Timberwolves @ Pistons [Game Thread]

Minnesota Timberwolves at Detroit Pistons, Feb 16, 2010 6:30 PM CST

A little communication break down at DBB HQ, so we're starting the post-ASW off on the wrong foot.  Let's hope the Pistons do not follow.  What will follow, is a full recap.

Anyway, Bill Laimbeer returns to Detroit again as the T-Wolves take on our beloved Pistons.

Remember this beaut'?

That picture makes anything else that could potentially happen tonight a lowlight.

That is awesome.

Was hoping the pic would make everyone forget about the lack of a normal preview ;-)

Lots of hope for the playoffs

At least judging from all this pre-tipoff talk.

They’re gonna have to go 22-9 (.70).

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 6:44 PM CST reply actions

Our opponent has a worse record than we do

And how many more times will we be able to say that this year?

by Toledo Joe on Feb 16, 2010 6:44 PM CST reply actions

Heh, maybe only one more time when the we play the Warriors in Oakland. And possibly a second time when we play the Nets again.

I, also, love that Swede. But now I have to work.

Bummer. Have a good one.

I have to teach a late night class. Keep up the rooting and posting for me.

Have no fear ;) I’m nothing if not long-winded.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

i hate bill simmons

he has 4 pistons listed as having untradeable contracts (in the worst 16)

while i don’t like some of our contracts, they’re definitely tradeable

by the89oracle on Feb 16, 2010 6:53 PM CST reply actions

4?!

Who?

Rip’s is bad, but not untradeable. If Zach Randolph can be traded, anyone can be.
Ben Gordon’s might be the only one.

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

Rip, CV, Max. There’s a fanpost on this topic, actually.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

Gotcha, thx.

I think this line from Simmons says it all: " I didn’t have the heart to put Kevin Garnett (3 years, $56.5 million) in here even though he belongs. I am in denial."

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

Rip, CV, BG, and Maxiell

Rip has like 4 years, 40+ million, CV has 5 and 40, BG 5 and 55, and maxiel 4 and 20. or something like that

but that includes this year. next year, with a strong season from any one of those guys, they’ll look real attractive

by the89oracle on Feb 16, 2010 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

Do we count this yr?

Aren’t most of the players’ salaries paid by this point?

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

As I read it, this year is included in Simmons’ list.

And I don’t discount it due to the KG comment … we’re all biased, and at least he was honest about that one.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

this year is included in that

which is why i think by the trade deadline next year, if rip is still scoring 18-20 ppg and staying healthy, some team will definitely pick up his remaining 2 years 25 million.

by the89oracle on Feb 16, 2010 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

Got it.

In all honestly, w/ no bias, I’ll admit that Rip and BG’s deals are bad.

CV’s is decent, and is Max’s that bad? I mean, it’s not great, but it is really among the top 25 worst in the entire NBA?

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

Rip is bad, but not untradeable

if Corey Maggette can garner interest this year, rip can next year.

and i think maxiell looks more attractive next year, definitely not worst 25

by the89oracle on Feb 16, 2010 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

After this season Max will have $15 mill, 3 yrs left. Is that really that bad?

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

IMO, that depends on the new CBA. There may not be a lot of room for rotation players like Max at 5 million per annum. We’ll have to wait and see.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Max’s contract is worse in hindsight than it was at the time.

I don’t know what criteria Simmons used, but it seems to me that “tradeability” had to be part of the decision-making process, and right now, contract length greatly, greatly impacts tradeability.

Max’s contract per annum isn’t the issue, IMO, it’s the length. Who wants a 6 and 6 guy for that many years of guaranteed money?

Top 25? Idk. But pretty bad.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

Good points.

Gotta take into account the new CBA.

It just seems that “top 25” is extreme when there are guys like Nocioni, Carroll, Walton…all w/ arguably worse contracts than Max.

by Steve Kays on Feb 16, 2010 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree. Max’s contract is not THAT bad. Probably another insight into his bias.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

max's contract is pretty crappy, its not gilbert arenas awful

but he is at best an energy guy and at worst completely worthless.

by dandresden on Feb 16, 2010 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

Max's contract is horrible.

That is all. He’s a $2.5mil/yr player at best.

Man, the Palace looks particularly empty tonight.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 7:11 PM CST reply actions

Anyone else notice...

At the beginning of the game how washed out the blue on the collar of Ben Wallace’s jersey was? And how Jonas had the “Mr. D” patch either covered up or missing?

Have even the equipment managers given up on this season?

Well, that made me resent Tayshaun a little less.

I just turned on the game, it’s halftime and we’re tied with Minnesota, and Kelser and blaha both agreed we were playing well.

by Roll The Dyess on Feb 16, 2010 7:46 PM CST reply actions

The offense is about as good as it can be, I think.

We’re getting bitch slapped inside by Love and Jefferson, though, which is why it’s tied.

Maxiell

I know he didn’t put up much in the way of stats out there but I thought he looked the best I’ve seen him look in a while. He looked like a legit big man fighting for boards and playing defense.

I'm just like a sports reporter, but without the insight or money.

by SadPanda1 on Feb 16, 2010 7:50 PM CST reply actions

i've liked maxiell as the backup center

when we slid him to the 4 and made him guard some perimeter shooting bigs, he’s just not the same. he does somehow does better in the post against bigger players (howard and chandler come to mind)

Sessions had a great, under the radar year last year. He’s been relegated to bench duty this season, and it’s definitely had a negative impact.

Enter CV, enter missed assignment in the low post, and a foul.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

I can’t believe how wrong we all were about Charlie V. His efficiency numbers were better than Bosh’s last year, it’s hard to imagine how he did considering just how bad he is at times.

I wonder how Joe will clean this mess up. Gordon can potentially be a cornerstone, CV….is better than Nazr I suppose

by bearded thundar on Feb 16, 2010 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

Hey, not all of us were wrong about him. ;)

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

He overpaid Nazr, too.

by TDP on Feb 16, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

CV’s contract is right where it should have been, considering his numbers/age/etc. Obviously it looks bad right now, but in general I still don’t think we overpaid (at least by much). Benny G’s contract, however, is a bit much. I’m actually interested in seeing what type of player we could get for BG in a trade. I love Rip’s more all-around game and his newfound ability as a playmaker, and I’d rather have him stick around than BG. That being said, he is getting a little old and probably would rather play for a contender.

by The Joel on Feb 17, 2010 9:38 AM CST up reply actions

Thank you for reassuring me that I am not insane. I’d much rather get out of BG’s contract than Rip’s, and it’s for the reasons you just mentioned — Rip’s desire and ability to facilitate.

We started playing good.

In seriousness, we figured out how to stop getting killed inside, and literally everything clicked on offense. Probably our best offensive output of the season. The ball has moved quickly, we’ve rebounded on both ends, and we’ve pushed the ball off misses and turnovers.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, guys are moving without the ball, cutting into open lanes, and making the right pass. The offense actually looks………fluid.

by Thom_not_Tom on Feb 16, 2010 8:48 PM CST reply actions

If you’re watching now, just look how smoothly the ball is moving, how hard we’re playing on D, and how hard we’re crashing the boards.

That was the entire third quarter, and it won us the game.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Cool

So, um can we do this semi-regularly, or was it just a good stretch against a bad team, I wonder.

by Toledo Joe on Feb 16, 2010 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Eh, do we REALLY want to make a playoff push at this point?

Cousins, Wall, Favors, Turner, Aldrich, etc. or getting destroyed by LeBron again?

by Terrence J. Lynch on Feb 16, 2010 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

I think we can play well on offense and still lose. We’re not a great defensive or defensive rebounding team, but we should at least be able to put up points consistently.

by brgulker on Feb 16, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

This was what I worried about

The team finally clicking together, causing us to tank the first half but end up with a decent draft pick. Talk about a complete fail of a season

by bearded thundar on Feb 16, 2010 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

This is the T'Wolves

One of two teams definitely worse than us. Don’t put too much weight into it.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Feb 16, 2010 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Admit it

This offense looked great tonight. We probably won’t be getting half as many dunks, but we certainly look better than we did in the first half – which would have only netted us the 6th pick. That’s why I’m scared we’ll end up around 10, if this team plays somewhat good defense, they’ll probably go at least .400 the rest of the season, which is considerably better than what they are now

by bearded thundar on Feb 16, 2010 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

It’s likely the latter scenario, but we’ll find out for sure tomorrow against the Magic if tonight’s game was indeed just a fluke/great stretch.

by Kruza on Feb 16, 2010 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

Orlando's a bad example

We always play them tough, for no damn reason at this point.

by Terrence J. Lynch on Feb 16, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Random question.

My roommate and I were reminiscing about when the Pistons had Corliss Williamson coming off the bench. They got him in a trade from Toronto that was JYD & Montross for Coriss, two expiring deals & a future first-rounder. What happened to that pick? Did they select somebody or was that swapped in another deal down the road?

by Grant E. on Feb 16, 2010 8:49 PM CST reply actions

The only trades I see concerning any draft picks between the two teams...

..was a 2nd round pick Toronto gave us which we then gave to the Miami Heat. They selected Rasual Butler in 2002 NBA Draft.

by DBB Diablo on Feb 16, 2010 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

I saw that too, but they got a future first-rounder. Hmm… ’tis a mystery.

by TDP on Feb 16, 2010 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

Toronto had two first round draft picks..

..in that same draft. But it doesn’t say where they got the first one (which was probably just their own) they traded the pick to Houston. And the second one was from Seattle and New York and nothing from Detroit.

The only other draft Toronto had more than one first round draft pick was the 2005 NBA draft and that might be a little too far out.

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Austin-Daye-1316/

He was at the bottom of his class. In fact his combine results were so bad that some people thought he dogged them.

I personally don’t think his speed is nearly as bad as the numbers represent, but his so the more he can leg press, the more he accelerates, thus higher he jumps jumping ability can use a lot of work. But that’s where Ben Wallace comes in. F=ma, (W=mgh)

In all fairness to him, he looks like he’s bulked up a bit. He no longer looks like tree bark, he has been upgraded to toothpick.

As human beings, I have nothing against either Curry or Karl. I wish Karl a speedy recovery and hope for the best.

But as a coach, I don’t think he’s that good. And I think Denver is better off as a team without him as a head coach. That has nothing to do with Karl as a human being.

in most cases, yeah

It sounds like he might have what his son had in 2006 – thyroid cancer. If that’s the case and it’s “treatable and curable” then it’s probably of the papillary variety and there’s a high cure rate — even of men his age — close to 100%. It might not be that, though, since they’re not calling it that and just saying “throat” and that there was a lump.
