Return of Sheed: Pistons Host Celtics

Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons, Mar 2, 2010 6:30 PM CST

For a while it looked like the Pistons just might post their first winning month since Dec. 2008. Instead, they finished their final trip out west of the season with a three-game losing streak, limping back to the Palace just in time to host the Boston Celtics tonight.

Fortunately, the Celtics are hardly tearing things up recently, as well, losing three of their last four, including Saturday to the lowly Nets, who won for just the sixth time all year.

This one could be closer than each team's respective record suggests, especially if Ben Wallace and Jason Maxiell abuse Rasheed Wallace like they did on Jan. 20, the last time these teams met, which most fans will likely agree still stands as this season's signature win for the Pistons.

Apologies for the abbreviated preview, but the ball is about to tip. Head's up for out-of-market fans -- this one is also being broadcast by NBA TV. Here's to hoping they're using the home team's feed, since tonight also coincides with the Palace's 3rd Annual Pistons Care Telethon.

He's hit 2 shots

I don’t think that qualifies as on fire

Well, he usually does a slow motion pump fake and hesitates instead of just pulling the trigger. Both of his shots have looked good and aggressive.

When Ben sets a pick, players just double team the gaurd. in that situation Ben needs to roll hard to the basket and make himself a threat to score.

was that Joe was REALLY tired of not having a decent backup SF. How many years has it been since Taay had a decent back-up? I’d say 2004, back with Corliss. Joe just figured if he drafted enough SF, one of them had to turn out sooner or later

It’s funny how quickly all the negative things someone says about a player start to be the only thing you see after they play poorly. CV came in with labels of soft, slow, poor defender, inconsistent offense, poor rebounder for his size. And because he hasn’t been playing well for a while, all of those things just keep coming to the forefront. He needs to string together a number of good games and play defense for a change.

by garrettelliott on Mar 2, 2010 7:45 PM CST reply actions

sit your ass down Tony Allen

punkass bitch

only reason you’re still on the Celtics is because no one else in the league thinks your tiredass has any value

Danny Ainge: “So you’re saying you don’t want Tony Allen?”

Every other GM in the league: “You mean the guy who blew out his knee on an unnecessary 360 dunk attempt a couple years ago?”

Danny Ainge: “Yeah, but he’s a young kid. Solid defender!”

Every other GM in the league: “Fuck no, that guy can’t even dribble the basketball. and I don’t want Big Baby either”

Yep, another close loss

Lottery, yay, I guess. . . . Hope Ben W. is OK.

Bruised kneecap?

He’ll be okay.

That would suck for Ben to get a serious injury after the brilliant comeback he’s had this year. I hope he’s okay.

Since it wasn't a blowout

I guess we gotta save Robocop for another night

how was cv tonite?

the bits i heard on the radio made it sound like he was awful tonite

by dandresden on Mar 2, 2010 9:18 PM CST reply actions

A nonfactor

with some lazy fouls because he didn’t box-out Big Baby.

by MFCasey on Mar 2, 2010 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

despite what you hear

it was Ben Gordon’s faul we lost this game.

by Boney on Mar 2, 2010 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

i only got to see the last 4 minutes of the game

but i was tuning in periodically via radio and heard cv get a couple of fouls which sounded like he got since he was playing shit d. also he shot 3 3’s in a couple of minutes during the 2nd. sounded like a crap nite for him.

Detroit had the right idea to start this game

by driving that ball at the Celtics’ defense, but they got threepoint happy once they went tot heir bench. 20 threes for the worst team in the league from there isn’t smart. The Cs outscored them by 18 points there despite taking 2 less shots.

Detroit has a weird team. There seems to be a lot of talent on the roster, but its’ going to be a difficult balancing act developing promising rookie while playing your vets. There’s a lot of duplication on the roster, and even though there’s a group of solid players at the top of the rotation, like Rip, Prince, Charlie, Gordon, Stuckey, there’s no superstar and no real PG. If Chauncey was still there, it would be a different story. He could make this mis-mash roster work.

Detroit has some talented players, but

They are missing some key skills. None of the bigs has a post offense; nobody is shooting 3-pointers well, and the team as a whole shoots FTs badly. That means scoring consists of mid-range jumpers, and one-on-one drives to the basket that are often easily defensed by clogging the middle.

Kriz, wherever you are,

I wanted to give props for your Cheikh Samb tag. I noticed it the other day and I was actually scouring the web that day to find out where in the sega genesis he went.

by JoeDip on Mar 2, 2010 9:48 PM CST reply actions

Well, another almost win, where a bunch of guys almost played as good as we think they should. At the end of the day, it’s just one more loss closer to an impact player in the lottery who can help us turn the franchise around … I can’t believe it’s come to that.

Oh, and if Ben Wallace’s knee is anything more than just normal soreness, this season is going to get even harder to watch than it already is.

by brgulker on Mar 2, 2010 9:54 PM CST reply actions

i was thinking that too

how many times have we talked about how ben wallace is the only one playing d and what it would look like if he wasnt on the team. well, we are about to find out possibly.

Nate Robinson shooting deadly

Daye playing well early in the game, same great effort from Wallace.. Jerebko contesting the Celts on Defense and offense.

Rondo putting the dagger in late in the game w/free throws. DET & BOS traded leads man times.

There’s more but I’m tired.

Exciting.

I’m not even joking.

It is scary if it means the return of Wontcox though.

Who's a better value?

Nate Robinson at $4 million per?

Ben Gordon at $11+ million per?

I know you pretty much despise Ben Gordon in a Pistons uniform, Gulk

but I think most DBBers would’ve rioted if Joe Fubars somehow got Ultranate in Detroit.

Yeah, I don’t like Gordon, and TBH, I may never like Gordon. But I didn’t mean this comment as a gripe. Just a question about value for the dollar.

by brgulker on Mar 3, 2010 12:30 PM CST up reply actions

Right now Gordon is playing like garbage, so Nate is more bang for your buck.. When Gordon plays like he’s actually capable, we’ll all sing Kumbaya and be happy again.

Who is this "Bernstein" you speak of?

I’ve never heard of him. Perhaps he should be in a commercial or something…

Perhaps even fashion an entire studio

in which a man could sit and discuss the current maladies with which our fair Pistons team have been afflicted.
