W's fan asking about Rip Hamilton

Been awhile since I've posted here :)

That said, how has Rip Hamilton played this year? Is he washed up? Good 6th man? We need a 6th man and a 3rd guard terribly.  Would Vlad (7 mil in expiring contract) and Brandan Wright (3 mil, decent young player) be enough for him? I'm not all that familiar with him outside of his good jumper, is he a good ball handler or a pure off ball player?

Other question: How is Monroe looking?

I'd make any trade to get rid of RIP

He looks out of place in Det and can probably use another atmosphere.

by FunkyDonut on Dec 3, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

I'd take that trade in a second

I don’t know who Wright is and I don’t care. He’s young, long and smooth. Strokiness = TBD. Vlad is part of our plot to get a new Russian billionaire owner.

He could probably be a good player somewhere else, but no way he wants to come off the bench.

I’d love to get Vlady and Wright for him, but JoeD would probably ask for a draft pick as well just to make us look less eager to get rid of him. (“We didn’t want to trade him, but we couldn’t pass up a potential lottery pick.!”)

Well we really need a scorer off the bench

And Wright will rot away here with Udoh, Amundson, Lee and Biedrins ahead of him. Is Rip really that bad this year?

As you can see, Reverend Randy is a reverend. And he has an underscore in his name. This man cannot be trusted.

Rip Hamilton is the greatest player in the D. He makes jump shots that sound like the guitar solo from “Comfortably Numb” when they hit the net. He blocks so many shots that he causes difficulty for Gumby. And lastly, he has a mask. You should send us David Lee for him.

by Biz Markie Moon on Dec 4, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I can't remember the link

But somewhere on a prominent sports website they have Hamilton as recently as yesterday quoted with the following:

Qdog and I have been speaking. [Long Dramatic Pause] I have to come to accept my age. I am ready to come off the bench to help my teammates. I see myself as a scorer and veteran leader for a playoff bound Zoo Crew. I also have come to terms with the trade rumors abound. If I were to be traded, I would love for that team to be Golden State. The California Bay Area is way cooler than “The Round Mound of Rebound” has ever given credit to.

I will forever abhor DMC not being a Piston.

the pistons do it just to get out of rip’s contract. Brandan Wright might improve with a change of scenery, kinda like mike beasly, although likely not to that degree. He’s somewhere in-between a 3 and a 4, so that’s reason enough for joe d to get him.

But would Golden State do it? They could start him at the three possibly, and andris biedrins could actually set him some screens. But would they want to pay him the rest of his contract with dorell wright looking very serviceable?

And if you could somehow get a pick out of Golden State then that only makes it sweeter.

I like rip

I just don’t like his contract because of gordon’s contract.

he is an impossibly bad fit for this particular team—they have 23 million dollars worth of non-all-star shooting guards, not enough minutes to go around, and horrible ball movement resulting in non-iso guys (rip and tayshaun mostly) failing in iso situations.

I guess the plan is for stuckey (and I guess MFWB too) to become awesome and be an offensive catalyst by attacking the basket. if this works, gordon is a better fit spacing the floor with treys and whatnot.

we also have to consider that a straight salary dump, even allowing for stuckey and jonas getting raises/extensions, would create cap room this coming summer—not all-star cap room, but probably quality (tall) role player cap room…although this might all be a moot point given possible labor armageddon.

Er...Um...Rip as been awesomely fantastic

in a totally devastatingly excellent way! He would turn the Warriors into a Top Four Team in the West, no question.

But I guess you could have him for David Lee and Stephen Curry. (Though I guess—you know to make salaries match or something—you should probably throw in two or three unprotected first round picks…)

by heWizard on Dec 6, 2010 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Bill Simmons has never really been sold as an objective columnist. His whole thing is, “I’m the average sports fan!”, which, excuse me as my monocle fogs up with snobbery induced heat, is probably why he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about.

The other thing is that I believe that sports can be looked it in an intellectual/artistic way, which, coming from my background, is the lens I look at it through. There’s a huge tradition of literature in sports (Frederick Exley’s A Fan’s Notes, Kerouac, Hemingway , David Foster Wallace,John McPhee, John Updike’s Rabbit Run etc, etc) that can be ignored. I’m not saying everybody views sports that way, or that they should. At best, viewing sports in that fashion, you can get something like Hemingway or Woody Allen’s essay on Earl Monroe, or even Free Darko at its best (though I think the quality has dipped now that Bethlehem Shoals isn’t writing there full time, but at it’s very best, it was amazing, almost punk rock sportswriting). At worst, you sound like Bill Walton. The point is that I’m trying to get at is, looking at all of those things I mentioned, sports aren’t the main focus. And most of those writers wrote about little things in sports. Hemingway didn’t write about the mid sixties Celtics, he wrote about bullfighting, a sport that’s popular in, what, two countries?

I don’t think Simmons would be half as popular as he is if it wasn’t for the fact he writes about Boston. I don’t know if Detroit would have produced a Simmons style guy. One, because the Midwest is one of the most shit on areas in the country (I’m from the most shit on), and everybody has a hard-on for Boston. I think Detroit could have produced a guy who could be as good as Simmons, the question is would more people lap it up. Boston does have a great sports tradition, but its also trendy, which gives Simmons something of an audience that he may not have if he referred to Isiah Thomas as Basketball Jesus.

by Biz Markie Moon on Dec 6, 2010 3:54 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Well Detroit’s got Mitch Albom, icon of the Lifetime movies of books genre. He’s probably every bit as well known as Simmons, considering none of our moms probably know Simmons but have all ready one of Albom’s horseshit books.

I don’t know how these guys get so successful. Simmons is not a good writer, columnist, or journalist in any sense of the words. Ditto for Albom. But I guess if Rick Reilly can hold the best spot in SI for all those years, Rush Limbaugh can dominate the radio, and Bill O’Reilly can be the most popular news anchor…well…it just means people’s taste in media sucks. People in the mainstream who actually do have talent and aren’t giant douches would probably be booed out of their respective industry.

In terms of your point about sports in literature, I definitely agree. As you’d expect from those guys, their works were much more insightful and interesting. Another one that comes to mind is all of Bukowski’s writings of horseracing. Also in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, I’m pretty sure the judge is actually Charlie Villanueva.

by Shinons on Dec 6, 2010 5:56 PM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Trust me, nothing pisses me off like the mainstream media. The reason I don’t buy the “liberal media is elitist” argument is because ALL media is elitist. You don’t think Rupert Murdoch thinks Glenn Beck is batshit nuts? Of course he does, it just sells. Same thing with whoever runs MSNBC: Keith Olberman is smug as hell, but he’s the face of that channel because the point is, with the network heads is to say, “Well, obviously we’re communicating a fairly complex idea here. Rather than realize its complexity, break the thing to its most base elements, sell it with quips and puns, and watch it just roll in.” The problem is when you get somebody who will actually challenge those ideas, people are so pissed off that you don’t have a Mormon jackass with a chalkboard because you’re fucking up the programming, you know, “Why isn’t Beck on tonight? I guess my wife and I could have sex, but given the percentage of jowls has gone down 33%, I’m not feeling up to it.”

Now, look at ESPN. ESPN is the same damned thing. Sportscenter never changes because a) only so much happens in a day, and b) the idea is that they might forget Brett Favre is retiring, so let’s not confuse them too much. Eventually, the repetition, at some point, becomes a source of comfort. The devil you know and the devil you don’t, you know. That’s why a series like The Wire doesn’t sell: because it changes. TV is ultimately, like most addictions, built up to the point you want the comfort at a certain time. The idea is to hook you. So Limbaugh, Reilly, etc, are really products. Simmons is the same thing with more facets: he’s going to make a reference to porn, Teen Wolf, or 90210. And I’ll cop to actually having been a fairly loyal Simmons reader, until the Garnett-Villaneuva thing, because he fucked up the formula in a way that wasn’t interesting or consistent: it wasn’t, "Yeah, I’m the ultimate fan!, it was “I got something to sell. Say something stupid.” Trust me, I’m not above the narcoticism. Reading Simmons was comfort food.

Now, the thing is with literature is you can’t get that narcotic effect unless its a series. There’s only one “A Fan’s Notes”, there’s only one “Death in the Afternoon”. And most of the things I mentioned use sports as a motif or metaphor instead of as a singular focus. I think people can look at sports as “just sports”, but I find something greater in sports than, “just sports”. Its pure aestheticism with people as opposed to words or notes or bricks and its collections of little singluar moments. I can still tell you what was going on in my life when Jason Maxiell blocked the hell out of Tyson Chandler.

And The Judge as Charlie Villanueva= me reccing you.

by Biz Markie Moon on Dec 6, 2010 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

I think you really hit on what is great about being a fan.

As to the media, I’ve always found sports journalism really interesting. Granted, crazy concepts such as objectivity and reporting have no place in the world of news, but the financial interests of media outlets are far more dependent on what it covers than traditional news media. For instance, there’s revenue in a politician’s scandal, but if the local sports team is irrelevant, that’s a big loss of income for the local newspaper. Fewer people buying the Sunday edition, fewer people reading the local columnist, fewer people visiting their websites, etc. So their interests are generally pretty intertwined. But usually it works out because the bias works in favor of the consumer, since locals are going to have that same bias. No worries. But what about when that’s not the case? My favorite example is always the new Colts stadium. All the media was 100 percent behind it, although it turned out as a terrible deal for the taxpayers. Absolutely horrible. Jim Irsay ended up in the black out of it. But these conflict of interests that news outlets and the entities they cover are always just shrugged off because “it’s just sports.” But I guess that would only matter if there were such a thing as “the news.” Really, I love looking at ESPN anymore. It cracks me up. Any piece of news, there’ll be to the right “Report: Two Paragraphs of Actual News.” Then directly to the left, the part the reader is naturally going to look at first, is “Catchy Headline That Contains 1,000 Words of Knee-Jerk Commentary!” It’s great.

Charlie Villanueva: Hairless seven footer who pisses firepower roams the countryside consciencelessly wreaking havoc. Oh yeah.

by Shinons on Dec 6, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. The same people who say, “It’s just sports,” are the same people who flip their shit over Michael Vick. And trust me: what Michael Vick did was beyond terrible. I’m not one of those people who thinks animals are above people, or would be more likely to die at a dog dying than a human in a movie, but its terrible.. But its a cultural/societal thing that, because, hey, it’s just sports, nobody wanted to look at it further. Nobody wanted to say, “Look, Vick grew up poor, in Hampton, Virginia, in a community and culture where dog-fighting wasn’t really a big deal.” It was, “He’s jeopardizing my rooting interest in him. Fuck him.” Of course, everybody can root for a winner. Its like (and this is a weird parallel) what Dennis Miller (I’m no fan of the man’s politics, but he said something pretty insightful here) said about Ross Perot: the worst sin he ever committed was being bad on television. Michael Vick was bad on television, the thing he was supposed to be good at (football) was destroyed by something he did that he wasn’t supposed to be good at (he was under no obligation to be a good person because he was football player), just as Ross Perot was bad on television.

Now, who’s fault is it in those cases: us for idolizing athletes or the athlete? I blame us, but the athlete has a lot of pressure on him too. Oh, and another thing to consider: if Jamarcus Russell was in the same position, would we, as a society, have cared? Probably not. You better be good on television or we’ll fuck you up. Ask Allen Iverson, who’s sort of basketball Vick minus late career redemption. Either say: “It’s just sports.” and look at it as “Just sports” or take it for the meaning it gives to your life and be hurt when Lebron James fucks over a whole city or Ray Lewis stabs somebody or Josh Hamilton relapses.

As a side note: No sports figure fills me with more anguish and confusion than Allen Iverson. On one hand, he’s probably the greatest athlete VA has ever produced, and I love my state. On the other hand, he’s a huge asshole whose style of play required it all to be about him in order for it to win. He’s also a drunk gambling addict and someone whose fuckups make me super sad in the words of the greatest fake sports fuck up I have knowledge of.

Yeah, because the man was a phenom at his height. You know, I think I have a great amount of sympathy towards Iverson because of my dad, who loved watching Iverson. My dad and I are currently having some difficulties. I even remember when we were driving around one day, me and him and my stepmmother and stepbrother, “Izzo (H.O.V.A)” was on the radio and my dad was talking about the “fo shizzle my nizzle used to dribble down in VA” line being about Iverson. So talking about Iverson has a very melancholy thing for me.

by Biz Markie Moon on Dec 6, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

The craziest thing about the Vick saga is that they made an example out of him for dogfighting, sending him to federal pound you in the ass prison, he’s picketed, ostracized, hated. Then after all that he gets away with murder, to which the media responds with a chorus of shrugs. No one even asks any questions. Hey Vick, why’d you lie about when you left? Hey Vick, doesn’t it look pretty bad that your brother was still around when the guy got killed? Hey Vick, why gets shot mid sentence

In terms of fault when an athlete turns out to be an asshole, I’d say the entire system isn’t really set up to churn out Gandhis. From the time they’re kids, they’re pretty much set up into entitlement – then if they don’t develop, then fuck off, shoulda been better at sports. It’s pretty screwed up. I can imagine it creates a lot of child-star syndrome. Really, if some shrink did a study on the impacts this whole system has on the brain of a developing teenager, it would be awesome. Maybe it’d give some interesting context to a guy like AI…

by Biz Markie Moon on Dec 6, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

An honest response:

Overall, Rip’s been pretty bad this season and most of last season. He’s either:

1) Getting too old to produce at a high level.
2) In need of a change of scenery.

I think DBB consensus is somewhat mixed as to which of these is actually the case. I tend to think it’s more #1 than #2, but it’s probably a mix. What he really needs is a PG to facilitate plays for him, but TBH, I’m not sure GS has that. Maybe Curry?

by brgulker on Dec 6, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

To answer your other question...

Monroe is looking good. Not great, not ROY or anything, but All Rookie 2nd Team would be an optimistic goal for him. He is a rebounding presence, decent on defense, and the rest of his game is growing. Haven’t seen the passing skills that were highly touted, but not sure he’s been put in the position to show them off too often. Glad we didn’t take Aldrich, Whiteside, Aminu, or Udoh…

by GM26 on Dec 6, 2010 11:05 AM EST reply actions

He's shown flashes of that passing ability

There were a couple passes against Orlando on Friday that I commented on. He isn’t put into position to make those passes very consistently, and part of that has to due with how the offense is run. At Georgetown he was the focal point of their offense. Part of it had to do with the fact that he was one of the best players on the floor at all times, and part of it has to do with the volume of time he’s had the ball in his hands.

I think we’ll see him make more good passes as he gets more playing time, because he’s going to get more playing time, right?
