I think winning builds character.
Just ask Ben Wallace.

Jonas Jerebko once killed a charging female rhinoceros in heat protecting its young with nothing more than a hook shot.
Dude I'm excited for the new Lions
Mayhew is making some good moves, and I expect a great draft. I been watching those fools for years but I’m optimistic as shit right now.

mostly good moves
still very hesitant, pettigrew is almost as big of a failure as any, and i don’t care for matthew man’s man.
calvin johnson is still a boss.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Stafford showed heart
which is more than I can say for his predecessors.
I was against drafting him, but no way can I do anything but root for that dude after the Cleveland game. Go Stafford. Go Lions.
Pettigrew is a let down, but Delmas is just a certifiable badass out there. I can’t wait to see what Megatron does with Nate Burleson across from him.

that's a nice upgrade, burleson
i dunno why they went with bryant johnson, he was a dog’s bitch in arizona it was clear that his time there wasn’t indicative of anything other than he sucked, burleson isn’t more than an average receiver but he’s a step up from bryant.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Assuming he comes back from his knee injury alright, Pettigrew will be a fine TE. He was just becoming Stafford’s favorite target before he blew out his knee.

i disagree on that
he’s a poor route runner, low intelligence, hands of stone. the potential that got him that 1st round was his blocking and size, but even for a guy they rated so highly on physical numbers, pettigrew’s kinda slow. he’s more of a blocking TE than a receiver, which is fine if the lions are going to commit to a balanced offense. what doesn’t make any sense was that for a team that didn’t win a game in 2008, they needed best-available talent. guys like percy harvin and michael oher were available, and to me those guys were better talents and they actually fit detroit’s needs better. pettigrew was a luxury for some contender, in other words, and his blocking wasn’t all that special, although his run blocking in particular was one aspect he excelled at.
maybe if he evens out the inconsistency he displayed, i mean he had a decent game vs cleveland but he had a horrible game vs green bay, his drops come in bunches, once he dropped one it seemed like he’d shut himself down out there.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
which is more than I can say for his predecessors.
Jon Kitna showed a lot of heart too…not saying much there.

I’m always optimistic at the beginning of EVERY season: the season they finally got a “serious” winning team going (6-2) and then finished 7-9. That off-season I was like “well, they started off good last season, they didn’t lose anybody and now CJ is in his second season” and then we went 0-16. I try to take every off-season with a grain of salt because there is no way I’m going to be let down like that again. But I agree, from the outside looking in, they have made some very decent moves.
he’s a poor route runner, low intelligence, hands of stone.
I remember the day we drafted him, I made a comment like this on a Lions’ blog and basically called him Sloan V. 2.0. Not too many people liked that…but from what I’ve seen of him, I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as I made him out to be. The jury is still out on him but I do see some potential in his game.
with pettigrew i'm making no excuses
1st round guys ….. i want to see them make a difference immediately. at least stafford made some small difference out there … he was under way more pressure, too. te is a luxury position, and pettigrew couldn’t even handle it. he’s already a bust by the sheer amount we’re not getting out of him because of his draft position.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
I completely agree about his draft position.
I really thought we were going to go defensive (and if we had to go offense, we would pick up a lineman) with the Dallas pick. I still feel like it was a bad pick and to be honest, I am still not sold on Stafford either.
People talk about him being a positive leader, etc. but until he shows he can perform consistently then…well, you know, I thought Joey Harrington was a postive leader in his rookie & sophmore years also.
they ruined harrington
i will never forgive mariucci for insisting he play like jeff garcia, but when he got passed over in ATL and couldn’t keep the jerb there, then got passed over for the corpse of Mark Brunell .. (HE COULD HAVE HAD A GODDAMN SB RING) i mean the guy outperformed I think that was Brunell in the pre-season and they dumped him anyway in NO … it’s too late. he won’t even be a vinny testaverde now.
joey was a positive leader. i’m pretty much convinced that his teammates thought he was a goody two shoes. they sided with that shithead dre bly, i mean who does that, dre was responsible for derailing charles rogers’s career with the 1st collarbone injury, dre was mostly bad news while he was here.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Dre Bly…yes, then a long came Tatum Bell…
And it’s funny you mention Rogers, Yahoo! Sports just wrote an article about him.
But anyways, I do agree with most of what you said but I also think (I referenced it a couple comments below) our offensive line destroyed Joey. Given a proper O-Line he might of had a different career turn out and sadly, these are the same bums defending Staffod….repeated history?
he coulda at least been a jake plummer
he was robbed of his snakes and his averageitude
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
The Lions have been adept at only one thing for decades
and that’s hooking fans in every year at the start of a new season.
Today though, there is no more Millen, instead the GM we have now and the Coach we have seem to work pretty well as a team. I think this was lacking for a long time. William Clay Ford seemed content to let them be the biggest joke in the league every year- but in this uncapped off-season, he’s letting Mayhew and Schwartz go after sound uses of his funds. That’s why I’m optimistic.

My main concern as a Lions fan (for the last decade and in general the last 20 years):
- Jeff Backus
- Dominic Raiola
- Gosder Cherilus
- Kirk Barton
- Dan Gerberry
- Corey Hilliard
- Jon Jansen
- Daniel Loper
- Stephen Peterman
- Kurt Quarterman
- Manny Ramirez
- Roy Schuening
- Rob Sims
When are these bums going to be tossed and we actually start recruiting for a “real” offensive line?
i hate jeff backus
but rob sims was the lone positive on seattle’s line last year. you gotta be a sad panda of sorts in seattle right now – your coach was a nfl reject the last time he didn’t have a usc job, and now he wants a zone blocking system (read, undersized guys who basically they don’t have on the roster), and that’s how we got sims … he didn’t ‘fit’ their system, despite being the best blocker from last season.
i’m not saying sims is a badass or a future hofer, but he’s better than we usually get.
and u forgot damien woody, who ironically had a resurrection of his career after he left detroit – he was one of the best blockers in the league last year. i guess some people really don’t like playing in detroit. fuck you damien you fat fuck!
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Damien Woody showed some flashes while he was here but he never made any impact like he did after he left.
I also can’t stand Jeff Backus, he is such a waste and he’s been our starting tackle for years now. And this asshole has 3 more seasons left of his contract.
I don’t know much about Rob Sims but I hope he’s at least decent enough to crack a starting spot. I’m just tired of picking up all these bums and wish the Lions would make some sort of effort in getting O-linemen out of the draft.
backus actually had a semi-decent year last year
but i do not forgive him for being the human false start machine
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Man the Lions would be way better
if they could just reduce stupid F’n penalties like those.

cherilus is a lost cause
he better learn him some St. Jude because dude is not long for the NFL on his current path
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Harrington always sucked. Lions should have never drafted him.
Backus is playing out of position but if the Lions somehow get an OL (Okung!?) they can move back to where he’s more suited (guard or right tackle). Imagine if they could somehow pull off this Haynesworth deal without paying him that absurd bonus… they’d be able to draft a guy like Okung, thus improving significantly both on the DL and OL.
Hard to judge Pettigrew when he got hurt right as he was starting to thrive. He only played 9 games and he had 30+ receptions and 300+ yards. I’ll take that for a rookie TE who plays on the LIONS with a rookie QB I hope he bounces back from his knee injury to prove people wrong. And by selecting him, the Lions kind of made it clear they wanted Stafford to start and to have as many weapons possible (despite his shitty o-line).

guy was a spread qb who got forcefed shitty-ass west crap offense, it’s no surprise he always sucked here.
i’ll never forget the game i saw years ago, harrington was hittin’ charles rogers, rogers looked great, i’m almost positive i was at this game:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200309070det.htm
not long after that dre bly and rogers collided in practice, rest was history.
if they wanted more weapons for stafford they shoulda went with a receiving TE in the vernon davis or jeremy shockey mold, 2009 didn’t happen to be a great year for TEs, they shouldn’t have reached for brandon.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
I think that was C.Rog’s last game of the season and I heard the incident between him and Bly was more of a “body slam” than collision.
was his 1st of 5 in '03
in ‘04 he was IR’d on the opening plays of game 1, the 2nd collarbone break.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.
Pettigrew has had a good long off-season to heal
The 2010 Lions are looking much different even before the draft, better team around the guy, chance to rest up- I look for better play from Pettigrew this season.

Don’t give Backus any excuses. He’s been playing the LT for at least 3 seasons now (more than likely a lot longer) and he still does not have that side of the line down? I wish the Lions would just cut their losses and waive him.
It's weird
I’ve loathed Backus for years (Raiola moreso though) but Schwartz has been megasuperhigh on JB since last season, I don’t know what to make of it.
