Report: Big Ben is back

From the AP:

A person with knowledge of the deal says Ben Wallace is coming back to the Detroit Pistons.

Wallace will receive a $1.3 million, one-year deal, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the contract has not been signed. Wallace is expected to do that early next week.

[...] Wallace will be a familiar face for a team in the midst of big changes. He will recognize former Cavaliers assistant John Kuester, who last month became Detroit's sixth head coach in the past 10 years.

Of course, Wallace recognized Kuester when he arrived in Cleveland from Kuester's time on Larry Brown's bench in 2004, but that's neither here nor there.

Welcome back, Big Ben!

Hooray…….I think?

by Garrett on Aug 7, 2009 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

Well at least we’ll have one defensive player, even he only plays 5 minutes a game-

by Rob K on Aug 7, 2009 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

I think this will have more of an impact in the lockerroom than on the court.

For the youngsters to see a guy who has worked on what he does best and not what he doesn’t and his attitude, this will be good. Good signing and welcome back Ben.

Big Ben at 1.3M is much better then Big Ben at 16M. Welcome back.

Time to grow back the fro, big fella.

by TDP on Aug 7, 2009 2:57 PM CDT reply actions

I’m happy.

by Quick Darshan on Aug 7, 2009 2:59 PM CDT reply actions

Stuckey will not be wearing 3?

by TDP on Aug 7, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

I’m just glad i can wear 50% of my pistons paraphernalia again!

by Brett on Aug 7, 2009 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

Can’t say I didn’t see this happening…but it’s almost surreal.

And I’ve made this point awhile back (a year ago or so), if Big Ben ever came back would the Pistons’ organization retire #3?

And what would they do with Rodney Stuckey?

Here was my suggestion: If Rodney Stuckey ever became that player where he was notable to have his jersey retired (long-time down the round), the Pistons could retire both Stuckey and Wallace together with the same number. Like the Lions did with Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, and Lem Barney with the #20.

by Diablo on Aug 7, 2009 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah Diablo, it’s not all that uncommon. The Cubs retired #31 earlier this year for both Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux.

by TDP on Aug 7, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

Sure, I’d take him back at $1.3 million. I don’t think we could have gotten a better player with that money and seeing Big Ben in the right uniform again will be nice.

by SadPanda on Aug 7, 2009 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

But it would be weird to see Big Ben wearing Pistons’ Jersey without the #3.

by Diablo on Aug 7, 2009 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

I wonder when langolis’ next piece is coming about how the stones want to run ben at point to take advantage of mismatches.

by Craig on Aug 7, 2009 3:21 PM CDT reply actions

Stuckey will most definitely give up the #3 jersey. Hell, he would have let Iverson have it last season had it been possible.

by TDP on Aug 7, 2009 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

lol @ craig… so true

by mannie32 on Aug 7, 2009 3:34 PM CDT reply actions

What the hell is Dumars thinking giving Stuckey 3 and Iverson 1 anyways? I’m not so sure Ben will take 3 back, even if it’s offered, but whatever.

Glad to see him back, if only for nostalgia sake. And now I can finally stop calling him The Traitor hehe

by Brad Bice on Aug 7, 2009 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Ben wore #30 when he was in Washington and #4 in Orlando and with the Cavs last season. Since wearing Pistons #4 is out of the question, it sure would be funny for him to take That Other Wallace’s number. No need to make new jerseys.

by TDP on Aug 7, 2009 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

got a quiick update on the stuckey #3 situation for you… he implies he’s looking for a new number on his twitter page

http://twitter.com/RodneyStuckey3 – “lol Looks like I got to find a new # Welcome back 2 Detroit Big Ben!”

by mannie32 on Aug 7, 2009 4:14 PM CDT reply actions

I’m pretty sure that’s NOT the real Rodney Stuckey. That account hasn’t been verified.

by PistonsNation.com on Aug 7, 2009 4:17 PM CDT reply actions

BEST NEWS EVER! Welcome back Ben. You are a Piston at heart. Man I cannot wait till the new season. WOW. Joe D has done everything to make this team better again. Now go win the Championship guys.

by HB on Aug 7, 2009 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

Bill Higgins said Stuck’s #3 was a tribute to D.Wade chlamydia havin ass. Yo, kill that shit. If that’s true, give it to Ben, and start being your own man, dammit

Ben, put your hard hat on and grab your lunchbox and climb in that poorly-rendered dodge viper they’d put up during commercials. Detroit. Detroit.

by Skylar on Aug 7, 2009 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

Welcome home Ben, we missed you.

by Laughton on Aug 7, 2009 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

Now I really do think the Pistons are going to give people match up problems.Everybody on the roster will be able to play 2-3 different positions.I like them adding Ben maybe teach a young nucleus how to play team defense and he is also going to be a great teacher in practice. If all there Rookies can give them a contribution of 15-points and 7rebounds or steals(all together) every night thats very scary but its a (Big IF).But its stil the off-season we will see when the season starts how things come together….

by The Fan on Aug 7, 2009 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Pumped to see the unspoken impact this will have on the swagger of Rip and Tayshaun. They lost Chauncey, but the other core piece is now with them again.

Same impact.

by prophecy_projectz on Aug 8, 2009 8:20 AM CDT reply actions

All of you people are crazy. I dont care if he does well here. He is and always will be a sellout in my opinion.

by Ronnie D. on Aug 8, 2009 8:43 AM CDT reply actions

$1.3 is parking change to a former NBA All-Star and Title holder, so he’s a former sellout. It’s cool man. Let it go.

by Skylar on Aug 8, 2009 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

I realize that most people think this is just a token signing, thinking that Ben’s impact will only be in the locker room.

But Ben was having a very good season season before he broke his leg last year. If he can return to something close to that form and give us 15-20 minutes per game, he might be able to give us a serious contribution on the floor as well.

by brgulker on Aug 8, 2009 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

I smell CHAMPIONSHIP!

Now when is LB coming back? Kuester makes a fine assistant. Kind of like Phil Jackson coming back to the Lakers and Rambis and Hamblin being relegated to assistant jobs.

by jbstork on Aug 8, 2009 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry, Ronnie D, for remembering Pistons history and welcoming back one of the best players and ambassadors for the Detroit Pistons in their history.

by Cody on Aug 8, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

@brgulker, yes he was still a good shot-blocker and above average rebounder (and his rebounding numbers probably would have been higher if he didn’t have Varejao and Ilgauskas next to him).

I’d like to see Ben play 2 six-minute rotations where he just goes balls out. Hell, maybe even starting the game and the second half to set the tone and show the young guys what Qster will want from them.

Ben’s not a vocal guy, so if he’s going to be a leader/teacher, he’ll need to get on the court even if it’s only for 12 minutes/game.

by Quick Darshan on Aug 8, 2009 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

@QD…i would LOVE to see Ben start the 1st and 3rd quarters. Mason can introduce him every night, AND if he played the first 6 minutes of the 1st and 3rd quarters (with a minute or two in the other quarters possibly), he would be playing alongside Charlie V, who is a perfect fit next to Ben Wallace.

by Cody on Aug 8, 2009 4:05 PM CDT reply actions

I’ve just read about the other Ben, Kuester is quoted as saying Gordon backs up Rip, according to P.N.

cody, plus his bad free throw shooting won’t be a problem (not that Kwame and Maxiell are much better).

I’m sorry but what impact is this corpse gonna have? He was ready to friggin retire before Joe gave him this contract. He is literally gonna be there as a vet locker room presence and a way for the front office to give the fans something to get excited about via nostalgia. This is EXACTLY like the Pippen move in Chicago back in ‘03. It’s just a last stop so he can be remembered fondly in fans minds and they retire his jersey.

First, Pippen cost the Bulls $5,000,000. Ben is costing $1.3 million.

Second, Ben Wallace helps fill a hole this team desperately has: rebounding, shot blocking and interior defense. Even if he only plays 12-15mpg, he’ll help anchor our team’s defense inside and provide man defense that was a big win for Cleveland last season.

Yes, Wallace will be both a vet locker room presence and a point of excitement for fans. But his impact on the morale of Rip/Tay, his instruction on Kwame, Maxiell, Wilcox and even Villanueva— and then his actual defensive presence on the court will help tighten this team more than Pippen could in 2003 with the Bulls.

Did the shitty Bulls need Pippen to fill a role in 2003? Those 23 games he played as a 38-year-old meant nothing. This 34-year-old defensive beast who made Cleveland a better team last year will help a team desperately seeking an identity to gel even if he’s around only for a single season.

I can understand anyone who has beef with Ben for taking the Chicago deal (although I’m glad he took it and we didn’t match). But come on, man— this is a big bright spot for a team who hasn’t even begun constructing it’s new identity. We could definitely use his help.

by Mike Payne on Aug 8, 2009 5:41 PM CDT reply actions

The cable on the elevator broke, and Palace attendance went with it, the shit plummeted. MP makes a good point- After Billups getting fucked off and Iverson pulling the diaperbag bullshit, the fans need something to look forward to.

1.3 million. Worth it. So worth it.

+1

Big Ben is going to help us. I personally think he should get 15-20 per night … others think less. Only time will tell how many minutes he’s going to be capable of.

I’ve been wondering lately what our last few seasons would have looked like had we matched Chicago’s offer and not extended Rip. I’m not saying we should have done that … just curious what might have been.
