Morning Shootaround: How Will Pistons Fans Greet 'Sheed?
Mornin'. Many links today and not many games last night (just two). The Heat trounced Indiana behind Wade's 32 points (18 in the first quarter and he didn't play the fourth). 'Bron-bron & the Cavs beat the Raptors in the other game. /yawn.
Pistons got the Celtics at The Palace tonight. One of us will be by later with the game thread, but until then, hit the links.

Do you guys want 'Sheed back?
Seriously. This guy is so infuriating, between the tantrums that a 12 year old would be ashamed of, the ill advised threes, and the inability to play any help defense when moving his feet is involved, He’s a three launching, three missing hacker whose defensive ability is reduced to him only being able to guard the post. Guys take him off the dribble so easily that I call him “Route 95,” since everyone drives on him. He plays help defense like a giant old tree in a violent windstorm, swinging his arms wildly at drivers instead of either going for blocks or standing straight up and forcing thm to make shots over his very long arms. Wallace’s aversion to playing low post offense makes me sick.
Maybe he will come around, or maybe he’s waiting to turn on the switch for the playoffs,, but so far, he’s been less than inspiring in green. That said, I hope the Piston crowd shows some class and recognizes that he was a big contributor to the team’s for a half a decade. I know that’s a lot to ask of one of the least classy crowds in the NBA, but like ’Sheed actually going into the low post and demanding the ball, miracles happen once in a while.
I know that’s a lot to ask of one of the least classy crowds in the NBA
Well, they kicked out John Green like 6 years ago for life, so that was a big step towards class.
What makes you say they’re one of the least classy crowds?
Personally, I think we’ll hear alot.. Fans aren’t exactly coordinating a sit-out or anything. Boos and Cheers. He was the missing link to our first championship in well over a decade. He also chose to go to maybe the lamest team/coach/owner combo in the league.. and a chief rival.
He deserves whatever he gets. I still love Roscoe and yes, I want ’Sheed back.

Do you say that because our stadium is perpetually filled with bandwagon douchebags wearing Kevin Garnett jerseys who had never watched a game before the Big Three?
Usually, TripleOT, you’re much better at masking your contempt. Go suck a Tommy Point.

And you're usually much better, Mike,
at making a salient point. FYI, The Garden was at near sellout throughout the Gerald Green Era in Boston, when the team was losing 50+ games. The Celtics have the most storied history in basketball, and most of their fans have been on the bandwagon through thick and thin. Of course, the “bandwagon” card is an easy one to play when you don’t have anything else to say.
Regarding the comportment of the Pistons’ crowd, a picture is worth a thousand words.

That was the most disgraceful fan behavior in the history of the league. Even before that, I remember ugly fan behavior behind the Boston bench when the Celtics and Antoine Walker went into Detroit to close out a playoff series in 2002. Maybe the crowd has gotten better. I don’t remember any crowd problems when the Cs went into the Palace and closed out the Pistons again three seasons ago. I guess the crowd was too stunned by Detroit’s monumental second half collapse to really react with anything but stunned silence. If I offended any Pistons fans who are oblivious to the Detroit crowd’s history of boorishness, I apologize. I know you guys are reeling now that your team has fallen off a cliff. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take Detroit as long as it did Boston to turn things around. Celtics-Pistons rivalry is a good one, and Imiss watching the Chauncey-led Pistons teams play in Boston.
Like I said, they kicked John Green out. He’s one guy. Coming onto a Detroit blog and talking about Detroit fans is most definitely a douche move.
Hit the bricks, shit head.

Some loudmouth Celtics fan who ain't from around these parts.

Boos and cheers
I think mostly cheers, though, for a couple of reasons. First, ‘Sheed didn’t leave the way Ben did — for more money. Detroit just chose not to resign him. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame Ben for wanting to get paid, but some — including some posters here — think he was disloyal back then. No such rap on ’Sheed.
Second, sad to say, but we’re not really in a rivalry with Boston at the moment. If this was a couple of years ago, and ’Sheed had gone to the hated Celtics, folks probably would have held that against him. But now I predict that instead of getting heat for switching to a hated rival, he will be more of a reminder of better times.
Having said that, his return won’t be Chauncey-like. Chauncey seemed genuinely sad to leave, and his leaving wasn’t at all voluntary. And folks will recall the downsides of ‘Sheed. I was watching the Celtics play on ESPN the other day, and heard the announcers say, “if only Rasheed could focus more and play down in the post more.” I was a huge ’Sheed fan, and still am in some ways, but I sure don’t miss that stuff. Or the Ts. Seriously, how many Ts has Detroit has this year compared to previous years?
We may not be as competitive as Boston right now, but that shit never dies… I’ll hate the celtics until Garnett hangs ’em up… and the hate will hibernate until they sign another bitchmade fool to be their mouthpiece.

I kept my "I hate Danny Ainge" t-shirt until it was finally too ripped to wear
So I know what you mean.
i dont think celtics fans realize that team was a one and done yet.
too bad that bitch kevin garnett couldnt hold it together last year, that was your last shot to win a title with this group. im glad hes not playing tonite, he would try and pull some asshat move like getting in austin dayes face or something. or trying to punk chucky atkins. thought it would be funny to see him run away from ben wallace.
im glad sheeds gone. who would have thought between him and ben wallace that rasheed would be the wallace who is a shell of his former self. i wouldnt boo him or anything but every time i watch him play for the celts im glad that hes not our problem anymore.

“i wouldnt boo him or anything but every time i watch him play for the celts im glad that hes not our problem anymore.”
This. He was great for us at the time, but overstayed his welcome. And he went to Boston.

He put the Pistons over the hump so they could win a title.
That should never be forgotten. Without Sheed there would be no 2004 ring!
Thank you Sheed.
Who dat? Nobody will remember or care after this week. Go Vikes!
Without Sheed there would be no 2004 ring...but Darko would have ended up a 20/10 player
True story.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
Actually, to be fair, it was the arrival of McDyess that stunted Darko more than anything. Instead of one year on the bench, he was sentenced to three before being shipped out. Not saying I regret the move — McDyess remains one of the classiest players to ever play the game — but Darko’s not completely full of crap when he says the Pistons totally mismanaged his development.
If Darko were every going to be a 20/10 guy, he would have become one elsewhere.
He got drafted by a team with lots of good veteran big men. Tough. He’s had multiple opportunities elsewhere, and he’s never shown anything other than borderline psychosis.
Also, in theory he should have gotten really good by playing against the best in practice, no?

I will always be a Sheed fan and be thankful for what he did in Detroit.
*Except the duration of his stay in a green uniform.
But no, I have no interest in seeing him in a Pistons uniform ever again.
Sheed was the King
of the lame excuses following our repeated failures in the playoffs. Him and Billups always talked about how “we beat ourselves” and were a major component of the flip-the-switch mentality.

But in 'Sheed's semi-defense
I still think the real reason Detroit never got over the hump after 2004 was that we had a weak/thin bench in general and no even semi-decent sub at SF in particular.
Yes, ’Sheed’s one big mistake on defense really hurt us in the 2005 Finals. Of course we would have never sniffed the finals that year without him. But I think lack of a decent bench, more than the “flip the switch” mentality was the problem. I mean, take any of the starting rosters from 2005-08 and add the bench of this year (with the players healthy) — I say we win the title in a walk.
verily
’tis truly a thick and hearty bench.
The Campbell’s Chunky Soup of backup players.
"We’re going to turn this team around 360 degrees." –Jason Kidd
I swear if we had only had Daye and Jerebko in '05-'07
We would have had a significantly better chance of winning it all.
I would agree that the bench was part of the problem.
If we faced some teams with really strong benches.
05: This was probably an issue thanks to foul trouble for our bigs, forcing us to play Prince some minutes at PF.
06: Debatable. Miami had a solid bench, but I think Wade being healthy helped, too.
07: Cavs should have never beaten us. They had no bench, no quality players, they just had LeBron. That was more embarrassing than anything this season has produced.
08: Boston’s bench was very thin thanks to the deals for Garnett and Allen. We had a pretty solid bench between Stuckey, Maxiell (who was actually pretty solid at the time), Ratliff, and some Jarvis Hayes/Walter Herrmann. Yet I remember most the fact that the series was tied 1-1 coming in Detroit, when Boston hadn’t won a single road game, and they destroyed us. Absolutely no effort on the Pistons behalf to stop it. We could have taken control of that series, and we came out in a key game with no effort.
Even with bench additions, I still think this team comes up short because they didn’t have the drive the 2004 team had. Yeah, Rasheed put us over the top, but once he got his ring I think he was satisfied more than anyone else on the roster. Post championship, Billups actually improved his game, as did Rip. Rasheed just kind of coasted.

We'll never no, but. . . .
I don’t agree that it comes down to bench vs. bench. First, even though not all our rivals had super-great benchs, ours really, really sucked. ‘05-’07, at least, we had an unbelievably crappy bench that would regularly get outscored by other even mediocre benchs. This also led to playing the starters — especially Tay, but not just Tay — way too much. I think some of the “flip switching” was just fatigue.
I remember LeBron’s one-man show, and I remember feeling good with Boston coming here tied 1-1. And it’s not all on the bench. But even in ‘08, I didn’t feel good about the bench. Hayes had a terrible playoffs, and much as I love Herrmann’s look, he didn’t produce much either. Again, I think “effort” from the starters might be linked to “fatigue.”
It’s not all one thing or another — ’Sheed had attitude problems, including never being comfortable in the leadership role he was put in during his later years here. And sure, he did coast in various ways. I still say if we had kept Corliss or Okur, we win another ’Ship or two.
i wish i was going to this game
so i could boo. sheed used to be my favorite player, but last season just made me lose all the respect i had for the guy. rip pouted for a while, but he eventually came around and really contributed in the last part of the season. not sheed. i foolishly bought tickets for floor seats against the bucks last year, and it was so frustrating watching sheed in particular just not try at all. CV of course played brilliantly all game long. sheed long overstayed his welcome, in my opinion.
rasheed is doing better starting as a celtic than he has for the pistons the past 3 years
as a starter for boston, rasheed’s getting 14 and 6.5 in 35 minutes…on 46% shooting from the field. he’s also getting to the line more than he did the past 3 years…2 times a game
by don'tworryaboutit on Jan 20, 2010 6:09 PM EST reply actions
How many games has Roscoe started this season though?
Comparing a sample size of at most 20-25 games to a sample size of hundreds isn’t exactly a strong data point…rebounds-wise, Sheed played alongside Ben Wallace vs. Perkins so you’d expect his rebounding numbers to be a little stunted in Detroit.
Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
yea i know only about 7 games but his fg % is up and he gets to the line more

No boos please...
He was the missing link to our 2004 Championship… They didn’t boo Billups when he returned (I think we booed Ben Wallace, but that was understandable, it’s not like Rasheed left for money), so we shouldn’t boo ’Sheed.
