Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Lebron James: Greatest Buh-Gina Ever...

...to never win a championship?

So let's think through this whole thing, what could happen if Cleveland fizzles out in the Semi-finals.  If they fail on Thursday or Sunday, just what happens to LeBron and his chances for earning a championship in this lifetime?

If Cleveland fails, it's as good as gold that he'll leave the Cavaliers.  While his next destination has been examined by the media for, well, pretty much his entire career, what team can offer him a better chance at a championship?

New York has been the most common team mentioned for Lebron's free agency.  Should they sign LeBron, however, they'll need to bring in one more free agent-- and then they'll have nothing (including this year's first rounder which is in Utah's hands) to build around him.  I, for one, would love to see the man in New York, only because his chances of a championship there are even worse than they would be in Cleveland.

So how about New Jersey?  Is a trio of James, Wall and Lopez enough to make it happen, cap'n?  Only if Wall turns out to be as good as the hype surrounding him, and that they find players to stand up at the 2 and 4.  That might take a few years to work out.

It's doubtful Miami would go after James, as the proper pairing to Wade would be at the 4.  Boozer, Stoudemire or Bosh are a better fit with Wade mechanically, as Lebron and Dwyane might be a bit too crowded for comfort.  Should Lebron sign in Miami, alongside Wade, they still have no point guard or frontcourt players worth mentioning.  Even with Lebron and Wade, that'd be a team a few pieces away from true contention.

Then there's Chicago.  If LeBron is changing his number from 23 to... something else, it could foretell a landing in Chicago.  While Chicago still needs a 2 and a 4, they'd have Luol Deng to trade to fill either position, since they won't need Deng at the 3.  Add a vet minimum contract to a player like Ray Allen (who may not bite on a minimum contract), and he might have a shot at a ring.

The Clippers are another actually reasonable destination.  A lineup of Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Lebron James, Blake Griffin and that cave man that likes fireworks could be practically unstoppable.  Then again, the Clips are cursed, so keep an eye on Lebron's knees, ankles and elbow if he signs.

In short, if Lebron leaves Cleveland, I'd love to see him sign in New York first, then New Jersey or Miami second.  If he signs in Chicago or LAC, it might take voodoo to keep him out of the finals.  I have no problem stooping to voodoo.

So, whattya think?  Could the Celtics be deciding Lebron's fate, and if so-- do you think he'll win a championship with any other team?

Let’s wait until after Game 6 to celebrate—but I’ll be happy as long as James doesn’t go to Chicago. Keep the Central Division LeBron-free!

NY Knicks or BKLYN Nets

Most likely Nets.

Cavs will lose this series- and Cleveland will lose Lebron.

Anywhere in the Atlantic Division is fine with me.

…though I would prefer for James to sign with Olympiacos, or perhaps CSKA Moscow.

I hope every day that some crazy euro mogul

offers him an 8 year bajillion dollar deal to score 120 ppg on some eurotrash team.

I'm still in the camp that Lebron stays if they lose a championship

He’s made it very clear that bringing a championship to Cleveland is his #1 priority for his career right now so if he loses then does he just decide to give up on that goal of his?

I think most likely scenario is that Cleveland fires Mike Brown, re-signs Lebron, and uses whatever salary is left over to go after a sign & trade for Bosh (involving some package of Jamison, salary, and draft picks) and hope that that can get things done. They re-sign Ilgauskas for the vet minimum and start Varejao as their floppy haired defensive minded center with Bosh playing PF.

Shaq plays into this more than you

Matt Derry of 97.1 used to work for a major cleveland radio station before coming here, and still has connection down in the Cav’s locker room. Apparently Shaq is pissed at Mike Brown for not playing him in the 4th quarter of game 4, and basically told LeBron to pull a Kobe (in game 7 against the Suns, he did not take a single shot in the second half, causing them to get blown out despite I believe a 3-1 series lead)

*Shaq plays into this more than you know

did not mean that Shaq is more important than the Boourns, I’m definitely prefer your posts over Shaq’s stupid tweets

Shaq gave an order to Lebron?

Lebron takes orders?

Everything about the above scenario is what I described earlier, except for that part. I find it tough to believe King Hubris would let anybody tell him what to do. But I guess it’s possible.

I also find it hard to believe he’d throw his integrity in the garbage by doing something like that. Especially with his stupid quest to become a Global Icon or whatever.

by garrettelliott on May 13, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

he did say that he spoils his fans with his play after the game, so I really wouldn’t put it past him. He’s always been extremely pigheaded, it’s just now that the rest of the nation realizes it

i find all these scenarios unlikely. i think it was just a choke job.

Alternative scenario...

…James takes a two-year sabbatical to play Double-A ball in the Indians organization.

Another possibility...

im hesitant to say cleveland will lose this series, though i hope they do. i still dont think lebron bolts from cleveland though as this series progresses im starting to think its more likely. i think if he goes its to the knicks.

by dandresden on May 12, 2010 1:27 AM EDT reply actions

you really think it's as good as gold that he'll leave if they lose?

My opinion has swayed back and forth. The Knicks or Nets aren’t any closer to a ‘ship than the Cavs. And if Cleveland fails, an enormous amount of that will fall squarely on LeBron’s shoulders for how he played in Game 5. I mean, I’ve never seen anything like that from a superstar in a swing game. Not only did he just have a bad game, but he made zero effort of making an impact — he was constantly standing around and seemed completely disinterested. That might mean he’s already mentally checked his bags for NYC, but it might also present the personal challenge to stay and make it up to his home state and Cleveland ‘faithful’ for choking big time. I hope he leaves, though, of course.

As for the championship talk – he is still only 25, unfortunately… Jordan didn’t win his first championship until he was 27. I don’t want to get into a “Will he never win a championship?” conversation quite yet because, well, weren’t people doing the same thing for Jordan? And then he went and damn near ruined my entire childhood. I don’t want to live through another decade like that.

there's a possibility

of a sign and trade, especially if Cleveland baws to the league office about getting nothing for him. then he could go to the Lakers or other teams that are over the cap, who have stars in place but need another superstar to make it work.

And the ages are noted, but if LeBron’s Cavs bow out this year ringless, that’s 7 seasons he’s been in the league with no championship. While LeBron did reach the Finals faster than Jordan did, he would need to win it all with the Cavs this season to match the professional seasonal track that Jordan achieved.

Also, it’s not like superstars don’t switch teams in this league. Wilt Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal (I’m noticing a Center for the Lakers trend here), Bob Lanier …. there’s a lot of big guys changing scenery here … technically, LeBron is a big man (albeit not playing a big man’s position, but still).

I would be really pissed if he ends up in Chicago. Anywhere but the Central. Let some other division be brutalized (GO TO THE ATLANTIC, LEBRON, GET YOUR ENDORSEMENT BONUS MONEY FOR BEING IN NYC ALREADY).

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

The difference between all the guys you named and Lebron:

Lebron is compared to and measures himself against two players: Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. One could argue that assuming Lebron eventually acheives winning a few ships like both of these players that the three of them are in a completely different discussion from the other players you mentioned above.

Neither one of these players ever played on more than one team (outside of Jordan playing on the Wizards briefly). Both of these players got it done repeatedly on only one team. I kind of feel like changing teams/loyalties/development for Lebron could ultimately discredit him in the argument among these three.

its weird but when a guy switches teams it kinda disrupts the continuity of his career or something. makes him less of a special player in the eyes of some.

by dandresden on May 13, 2010 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

uh, yeah I think he'll leave. Lose or not.

He wears a yankees cap everywhere… even Indians playoff games. His favorite NFL team is not the Browns, it’s the Dallas Cowboys. He’s like a little kid. He is bolting for New York, Nets or Knicks. He’s doing it.

I hope he goes out West

So I don’t have to watch him in the early game of every fracking TNT double header for the rest of my young adult life.

true that, i know that he gets ratings but it would have been nice to see something else every now and then.

also, it seems that there are way too many golden state games nationally televised as well, like one a week. who the fuck wants to watch that shit?

I still maintain NJ is best option

At worst, they get Derrick Favors at 4. At best they could either get Wall or Turner (Lopez has center covered), and in all honestly they could probably just call Bron’s agent and ask who he likes more (likely Wall, he went to see a few Kentucky games).

Even with a max deal, NJ will still have cap space to get a decent bench, just think of this as a nucleus to build around:

Wall
CDR
LeBron
any competent PF (can be traded for via Harris)
Lopez

or

Harris
Turner
LeBron
any competent PF
Lopez

or

Harris
CDR
LeBron
Favors
Lopez

Also, if LeBron goes to New York, he can get free lap dances 4 life.

But would that also apply if he goes to the Nets, and they move to Brooklyn?

lebron could teach those strippers a few dance moves.

You know, I was thinking about it...

Once LeBron retires from basketball and puts on a little weight like Jordan did, he’s going to be up over 300 pounds. Maybe I’m crazy, but I think he’ll really come to resemble Elena Kagan and I’m really looking forward to it:

don't forget

the worst case scenario, where wade/bosh/lbj team up and destroy the nba for the rest of eternity. Will never happen due to huge ego’s, but considering that they played together on the olympic team and seem to get along, it could happen. Nyets have cap space, a crazy russion ka-billionaire, and a pg and center already, that could make brooklyn the place to be.

by C$ on May 12, 2010 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

That's a slim chance though

I think because Lebron wants to be THE GLOBAL ICON, how is it going to effect him if everybody brings up he only won a trophy because of Wade and Bosh?

I think Wade and Lebron are alpha dogs, and there would be some dead bodies if they had to duke it out to be the guy on a team. Somebody would demand a trade.

Also, I think Lebron would be infinitely cooler if he turned into a Magic Johnson/Bill Laimbeer hybrid and just turned into the supervillain of the league. Because who’s gonna take Kobe’s place when he retires? One of my big problems with Lebron is that he’s too damn nice to be as much of a douche as he is.

I’ve been thinking about this all day, and reading all of the blogs wondering where the real LeBron went. Anyone think he’s going to come out and score 50 next game? He’ll probably score 25 on free throws alone.

by garrettelliott on May 12, 2010 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

he's in a no-lose situation

if he struggles, blame it on injury, he did his best, if he dominates, he’s the hero.

a crippling leg injury would be too much to ask. :C

i will pray

for a successive c’s upset and subsequent choking in the next round, which is a more tangible prayer to the basketball gods.

if lebron shredded his knee, that might be too much win, i mean the gods might move the pistons to nova scotia or some shit to balance the force.
