t think he could be a good enough anchor in the middle for 35-40 minutes a game.

Also, having Miller is redundant. All he is good for is three pointers. You have a 40%+ three point shooter already in Gordon. Might as well use those points on a backup for Westbrook.

By the way, it was a bit surprising to see Nocioni on your roster. Nothing against the guy, just not who I would expect someone to want to build a franchise with. lol

I would try to fit Battier in there. Possible for Nocioni

by detpistons3 on Aug 14, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Battier and Garnett would make one hell of a defensive force in the front court. Battier is probably the best on ball defender in the league (and the only person in the league capable of shutting down Kobe or Lebron). Get someone different at center, someone who has a 8-9 ppg scoring touch and is big on blocks (someone capable of doing 4 a night would be nice. Blocks are Garnett’s lone weak point from what I remember) and you would have a front court to be reckoned with.

Not going to explain my choices really, if you’re smart you can evaluate why I did them. little bit

had him on my fantasy team last year. he is a beast and put up freakish statistics in summer league and he is prob gonna give about 15pts 10 reb a game this year easily. he was putting up similar stats the last quarter of the year the past season and he is young and continuously developing.

Yeah

He benefits alot from Nellie’s system, I really like your second team though. Westbrook and Hamilton are a good backcourt, Shard will knock down 3s, and Jefferson is a straight up beast. If Randolph plays well that’s a sick squad. I would replace Yi Jianlian with D.J Augustin though

You broke the rules AND you managed to put together a team that wouldn’t do crap. You have two superstars and absolutely no one to back them up. Also, read my post a little above about McGhee. You definitely want to take Hibbert over him

You have one more point available if your point totals posted match up with the list. Upgrade Perkins for sure. Also… why do you have two backup point guards?

Shane Battier – 3
Lamarcus Aldridge – 5
Kendrick Perkins – 3

DJ Augustine – 2
Leon Powe – 2

Anthony parker

is a pretty weak starting SG, and Bibby’s not much of a distributor. KG and Lebron will be devastating though

And Doc Rivers

is a joke. There’s about 10 other coaches that are better than him

As I suggested earlier to someone else, drop Lebron for Durant. Then you can upgrade your SG. I’d also get rid of Bibby. He’s a shooting guard to small to play shooting guard so he has to play PG.

Dunno

Lebron is kind of irreplaceable, even for Durant. Durant is going to be a superstar for years to come, don’t get me wrong. He’s going to be close to Wade. But Lebron is on another level, as is Kobe.

I agree. He completely is. But you get Durant who looks like he will be averaging 30 points a night for the next 10-15 years and who is only 20 years old (21 in a month) and are able to pick up a shooting guard who can actually play.

In this imaginary 8 player per team league.. this team would be a bottom feeder. Lebron and Garnett are great but Bibby is hardly a point guard. Parker is a joke of a starting shooting guard. Mike Miller is good for threes and that’s it and even that has been absent since he came to Minnesota. They wouldn’t contend for a championship and the team would be absolutely screwed in two or three years when Garnett retires. You take Durant and upgrade Parker to Al Thornton, Trevor Ariza, or Marquis Daniels and you get a HUGE upgrade over Parker and you have a good young player that could develop into an all star to play alongside Lebron when Garnett goes.

Hmm
Mike Miller is good for threes and that’s it and even that has been absent since he came to Minnesota

This is wrong, Miller gets the reputation of being a 3pt specialist and nothing else because that’s what most white wing players are (see Jason Kapono and Mike Dunleavy). But he’s actually a versatile wing that can do alot of things. Check the stats:

10 pts on 48% shooting, 1.2 threes on 37% shooting, 6.6 rebs, 4.5 ast .4 stl, .4 blks
While getting 32 minutes a game. His numbers took a big hit when he moved to Minny where getting aclimated to a new system undoubtedly hurt his production. In Memphis he put up 16 pts 7 rebs and 4 asts per night. Miller is a great option to have off the bench (he actually started 47 games in Min and every game in Memphis). And at 2 pts, who else would you take?

Is everyone signed up for PASPN?

Take all this great energy and put it into the league. It’ll be a lot of fun.
