Should the Pistons just lose or try to win?

I've been a Pistons fan for the last few years.

But as a fan, I can no longer defend the team for their unPistons-like season. It's getting hard to root for them from halfway around the globe in Korea.

The Pistons suck this year.

Nothing has gone right except for maybe the discovery of Jerebko and the return of Big Ben.

So....

Should the Pistons just forget about winning and play the rookies and future prospects, benching Tay and Rip and everyone else that's not a part of the Pistons' future. Or should we just keep playing our best players?

I don’t think we should give up, no. I do, however, think that if a game is close, we should miss a few key shots. At this point, it’s better to lose and get the higher lottery pick than win and get… nothing.

One of the many flaws of the current NBA.

I’ve said this before, but I think they should cut Tay and Rip’s minutes by a bit, and give the young guns some burn. Basically give minutes to everyone who hasn’t had a chance to play yet. Maybe good things will happen and we’ll see some nice chemistry from random combinations. Maybe we’ll even win a game or two. But if we don’t, we’re that much closer to a potentially high draft pick and the rooks have gained solid experience on the floor. Free Summers!

by garrettelliott on Mar 7, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Definitely, the team should start to cut the vets minutes to make room for the guys that barely see the floor.

They should not try to lose games, but they will anyway.

Why would you want a team....

….to not win?….Who cares about draft position…..Teams should never not try to win games…I cant believe you even posted this man.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 8, 2010 8:52 AM EST reply actions

Not exactly what i was saying...

Since the Pistons are gonna lose regardless of whether they try their best by giving the vets a lot of play time or playing the rooks and guys with potential, i was just asking whether we should just forget about winning for this season. It would be better for Detroit in the long run if the young players get more playing time and get a higher draft pick.
But I do agree that it would be pretty damn unsportsmanlike and unproffessional if we didn’t try to win without trying.

I think you play the best players.....

…..if Prince and Rip are the ebst players to start they should start…..the staff and management know what they have have in Jerebko and Daye and Summers….I dont think you play those guys just to play them…They have to earn there time.

Even if we try to win, we’ll lose more than we’ll win.

Let's just tank.

The “no honor in tanking” argument is moot, silly, and outdated. The Cavs, Celtics, Magic, and Spurs are among the elite because AND ONLY because they sucked such a dick for a season that they got a fabulous draft pick which turned into a franchise guy. If we get a shit draft pick and continue to be a middling team for years (like the Pacers/Wizards/Knicks/Bobcats), I blame all the “don’t tank, it’s not right!” fans and their short-sighted and misguided views on the subject. We are NEVER going to get a stud here through free-agency. The draft is the only way we’re going to get back to prominence.

clarification:

In Boston’s case, they turned the fabulous high draft pick(s) into superstars that won them a championship. Regardless, the point still remains:

TANK = AWESOME AND COOL

WIN POINTLESS GAMES = REALLY FUCKING DUMB

I, too, will blame the fans (and not Dumars) if we suck the proverbial dick for years to come.

yeah who gives a shit if we end up 30-52.

i would rather we just lose the rest of the games and get into the lottery. a win over the wizards or whoever is meaningless at this point.

Unreal....

…..those of You guys want the team to tank games never played HS sports let alont College or professional sports…..Makes me sick to my stomach

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 8, 2010 4:03 PM EST reply actions

I played HS basketball. I also enjoy eating Little Caesar's pizza.

Both those statements are irrelevant to the future of the Detroit Pistons. Our best chance at being good again, and soon, is to TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK.

by The Joel on Mar 8, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Even If we play .500....

….ball the rest of the way we stil get a lottery pick and a great player so why tank?….So we can pick number 5 instead of number 8?…..We stil get a good player when picking in top 10.

The 2010 draft, numbers 1 through 5.

by Skylar on Mar 8, 2010 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

the players that go 1 through 5 will most likely be better than the players that go 6-10

for example, i believe couzins will go in the first 5. i would like him so therefore it would be nice if we had a pick that fell within the first 5. i dont think its that much of a leap to conclude that the first five picks will most likely be the best players.

by dandresden on Mar 8, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

that isnt to say that 6-10 wont be good players

but whats the point of winning say 30 games and getting the tenth pick when we could win 24 and get a top five? no ones going to be rejoicing that we won 30 games. that shits for clippers fans.

by dandresden on Mar 8, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Well I like watching.....

….the pistons win so im not for them tanking games just to pick one or 2 sports higher.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 8, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

i like watching them as well

but whether they win or lose isnt really the point anymore. i still enjoy it either way. if the games had any meaning i would feel differently. right now its pointless to be riding rip, tay and ben. play the young guys. just look at how max is doing now that he is getting consistent pt. makes a world of difference for a young guys confidence and development. i dont want them to throw the games or anything and i dont get mad when they win but it makes more sense to me to just let the young guys play.

by dandresden on Mar 8, 2010 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

I agree play the young guys.....

……if they earn the time in practice…..Once you start handing guys things that never works out….Gota earn it.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 8, 2010 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Hey played ball in HS and college, actually.

I don’t think we should try to tank the season. I don’t like the idea now (and probably ever). But I also think that it doesn’t matter who we play — we will lose more than we will win. So we don’t have to try to tank to lose games.

Hopefully, that doesn’t make you want to vomit.

by brgulker on Mar 8, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

point of view

on what tanking is. We have “nothing” to play for in this season. Sure, respect and moral victories can still be won, but there’s no playoffs this season. Is it tanking if we shut down rip and tay and let daye/jj/summers start some games and get some experience? What’s better for the organization? Winning 6 more games running rip/tay 40+ a night, or winning 4 more games and giving the rooks a chance at a starters role? I don’t expect us to roll over on teams, but I think it’s hard headed to continue playing the vets heavy minutes at this point in the season. Let me see daye get the start at the 2. Let’s see if Summer’s nba ready body can actually play in the nba. Can JJ keep his per/48 minute stats if he actually plays 40 minutes? From my stand point, it’s not tanking, it’s accepting that we’re not very good with our current starting line up rotation and seeing if the alternatives are any better.

by C$ on Mar 8, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions

Agree 100%.

If we’re playing the rookies and we’re winning by 5 with 2 minutes left to play, I don’t want to purposefully turn the ball over or take bad shots or foul. I just want them to play basketball, but I want the young guys to be on the court. I suspect we’ll lose more often than we win, but I’m okay with that.

by garrettelliott on Mar 8, 2010 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

That’s what I want, too. Obviously the playoffs are out of the picture, but we can use what’s left of the season to evaluate players in game situations and get the young guys more experience. There’s little to be gained from playing Rip, Tay, and Big Ben over 30 minutes a game.

by Birdman84 on Mar 8, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

I agree....

….but if we want to trade guys like Rip and Tay we have to play them……Other teams have to see them play…..I agree play the rooks but I mean you cant just play a guy to play a guy…..if he doesnt practice well or show up at practice physically and mentally then that player shouldnt play eitehr….Its a fine line for sure.

by BennieBladesFan on Mar 8, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Tank? HELL NO. Play the rookies? HELL YES.

It is important to show the players currently on the roster, and also on any other rosters or in college, that the organization values winning. Especially now with the uncertainty surrounding the ownership situation.

Now, there are different ways to show other people you are serious about winning. One way would be to put Rip and Tay on the floor for 40 minutes a game because they are your best players. I would not subscribe to that particular course of action, because “winning” is more than just winning NOW.

Daye and Summer (and even Jerebko) must, must, MUST see more playing time. They have to. Otherwise, Jod is likely to make yet another ill-informed decision about who to keep on the roster next year and who to dump. He needs to see them play against NBA competition.

In short, the team needs to continue to try and play good basketball, WINNING basketball. They just don’t necessarily need to win games to do it. This is why I HATE the term “tank”. It implies the team should purposefully set a course for failure (and don’t fool yourself; losing games on purpose is failing, regardless of what happens in the draft).

Tanking and throwing games

Are very very different things. Tanking means going into the game with a reduced chance of winning, like playing the rookies and resting the vets more. I am okay with this. I want the team to win, but I don’t want to see a perennial mediocre team that wins just enough to stay that way. We had the opportunity with free agency and Joe blew it. The draft is the next available opportunity, failing that we jettison the bad contracts for nothing and suck a few years longer.

Throwing a game when we are up or close to winning should never ever happen. The Pistons should never do this and it would make me upset if they did.
