New York's Gamble: Please Help Me Understand

I need a little help understanding the massive gamble Walsh has undertaken for the last two years, which culmanated with the trades yesterday.

New York now has enough cap space to offer two maximum contracts this summer (assumming they renounce all their rights to any of this year's players). This apparently was the plan all along. To make that happen this year, New York gave away last year's lottery pick in Hill, and will not have another lottery pick until at least 2013. They will have no exceptions this summer and can therefore only sign minimum contracts after their two max contracts.

So, let's say they get what they want. The Knicks sign Lebron and Bosh this summer. Here is their roster:

Lebron/Bosh/Gallinari/Chandler/Douglas/Curry/2nd round pick/5 minimum contracts

That is a scary starting lineup, except for the obvious fact there is no proven PG and no real center. Anyone else think that team will have a very hard time getting past the first or second round? Things wouldn't get much better the following year either, since they will only get a very low first round pick (Houston has the right to swap). So, the best they could add is a MLE, maybe a biannual (not sure), a low first round pick, and a second round pick.

Am I underestimating the power of a James/Bosh tandem, or am I correct that even in the best case scenario New York is in trouble?

What if they aren't able to get what they want? What if they have to settle for keeping Lee, getting Joe Johson, and some mid-level type player?

Please help me understand, DBB!
