If Hamilton is playing like he want to remain in Detroit, Tayshaun Prince is acting like he wants out. Yes, his numbers have been picking up (15 points and eight rebounds last night). But his body language hasn’t.

In the first quarter, Prince threw a cross-court pass to Rodney Stuckey. Jonas Jerebo jumped to catch it but realized it wasn’t intended for him and pulled back. By the time Jerebko landed, Stuckey lost track of the ball and it went out of bounds.

Prince looked at Jerebko, threw his arms arms wildly and made a disgusted face.

Contrast that to when Ben Wallace dropped a Prince pass out of bounds early in third quarter. Prince just pointed, nodded and ran up court.

I noticed these two instances last night, but there plenty of other examples. Prince needs to start showing the newcomers more respect. He can’t play every minute with Stuckey, Hamilton, Maxiell and Wallace.

I haven’t really noticed this too much, although I haven’t looked for it, either. Anyone else notice things like this?

(In Tay’s defense, he’s always seemed to have the weirdest body language in the world — he’s almost as awkward as Kevin McHale running up and done the court. It’s like he never knows what to do with his hands, so they just hang there. Or something.)

I noticed the first item

Where Tay passed it out of bounds and threw his hands up. I actually didn’t record that game, otherwise I would have just looked it up. But to me, it seemed like Tay was blaming himself for the bad pass.

I’ve actually noticed quite abit of this as well.
I have an issue with Tay and with Rip, 2 separate issues.

1. Tay: All you’ve stated above and more, I dont even really think he trusts Stuckey either, hes upset about handing it over to the youngins and it shows. I’ve seen him shoot jumpers on numerous occasions where younger players were open or posting or cutting.

2: Rip: Rip isn’t afraid to pass to the young guys which is good, i’m not getting into Rips playing style issues right now. But to me its obvious he has no respect for Kuester anymore, Rip is a coach killer. Not just the handshake ignore, but last night I saw Kuester yelling to get Rips attention while Rip was at around the foul line on there basket, feet away and Rip doesn’t respond.

I don’t hate the guys, I love them for what they’ve done, but I’d like to see them both be gone by at the latest early next season, its time to move on…. they both have the attitudes now, that I think is just gonna stick with them as long as there here. I think they could both thrive on contenders….. they would be so pumped to be playing for something again.

I've notived a few instances of what you described with Rip

It’s been mostly him blatantly ignoring Kuester (high five, what you said, and most recently I noticed in a few huddles when Kuester is drawing up plays, he’d just get up and walk away — and sadly, some of the younger guys follow — while Kuester is still drawing up a play). Normally, I probably wouldn’t look into any of this as meaning anything, and maybe we’re just noticing what are usually normal things merely because of what happened last year with Curry, but it’s bothersome nonetheless.

I think Rip is a great baller and I love his style of play, but I’d be lying if some of these little things haven’t caused me to raise an eyebrow and wonder, “wtf Rip?” It probably goes back to Chauncey getting dealt, and I don’t blame the guy for feeling betrayed, upset, or whatever, but there’s no room for that here when the team has young guys who need to develop and learn to respect Kuester (or any other coach for that matter).

I’m pretty amazed at how quickly people have turned on Rip, and complain about his attitude. It exists only in hearsay, as I’ve never heard him knock the org, get into fights with the coaching staff, I’ve never heard other players or coaches complain about his attitude.

“Yeah, that ain’t happenin’” was the closest to that— but it was not a direct quote, an off-the-record remark by McClosky which may or may not have ever happened. Beyond that, it’s all about body language. And Rip’s body language hasn’t changed. He’s always been a prick. But he’s been our prick. I don’t see the changes so many describe about him, only the same old Rip.

People can get tired of that, I understand. I’m just surprised at the chorus of commenters on this very site who complain about his “bad attitude” which, from my perspective, has never been aimed at this organization— coaches, players, anything.

Tay, on the other hand— got into a shouting match with Kuester last month. Yet people claim Rip is tuning out Kuester???

That’s probably true, but it’s scrutinized now more than ever because of other variables — last year’s supposed spat with Curry; what you mentioned; comments he made about the Billups trade that suggest he wasn’t happy about it, thus implying he’s not happy; negative vibes people have about him because of his contract (even though the contract is not his fault, it’s natural for people to gear frustrations toward the player if they don’t live up to it or it creates a burden on the team’s budget); etc. I’m not saying it’s fair but it’s natural for people to magnify his actions a little more due to everything that’s happened over the past year. Losing certainly doesn’t help.

As for complaining more about Rip than Tay, I guess it’s because we’ve seen more negative variables, as much as they may be hearsay, regarding Rip. We hear it and then we naturally let it affect how we might think — doesn’t make it right, but that’s probably what’s causing a lot of us to speak out on our observations.

Personally, Tay’s in my doghouse and Rip I’m just curious about. It’s a mystery really if Rip is causing any type of problems, so mystery springs curiosity. If Rip is being just normal ol’ Rip and this isn’t creating any tension between Rip, other players, and Kuester, then this has been a waste of our time. But we’re at a period with the Pistons where everyone is getting analyzed to the core, so I don’t see any problems with people speculating a little about why Rip is being such a prick, as normal as it might seem. But I do agree that Tay deserves just as much flack as Rip, if not more.

i like rips game, but have grown tired of the techs and whatnot

rip seems to think hes kobe bryant or something when he’s arguing some calls. like he deserves special treatment that is reserved for the dwades and kobes of the league. that annoys me and i dont think that crying about calls and getting techs is detroit basketball. he’s done it for time immemorial but im just tired of it.

that said, im not really hating on either of these guys, if they play good and fit with the team then i want them here, i dont think they really do anymore and whatever their positives or negatives may be im just really over both of them. they are rarely fun to watch anymore and not just cause they rarely play.

I’m pretty amazed at how quickly people have turned on Rip, and complain about his attitude.

I’m not sure the two things are one and the same.

I love Rip, always will, no matter where he ends up.

But I’ve observed a handful of things this year that make me think he’s harboring some type of bitterness/frustration/ill-will/bad attitude — something negative — and it seems to be impacting the way he handles himself out there. He looks disinterested during timeouts, he’s snubbed the coach a couple times, etc. Bitching about Rip’s attitude in a game thread in the heat of the moment is only natural, I think.

My opinion: I’d much rather have him for the next 3 years than Ben Gordon for the next five. Maybe I’ll learn to cheer for Ben Gordon, maybe I won’t. I’ll always cheer for the front of the jersey, but to me, the player whose name is on the back is either going to earn my respect as a fan, or he won’t; donning the Piston blue doesn’t guarantee it. And IMO, even an aging Rip offers more to this franchise in terms of overall, net production than Gordon will. (I’d love to be proven wrong, though)

I wish he could retire here; unfortunately, Dumars has made that all but impossible.

Now, that’s about as up front as I can be. To me, a few gripes here and there just is not the same thing as turning on a player. Same can be said of Sheed. I don’t know how many times I threw my hands up in frustration with Sheed, his laziness, and his ill-advised techs. But I loved watching him play, and in some ways still do.

Hope that makes sense.

And whoever suggested that?

Well, I was reading this comment

I’m pretty amazed at how quickly people have turned on Rip, and complain about his attitude.

As linking complaining about Rip and turning on Rip.

Am I misunderstanding?

I’ve complained about his attitude last year and this year, but I haven’t turned on him.

You're alright man

I think there is a clear distinction.

I didn’t link the two. I’ve said some people turned on him, that doesn’t mean those who have complained about him have turned on him.

i dont feel that i have "turned on rip" but i am just generally fatigued with him

he has been playing effectively as brgulker states down the thread, hes been trying to be a good soldier for this team but after the last couple of seasons of disappointment (and yes i still consider them disappointments even after how bad we’ve sucked this year) im just over all the 2004 core players. ill give ben wallace a pass, but tay and rip, im just tired of them. to me it comes down to this, do you think we will be contending in the next three years? i dont think that most of us would say that we will be, at least not for a championship. if not then whats the point of keeping rip around? its time to embrace full blown rebuilding mode and build up new vets instead of clinging to the old ones.

i would love rip if we were contending, he brings a lot to the table. but since we arent going to be while he is still able to be a viable option, and just see how ray allen is falling apart to see how well rips game will age, he isnt really needed here anymore.

if he gets traded to a contender i will cheer for them (as long as its not the cavs or celts) just like i cheer for chauncey. rip was a special player but i think he’s done here.

i think if we have success with ben gordon we will find it very easy to cheer for him just like we did for rip.

sorry that was kinda rambling. im about 120 oz deep right now.

Gordon is Rip's replacement

I just didn’t see it until a little while after the deal. I thought Gordon might literally come off the bench like CHI.

Rip was our lead scorer for how many seasons? The pressure is on Gordon to step up- Stuckey can’t carry the team to wins.

I'm not a big fan of Rip or Tay anymore...

Rip can pass all he wants and score all he wants, and the same goes for Tay. I just don’t like them anymore. I don’t hate them (unless they go to Cleveland) but I just want them out of here at this point.

I Hate Rip...There...I said it.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

I feel like Rip’s playing style is why you see our offense stagnate and stall so much. To get him his shots everyone has to stop moving while he runs around picks like a cat chasing a laser pen. Which takes us out of any kind of rhythm that we might have built up because Rip has to get his touches.

When he was hurt this year and we actually had Bynum, Stuckey, and Gordon healthy, I thought we showed a lot of promise for a fluid and potent offense. As soon as Rip came back we got boring and predictable again.

He is almost completely worthless as ball handler. Every time I see him take more than two dribbles I start yelling at the screen to get it out of his hands, and about 60% of the time my yelling is quickly followed by Rip dribbling the ball off his foot and out of bounds, or falling down and turning it over to the opposing team. Oh, and it’s usually in the 3rd or 4th quarter when we’re mounting a run.

This is not a bandwagon jump that I’m making either, I’ve been saying these things for years (not here, DBB has been somewhat of a new discovery for me).

Tay on the other hand…I’ve felt like it’s been a few years since he’s wanted out of here. Ever since ‘04 I just haven’t felt like his head has been totally in the game and I don’t understand it. I think he’s just homesick and wants to get back out on the west coast.

I haven’t “quickly turned” on Rip… its been more of a gradual thing with me.

by Rban on Feb 4, 2010 10:25 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

What bothers about Rip and Tay is that after coming back, they keep passing the buck and blaming the rooks for the losses. Rip in particular, after virtually every game, explains the team’s troubles with something like “well, we have a lot of younger guys, and they’re still learning,” etc. I feel like w/ him, Tay, and Ben in the starting 5, you can’t blame the youth movement for your struggles, especially on nights you shoot 2-14.

Re: Rip playing like he wants to stay

I agree with this 100%.

Since he’s been back, he’s making an obvious and concerted effort to be a facilitator from the SG spot — something that’s not necessarily natural for him. To me, this demonstrates that in spite of whatever frustrations he’s harboring, he ultimately wants to be (and win) here, not elsewhere.

He can’t control that Dumars signed a younger SG to a bigger deal. All he can control is how he adjusts to that situation. I think he’s doing a pretty amazing job at accommodating both his game and his role, frankly. And to me, it shows clearly that he’s willing to do whatever the team asks of him.

Prince is irritated

because the writing is on the wall.. it’s not hard to see, he’s smart enough to know.

Jerebko brings more to the table as a rookie than Tay did, and that only makes the writing easier to see for Tay.
