Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Would you do this trade?

Tayshaun Prince, DaJuan Summers and the 2011 First Round Pick for Hasheem Thabeet and Marko Jaric.

THE RATIONALE:  Memphis is probably inclined to hold onto Thabeet for a couple years and see how he develops.  Trading him would be admitting they drafted a bust.  So, they won't give him up for nothing.

Prince, Summers and Jaric are expiring contracts (Summers is included to maintian roster size) so essentially this is Thabeet for the Pistons first round pick.  From the Pistons perspective, there probably aren't any shot-blocking big men available in the draft this year, so rather than draft yet another wing player...  From Memphis's perspective, they have Gasol and Haddadi to back him up so maybe they draft a more pressing need (power forward?).

Well thought out, but I wouldn’t include the pick. While we have a glut of wing players right now, we only have one small forward on contract for next season, so the 2011 first rounder is important. Also, while we’ve looked like a better team across the last nine games, we’re still likely lottery-bound, and if we’re moving Tayshaun and a lottery pick, that package is worth plenty more than Hasheem Thabust.

For Jonas!!

Nope. Thabeet hasn’t shown that he’s worth a 2nd round pick, at least in my view. I’d rather take another gamble in the lottery.

rec'd

I’d totally start her at center, if you know what I mean.

Fuck her, I'd make her ride my pine...

I’d block her shot and run an efficient and effective fast break, culminating in an easy basket at the other end……IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN

Wait a minute….

Fuck no!

What first-round pick next year WOULDN’T be better than Thabeet? Maybe if Z-Bo were involved, but if all we’re getting is Hasheem, then no way.

The reason I brought it up

is because I looked on draftexpress and it didn’t look like there were any quality big men (Donuts Monteczuma not withstanding).

And I really want a shotblocker.

I see where you're coming from

But Thabeet is pretty terrible, and I don’t think that’s ever really going to change. Maybe we could somehow trick Dallas into giving us Tyson Chandler (which, with the way their SF’s are playing, is not inconceivable)?

Right now I want to see roster change at almost any cost, but sometimes I don't if any deal makes sense.

Why give up an expiring contract for more salary in a year where we have to deal with a whole bunch of signings this offseason, I’d rather not like to take a flyer on Thabeet at the potential expense of losing Jerebko or Stuckey.

I’d also agree that we shouldn’t give up the draft pick, or take on what could be “Darko 2.0”.

While we’re at it, we shouldn’t get veteran bigs because our core is young, and we shouldn’t trade for other expiring contracts because it would be redundant to trade Tay for a similar amount of salary relief, and for good measure we should also try to throw in Maxiell for some long term help.

With all that considered, remember if you’re Joe D you also have absolutely no margin for error, so a trade can’t really screw up, it just can’t be a bust.

So yeah, maybe he’s right

I would just say that I would assume for those who want trades that they would want good trades. The question for me is not, "Why no trades?" The question for me is, "If there’s not a good trade, why would I do it?" There was never a trade that made sense for us. It made no sense for us to make a trade if it was not going to be beneficial for us.

Bravo!

(although truthfully, I want some consistency for our team for a while, but Q is driving me NUTS)

I've generally been okay with Q's rotations.

Until I saw that Daye didn’t get a shot at guarding Dirk.

My problem with Q is the offense. I generally prefer a motion office of the kind that Houston and Utah run. Especially since there are no great playmakers on the team.

There’s a lot of offensive talent on the team and the offense seems to be less than the sum of its parts.

in general, the rotations he uses to finish close games are at times laughable. i’m with you on the offense though.

For Jonas!!

I think the one point I'm struggling with is Memphis's admission of failure with the Thabeet pick...

As a team looking for a big, we shouldn’t give a shit if they’re admitting failure by trading him for what he’s worth…which I’d argue is no more than a 2nd rounder and some cap relief (Wilcox?).

Memphis has as good as admitted failure with him anyways given:

1) They played him in the D-League in his rookie season
2) They continue to stack their frontcourt with 7 footers who are all playing ahead of him
