Morning Shootaround: Helping Haiti, Vote for Midseason Grades, & Dunk Contest Participants
Good morning, DBB.
Pistons may have lost to the Knicks yesterday, but they didn't lose any ground on the 8th seeded Bulls, who lost to the three-manned Warriors (seriously, look at the Warriors box score). In other NBA action of note, Rudy Gay dropped 31 on the Suns last night as Memphis won 125-118! I didn't watch Boston lose to the Mavs, but the C's have now lost three of five. Hopefully, the Pistons can add to their mini-slump tomorrow night. In the ROY watch, Tyreke Evans was ESPN's Top Performer yesterday; he put up 34 points and 7 assists in a losing effort to Charlotte. He's good.
Here are the Pistons related links around the 'net. Enjoy your day, the day after the most depressing day of the year.

Good quote from Posting and Toasting
Some notes about the Pistons: 1. Ben Wallace can still play. 2. Villanueva looked very impressive out there… but when the chips were down he didn’t kill us. Maxiell looked better under pressure. 3. Austin Daye might have a Gallinari type of game if he can hit a three once in a while. 4. Rodney Stuckey took – and missed – a lot of shots. 5. The Pistons don’t appear to have a very balanced team. Glad we’re not them.
Knicks game, total shots and 3-pointers
Looking over the boxscore for yesterday’s Knicks game, I noticed that we took 23 more shots than the Knicks did (96-73). I don’t follow the “total shots” stat closely, but that strikes me as a pretty big discrepancy, especially when the team taking more lost. I mean, Detroit took practically six more shots per quarter, each quarter. Thanks for the rebounds, Big Ben.
So how can you take that many more shots and lose? Well, New York did get four more points on FTs, but two other things stand out. First, we only made three more shots than NY did (they shot for a much higher percentage); second, they were 10-22 for 3-pointers, while we were 0-12. In an 8-point game, the difference in 3-pointers alone made the difference.
This all leads to a pretty obvious conclusion: even when Detroit is healthy, we aren’t the best 3-point shooting team. But we were also missing some of the better 3-point shooters on the team.
I noticed that, too
96 shots is a staggering amount of shots for a Pistons team to take. IIRC, Stuckey took 26 by himself (and made 8, ugh)!
In fairness to Stuckey
To whom was he supposed to pass? Ben had a great offensive game, but he’s not known as an offensive threat. Wilcox has had one good offensive game this year. Jerebko is Mr. Hustle, but gets his points on rebounds and running the floor, not the set offense. Daye has some skills, but he’s a rookie, making his second start at a position that isn’t naturally his.
I don’t know what to think about Stuckey. I get frustrated with his shoot-first attitude as much as the next guy, but when I think of some of the situations he’s been put in, I have some sympathy.
96 shots is a lot to take, though, and I would love to know when the last time a team took 23 more shots than the opposing team and still lost, especially when there wasn’t a huge discrepancy on FT points.
Plus...
He was getting hacked something fierce. I couldn’t believe some of the non-calls and offensive fouls he got.

It wasn't a complaint
As much as it was an observation.
The 8 makes was a gripe … because 8-26 is horrible. I think the 26 is probably a little high, given that CV and Daye were shooting much more efficiently, but at the end of the day, someone has to shoot the ball. And when you field the team that we did, I don’t think anyone’s gonna fault Stuckey for taking them.
Fair enough
8-26 is bad, I agree. I feel for Stuckey, though, because he’s never really had a chance to develop at point guard in anything like a normal situation. Last year was the clusterf**k with Iverson, Curry, and the weird small-ball that had two of the team’s mainstays (Rip and Tay) consistently playing out of position. This year, there have been the zillion injuries that have meant a zillion lineups. And this year and last, Detroit has lacked anything like a consistent post presence in the offense, which makes being a point guard harder. Few situations are ideal, but this mess hasn’t been conducive to Rodney’s development at all.
Warriors 3 man game
I believe that’s 4 men. Biedrins almost had a triple double, with like 9 points, 19 rebounds, and 8 blocks. But the scoring from Magette/Curry/Ellis is impressive
Yeah, good call
I was referring to the scoring totals, but I overlooked Biedrins (8 blocks?!).

I want Biedrins as 'Ston.
Hamilton for Biedrins and Morrow
Now, I couldn’t tell you how that would effect the Warriors. Don Nelson’s been phoning it in since Baron Davis left. But the Pistons get a guy who can rebound and block shots and Morrow is a three shooting machine.
Stuckey/Bynum
Gordon/Morrow
Tayshaun/Daye/Jerebko
Biedrins/Villaneuva/Wilcox
Wallace/Kwame/Wilcox
That’s the line up. Biedrins has got five years left on his contract so we have a center when Ben Wallace retires. Plus, Biedrins won’t be floating around so Villaneuva can do his three shooting thing. Personally I think that Biedrins would actually play defense but he’s got Don “Col. Kurtz” Nelson as his coach and if nobody plays defense, its gonna be kind of hard to get that whole team to turn around and start working hard, especially when that culture of all offense has been instated in your team.
Also, Morrow’s contract expires this year, so that gives us a little more cash to play with. To be honest, who are the Pistons really gonna get when the Miami Heat can sign somebody for the maximum contract? David Lee’s the best shot we’ve got.

If GS would do that deal, it’s an absolute no brainer that makes us instantly competitive.
But … why would GS do that deal?
Who knows, with that team.
What they’re doing isn’t working, and they’ve been having conflict amongst the players, with their coach and in the front office as well for years.
A deal like that is definitely possible in my eyes. I’m no fan of Stephen Jackson, but he was the closest thing to a veteran, locker room presence that franchise had since Baron departed.. they need somebody to replace his scoring and mentor the new blood. Rip sounds perfect. Maggette obviously isn’t doing the trick.
"We’re going to turn this team around 360 degrees." –Jason Kidd
What that guy said
I was just playing off the fact that not only is it the Warriors, but they’re also not the smartest when it comes to trades. But what Skylar said makes sense. It won’t happen though.

A while back I suggested...
Wilcox and Kwame for Biedrins. It would allow them to cut a lot of salary for next year. And considering a good role player like Biedrins is useless to them when they can’t compete for a playoff spot, they might as well cut payroll.

Plus Crawford
Not only has Crawford been awesome off the bench for the Hawks, but he’d be as good as anybody in the Nellieball system, a hell of alot better than Acie Law would be.
If they won’t send Biedrins though, we could try to get Randolph. He’s been less than satisfied with the way things are going around there. In fact, they need to blow that team up in general. Then again, Randolph has a lot of hype.
