18 Games Left Season Win/Loss Predictions

Back on January 6, I posted that I thought the Pistons would end up 24-58 on the season (actually I said 24-48, but math is hard).  Since that was my original prediction I'm going to stick with it although if I were to change it I'd probably go to 27-55.

Regardless, these last 18 games will play a big part in where we fall in the draft with only 5 games separating the current 8th worst team (New York) from the 3rd worst team (Golden State).  Detroit actually has the worst division record in the league which bodes well for any ties as we've split with Golden State and Sacramento.

Bottom 8 teams (# of games to play against those teams left this season), bold faced teams have harder schedules remaining than Detroit (based on my personal assessment of their remaining schedule):

New York (0)
Detroit
Washington (1)
Sacramento (0)
Indiana (2)
Golden State (0)
Minnesota (1)
New Jersey (1)

We have 10 games left against winning teams vs. Washington's 12 and Golden State's 12 but playing Washington tonight goes in our favor.  If we can lose to them tonight then we'll gain a full game on them and be tied for 6th worst.  With two games against Indiana, we could ultimately leap frog them as well.  Which leaves us Golden State who we've tied the season series with and so I believe it comes down to division record.

Having said all that, what are our predictions on the following:

- Final Win/Loss
- Lottery Placement (NOT draft pick, but where they'll fall in # of ping pong balls for the lottery itself)

So for me, I'm saying 24-58 and 3rd most ping pong balls behidn Minnesota and New Jersey.  Post predictions in comments

schedule for the remaining season is...

@hawks – loss
@ celts – win
cavs – loss
@indy – loss
@cavs – loss
indy – win
@nets – win
bulls – loss

My guess is 28 – 54. Probably bad enough for 4th or 5th worst in the league. I’m pretty sure I was predicting 36 – 46 before the season. Not sure if we woulda won another 8 games if there weren’t any injuries, but this was far worse then I thought, regardless.
heat – loss
suns – loss
@hawks – loss
@ phily – win
hawks – loss
@ heat – loss
@ bobs – loss
raps – loss
minny – win

starting to fall of my prediction. How could i have known that we’d completely give up? So, maybe more like 24-58? ugghh. Although, i’d be way more upset if i was a pacer’s fan and killing our draft position by winning meaningless games right now.

Prediction

We’ll win seven and lose eleven. We’ll have the sixth pick. Joe will draft Dan Gadzuric and upon finding out that Gadzuric is already in the league, he’ll draft Aminu Al-Farouq.

They look ooooooold

And even though it wasn’t a blow out, they never looked in it. Its not only that they are playing bad, is that they are playing back and don’t seem to care.

I give full credit to Roscoe

He infiltrated the enemy’s most secure operation as a double agent and not only caused them to lose more but also lose all sense of pride!

Ingenious if you ask me, give that man a klondike bar.

It's still beyond me

Why Boston was dumb enough to chase after him even though Dyess was still on the table. Dyess offers everything he does minus the horrendous 3 point shooting and actually goes down to the post. I don’t know how they could not take a hard look at him when he’s shown he’s extremely loyal and classy whereas Sheed had a history of infamy.

by bearded thundar on Mar 15, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

and they probably could have gotten him for the minimum instead of the MLE

by don'tworryaboutit on Mar 15, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...Dyess is clearly the better veteran option

I think they got side tracked by Roscoe’s perceived passion and how that combined with KG’s craziness was simply too great to pass up. I also think they were hoping for a stretch 4 since they already have Big Baby to play the short to mid-range jumper/solid defense/solid rebounding.

A part of me though feels like 10 to 15 years from now Roscoe will write a book and in it he will confess that he is true blue and provided less than full effort to the Celtics because of that.

i dont think sheed gives a fuck about the pistons. maybe has some nice memories but his loyalties will be to whoever is willing to “ctc”

Cough up The Cash?

Its partly the romantic in me that puts such crazy ideas in my head as Sheed admitting he hated the Celtics even when he played for them years from now in a tell all book explaining his top notch growing skills coupled with the struggles of being a good father as an NBA star. Can you say New York Times Best Seller? Or rather, NYTBS?

Indeed, there needs to be a biopic where Wayne Brady plays Barkley in this scene. Wood Harris can play Sheed. I’m thinking Dave Chappelle can cameo as Kareem Abdul-Jabar.

by Biz Markie Moon on Mar 17, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Regardless

Of Sheed’s intentions, his crap production coupled with his putrid contract will cripple the C’s for at least this year and the next.

by brgulker on Mar 16, 2010 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

And that

is why I still love Sheed.

The Celtics thought they were getting a stretch 4 to complement Garnett. Instead they got an old guy who doesn’t give a crap anymore.

Update: Pistons 5th worst, 1 game ahead of Washington for 4th worst

Well…the likelihood of us getting to the 3rd worst team in the NBA this season is pretty low. Golden State has matched us over the past 10 going 2-8 preventing us from gaining any traction on them. They still sit 3 1/2 games back from us with 12 games left on the Pistons schedule. Additionally, Washington sits 1 game ahead of us after having surpassed us for 4th worst by posting an epic 0-10 record over the past 10 games. Touche Washington, touche.

These next 3 games will define our season as they will make or break our chances of surpassing Washington and/or catching GSW. With Indy, NJ, and the Bulls, all three are theoretically winnable but a win against any of these teams (especially Indy) could move us from our current 5th worst into a 4 way tie for 6th worst with Indy, Sacramento, and Philadelphia.

And that’s the drama for this week. I’d encourage all of you to cross your fingers, and hope that Dunleavy/Granger, Brook Lopez, and whoever is still playing for the Bulls go off on our Pistons while leaving just enough room for some improvement by the wrong Dajuan, Dayeshaun, and JJ.

by Kriz on Mar 22, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm okay with that...

A loss against NJ could be the missing link in our quest for an 0-10 March. With 4 back to backs scheduled for April. This really is the do or die time of the season.

Stop saying things just before I’m going to say them. It is frustrating and mildly disturbing.

by Birdman84 on Mar 22, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

the schedule sets up nicely for tanking

Miami/Charlotte/Toronto are still jockeying for playoff position and will be focused.
Phoenix and Atlanta are just straight better than us, even if they take us lightly.

the only teams we’re in real danger of beating are Minnesota and Philly. and Philly at least is trying to win. they just beat milwaukee and atlanta.

that bad of a finish could actually put us in the 3rd or 4th spot. Washington might lose out, but Golden State has five or six winnable games.

by the89oracle on Mar 29, 2010 1:15 AM EDT reply actions

I think Illadelph and the Wolves would beat us at this point.

and it brings me great pain to say so.

This may be the most exciting finish to the season since 2002...

excluding seasons that we made the playoffs!

Seriously though…I think we could catch GSW…I don’t see us catching Washington but there are a few forces at play here:

GSW Remaining Schedule
New York
@ Toronto
@ Washington
@ Minnesota
@ LA Clippers
OKC
Utah
@ Portland

Meanwhile, Washington has the remaining games:

@ Houston
@ NOH
Chicago
NJ
Golden State
@ Orlando
@ Boston
vs Atlanta
@ New York
vs Indiana

And Detroit’s Remaining:

Miami
Phoenix
@ Atlanta (2nd night of back to back)
@ Philly
Atlanta
@ Miami
@ Charlotte
vs Toronto
@ Minnesota

So looking at remaining schedules I just don’t see us getting to that 3rd worst spot unless both teams win the games that they have slight potential to win. Best case scenario is that Washington beats GSW, NJ, and Indiana while we lose the remainder of our games. This would put us into 4th worst…unless GSW wins a game they aren’t expected to win, they really only have two other potential games that they could win – Minnesota and LA which would put them tied with us assuming we lose out the rest of our games. We split the season series so I think it goes to division record or conference record. If it’s division record, we win the split sporting the worst division record in the league…yes worse than NJ, but if its conference then GS wins as we’ve won 3 more games against the EC than GS has against the WC.

All in all, these last 9 or so games should be chock full of excitement!

i’m sad that this is what the season has come to, but i agree that this could be an interesting end to the season. i actually had a dream last night where Golden State beat the Jazz, and I woke up thinking “this will help our draft stock.”

Don't forget Nelly

wants to get to the all time wins mark before the end of the season, since, you know, he’s a crappy coach and probably getting fired. So that’s probably going to lead to GS getting a few more wins this season. Jockeying for lotto position!!!!

yeah I wasn't sure how my homerism would evolve this season

but I’m still just as ornery when it comes to shitty officiating and now my efforts are devoted to loss implications on draft lottery standings and over-analysis of potential tie-breakers as opposed to Round 1 match ups or potential ECF opponents.

I think this season has been a sobering reminder of just how lucky we as Pistons fans were from the 2002-2003 season through 2007-2008 season.

UPDATE: Golden State Wins! Washington and GSW now tied for 4th worst

Pistons still 2 games back…Wiz had a close one against the Rockets but not surprisingly dropped an epic 16th loss in a row. This puts them and Minnesota in a tie for longest active losing streak with Detroit standing alone at #2 with 8 losses in a row (LETS HOPE FOR 9 BABY!).

Big games to watch tonight:

Wizards @ Hornets (8 PM) – Hornets Win
Kings @ Timberwolves (8 PM) – Kings Win
GSW @ Utah (10 PM) – UPSET PICK!!!! GSW Wins

I will actually be home in time to watch the Pistons live tonight and with League Pass will be flipping between the Wiz, Kings, and Stones games this evening. Expect updates in the game thread!
