Allen Iverson signs with Grizzlies, tweets AI
# God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career. I met with Mr. Heinsley, Chris Wallace and my next head coach Lionel Hollins
# I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them.
I totally see this working out.
Added bonus: now the Pistons can finally remove AI from their roster page.

removes OJ Mayo from my list of desired fantasy hoops players for 2009-10

Yeah, that’s going to be one of the most awful to watch, disastrous teams ever.
AI/Mayo/Gay/Randolph/Thabeet… Wow. That line-up is just… wow.
Also, I feel bad for Mike Conley and Marc Gasol. Last season both quietly showed they’re good enough to be rotation players on playoff teams, except they have the misfortune of being on the Grizzlies, who scoff at non-flashy efficiency and much prefer the high volume inefficiency of the AI’s, Mayo’s, Gay’s, and Randolph’s of the world.

The Grizzlies are going to be mizzerable, but they’ll surely sell ticketzz… or something. Fiversons!

Can we put together some type of deal to pry Gasol Jr. from the Grizz? He’d look real good at the center spot for us with this new blood lineup.

@Rob G: Speaking of, it seems like a good point to revisit some hilarious predictions: here and here.
by Matt Watson on Sep 9, 2009 12:17 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
OJ mayo still thinks he is a point guard. he’s probably wrong, but he’s tall enough that they could start him at the point with AI at the 2 and cross-match on defense.
I second joel’s assessment that the wrong gasol (not to be confused with the wrong dajuan) does not suck. thabeet is probably light-years away from contributing, which leaves the grizz with gasol, steven hunter, and something called a hamed haddadi to play center. I wouldn’t expect them to trade gasol given their circumstances.
by Scott on Sep 9, 2009 12:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
@MW The second one is the best so far. Since AI is going to the “contenders” down in Memphis, I’d like to reiterate a comment I made earlier this year. Just replace “Clippers” with “Grizzlies.”
by Rob G on Sep 9, 2009 12:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If Thabeet were white, we’d be comparing him to Shawn Bradley. As it stands, he’s the black Shawn Bradley.
On the bright side, the NBA can finally retire that dated clip of Muggsy Bogues standing alongside Manute Bol during the national anthem.

HA: “Matt Watson just doesn’t have a particular good grasp on hoops.” That was also quite good. Bet you chuckle when you read that.
by Rob G on Sep 9, 2009 12:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Awesome links, Matt. This is clearly poetic justice:
Matt Watson: "there’s a big part of me that won’t be surprised if he gets insulted at the offers that do trickle in and decides to simply call it a career."
Petey: The sad thing is that Matt Watson is going to be just as clueless about Iverson at the end of the year as he was at the beginning.
Suck it, Petey.

A few thoughts about this dandy Tweet:
God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career. I met with Mr. Heinsley, Chris Wallace and my next head coach Lionel Hollins
1) Why does God hate Memphis so much?
2) Memphis is the new Sodom and Gomorrah.
3) Memphis: Where God hates you happens.
4) If God also chose Detroit last year, then I’m mad at God.

Someone else tweeted the following, which I thought was clever:
“Some Memphis fan is destined to create a blog called ‘God Chose Memphis,’ right?”

“Any possession dominated by Randolph or Iverson is a play where Gay, Mayo, Conley or Gasol miss an opportunity to improve. Meanwhile, Randolph, Gay, Mayo and Iverson were all, last season, in the NBA’s top 75 in using possessions.”
-From ESPN’s take on Iverson to Memphis.
Bynum, CV31, Rip, BG, and Stuckey were all in the top 50, FWIW. I think this will all work out better than worse, I’m just sayin’.

Yes, I do. Thats why I said I wasn’t using it as ammunition against the team. Just interesting to note. Fortunately, BG and Bynum are coming off the bench. That will help.

except from an article on NBA.com
Warkentien, who was named NBA Executive of the Year primarily for stealing Billups away from the Pistons, sold a stock that was very high and then it plummeted. It figured Iverson went to Detroit, where his stock soon was at the level of General Motor’s.
So not only do they have low expectations for us, they are mocking us. I dont know which rattles me the most.

Since whoever takes the ball upcourt won’t be passing (knowing he’d never get it back), how will they decide who takes the ball out after made baskets? Rock-paper-scissors? A fistfight?
Also, what’s the over/under on how many games Lionel Hollins lasts until he checks into a mental institution (or at least turns into Don Nelson)? 15? 20?

Which will be great?
Iverson’s ppg OR Grizzlies win total?
That is a tough call.
by brgulker on Sep 10, 2009 9:19 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I say 28 wins. That’s my prediction. I think they’ll average around 104ppg and give up around 108. Gay demands to be traded during or immediately after the season. Mayo doesn’t, but only because he’s getting his ass out of there as soon as his rookie deal’s up (you know he’s wishing the Heat would’ve just taken him instead of Beasley— like they should have).
by Joel on Sep 10, 2009 9:26 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
@brgulker
Grizzlies win total. For sure. I don’t know if Iverson sniffs 20ppg— there just aren’t enough shots for someone who can’t shoot to average 20, even if he’s the primary ball-handler.
by Joel on Sep 10, 2009 9:27 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
“Iverson’s ppg OR Grizzlies win total”
Definitely the wins but not by much…well…
I honestly think AI will only average around 18-15 ppg and the Griz will get about 25-28 wins this year.

It was a poor choice of phrase on my part. I was just trying to say that he has enough shit on his plate now…rightfully so. Karma is in full effect.
He’ll probably retire not being apart of another winning franchise, he’ll never see the playoffs again, no team worth mentioning wanted him, he signed for $3 million, and his ego took a huge hit when reality checked in.

Grizzlies’ Iverson calls this year ‘so personal’ – and this is different from what year?
Thursday Mini-Bullets at ESPN has a link where somebody projects that the Griz could be the first team in NBA history to average less than 20 assists per game . . . as a TEAM!!
Who will have more assists? D. Will or the Grizz?
Let’s look at the bright side . .
Moving on, I can’t believe Hiesley thinks this guy is going to help show his young team how to “do it right.” He’d be better off spending the money he’s paying Iverson and buying tickets and giving them to the Boys & Girls Clubs. At worst he’d get some brownie points from God.
Basketball is a game of “keep away.” Very rarely is it on the same team with your teammates.
Remember when Kevin McHale was referred to as the “Black Hole?” This is going to be a team of them.
Hell, if I were on the team, I just might foul my guy so during the dead ball I could take it from him and know what it felt like.
Did I mention the bright side?
by MarkButter in SoCal on Sep 10, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
And I forgot to mention, even with paycuts and hard economic times, I just might get NBA PASS just to watch Memphis visit Det and hear what AI gets.

the bright side is that they will be way under the cap in the summer of 2011, when Z-bo and jaric come off the books, and mayo and thabeet are still on their rookie deals. of course, by then, rudy gay will already have demanded a trade and left town, and mike conley might be in jail for strangling AI. also, the team will probably have gone bankrupt or moved to seattle.
wait, I didn’t find the bright side either.

Totally random half-anecdote: I was watching a music station the other day, and the commentator guy inbetween videos often tells random pop culture facts. I was doing some work and was only half-listening, but I’m almost positive he told a story about Larry Bird hating Bill Laimbeer so much that he’d try to leave a mushroom tattoo on the TV screen when he appeared. I looked up from my laptop and was like, “Whaaaa? Did he just say…? Really?” Maybe I should try to find evidence of this anecdote online.
by Garrett on Sep 10, 2009 6:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s only half because I’m not 100% sure that’s what the guy said. I think that’s what he said, though, which is a pretty crazy story to tell the kids.

When Chauncey was a UFA, does anyone remember who shot down the rumors he might sign with Memphis?
“We’re not going to Memphis”
-Piper Billups
Now, you have to work pretty hard to run an NBA franchise worse than the Clippers, but Heinsley not only succeeds, he flourishes in it. Why not supply Gay, Mayo, Conley with young talent, and build upon that?
Which reminds me…high roller friend of mine got free tickets an trans to a UFC event in Memphis in Dec. I passed for now, because it’s Memphis. I used to live there when I was younger, you know.
