Bill Simmons' 25 Worst Contracts
Thought it only fair to give JoD credit where credit is due. If I'm not mistaken, he is the only GM in the league to have four players on Bill Simmons' 25 Worst Contracts this year:
Just for fun, the 25 worst contracts in the league that have 3-plus years or at least $25 million remaining. I didn't have the heart to put Kevin Garnett (3 years, $56.5 million) in here even though he belongs. I am in denial.
25. Jose Calderon -- four years, $37.6m
24. Andrei Kirilenko -- two years, $34.3m
23. Jason Richardson -- two years, $27.7m
22. Corey Maggette -- four years, $39.8m
21. Peja Stojakovic -- two years, $27.6m
20. Kirk Hinrich -- three years, $26.5m
19. Matt Carroll -- four years, $16.4m
18. Rasheed Wallace -- three years, $19m
17. Andres Nocioni -- three years, $21m
16. Charlie Villanueva -- five years, $40m
15. Jason Maxiell -- four years, $20m
14. Luke Walton -- four years, $21.5m
13. Francisco Garcia -- four years, $23.2m
12. Hedo Turkoglu -- five years, $53m
11. Baron Davis -- four years, $53.7m
10. Boris Diaw -- three years, $27m
9. Richard Hamilton -- four years, $48.5m
8. Richard Jefferson -- two years, $29m
7. Michael Redd -- two years, $35.3m
6. Ben Gordon -- five years, $55m
5. Desagana Diop -- four years, $26.8m
4. Rashard Lewis -- four years, $80.4m
3. Emeka Okafor -- five years, $63m
2. Elton Brand -- four years, $66m
1. Gilbert Arenas -- five years, $96mhttp://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100208/two
To be fair, I think that Maxiell's contract would have been better had we actually committed to making him our 1st big off the bench. Instead, JoD signed CV, and shortly thereafter realized that CV may not deserver starter minutes thus pushing Maxiell further back. I really think if Max had consistency in minutes, he'd be a solid 8/7/1.5 type big with some great help d to go along with it.

Now this is a reason to get drunk and surly tonight
I, like some people, read Bill Simmons and say less than courteous things, but he knows about basketball, and he probably hit this nail on the head.
I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.
Me in 140 characters
Max doesn't have a bad contract
he’s just not playing well. When he is playing well, though, he definitely plays well enough to be worth 5 million.
I may have to disagree
So I started down a rabbit hole over at basketball-reference.com when I figured out how to copy and past their player index information into excel and still maintain the formatting.
Since then I filtered down to players who are 22-27 years old, listed as forwards, are at least 6’6" tall, and play less than 25 minutes a game (I may have to alter this to a range of 15-25 minutes per game). during the 2009-2010 season
I then ranked based on per 36 minute averages every player in the group (67 total) for points and rebounds. I added the two rankings together to get an aggregate ranking and sorted from lowest to highest.
Max comes in with an all up ranking of 65 which puts him 31st overall in this group. Then I started to look at salary rankings per realgm.com (if someone knows of a site to pull up the full list of salary rankings in the NBA I would be grateful!) to see whether Max’s salary ranking was in-line with the players around him.
Further narrowing the field to the following players (listed by point/rebound rank):
1. Kris Humphries
2. Tyrus Thomas
3. Chris Wilcox
4. Nathan Jawai
5. Brandon Bass
6. Joey Dorsey
7. Josh Boone
8. Jason Maxiell
9. Chuck Hayes
10. Chris Richard
11. Kwame Brown
12. Josh McRoberts
13. Darko Milicic
14. Jason Smith
Of these 14 players, Maxiell is the 2nd highest paid after Darko. With the exception of Hayes, Dorsey, and Bass all of these players are playing on losing teams as well. Max’s salary rank is 145. The average for this group is 251.
And Max hasn’t been “playing well” all season. We gave him a contract extension and a hefty salary bump expecting him to improve and make it worth our while. Regardless of the reason for his poor play, we put a good amount of capital into developing him for the future but have failed to do so as a franchise. That’s why I would say this is still a pretty horrendous contract.

Fuck Bill Simmons
he just loves to talk shit about the Pistons.. and never fails to create an opportunity to besmirch Joe Dumars.
I throw darts at a picture of his face.
I put a banana in his tailpipe.
If I had a parakeet, I would his print his columns out and line the bottom of the cage with them.

I love how less than a year ago Bill Simmons was loving up Gordon.
His exact words:
All I know is this: Only a few current players can win two games per playoff series by themselves, and he’s one of them. If the goal is to win the title and not just compete for one, then I want Ben Gordon on my team.
Funny how things change once he becomes a Piston. No one should be surprised when he bad-mouths the Pistons. We could sign LeBron frickin’ James and the next day there’d be an article about how James “isn’t that good.”

Regardless of Bill Simmons’ personal opinion of the Pistons or Ben Gordon, the guy knows more about professional basketball than any 3 DBBers put together. That said, he still contradicts himself all the freaking time.
And the worst part of all this is Ben Gordon is so obviously not playing at the level that he’s getting paid to play at for who knows why. I’m just thankful we have Jerebko to drop mad buckets.

If and only if…
(Petey + Blazers trolls) = (deformed defenses + pussy basketball)
Divide that sum by [elite], and I think it becomes quite clear [IMO], actually, precisely what is actually happening at any given moment on the hardwood … if one is willing to not only look, but actually perceive the players [and their INTERdependence] in the various aspects of the game.

Let me be clear: IMO, Bill Simmons is just as big a nincompoop as all the other ESPN writers (I’m looking at you Chad Ford, Hollinger, and David Thorpe). The difference is Simmons is a lot more entertaining to read.
But, as MFTJL4LYFE so aptly demonstrated, any writer, like Simmons, who retroactively always makes themselves out to have been correct on every single player ever, is going to look like they “know a lot.” Because every article he writes is just a representation of the conventional wisdom of whatever particular moment the article was written in.
It's real simple why Gordon is struggling:
Richard Hamilton.
Stuckey and Gordon actually compliment each other pretty well. They can mask each other’s defensive deficiencies through cross-matching, and Gordon’s shooting ability and outside touch compliment Stuckey’s drives. It’s why Gordon got off to such a hot start, Hamilton going down after one game.
Unfortunately, since Hamilton’s gotten healthy, Gordon has struggled mightily. Their games do not compliment each other in the slightest. Of all the potential pairings at PG/SG (Stuckey/Hamilton, Gordon/Hamilton, Stuckey/Gordon), Gordon/Hamilton is by far the worst and Stuckey/Gordon looks to be the best.
by Terrence J. Lynch on Feb 17, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions
Have you looked at the pairings +/- comparisons?
Might be useful to look at to get a true sense of which pairings this season have been the most effective/efficient. I think that Yahoo may have this functionality but not 100% sure as I usually don’t use Yahoo that often.
Assuming the data supports your hypothesis though, you bring up an interesting point, although personally I think that Gordon’s struggles could also be related to Rip being on the team all together. While BG said the right things at the beginning of the season, I think he still expected to be the starting SG before the trade deadline. Since coming back though, he’s average only 21.5 minutes per game. I highly doubt he expected to only play 21 minutes per game while getting paid $11 million a year.
I don’t think his stats support giving him more time right now but at this point I’m starting to wonder if his poor shooting is a factor of his lack of time on the floor rather than who he’s playing with while out there.

I know you love to hate Hamilton, but I’d love to see some math to support this. Is Hamilton the reason why Gordon shot 5.6% from three in January?
Would you like me to give you Hubie Brown's home telephone number so that you can actually call him yourself to confirm that he is someone who knows me?
Luol Deng vs. Rip Hamilton
Sort of a strange comparison to draw at first glance, but think about their offensive games for a second. Both of them rely for a good chunk of their offense through mid-range jumpshots. Gordon and Deng co-existed just fine for several years.
Until it can be proved otherwise, I do not see Rip as the reason for Gordon’s piss poor play.
Piggy-backing off Gulk and MP, the only change in Gordon’s current stats from his career numbers is 3 pt% and his rebounding is down slightly from terrible to embarrassingly terrible.
It’s hard for me to come up with a logical reason why Rip could be to blame for Gordon missing 3’s.
I don't love to hate Hamilton
Also, how are Luol Deng and Hamilton similar at all? Deng definitely attacks the basket a lot more than Hamilton (30% vs. 11%), Deng is better at creating his own offense as well. Hamilton’s game also relies heavily on coming off screens, unlike Deng.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Rip gets healthy and Gordon starts struggling. Their games don’t compliment each other at all.

again, how does Rip impact Ben Gordon’s 5.6% three point shooting in January?
Would you like me to give you Hubie Brown's home telephone number so that you can actually call him yourself to confirm that he is someone who knows me?
Allow me to explain how a Rip Hamilton offense works:
Rip runs off a ton of screens. Someone stands at the top of the key pounding the ball while Rip gets open. After Rip gets open, we’re lucky if there’s more than 10-12 seconds on the clock most of the time. At which point Hamilton will do one of three things:
Dribble-drive
Shoot (if he’s open)
Dribble-hand-off
If he chooses to pass, it’s with a less than 8 seconds left most of the time. Sometimes less. Now explain to me how Gordon is going to get a good look when he’s getting the ball with only a few seconds left on the clock?
I rip on Rip because he frankly deserves it. A guy shooting sub 40% and sub 25% from deep should not be the focus on our offense, yet 90% of the plays we run while he’s on the court go right into his hands. He’s averaging the 2nd most shots of his career and making the 2nd least shots of his career. So why does our offense seem to always go through him? His usage rate is higher then all but one year in Detroit, his first year when he played under Rick Carlisle.
I’d understand if we ran so many plays for him if he was efficient and it made us better offensively, but right now we’re one of the worst teams in the league offensively, and a lot of that has to fall on Hamilton.
And you can’t really use the injury excuse, because Gordon also had to deal with injuries as well.
Like I said, Rip was one of my favorite Pistons of all time, but he’s definitely worn out his welcome at this point.
by Terrence J. Lynch on Feb 17, 2010 10:32 PM EST up reply actions
You watch a different Pistons team than I do.
Let me tell you how a Ben Gordon offense works. He gets the ball and dribbles.
Option 1: He dribbles off his foot.
Option 2: He jacks up a jumpshot. He’s a good jumpshooter, so it goes in quite often, or at least in the past.
Option 3: He throws a terrible jump pass.
Like I said, Rip was one of my favorite Pistons of all time, but he’s definitely worn out his welcome at this point.
Apparently, with you and you only. Honestly, and I say this for your own sake, the only welcome worn out is your constant, repeated hating on Rip. It’s old. It’s tired. It’s annoying.
Please, drop it.

Also rec'd.
Rip is classy as fuck and has a much better all-around game than anyone gives him credit for. He’s going to make a contender real happy in the next season or to, and I’ll be happy for him. Now Tay on the other hand, I think I’ve just started to hate. Can’t put my finger on why though.

Terrence J Lynch FTW
Simmons is entertaining but his knowledge of basketball is very overrated. In the end he is a Celtics homer who writes funny articles and goes with the momentum and changes his opinion to match what actually happened after the fact. I honestly don’t think he has a better understanding of the NBA than half of the fans out there, but he is such a good writer that ESPN has to make him one of their crown jewels. Let’s be real here, how hard is it to go through a list of contracts and pick out 25 that you think are bad ones? We’re not talking about great insight here people.
I'm just like a sports reporter, but without the insight or money.
Other Piston's related quotes from the same article
“Paul Millsap: Two-time winner of “the best tweener/banger” award, easily edging out Chuck Hayes, Taj Gibson, Glen Davis, Craig “The Rhino” Smith, Brandon Bass and the 283-Pound Guy Who Ate Jason Maxiell."
Does Jason really look THAT big? I don’t think he looks as big as Smith, for one.
“Kevin Martin (30): My favorite possibly available trade piece — great contract, proven scorer, high hoops IQ, someone who’d thrive on a veteran team that protected him defensively and ran plays for him. Right now he’s playing on a glorified pickup team with Tyreke Evans, who thinks “point guard” means “I get to dribble over midcourt.” Not gonna fly. Someone like Martin is a luxury. You pamper him. You set him screens. You hook him up on slash-and-kicks. You go to him after games and say, “Hey, what’s the best place to deliver the ball for you — chest high and a little to the right?” He could absolutely be a contender’s No. 1 scoring option like Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton once upon a time. Stay tuned."
Once upon a time. Huh. He may be right.
“Joakim Noah: The new Laimbeer: Love him if he’s on your team, hate him if he’s playing against you.”
Yeah, ’cause Noah is such a sweet shooter. Love that stroke from 3!
“35. Chauncey Billups
Thirty years from now, when the Pistons have finished their 30th straight losing season and officially switched places with the Lions in the Detroit landscape, someone will write a “Curse of Chauncey” book for which Joe Dumars will refuse to be interviewed."
I’m sure the Pistons will manage to go 0-82, oh basketball genious that you are! My bet: the Pistons are contending again before the Celtics (sure Bill, just keep telling yourself they’re contending now).
