15 Back to backs...
not too bad… I don’t understand why they do so many back to backs when there are lags in the season where you’re off for 4 days.

Finally something I can get pumped about!
I don’t think I’ve done a very good job so far hiding my dissapointment with this off season. This, however, I like…a lot actually!
Starting the season against Memphis, OK City, and Milwaukee? We should know right off the bat if this team is any good by the margin of victory in those three games.
They do play some good teams early on, but I don’t see a sure-fire LOSS on the schedule until mid-November when they have to go into LA. That doesn’t mean I think they’ll win their first 10 games, but if this team is any good they should come in with a 7-3 record. That kind of Hot start could avoid the complete disaster waiting for them on the the LA, Portland, Phoenix, Utah trip (only to come home to Cleveland). I think this will be the last point in the season this team will be below the .500 mark. They will probably hit a rough patch or two the rest of the way (3 or 4 game losing streaks), but I think this schedule works out very favorably for the Pistons.
I know I’ve been pessimistic, but this schedule makes me think they could win 50 games…and if other teams aren’t doing so well (…Toronto…), maybe they really would look to trade a player that could make the difference down the stretch.
As much as I haven’t been a fan of this off season, I sure would like our chances if April rolls around and this team is looking at 50 wins with a lineup like Stuckey, Gordon, Tay, CV31, and Bosh. Again, those first ten games should tell us all we need to know about what this team is made of…but it’s hard not to like the way that schedule plays out.

I like your newfound optimism
I think you’re right in that the we’ll see what this team is made of, but I don’t know if we should look at the margin of victories. I’d say worry about getting W’s first and as the team continues to mesh, we can start wondering why they aren’t beating the lesser teams of the East by more points.

71-165
is the combined record of those first three teams, one of which we took arguably their second best player from. Maybe the overall point margin isn’t going to show a complete blowout, but those three games should not even be close if this team is really any kind of good. I like their chances at home against Orlando coming off what should be three easy victories to start the season, and a 4-0 start could bring enough momentum into Toronto for a 5-0 start (especially if one of those wins comes against the defending Eastern Conference Champs). Philly and Charlotte at home shouldn’t pose much of a threat, and if they get in to a shootout in Washington they can certainly pull that game off as well. Dallas isn’t the same team they were a couple of years ago, and they aren’t nearly as good on the road as they are at home.
Again, I don’t foresee this team winning those first 10 games, but I think if this team is any good they should finish 6-4 at worst and probably should be 7-3 after those first three gimmies. Anyway, even with what I believe to be a defense deficient team, those first three games should still be massacres.

Now it's my turn
4 of Detroit’s first 6 games are away games, which can be difficult. And it’ll take time for this team to gel so I don’t think we’ll blow out teams right off the bat.

While I certainly don't
underestimate the importance of team chemistry (and I still think this team has a potential nightmare on their hands with Gordon and Rip on the same team), my point was that if this team is really as good as a lot people seem to think they will be they should have no problem in those first three games and winning early can go a long ways to develop chemistry.
If this team loses any of those first three, then they are NOT a good basketball team…simple as that. If by some aweful turn of events they lose more than one of those first three, this whole thing will unravel way before it has a chance to get going. If last year’s team had chemistry problems, imagine the finger pointing and second guessing that will be going on in that locker room if this team starts 1-5 (which I think will happen if they don’t start off hot).

Premature Prediction
Those first 10 games will tell me everything I need to know about this team:
7-3 (or better): The team finishes with 50+ wins this year, and has a legitimate chance of trading for a player to help them get back to Championship caliber by next season.
6-4 : The team finishes above .500 and probably a four seed. They win the first playoff series with home court advantage, but get bounced easily by either Boston or Cleveland in the second round.
5-5 : The team finishes below .500 and ends up playing Orland, Boston, or Cleveland in the first round losing in 5 games.
4-6 : The team wins just enough, and the East is just weak enough at the bottom for this team to sneak into the playoffs. They get swept in the first round.
3-7 (or worse): Makes a run at the eight seed late in the season before a mysterious injury happens to inflict one of their starters, they trade another starter to a contender and hope to re-start the rebuilding process in the off season (this time with a lottery pick). Kuester doesn’t finish the season as the head coach, and Joe D will “resign” as Pistons GM.
For the record, I really think this team goes 6-4 at worst!

The 6-4 record sounds accurate
And it sounds most like the Carlisle era. We kept getting ousted by the Pacers which led to the Rasheed Wallace trade. Although I disagree with your declaration that 10 games can determine where a team is headed. A lot of things can happen in 72 games. Those first 10 games are almost still part of the preseason. For me, the January-March games tell the most. The basketball season is a grind, and if you can get a team that still plays at a high level in the dreary February days when most players are just waiting for the playoffs start, that’s how you know you have something special. Boston was like that 2 years ago, and they went on to a championship. In the beggining of the season, players are excited for a fresh start, in the end of the season, players are gearing up for a playoff run. It’s the middle of the season that tells the most about how bad a team wants it. If we can play at a high level in the month of February (in which some of our toughest games are) I think we can be something special. I think the likeliest route will we will be one of those teams that never goes away, kind of like the Houston Rockets. Most don’t count them in for a championship run, but they always give teams a good battle before getting ousted.

...
It seems like we have FAR less Nationally Televised games than in the previous seasons… Not surprising though.

Just four
compared to 29 over the last two seasons, so a huge drop off. Apparently ABC is showing less games this season, though.
