Arenas, Richardson, Turkoglu to Orlando / Carter, Gortat, Pietrus, to Phoenix / Lewis to Washington / UPDATE: Now with more Earl Clark!
"The Orlando Magic have completed a pair of blockbuster trades that will send them Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas and Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson from the Phoenix Suns, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
As a prelude to the trade for Arenas, the Magic have agreed in principle to send guards Vince Carter and Mickael Pietrus, backup center Marcin Gortat, a 2011 first-round pick and $3 million to the Phoenix Suns for Turkoglu and Richardson, sources said.
The Magic also are nearing completion on a deal to send forward Rashard Lewis to the Wizards for Arenas, sources said. No other players or picks will be in that trade."

According to Fanhouse, the Magic also get Earl Clark.

its up at pinstriped post
not that it makes it official or anything but appears this is going down. weird. kinda seems like orlando is taking a mulligan on the whole VC trade. interesting to see how this all works out.
will arenas be coming off the bench?
Not to mention the Turkoglu situation two years ago.
I have no idea what Orlando’s backcourt rotation is going to look like.
yeah exactly. “well ditching hedo for the shell of vince carter didnt work out to well, lets just trade for him now”.
i imagine that hedo will resume the role of point forward with jameer starting alongside richardson. arenas will be the main ball handler with the second unit with reddick to space the floor.
so who’s backing up howard now? they dont have another real center now do they?
Put Maxiell on high heels and send him to them for...
nevermind.
Jonas, jag älskar dig! Du är vacker.
this is the closing of a chapter in DBB wild trade speculation
from this day forth we will never see the words “send player x and player y to orlando for gortat and player z”

But it’s the BEGINNING of the “trade player x to Phoenix for Gortat!” era.

Not to mention Phoenix taking a mulligan on the Turkoglu signing.

This is funny
@ShotDrJr: For the first time in sports history, a team — the Orlando Magic — has fired its players and not the coach.
Jonas, jag älskar dig! Du är vacker.
Congrats to the Magic and the Wizards, but the Suns got the best deal here.
- They get rid of Turkoglu, who was underperforming.
- Carter and Pietrus can replace Richardson’s offense; Nash makes all 2/3s play well.
- With Gortat and Lopez, they have two centers who can rebound. Frye can play the 4.
- They get a 1st-round pick.
- They can buy out Carter for about $4M, which Orlando’s cash pays for.
- Gortat is cheap, as is Pietrus (who only has one year left on his contract).
phoenix makes out like bandits
you could look at each team and argue they did well in this trade. all teams got what they wanted out of it. imo orlando just messed up, and they will be no better.
pheonix might even be better this year after this trade, and definitely set themselves up better moving forward. they needed a big man badly. they got it. carter v. richardson is almost a wash, and they got rid of turk who sucked anyway.
LOL. Orlando is going to be paying Gil and Hedo a combined 27m+/year for the next four years. NBA GM’s really are so, so, so dumb. Congratulations Otis Smith, you’ve probably just wasted the next four years of Dwight Howard’s prime.

I commend Smith for making moves, though. It’s very, very obvious that they’re trying hard to put the right pieces around Dwight Howard while they can. Even though Dwight can’t be happy with losing, he has to be happy with the effort the franchise is making to build up around him. Things weren’t working and they’re taking a chance, something we haven’t done in 5 years. I have massive trade envy.

so
when dwight howard leaves after next year the magic will still be paying these bums. that’s just wonderful for them.
Meh, you gotta do what you can while you have a superstar. Not everyone gets to have a Dwight Howard.

the cleveland cavaliers
"The mandate hangs over the Orlando Magic with words spoken and unspoken, an understanding of the ultimate requirement necessary for sparing themselves the devastation of Dwight Howard’s departure as a free agent.
"Nothing short of a championship," one league source insists is the burden the Magic are working under to hold onto Howard.
Privately, Magic general manager Otis Smith confessed to his closest associates this week that his franchise’s circumstances have become Cleveland and LeBron James all over again. The Magic are burying themselves deep into the luxury tax, taking on risky roster propositions and desperately trying to beat the clock to free agency in 2012. Deep down, Magic officials fear that Shaquille O’Neal long ago crafted the blueprint for leaving Orlando for the bright lights, big city."
And that’s why I think he’s doing the right thing. Maybe Dwight will leave, but the best chance of getting him to stay is to win a championship. Smith might lose the gamble, but I think it’s better than letting your superstar walk without at least trying.

+1
This is an awful, awful trade for Orlando. I bet Gilbert blows up in their faces, or he steals minutes from Jameer — either way it’s a lose. Hedo’s washed up, and they’re totally screwed when Dwight gets into foul trouble in the Playoffs.
I like it for Phoenix though.
I didn’t think they could be able to get out of Hedo’s contract.
Jonas, jag älskar dig! Du är vacker.
Yessir. Amazing trade for them, really. Turning Hedo and J Rich into Gortat and a big expiring? Best they could have hoped for.
Yeah, Orlando’s uberfucked. Phoenix, on the other hand, may extend their okayness for a few years.

first post ever
i’d say it’s a small improvement. just by getting rid of vince carter.. the real reason i’m posting is i’m watching NBAtv, slightly drunk. does anybody else find it to be annoying as fuck how they keep saying “moneyball” “moneyball” for everything motherfucking 3-pointer. 3-D, and smitty, and bitty, and titty: god damn stop saying motherfucking “moneyball”

Orlando may make a third trade to re-balance their new roster:
"After committing to two blockbuster trades involving eight players that change the dynamic of the Orlando Magic, a pair of questions come to mind: Are the Magic back to championship contention now that they’ve surrounded Dwight Howard with an abundance of perimeter scoring from Gilbert Arenas to Jason Richardson to Hedo Turkoglu?
Perhaps that question can’t be resolved until we know the answer to question No. 2: Are the Magic done dealing? Another move may be on the way, which GM Otis Smith said could happen within the next month, because right now their roster is bottom-heavy with small players, leaving Howard with no backup at center and very little length or strength in the frontcourt overall."

ha
welcome to our world. good like trying to trade a guard for a big man. jameer nelson will probably be dangled though. everybody needs bigs and the magic just traded one of theirs away. good job. otis smith should be smacked upside the head for this.
Nelson to Bobs?

I think it also needs to be said: the Wizards are a bunch of fucknuts. They turned Arenas, Jamison, Butler, and Brendan Haywood into Lewis, Josh Howard, Thornton, and Lazar Hayward. Wow.

it's possible Gortat wanted out
And so Smith did his best to oblige?

Really? I must be the only anti-Gortat here. I just don’t see the allure besides being teased by his athleticism the same way we were with Amir.

defense

He’s always put up solid rebounds and blocks; when given the minnutes, he has typically performed (including in the playoffs when Dwight was suspended)

He’s an athletic big man with post moves and shot-blocking ability. Superstar? Nah. But someone who will give you good-to-great play at C for the next 5 years? Yep.
Every time I’ve seen him play (which, admittedly, is probably between 20-30 times) he just doesn’t ever do anything on the court. I guess the numbers say otherwise, but he always underwhelms me. Part of it might be that my expectations are so high from the hype on here, but hopefully he’ll show that he can play in Phoenix if he’s given the minutes!
by garrettelliott on Dec 21, 2010 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
yeah ive never seen much out of him either other than he is a big body who can run the floor, which is a nice thing to have in a center. he is good on defense i suppose but i havent seen much in the way of post moves from him. maybe an expanded role will show off his offensive game. i dont think he’s much of a game changer or anything but i would have taken him simply due to the fact that we have no bigs.
I don’t think he’s a star, just a really solid player. I think he’ll get you 8-10 points, and some of those will be spoon fed to him and/or garbage buckets, and he’ll get you 8-10 boards, and he’ll add 1-2 blocks.
So on any given night, you’ve got a 7-footer who’s capable of getting you a double double with a couple blocks, without turning it over a lot and while shooting a high percentage. That, and he’s paid similarly to Charlie V.
He’s not going to turn anyone’s franchise around, but he’s a wonderful role player.
Malik Allen filled the role tonight.
