I'm starting to have a beef...
...with SB Nation's set up. Not sure if this is right place to put this (as far as it being a fanpost) but I have been having difficulty almost everyday trying to sign on to here. I don't if anyone else is experiencing the same problem but every time I try to sign on at the top right hand corner of the screen the advertising banner blocks the sign in menu. Today it got me itching because usually if this happens I just have to refresh the page once and then the menu overlaps the banner but today I had to refresh it like four times and then close my browser and reopen it just for the banner to get the hell out the way.
Don't know (I doubt only because it's probably the way the site is set up) if Matt W or Packey can fix this but if you can maybe reposition the advertising banner or something.
I'm using Firefox, so that might be the problem but I find Firefox to be more computer friendly using this site than IE...but maybe not anymore.
Leaving put back or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Haven’t had any of the issues you are talking about. I use chrome and it seems to work fine. Overall I like chrome better than firefox, you might want to consider switching. It’s free.

I have chrome.
But haven’t really messed around with it (mainly because I don’t trust google) but I might start experimenting if it is Firefox messing up DBB experience. :(
exactly, never trust google
the sooner you allow them in your life, the sooner they take over the world.
i really have no idea what banner youre talking about. if you have a mouse with the little scroller wheel, you can always try holding the Ctrl + scrolling the wheel up or down,

You know what?
It worked.
Why didn’t I think of minimizing my browser? Great fix, I appreciate the input.
I’m surprised you don’t know what ad banner I’m talking about…it must displayed differently on different browsers then. But on mine it’s a large ad that’s at the top of the screen right under the SB Nation “toolbar” with the profile, blogs, network message, facebook connect, and finally the login option…o well, it works I’m not complaining. Thanks again.
haven't had these issues, Diablo
but I’ll forward this along to SBN Support and see if they can’t do something about the advertisement. Asking users to switch their browsers to make using this site more convenient is kind of silly (though my experiences with Chrome have been MUCH better than Firefox). In the future, though, just email one of us.

I was a long time firefox user...
and than I made the switch to Chrome. Chrome has alot of the same extensions that firefox uses such as Adblock.
Firefox just all of sudden would go really slow for me, even after an OS reinstall and it even would run slow for me in Linux, so I was basically certain it wasn’t a virus. I switched to chrome and everything is ok again.
Never had the ad problem before though. Maybe you’re just special.

Yeah, all of my 133t FRieNDz used to give me a hard time because I was always using IE instead of Firefox. They were all like, “Psh, you gotta use Firefox, maaaaan! Way better than IE! So much faster and more secure! Blah blah blah…” I tried it and it sucked. It crawled, and didn’t do anything for me. But then I switched to Chrome on a whim and was blown away. Super sleek, fast, minimalist browser that kicks ass.

exactly...
but your friends were rightly. IE sucks.

Using Firefox
I’m using Firefox with no difficulties on this page. I have found that if you mouse-over some flash ads they expand to a ridiculous size and cover content on the page. The trick may be to get your mouse cursor to the login link without dragging it over the ad.
As far as ad-block goes, it sounds like a good idea but if too many people use it, it will break the internet and I’m not even kidding. So many sites are “Free” (like this one) because they can sell advertising. If too many people are blocking the advertising, the sites wont’ be able to make enough revenue, and then they’ll just have to start charging for content or disappear completely. I’m sure someone like MIkePayne who runs his own site could comment on this.
So, support DBB! Don’t use adblocker.

Don't block ads here, guys
That’s just my opinion, of course, but I never block ads at blogs and sites like this that depend on ad revenue for their existence. Ars Technica recently did an experiment that you guys might find helpful.

FWIW, I do use AdBlock on Firefox and Chrome, but I disable it on all the Pistons blogs, etc., that I frequent.
As to the FF vs. Chrome debate, FF’s sheer number as well as quality of extensions has kept me, in spite of Chrome being a bit faster. Plus, I’ve had all sorts of rendering issues with Chrome, even on some of Google’s own pages. Chrome is just a bit too unpolished for me at this point.

I use Mental AdBlock. I don’t even look at them. I couldn’t tell you what any of the ads on any website say (even this one, which I visit 10,000 times a day). I don’t ever notice them, which makes me wonder how effective they really are?

How did you fill your medicine cabinet with Kentucky?

By applying some KY to Kentucky and sliding it in slowly.

my friends installed adblock on my computer...
until that point I didn’t care about ads. Still don’t. But my friends said “the internet is a totally different place without the ads”. My experience hasn’t improved and if anything it might be worse because, well, some of them are kinda entertaining.

from my perspective
and in tune with the link brgulker shared above, AdBlock carries a ~35% tax on my income. Roughly 35% of the visitors to my website use AdBlock, so my site only serves ads to the remaining 65%. I only use ethical ads, no pop-ups, audio ads or others, but AdBlock blocks my ethical ads as well. The result is me earning 65% of the revenues I would earn if people didn’t use AdBlock.
I’m not saying people shouldn’t use AdBlock, but the relationship I have created with my readers is that I provide free content in exchange for limited, unobtrusive, relevant advertisements. My advertisers include HP, ThreadLess, Palm, OBEY, MBandF, AmericanApparel and Toyota, groups that show stuff even I am interested in. That doesn’t mean that shitty teeth whitening or muscle pill ads don’t sneak in from my ad networks now and then, but I work proactively to make sure the advertising is in line with my desired user experience.
As a user, I hate pop-ups, audio ads, etc— and for the most part firefox does a good job of blocking them out-of-the-box. But AdBlock, on the other hand, stops the bad stuff and the good stuff that helps pay the bills of the internet. In my case, the loss I see each month is staggering.

MP, thanks for explaining your own experience in detail. You’re certainly not obligated to.
I actually thought about posting that Ars piece as a FanShot in order to discourage adblocking on DBB, but I wasn’t sure it was totally approrpiate.
In any case, at least now the discussion has been had, and most people understand the consequences.
Yeah.
Ads rarely get me to act on them, but they occasionally work. Mostly for music/concerts/albums.
These blogs and sites are free- the only way they stay so is ad revenue. I have no problem with it. The pop-up and cursor trackers are annoying, but worth dealing with.
