im actually closer to downtown so im game for it.

by Band Aid on Mar 11, 2010 8:26 PM EST reply actions

They really need to go downtown

The Palace is kinda isolated and public transport ain’t that great to use.

insert aussie stereotype here

by Laughton on Mar 11, 2010 8:36 PM EST reply actions

That may change soon

Now that the Big 3 no longer seem to dominate the city and we seem to have a mayor who actually cares, I think public transportation will greatly improve. There really is no reason not to implement an efficient system except for money reasons, but I would argue that good public transportation will more than pay for itself when it comes to getting people jobs (more access=more companies=more money).

I hope you guys get a Sonics team back.

That name is still reserved. When the economy rebounds, I think you will see some activity in that direction.

by Skylar on Mar 12, 2010 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...if the Pistons did move here

I’d start a movement to change the team name to the Seattle Super Pistons.

Oh and the fucked up thing about retaining the Sonics name? While the name is retained, the history is shared. So the championship that the Sonics won years back has a place in the rafters in OKC.

Fucking stupid.

that practice should be banned. Or bannered.

When you buy a franchise,

Franchise history is a part of what you’re buying. When Howard Schultz negotiated the sale of the team to Clay Bennett’s ownership group he got them to agree to a shared history so that if there is another Sonics team in Seattle, they’ll still be able to hang a banner. The Larry O’Brien trophy from that season though stays in OKC.

I didn’t know you were on the West Coast, Boourns. I’d love to visit Seattle someday. Seems like a pretty neat place.

by brgulker on Mar 12, 2010 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I've been out here for going on 4 years

Ive spent the past 5 years away from Detroit though…got to see them play in Denver at the Pepsi Center once, in Seattle twice (including the game during the Sonics final season where a Sonics fan had a crazy picture of Rasheed with a caption saying, "Moving the Sonics to Oklahoma? Roscoe says, “THATS CRAZY!”

But yeah I love Seattle. There are a TON of Michigan transplants, not as cold in the winter and not has hot and humid in the summer and the rainy season pretty much on par with Michigan’s grey sky season (starts in October or so and ends in April usually).

And the best part is I get to work in the videogame industry.

Won't Happen

Bing needs to focus on the City of Detroit rather than the sport franchises.

The Palace is bought and paid for, that means what they make is cash in hand. A new owner wont take on the debt of a new arena. Besides the Palace is still one of the top venues in the country.

by Leapin Lion on Mar 12, 2010 10:08 AM EST reply actions

Whoa...Bing just made a comment about it...

It’s not like he’s furiously sexting his mistress about it or anything. And making a comment like this IS fcousing on the city. The city is predominately black within city limits and the Pistons appeal to this demographic more so than the Red Wings, Lions, or Tigers currently do.

Bringing a recently successful franchise that has 41 games a year into the city limits drives positive economic growth within the city. With Detroit having one of the worst urban sprawl problems in the US, they need to do everything they can to revitalize the city from it’s center and work their way out. Bringing in the Pistons would definitely be a big help to that while also driving additional reasons for city infrastructure upgrades like improved mass transit, added budget for law enforcement, and revenue to small businesses. Not only that, but the Pistons being outside the city limits prevents the city from taxing the organization like they do with every other business based in Detroit. The tax revenue alone would be a big help.

The Palace is a great venue. I have a hard time seeing the Pistons leave it anytime soon.

much agreed

better arena than some of the recently-built ones

and it’s already over 20 years old. Bill kept the value high because they kept renovating and expanding. It’s better than it was when it first opened.

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

by sauce1977 on Mar 13, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Stern will start pushing for a new arena by 2018

At that point the Palace will be 30 years old and the Pistons will have a new owner.

And if Detroit is getting a new arena for the Pistons anytime in the next 10 years, then the NBA will obviously ask for significant tax payer contributions in order to do so. The only way I see an economically depressed city approving a significant contribution to the construction of a new arena is if they can combine it with the Red Wings.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

The Red Wings are the premier modern NHL dynasty. Very good company to keep.

by Skylar on Mar 12, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

not only that

but a lot of people feel more comfortable going to auburn hills because it’s NOT detroit.

by K Krush on Mar 12, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

If the City of Detroit wants to change that

Then they have to start giving people reasons to come back to the city. If they can’t bring in money from outside the city limits, then they can’t increase tax revenue to invest in law enforcement and improve the overall quality of life within city limits.

If you're worried about going to Detroit for a sporting event

you need to grow the fuck up and get out more. It’s not bad, by any means. Especially not when there’s hundreds or thousands of fans walking around the same area as you. That’s such a piss poor attitude to take.

by Skylar on Mar 12, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

stop being so sensitive

and start being more realistic. big cities mean traffic and higher prices on virtually anything you may need to purchase, food, gas, parking etc. not only that but i’m willing to bet that the majority of the pistons audiences aren’t from detroit proper, they’re from elsewhere in the state. moving the stadium in to the city could contribute ridiculously to travel times trying to get in and out of the city.

i know it sucks, but i think you have to be more realistic about people’s opinions of detroit, and admit that more of those concerns are real than you want to admit. it’s not just an issue of safety walking to and from an arena, it’s everything that comes with a big city, and the fact is it’s “Detroit” and that name carries a lot of baggage in people’s minds.

i could imagine one day seeing the pistons move to a growing and revitalized detroit, but i think right now would be a bad time. i think it would hurt the pistons already sagging business more than it would help detroit. last i heard modern stadiums didn’t do much to help local economies. has comerica park brought any money in to the city yet?

by K Krush on Mar 12, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

i'm with skylar

The numbers are skewed for crime, it’s really safe on the east side where everything is, anyway.

If you walk into Highland Park, however, or the west side’s residential, then you got problems on your hands. Ain’t nothing there, though, there’s no reason for you to be that stupid to get lost on that side of town, unless you’re looking for drugs or something else there.

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

by sauce1977 on Mar 13, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not a comfort issue for me. It’s the time it takes to get there vs. the time it takes to get to and get out of downtown Detroit.

by brgulker on Mar 12, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

this is the reality

If the Palace were a dump, then there would be reason to consider a new place. It is not, and Dave Bing is wishing for things he cannot attain.

Unless he had the money to buy the Pistons and the Palace, that is …

Ford Explorers, move over …. we got a new city fund scandal in the works!

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

he's talking to tom wilson about a combined stadium for the pistons and wings

according to 97.1, i dont know where this is coming from though, by all accounts illitch has no interest in acquiring an nba team. if was interested i think he would be a pretty good owner though. he likes to spend on his teams if he thinks they can be a winner.

by dandresden on Mar 12, 2010 12:02 PM EST reply actions

A combo arena would be an easy win-win for both teams

Assuming it could be easily implemented of course. I can envision both teams playing late into the playoffs and trying to juggle game times based on the ridiculous scheduling scenarios that the leagues themselves have given up to the broadcast companies airing the games.

But for the Red Wings to be able to share operational costs with another franchise AND increase their total number of seats available would benefit both organizations.

dont the black hawks and bulls both play at the united center?

it seems like there is precedence. i was thinking about this as well. how long does it take for the rink to freeze?

by dandresden on Mar 12, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure

Vipers/Pistons played at the Palace…I thought that it was possible to keep the ice frozen beneath the basketball floor.

not a fan of combo arenas

Detroit is kind of a magical area to be in when the Wings and Pistons are in town, playing on the same night. Add early-season Tigers, and man, it’s amazing when everything’s jumping. Add a concert @ Ford Field, at the same time. Love love love that time (when the teams are doing well, that is, otherwise, the turnout isn’t so hot).

Plus you can do some more shit after the games or concerts … Royal Oak’s within reach of both Auburn Hills and Downtown.

why would anyone want to buy an NBA franchise

the league’s likely to go belly up in the next ten years, and they never resolved the referee scandal. NBA is toxic, definitely not a good investment.

It doesn't make financial sense... right now.

It would make more sense for the Wings to move to Auburn Hills. Unless Illitch Holdings has plans to buy the Pistons, or they can air lift the Palace downtown, a move downtown looks like it ends up being a lose/lose for the Pistons.

Also there is NO WAY Mrs. D is going to spend an extra dime of investment on the Pistons, period. She will just pay the bills until someone buys.

Being from Windsor I would appreciate getting to take the tunnel bus

Rather than a 45-60min drive. Exit 69 Big Beaver Road has given me many laughs but I won’t miss it. Bye bye exit 81 & 83 okay with me!

The atmosphere downtown would be great. People rip on it too much I love it down there.
