Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Ty Thomas? I Wish.

Any reason not to go after him? He's definitely on his way out of Chicago, and I'm not sure what kind of value they can get for him. From what I've seen, Thomas has constantly been mistreated by the Bulls' coaching staff (particularly Skiles) and management. He would give us something we really, really need: a second post defender alongside Big Ben. That being said, we don't really have anything we could give up for him. The only way I see it happening is if Chicago becomes so desperate to move him that they just take Kwame's Expiring, Summers, and a 2nd round pick. Not too likely.

a second post defender alongside Big Ben

I’d argue that Jerebko is getting there, and if anything Thomas could complicate Jerebko’s development. And we all know how well Thomas responds when he needs to share PT with developing players…

How would he complicate Jerebko's development?

Thomas plays PF, we can keep JJ at SF. And seriously, Thomas is pissed because he’s playing behind Taj Gibson. Gibson is 24, and has no ceiling beyond what he currently is. There is no reason he should be starting. This is the way it’s been for the Thomas’ entire tenure with Chicago. I think he’d be fine with a fresh start.

Also

I think if we’re going to move any player(s) for a frontcourt upgrade, we need to focus on scoring first. Summers and Wilcox for Hakim Warrick would make me happy, since Summer and Wilcox aren’t doing shit anyways (and worst case, Warrick expires this year). Of course, if we do this, it might suggest that Villanueva would need to start so we can bring Warrick off the bench. I’m okay with this, since a CV and Wallace pairing has been our most productive frontcourt lineup. Swap in Kwame and Warrick behind them and at least both of our units can score…

I don't know if Thomas has been entirely mistreated...

According to my Bulls buddies, he’s been nothing but an entitled head-case since he got to the team. Expecting starter’s minutes without earning them. They like Taj’s consistency and he plays with much more effort on the defensive end much more consistently. Sure Tyrus should be able to average 20 boards and 10 blocks a game with his ridiculous physical tools, but he’s like a Bugatti with a re’tard (as the French say) behind the wheel. No, that was not PC. He absolutely canNOT be your starting PF unless you have a fabulous offensive C— he’d be great paired with a Kaman, peak-era Big Z, or other type of less-mobile but offensively effective C. Basically, guys we don’t have.

I thought Ben Wallace didn’t see eye-to-eye with Noah and Ty Thomas.

And what’s the REAL story behind his broken arm anyways? I thought the general opinion was that he has attitude/character issues.

by garrettelliott on Feb 9, 2010 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Ugh. That is what's being perpetuated by the Bulls front office...

Which was also being said about Ben Gordon. I don’t trust anything coming from Jerry Reinsdorf. I mean, these are the people that employed Vinny Del Negro and signed Jannero Pargo to replace Gordon. Tyrus supporters among Bulls fans tend to argue that he’s been constantly mishandled. Skiles very obviously didn’t like him and wouldn’t play him and he has never been given consistent minutes or allowed to make mistakes in order to grow. I mean, he’s coming off the bench for a team starting Taj Gibson (who is shit on defense, this is not debatable — Thomas is clearly the superior player) and Kirk Hinrich (who has been a hot pile of shit this year).

As for his arm, it was broken. The real story is that he broke it lifting weights. Nothing else to it.

I heard it implied elsewhere (Slam, I think) that the real story behind his broken arm was something crazy. But it could have just been unfounded TMZ-style gossip.

Well, given that the Bulls are much better than they were last year and WAY better than us...

I’d say we probably shouldn’t be using, “They hired Vinny Del Negro!” and “They signed Jannero Pargo to replace Gordon!” as rallying cries against their quality of judgment. That shit worked. They’re leaner, they know their roles, there are less wasted possessions (thanks BG!), they play good D, they rebound the ball, and D-Rose has been an absolute superstar the last two months. The fact that they know exactly what they’re going to get from Taj Gibson day in and day out is a HUGE deal— between he and Noah, they’re getting 20/20/3blk from their starting frontcourt— I would have a permabone if our frontcourt were anywhere close that that type of production.

Tyrus is delusional, has proved absolutely nothing in this league, and as of right now he stands at Hakeem Warrick Pt.2 status. They’re a better team when he’s not there, and they’ll be a MUCH better team when they fleece somebody out of an actually useful piece for his expiring ass.

OK, you can use the "they're better than us" argument

But only so far. VDN and Pargo are clear, GLARING weaknesses, and the only reason the Bulls are .500 (which is lower than preseason expectations) is that Noah and, to a certain extent, Rose are playing well above expectations. Pargo is abysmal at any price (let alone 2 million/year) and Del Negro is very obviously the worst coach in the NBA. Gibson is a nice role player, but he shouldn’t be starting on any team and definitely not over Tyrus — whose stats off the bench are superior. It’s like saying the Lakers’ records means their bench is deep and Derrick Fisher hasn’t fallen off a cliff.

I would take Tyrus Thomas over any player in our frontcourt (not named Ben Wallace). His defense is EXCELLENT (96 D-rating this year, 2nd only to Dwight Howard), and he’s posting a pretty solid PER (16.1). People are way too quick to call him a dumb or a headcase.

i remember watching this guy a couple years ago and thinking he is going to turn into a nice player one day. that has yet to happen though.

i thought about posting a thread about this a few weeks ago when it was first rumored he was on the block. it seemed possible that jod might actually try and get thomas. i still think it might be possible actually. i doubt it (i actually doubt there will be any moves made) but its more likely than amare for bg and wilcox.

He has attitude problems

And apparently he’s as dumb as a brick. Not exactly the best guy to build around. But if you want him for just until his contract expires, sure why not.

He's still acting like a kid.

It’s immaturity, pure and simple.

Noah is doing much better.. Thomas could straighten up too. It takes a measure of introspection and swallowing some humble pie, things that a lot of people doing want to engage in.
